I subscribed because the guy on the video seems to be a really nice person. And of course because this tutorial is very helpful!
If I imagined my teddy bear come to life, it would be that man.
Any concerns with over spray or run off on to the car paint?
I’d be concerned about prematurely dry rotting the rubber weather stripping around the windshield
Awesome sauce! I saw one were they used vinegar and it was a fail.....so me make hubby a bottle for his car with rubbing alcohol....thank you so so much....me a newbie here....look forward at checking out your other videos... toodles Debs from Texas
Debbie Cogsdil did it work?
Yes...it did work last winter, plus you can keep a bottle in your car and it won't freeze. WooHoo. toodles debs
The only reason for the water is to make the solution last longer. Alcohol lowers the melt temperature of the ice... using straight alcohol would work as well.
I'd just go for the gusto and buy 91% Iso. Its not extremely caustic so why not?
Hes like THE Dad ya know. Very nice
Maybe you should include the ratios of each ingredient?
+Annony Mouse We did in the recipe on our site. www.livingonadime.com/2-ingredient-homemade-windshield-de-icer-recipes/
+Living On A Dime but you didnt, just said 2 parts rubbing alcohol n 1 part water. what your one part ,a cup or two per part. And what about driving and freezing after you've done the spraying.
+Xzavis Jackson www.livingonadime.com/2-ingredient-homemade-windshield-de-icer-recipes/
+Xzavis Jackson - a 2 to 1 ratio is simple. You determine how much you want to make whether a cup or a quart. Put in twice as much alcohol as you do water.
You for real?
I will give it shot today
So you used 50/50 proportion?
I enjoy this video and would like to see more of these type videos in the future.
Hi, i would be careful with stuff that can dry-out your wiperblades. You can also use anti-freeze windshield wiper fluid, put it in a spray bottle. It's much cheaper than regular de-icer spray. Regards
Is it equal parts water:ethyl alcohol? I missed the bit that said that.
Thanks for the video. I have a question. Will this spray not freeze if left in the car overnight at temperatures below -20 degrees?
Freezing point of rubbing alcohol is around -70F. Mixed with some water, it shouldn't at -20F.
Okay my question is does this cause any cracks or anything over time? I heard if you use vinegar and water it causes the windows to crack...
+David Franz I have never heard of that happening or experienced myself. I would think it has more to do with if there is a pit to begin with it cracks when you put a hot heater on the cold windshield.
If you use it as a spray your risk is minimal... if you use a bucket then yes the shock of water (warmer than ice) on an ice cold window goes Way Up.
The old think you need to pay attention to is trying to keep it off your wipers.. some brands don't like alcohol. Same if you use Rain Away or similar..
how much water and rubbing alcohol to put in the bottle together evenly?
Jovan Johnson 1/3 water 2/3 alcohol
What is the ratio
Wow
I also used this on my car door when it froze shut.
How much water and alcohol do you use?
+Jeff Ramos I usually use half and half but 2 parts alcohol to 1 part water is best.
Anyone got this to work with lots of ice? I tried this before and worked great when there was a little frost like in the video but it did not work when there was a significant amount of ice.
+Tony Thomas For a lot of ice you need to put it on the night before, which I know isn't always possible but if you can then it will keep it from getting frozen solid.
Does it work on car doors so they are prevented from becoming frozen shut?
Yes, I work at a state park and had to stay several nights because we could not get off the park and my SUV doors were frozen shut after 4 days of ice and snow. I sprayed it around the edge of the drivers side door and it worked after I kept doing it for a bit.
Vaseline on a rag , wipe it over the rubber molding around the door works great
I spray a little WD 40 on a rag and wipe the rubber seal along the car doors and a little of the metal along the doors as well so that way the doors don't stick to rather metal making your car hard to open or even a little 10W 40 motor oil on a rag and wipe down the door seals and the metal around the doors since oil doesn't freeze neither will your car doors. people will wonder how the hell you get in and out of your car so easily. Smart
1) . do i need to spray at night so it will not frozen at night and next day in the morning i don't have to scrub alot ice .
2 ) .1 cup water and 1 cup any alcohol they have i think 75 or 90 or 95 alcohol or which alcohol is good ?
3). can i make big bottle spray for use 2 or 3 week and when no more i make again bottle spray ? how long it last for water in bottle ?
4) if i spray and use it for long is it will have crack on my windshield ? yes or no ?
5) in the morning i spray how long ice will melt and will be wipe off from windshield ?
i know i have alot a question . please help me , explain for me . answer for me understand how use it , i work in the morning ice frozen from car is very important for me. hope you help me . Thank you so much .
I'm appreciated. Thanks you .
+ZE KENZY 1) . do i need to spray at night so it will not frozen at night and next day in the morning i don't have to scrub alot ice .
You can do both. If you spray it on at night the ice doesn't form as much. If you spray it on in the morning it will need to sit a few minutes 5-10 to let the ice get soft before you can scrape it off.
2 ) .1 cup water and 1 cup any alcohol they have i think 75 or 90 or 95 alcohol or which alcohol is good ?
Any kind is fine.
3). can i make big bottle spray for use 2 or 3 week and when no more i make again bottle spray ? how long it last for water in bottle ?
I just find a spray bottle and fill it 1/2-2/3 full of alcohol and then fill the rest the of the bottle with water. Then I just use it for several weeks until it goes and fill it up again.
4) if i spray and use it for long is it will have crack on my windshield ? yes or no ?
I have never heard of it cracking or had it happen on my windshield. I'm not sure why it would because it just slowly melts the ice and doesn't get hot fast. If you look at the ingredients of commercial de-icers they are just alcohol so I think if the windshield cracks there was a problem before and it wouldn't be from the de-icer.
5) in the morning i spray how long ice will melt and will be wipe off from windshield ?
5-10 minutes it needs to sit on the ice to soften it. You may need to put a second coat on if it doesn't get it all the first time and the ice is thick such as after an ice storm.
i know i have alot a question . please help me , explain for me . answer for me understand how use it , i work in the morning ice frozen from car is very important for me. hope you help me . Thank you so much .
I'm appreciated. Thanks you .
You're welcome.
It works. Many things work.
But as soon as you start moving whole thing just freezes on windshield and you dont see anything.
Unless you let you car to idle 15 minutes or so and let the windshield to warm up with car heater.
Its my personal experience.
It freezes even with -5 degrees celsius.
Even if you put cover for night and you have nice clean windshield. It will freeze when driving.
Any cure for that? Except waiting?
wouldn't u use your wipers afterwards to remove excess before driving? I would.
was wondering if you could put solution in the washer reservoir?
Any long term effects on the windshield after using this?
This is very much the same as what's sold commercially. It will not harm the windshield
Using your defroster really helps, and I actually would recommend straight ethyl alcohol for that reason.
Although this does make me wonder what you could do with an empty garden hose auto-mix sprayer containing ethyl alcohol. Could make it possible to spray a larger amount of it around.
So it's about 70% ipa rubbing alcohol mixed with about 1/3 water 🤔?
Is that not about than 100% ipa alcohol and the same amount water mix? 🤔 50% water to 50% ipa mixed together. 🤔
Just look at the recipe.

Does it matter the % of alcohol?
+Tanita Megan 50% or more.
+Living On A Dime If less should I use less water?
+Tanita Megan Yes. I would do 2 parts alcohol and 1 part water. So 1 cup alcohol and 1/2 cup but honestly it's not exact. I just dump into my bottle so that it looks like I have double the alcohol to my water.
+Tanita Megan The MSDS on popular de-icer products identifies 62% alcohol and 5-6% antifreeze.. If you used 70% rubbing alcohol (w/o diluting), it would be comparable to the store bought stuff.

Does hydrogen peroxide work as well?
No it's not the same thing.
Fabio!
yeh this did NOT work for me ....
⭐⭐⭐
Wrong. It only melts snow, not ice. Even straight alcohol does nothing to ice.
Do not live near Eskimos and your car will be OK.
great tip. Florida rarely sees ice, nor snow for that matter. Not true this week with 26 degree weather and no ice scraper anywhere to found in the neighborhood. The old turn on the hose to the windshield with the defroster going worked but not convenient when dressed for work.
So true but we Floridians live up north now, at least some of us.
the problem is .... thesedays hard to find an alcohol because of COVID-19 ......:(
i usually spray shaving cream on a rag or towel and wipe it on my windshield the night before if you know it's going to snow or get icy as this makes it a water snow repellent. also a little Vaseline on a rag wipe the windshield with it makes the snow not stick to your windshield. the snow will still accumulate in your windshield it will easily wipe off so you don't have to scrape it off.
I think he said to wipe it off after your done!
I have done this on my car door locks that had several layers of ice on them. Thank you!
Eeerrrrrrrr what ratios folks???
which is better the alcohol or the vinegar version
Alcohol is my thought I tried both.
wont alcohol damage your car paint ???
No, it's what's in commercial deicer.
@@LivingOnADime thank you for this recipe.
I just added about 1/2 c apple cider vinegar to a gal of coolish water this morning and it DID work! You still have to scrape it off w/ an ice scraper. But it becomes slush immediately. I waited for a few seconds to let the ice get soaked in. I did one window at a time and on the windshield I just did one side at a time.
Make this put it gallons at stores
what's the reason to add water though? thanks
Nice!
Will this ruin the paint job of a car?
It's just rubbing alcohol. It shouldn't.
I just pour some warm water over my winshield and door windows and it melts right away.
+My frugal life You run the risk of cracking the glass - be careful.
...years ago an old boss told me to use warm water to deice my door. But guess what.. it iced back up again. So, I was thinking instead of using 2 to 1 ratio, why not use half and half...? Could work better.. just saying.
Yes,Mike does seem to be a really nice guy! I need my husband to follow him around for a few weeks!
