Funding is not failing as much as backer trust is being tested. You do that crap with the Corsair, Redeemer and Paladin, and people are not going to spend their money to have the new hotness nerfed in the future. New features and ships for said feature drive funding. New combat ships in a sea of combat ships don't make the money when you nerf them.

    • @aaronhunyady
      @aaronhunyady Месяц назад +25

For me, it's not even the ships. I never assume ships will remain true to their original concepts and specs. For me, what turns me off is CIG's clear abandonment of all interesting gameplay... space exploration, science, even mining (the ONLY developed gameplay outside of combat) is having functionality taken away. They are making a boring first person shooter game which requires a lot of running around to stock your ship and I don't see too much else on the horizon.

Yea Star Citizen isn't going to appeal to the mainstream gamer and will repel the massive PVE gamer demographic that powers the most successful MMOs in the world due to its open PVP concept.
With all of its characteristics, Star Citizen as an MMO is headed towards becoming a small niche MMO akin to EVE at best, but its increasingly likely that it's headed towards one inevitable destination: FLOP CITY.

CIG, as a company, lacks trustworthiness. Their marketing often claims the game is "playable now," but the moment a bug surfaces, the response shifts to "it's an alpha-what do you expect?"
The game offers some fun for the first 100 hours, but after that, it becomes a repetitive, uninspired experience. Buying ships feels futile; they’re mainly for testing new features. Beyond the novelty, the core gameplay remains unchanged. The AI is still lackluster, enemies often glitch into T-poses, missions fail to complete, elevators malfunction, and players frequently fall through the floor. The experience is riddled with persistent issues that undermine long-term enjoyment.

I'd imagine if SC came out in all its glory it be the only game you'd ever want to play. It's also supposed to have an extremely in-depth arena commander that's akin to ready player one. Where you can do pure pvp without risking your ships or life.
We were supposed to have the battlefield clone years ago. And now we know that vanduul and their systems aren't coming in 1.0 or even a year or two after 1.0, so that eliminates large-scale PVE operations.
The only large PVE content is for orgs to make a base and make a space station. Which if done in pyro clasifies as pvp content.
It's odd that the game focuses so much on being a good person and has elements to deter mass murder but its also the main focus of the content they create.

came back today after a 6 month hiatus give or take, and its in a more sorry state than when i left.
Master modes severely ruined the game for me, and the lack of stability paired with it, i just cant get with it anymore. The game is starting to feel more and more arcade like, and is losing its appeal.
elevators were broken across multiple stations, the ui is still buggy (no player party names for me) and when i did land at a bunker the npc spawned in mid air surrounding me, shot me from all sides and killed me.
i dont see whats fun about struggling to gear up, struggling to get asop terminals working, struggling to get an elevator that will take you to you hangar and not just the pads, struggling to get atc to work, incredibly slow nav speeds, then you finally get planet side to your mission (luckily this time it did show up in accepted) and the npcs are spawning in mid air and you die.

    For example :
    * when you give S10 torps to finish off other big ships where 4-10 people are on board.
    * you create missions like 'jump town' that creates insane amount of mayhem and turns every player (including me) into murder hobos that shoot on sight.

Regarding the ships: Yes, they are boring in many ways, and the biggest being that there's either no loops or the loops we do have are place holder. "Alpha" doesn't matter anymore. Name an industrial loop that's really going to rely on server meshing....
I've said it before and I will die on this hill. The Mole is just a ship with 3 prospector cockpits welded onto it. A copy and paste of code to achieve the same fundamental functionality. So to actually make a game with gameplay, the focus should have been on creating all of the small ships and their relevant game loops from the very beginning. This would have allowed CIG to really nail down design philosophies for each manufacturer without having to iterate on large, more time-consuming ship models, and would have allowed them to nail down how many of the game loops could have worked. Then they just do as they did with the Mole, and design a chassis around the core functionality they took from a small ship.
And people might say that they needed to make the big ships because of funding, but I disagree. I think many small ships to start with, and much of the corresponding gameplay, would have resulted in the same if not more funding. More new players would show up because there's all this actual stuff to do, and a plethora of smaller, affordable ships to get your foot in the door. Plus, imagine the goodwill CIG could have saved by us playing that game, without knowing or worrying about the BMM and when it'll finally go into production, or when the 600i will get reworked.

So I am an original backer. I did everything I could after my original backing of the game in 2012 to ignore it with only the occasional check in to see if development was actually progressing. Which for years there was nothing until they released the hangar simulator. Which I tried for a few minutes and then deleted. Again, I didn't want to spoil anything. I knew anything in a pre-release state was going to be garbo. I also really didn't want to spend a whole lot more money not knowing if I was throwing good money after bad. Well I finally in the last few weeks this year before IAE decided to take the plunge into the game. I spent a bit more and was able to play the game. It's a buggy mess that is in many ways very frustrating to play. I did it mostly so I could at least get some baseline knowledge on how the main game play mechanics are working. Like how to navigate, how to pilot a ship, how to mine, how to run a bunker, how to get out of jail, and other game play loops in the game currently that probably are not going to change much. I bought a few things, mostly CCU's warbonds for upgrades later and just started trying to do that more than anything else. The only big thing I bought was a BiS F8C as well. That's it. Still it is a lot. At this point I am now looking to buy a few more warbond CCU's in the future, and probably won't play much again after that until release. I just really don't want to spoil myself on the game too much. I am doing the save stanton event to get those permanent items added to my account. I wish I hadn't missed a few of those in the past, but that is what happens when you ignore the game.

Because they can’t sell each feature individually as they come up with a concept, but they can sell another ship to people who like the idea of being a medic/doctor, or a salvager, or blockade runner. I don't know if it's a particular person or if really they sit around and laugh at how stupid we are, because if that's the case I will just start laughing at how stupid they actually are. Do they really think if they are good to the people that are supporting them and actually follow through on the promises that they make we won't continue to fund them? That is the only way they can guarantee that funding will not dry up. Be good to your customers! Don't screw them over because eventually they will realize what is going on and stop supporting you. Of course you have those die-hard White knights and hopelessly ignorant people, but for the most part we all want this game to be good. If you are good and do the things you say without pulling the rug out from underneath of us we will get on board and stay on board. The moment you start disrespecting us and treating us like we are idiots and just a meal ticket... We will start to bail. Simple as that. We know that you can't always hit every goal, but if you tell us a ship is going to be a certain way and then you change it to sell another ship that is shady. Sugarcoat it however you want, but the plane and simple truth of it is that if you offer someone an item for money then you should do your best to meet all reasonable expectations when delivering that item. Don't bait and switch and pretend it's for balancing purposes. Don't tell us you're not going to be selling something and then turn around and offer a cash grab option to buy that very thing you weren't going to sell. I mean.
Hangars and elevators (cargo or player one) dont works.
12 Years and the most important stuff in the game dont works. If elevators don't work you are stuck, in hangars dont works you are stuck. If any of those 2 things dont works, CIG should stop working on anything else and make it work. If a patch or a new feature brake it, they should not implement it before it doesn't broke any of those.
3 days to do the 6/6 save stanton cargo missions. Elevator broke on almost every servers, hangar bugged making you lose you ship with all say cargo, or impossible to have a hangar to land at pyro station etc.
This is pure insanity that after 12 years they still can't make the most basic and gamebraking stuff works !

On the topic of players being bored with ships, I think this is potentially THE most important part:
What has kept SC afloat for so long is the ships being REALLY cool. So many types of designs, with interiors, that's been an extremely cool part of SC, and it's what has been holding people over while we wait for the actual gameplay. And that's the problem, waiting for the actual gameplay.
You can create a new ship, like the Intrepid, that has alot of versatility, modern functions like weapon racks, engineering terminals, those clever storage holds. But if there is nothing new to actually DO with those ships, it's a hard sell.
For a gameplay loop as simple as a box delivery mission for example, it doesn't matter if it's a cutter, a nomad, an intrepid, or even a zeus or a polaris: The Gameplay Experience remains the same. And if that gameplay experience is SUPER buggy, and SUPER clunky, and SUPER boring? Well then it doesn't matter if the new ship is cool, there's nothing in the game to actually do with it.
Having an "exploration ship" without any exploration gameplay loses pretty much all it's interest on arrival.
Having a "hacking ship" without anyhackingn gameplay loses pretty much all it's interest on arrival.
Having a "base building ship" without any base building gameplay loses pretty much all it's interest on arrival.
CIG, we have seen the ships, we love them. Now can you make the universe and the game FOR those ships, so we actually have a reason to log on and play.

Star citizen won't have new players until they fix performance issues, I've tried to convince my friends to play but I look stupid when 1 can't even download the game, the other has to kill himself to get out of habs and the other has 2 fps.
There's been a lot of discussion on fixing server performance but realistically client side performance has to be improved for more people to play the game.

Completely abandoning the BMM after the devs left has probably cost CIG a lot of funding. I am sure there are a lot of reasons for the 'why,' but that does not change the effects on consumers. Why would you spend $600+ on a ship if they can show it almost done, represent it as almost done, then stop all development and release plans indefinitely?
OTOH, a *lot* of neat stuff has come online over the past year. Polaris, static meshing, Pyro, graphics improvments like cloud and water tech, etc.

Notice how they banked so much on cargo hauling actually being fun. Between the tractor beam nerfs then ATLS release, then the release of the Zeus and Starlancer ships, which were a flop because they couldnt deliver a stable and fun cargo hauling loop, they bet hard on cargo this year and lost. Thats the main reason why sales are down this year. If cargo hauling was fun, and cargo elevators were actually working when 3.23 or even 3.24 dropped, we would not even be having this conversation right now, and I guarantee most of us would own a Zeus or Starlancer....

You laugh at the grey haired pilot.. I was 50 when spent my first dollars on this project. I am now 63. Im not laughing at the jokes any more. I honestly believe that when this game releases I stand a good chance of not being here. This game will not be finished in the next ten years, if ever.
I believe the final game will follow the historical success rate of the patches that built this software to this point. They make promises about a patch and deliver 10% of it.
This promised game will deliver about 10% of a finished game. If they deliver all the star systems they will be 10% complete. The get one mechanic in the game to work and fill in whatever else they failed at by selling partially functional ships that no one was expecting. RSI is essentially a circus. @@0PsychosisMedia0 Neither of these is correct and I've done it a lot. However you cannot gift something purchased with credits and you cannot melt the LTI token given to you as referral bonus.
The LTI token can be upgraded but not melted back down so if you plan to upgrade these ships make sure you always have an upward escape path incase the ship you are on gets drastically changed or you no longer want it.
If you have very valuable CCUs you would never want to lose through melting and are unable to require I would consider using these on unmeltable ships but again I would be careful how high you go especially this early in development.

As clarification "package" meaning "game package".
I believe "packages" as in bundle deals can also be melted but you can't melt individual ships, so if have one good CCU chain you want in a bundle but another ship you want to melt you can't do it without losing the desired ship also.

I cancelled my Imperator subscription 2 years ago because I did a cost benefit analysis for myself. I costed out all of the subscriber items that I received and tallied up the cost of those items that I would have actually paid money for if I had to buy them separately. Based on this, I received subscriber items worth only 22% of the value of my annual subscription price. That's not a good return on investment from my perspective and I'm done giving CIG money for nothing.

Take a human ship maker and an alien one and create small-medium and big poaching ships with cells for animals. I have a 1% hope that the merchantman will have cells and make it a place to trade exotic aliens

as far as players are concerned, game enjoyment has been diminishing for quite some time. it's not just that bugs are still a major issue (bugs that are vaguely familiar from ten years ago) or that ships are still incomplete (ships from ten years ago), or that promises made are constantly being broken (promises made now with no intention of keeping), or that devs are monkeying with game physics to mitigate game balance issues (game physics that are marching away from excitingly realistic to stupidly dumb). it's the realization that we aren't dealing with a vital new company too busy pushing the game experience envelop to deal with the little things we care about so much we're dealing with a greedy, bloated company whose too concerned keeping the bucks flowing in to bother dealing with anything else...

You are a "customer" who is invested in the company doing well. You are not going to get any money from the company turning a profit. Problem for me is I just don't really trust them in anyway anymore they say going to do things they really don't there just extended empty promises, they sell you a ship and they nerf it to death, to me that's very dishonest the only changes you can make to something you sold me, is to make it better never worse and that's with my consent and evenmore problematic is some of those nerfs seem motivated by new ship sales which is extremely scummy. This game isn't fun it looks great it could be a master piece, just not under this leadership.

    • @CyberneticArgumentCreator

It's not a game, ignore all nerfs or buffs. Their purpose isn't to balance, it's to push you towards trying what they want you to fly and get data on while making sure ships aren't dealing 100% more damage than another ship that's supposed to be a peer. There is no nuance.
These two ships are the same size and purpose? Okay this one randomly has 30% more DPS. They are fine with that. Or they have the same DPS but this one has 2x the shields. Arbitrary. Placeholder values in a placeholder system of how ships work.

Yet in space, we have to fly at at the lower range of todays jets.. in space? It's the flight model that's boring as bat shit and if you can't get that right, how are new people in the free fly events going to think about pledging? At least with the old flight model, it was exciting with the prospect of getting better at flying.

Hot take: I haven't played more than an hour or two since before physicalized cargo/cargo grids/salvage/inventory update/UI updates/ship HUD updates/persistence changes/servers fixing themselves and continuing where you left off, and just reinstalled this week to play with a friend. There are enough changes that the game is MUCH more pleasant. That's the last, what? 18 months of changes?
I think they're very close to accelerating. The dev adage is that software projects pop out of nowhere in an extremely ugly state and then look like nothing is happening until 80-90% complete, then it all comes together super rapidly and morphs into the final product.
In January 2021 I said this would be "a game" in 2025. That means something with enough content and loops to dig into and feel like a game and not a tech demo sandbox for RPers. It's REALLY near now. I think you might be too close to it, Mike, because when you see it and play it daily you can't gauge progress. If they get Pyro out and get 300+ people on PU servers before the end of 2025, it might actually feel like a game.
Then again, will all ground missions be unplayable still? Will cargo boxes just refuse to move and float in midair? Will freight and regular elevators stop working? Will they be able to add in functions to clean up objects at a rate that keeps servers from grinding to a halt after a few hours of uptime with people playing on them?
Will they remove the "unnecessarily tedious sim bits" like having to-
stop, tap F, tap left click, alt-H to remove your helmet, press left click to eat, realize your helmet isn't coming off with the keybind, press I for inventory, drag the helmet off, press I again to close inventory, left click to eat the food, open inventory with another I press, drag your helmet back onto your head, wait to make sure it actually goes onto your head, press I again to close inventory-
to eat? All that instead of walking up to the counter and hitting F once to eat quickly and it just instantly happens? Or maybe we could just have a food and water supply bought at a vendor in bulk that sits inside your suit like a fuel tank and is slowly used up as time passes? Camelbak tech? It's like the people designing some of these things have never played a video game before, it's NUTS.
