I do believe the older veteran was white. The ballet aspect was for the aesthetic of the video, not to allude to the marginalization of it as a sport. The “it is your brother’s world for a while longer” doesn’t mean that the daughter (women) is going to be special over the son (men). It just means that eventually and hopefully women and men will be seen as equals, and women will no longer be treated as second class citizens. The shining of the light on the marginalized groups in this video doesn’t suggest that white men (or white people in general) don’t suffer too. I think the concept might have gone a tad bit over your head. You can sympathize with the groups in the video (and even empathize) without being like “what about me”. It’s still cool that you reacted to Brandi Carlile, they’re great 😊 Also, they’re Americana not Country.

The young Black ballerina represents how they were excluded and banned from ever getting accepted into ballet schools and companies - until just recently.

dude, there was a white male in the video. It was the veteran. We all saw it. Sheesh don’t get your feelings hurt so fast. There are truly marginalized people out there and that’s what this song is about.

As many have noted there was a white man in the video.
    Yes…we all go through stuff.
I’m a white make but I’ve never been discriminated against because of my sex or skin color.
I have been physically assaulted for being gay.
I watched my single (by divorce) mother work two , sometimes three jobs to support our family because as a woman she couldn’t earn enough at one job.
Your first thought when seeing marginalized people shouldn’t be to see if you’re represented among them,
It’s disappointing to me how few people react to the line “they come to kick dirt in your face, to call you weak and displace you after carrying your baby on your back across the desert” which is an obvious reference to immigrants fleeing poverty, violence and oppression in their homelands.
It’s also, essentially, the story of Mary, the mother d Christ.
We’ve lost our humanity when we demonize and vilify vulnerable people.

Wow, this is terrible. From the cringe shouty intro to this tone deaf “but what about white men?” take… yikes.

Amazing song. But the reaction was pretty stunning. I clearly saw a white male in the video and have no idea how this would be interpreted as advocating for raising females above males. Very odd interpretation.

agreed- the fact that this was his first reaction was pretty disappointing. as the first video I've ever seen from them that doesn't make me wanna watch any more. the video was about marginalization, and white males (and white females, like me) get plenty of representation in the majority of media.

My favorite course in college was "Race, Class and Gender". Historically our culture clearly benefits some and disadvantages others based on those three factors. In order to move toward a more egalitarian society we should all be extending a hand up to those who are disadvantaged in some way. I am sorry you felt that you were ostracized from the story of "The Joke". It might help to look outward and see where you might have advantages that are denied others. I will look for how young, white males are feeling threatened by the current state of our culture and how I might make them feel more secure.

If you do nothing else go see her live, you can listen to Her.Seeing this live on the grammys but seriously I paid almost $400 to go see her live. And it's worth every single penny.Because if you think she sounds good now you should see her singing on a stage

Hi Kyle and Alanna. I'm just going to post this comment for everyone who views this to clarify some things. I'm the one who requested this song. I was taken aback by Kyle's reaction at first. However, we've had some excellent conversations about this song. I'm not going to go into specifics, but there are underlying things going on and I just want everyone to know how much love and respect I have for both of these wonderful human beings! Enough said. 🥰

If you want to try and justify their racism, sexism and homophobia... you're complicit. ''having a bad time'' does NOT make ppl bigots. Being awful pp does.
