This was the right move. This lets people play 4.0 who want to, lets them skirt the failed launch of a broken patch, lets them have their sale event for christmas, lets them hit a deadline...
This is literally the best of both worlds that wasnt them delaying the patch, and imagine how much better the game would have been if this was the process for 3.18 and every other patch?

    • @Eagle6Airsoft
      @Eagle6Airsoft Месяц назад +7

It’s not the right move, it’s like giving someone half a fence and saying isn’t it better than no fence? Ignoring the fact that the fence should have been completed for the deadline. What’s better than this ? Completing the task on time.

@@ThreeGoddesses it’s releasing it for the sake of crowd pleasing a few people playing to placate them during a time when people have time off, while sacrificing everything else. How much development time was wasted trying to fix bugs instead of doing desperately needed refactors, because you wanted to play something new now… This whole thing is 10 years late because idiots demanded something to play right now. They should have skipped trying to hit a Christmas deadline and kept the devs on refactors and feature development.

Not much play time since streamers make up most of this time. Normal players have a VERY small part in those hours. I would guess each streamer would play approximately (just guessing probably higher) about 2 hrs a day and play maybe 5 days. 10hrs a week playing the game per streamer would take the place of 16 people. Most games that people are into (actively playing) get more time then 30 min a week. I want this game to be good, but I also watch the streamers more then I play. I haven't played in a year, but watch Mike's "Week in Review" each week. Once they make a stable release to live there will be more action. They cannot make absolute promises with game development. Even if they do what you ask they will not meet your expectations because they are not grounded in the reality of game dev. The community doesn't get this when the entire video game business is in the same boat and people now have unrealistic expectations.. only a few games seem to be accepted and everything else gets crapped on.. Group thinkers and streamers complaining ad nauseam. And none of them are making the games just arm chair coaching cause they know better. SMH. Its easy - stop complaining and funding the game and go play something else. BTW SQ42 was part of the package to be funded, and so... if you didnt catch that.

It's the best move other than delaying it till this spring and this lets them do a large server meshing test which can serve them well as they can see all the remaining bottlenecks in a real environment. Its extremely important that they get the server bottlenecks out of the way and get the servers running rock solid before adding all kind of other content.

@ crowd funding provides equity capital and by that backers are investors or investor-like. Yes, every project has failings. Therefore in business development project plans and business plans are expected. They provide usually projections of three to five years ahead. So far Chris Roberts failed to deliver every single milestone right in time. In a normal Venture Capital world but also in company internal project controlling such a desastrous project management or development management would have caused the replacement of the project leaders.
You asked how long i would expect development to take? Very easy answer: I can not tell you. But when you finance a project you listen to the people who apply for the funds and look at their plans. From there on you frequently check the plans and performances. Usually you allow in a good will scenario three major fails. At the first fail you say „shit can happen“, at the second fail you say „time to learn and make necessary adjustments“ and the third time you say „obviously the responsible persons are neither able to learn nor to show leadership“.
Chris Roberts failed how often? Far too often. And you see the usual effects: the good people who carry the idea get frustrated due to bad leadership and leave the project.
And by the way Chris Roberts proved the long term experiences regarding innovative projects: In the first phase you need the visionary mind who sets the goal regardless of probabilities. But as soon as the things get into routine development you need a true coordinator to take the lead. A person who is able to keep the overview and who is able to lead an organization with 1000 employees. The visionary mind stays on board but is embedded in a group of decision makers to keep him on track. This is not the case at CIG. And if you listen carefully to all the „Around the Verse“ and „ISC“ you very often hear quotes from people telling about Chris Robert‘s micro management which kills the process again and again.

    features is "content"
but they mean it like this: another ship, gun or location that is made with present and tested tools provide at new "thing" in the verse to discover, use etc. BUT this is very unlikely to provide issues for the build as a whole since it is just things already in the arranged in a new way.
If you want to add things like fire-propagation, penetration, maelstrom etc. these are "features" that interact with existing systems and therefore can create unforeseen issues. Just because firepropagation works in a greybox development window does not mean it will transfer into the verse the same way a new location would just drop in.

  • @BoBoZoBo

The features versus content discussion drives me absolutely bonkers. I had to take a double take when they said that they were differentiating those two, because quite frankly that is pretty standard practice in software end systems development at an Enterprise level.
The differentiation is fairly clear. Features are what allow you to do things, content is what you do with them. Features are foundational, they are the rules that you develop your content around.
Putting an entertainment system with a server, TV, lights, and fantastic audio is a platform with multiple features. The content is all the video, music and lighting effects that are allowed by that platform and features.
NPC behavior and gameplay mechanics are features; the types of missions and events you can have around those features are the content. You're never going to have great content if your features are still in development and constantly changing.
It doesn't surprise me that they just figured this out. An alpha is generally a private and limited testing, completely disembodied from anything that resembles marketing and retail sales. And we all know CIGs own interpretation of what an alpha is.
Now we see how they've changed the definition of what a LIVE delivery standard is.

  • @l3lackoutsMedia

The differentiation between new features and content is arbitrary in some way, but generally new content is something that follows established processes and guidelines and fills in more story with those available well tested procedures and guidelines.
A new feature on the other hand is a fundamental change in the core of those procedures, guidelines and generally well known and available processes for making said content mentioned above.
Generally, the idea is content can be pumped out with an existent toolset for example in a known amount of time, but if a core thing for something has to be added that changed the toolset and the whole procedure for making content then it's definitely a feature.
To make another example: Content is when you make some visual art with photoshop/gimp and a feature is when you change photoshop/gimp itself.
The main problem is when you constanly change your equivalent to photoshop/gimp for game development its really really hard to get into a good flow for making content with those toolsets due to the unstable nature of the whole situation.

CIG is a company that sells a rug, pulls it out from under you, then when you cry out rug pull they show you a single intern sewing 1 thread in the rug every week and say “It’s not a scam see, still a work in promise!” Cryptozoo had more progress than some of these ships.

They didnt expect it for 3.18. Simple as that. They only started with the separate release branches after 3.18 with PES. In general, Turbulent seems to have been stepping in and actually getting shit done. They seem to have up-to-date cloud knowledge. Their work on PES and SM seem invaluable. It seems previous it was just the engine devs and I dont think they were quite up to date with all the fancy new clouds till. Although there were DevOps on camera years ago, but I wonder what they are even doing all day.

Realistically, if I was a company who was building a product that gets pieced together as I go (basically any SaaS company). Who just so happens to have a fan base who is willing to alpha test and provide me investment money, I wouldn’t invest in top tier instance classes in AWS either. Not to mention AWS Aurora db is really expensive. Why burn out of cashflow before I even launch the game and collect a subscription ($15-$20/m)

The straws that broke it for me was introducing the problem of cargo and then selling you the solution of the ATLS. Then nerf all of the ships after you sell them, this makes people regret what they get (longtime corsair guy and deemer just love those types of ships). The fix for the first was for instance self-destruct your reclaimer and then you can actually move the boxes with efficiency as there is no other effective means. The second is to buy a newer ship that claims to do the same things as the previous ship except the nerf opened up a new "hole" in functionality of these ships.

I play daily. And enjoy my time on it. Regardless of what the game will become. I've got my money's worth. The fact that more is coming is fantastic. Looking at 4.0 as the milestone that it is is a better approach. Server meshing is working. Had one server recovery last night. It was less than 30 seconds and my mission persisted. I see that as a win.

Good vid as usual. The 32million hours did make me think, how many other games in Alpha phase get these kind of numbers? So it may not seem a lot but putting it into perspective is probably eye opening.

27:50 SC is CRAZY niche, and getting more and more niche. Why they really need a plan to capture mass appeal and unless they change a few things it simply will not do that and eventually need to survive forever on selling ships which is of course going to happen and put them all on the store all the time or grab the attention of casual players all the way through hardcore and not make it feel super drastic in achieving things. Hardcores will naturally achieve more but without casuals feeling they to can achieve something then there is no reason to play. They need to embrace the MMO thing and throttle back a touch on so much Sim aspect IMO. Too few want to spend a day working to log in to feel like they are working again. It's way to easy to be disengaged in the game and log out. MAYBE the mythical 9:1 AI to player ration will fix that and waaaaaay more PvE missions that are not just fedex missions and copy/paste bunker missions???? who knows

I understand that all issues on the issue counsel are tested by less than ten testplayers and autoclosed by lack of ten. Since zero devs are playing the game there now are zero bugs. It is Vulcan logic. We win.
