You guys are such great cheerleaders for everybody , i dont think you guys really get how wonderful what you guys do is ! Such a safe homey spot for honest opinion. Keep up the great work ! Thank you ! 😍😍
You have discovered Brandi Carlisle. Now, explore her on your own. She is talented, beautiful in all ways and very diverse in her songwriting and performing.🤟
1st time i saw her was at the Grammys .She showed how a gr8 singer has contol of their vocal instrument while cradling the audience in her hand. She put on a clinic that night. Just pure artistry.
It’s an anthem for the marginalized, and that’s why it’s so beautiful ❤️. I’m so happy that my favorite artist was able to emote these feelings from you both like she does for me. This will be on repeat for the rest of the day.
THANK YOU. I’m a nerdy gay guy and this song perfectly describes how it felt growing up. Brandi is the next Joni Mitchell and a real deal treasure. I knew Amber would cry. Amazing live standing ovation performance from the Grammys. Much love to you both.
I am the loving father of a nerdy trans son, and given the chance, I'd buy you a cup of coffee or tea, chat with you, tell you stupid dad jokes to make you laugh, and give you a hug. Why? Because everyone deserves love and kindness in a world where there are those who think cruelty is strength. Please, take care of yourself, Benjamin77.
@@stevenbentley310Just saw this 7 months later. Forgot I made this comment. I’ll take that coffee and hug! Thank you for the support of your son and being a good person.
Brandi just paid tribute to Joni Mitchell at the Kennedy Center Honors a couple of weeks ago. A master paying tribute to a master. Its nice to see you guys listen to a contemporary artist.
Brandi actually performed the entire “Blue” album by Joni Mitchell live, with her permission of course. They’ve become friends. The album was very impactful in Brandi’s life.
Hi Jay and Amber…. I’ve watched a ton of your reaction videos and some of your family content. I found you just before baby Luca was born. Such a beautiful family. I was so lucky enough to see Brandi this past Mother’s Day 2023 and omgosh was she amazing. She is so incredible live on stage and she’s a beautiful soul off stage as well. I’m so touch by your emotions and love that you gave Brandi your spotlight! I hope you will dive into her catalog more soon. She has a ton of great songs…not all of them will melt you as the joke has. :). It is my personal favorite of hers. Stay Blessed. Gem in Florida.
Such a powerful message; compassion, empathy...and there's no other artist out there with the vocal power to carry this song. Brandi Carlile is simply amazing, a generational talent. Listen to "The Story" next.
I can go die happy now! This is all I’ve been waiting for, this song always makes me cry. Trust me that ALL her music is amazing. Her and the twins are amazing songwriters, and her voice is just unbelievable. Her new album In These Silent Days is genius (so are all the other ones). “The Story” next please! Since it’s what really put them on the map back in 2007.
I LOVE The Story. That song was a big part of my childhood and it's the one that put Brandi on a lot of people's radars. Her song from the movie Onward called Carried Me With You is another one of her songs that just gets me.
That is one of the best songs I have ever heard. She's up there with John Prine and Randy Newman and Joni Mitchell and Townes Van Zandt in pure songwriting and lyrical ability.
If you have Sirus XM radio, Channel 60 Outlaw Country sounds like it might be a perfect fit for you. So much good music not played on mainstream radio. Keb Mo and Shooter Jennings have become two of my favorites.
She performed this song LIVE at the grammy award show a few years ago (she won the grammy with this song!). To say it was it was an iconic performance is an understatement! The crowd was on its' feet!
When the heart aches for the pain of others…for the humanity of our brothers and sisters…the heart is a golden one. You both have this. Thank you for sharing your gold.
I had never heard this song in my life, this woman's voice is very powerful, the vocal ranges are amazing, this song reminds me of The Cranberries - Zombie and Linger.
Love her!!! So overlooked for more ""commercial"" songs with studio enhancements!!! She is simple & pure!!! If this song doesn't affect you - you have no SOUL!!!!! Truth is what we need these days!!! This song is pure truth!!!
Thomas bowman. Me too. 41 years for me. I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing Brandi a few times over the years, once at her home outside of Seattle and emceed a benefit concert she did for her foundation “Looking Out”. I don’t know if you noticed or knew her, but the late Rita Houston from WFUV was one of the people in this video. She and Brandi were good friends. Couldn’t be happier for Brandi’s success. No one more deserving.
Thank you for the introduction to such a beautiful song. I am a new Brandi Carlile fan, because of her group "The Highwomen" Thank you again for the tears today. When a song can bring one to tears it has to be fantastic. Thanks again you guys rock
I can’t believe I’ve missed this reaction. If you can catch her doing this at the Grammys! One of the best live performances at the Grammys ever! Powerful! It’s how music can change the way people think! Wow! Love you two!❤️❤️❤️❤️💪
I had my fingers crossed that you'd do Brandi Carlile's "The Joke" on a Female Friday. This is my favorite of hers (and she has many great songs). I love the message of how many people feel excluded from life, belittled and struggling to find his or her place in this world of woe. Society can be so cruel to people labeled as "other" or "not our kind of people". We are all unique, special individuals with so much to contribute to this world. Brandi points out that ultimately the joke will be on those who strive to put down any of God's creatures.
Jay, Amber, thank you for allowing us to share your journey while you experience the music that is the songbook of our lives. Your exuberance, empathy, and joy, that you so freely show, while you do, is a blessing to us, your faithful RSR family. The passage of time can harden us, but you are there to remind us of what that music means, and how we felt when we first heard it. You punch through the walls that time has built around our hearts. Thank you for the blessing that your example provides to me.
Hold Out Your Hand...has become maybe my favorite Brandi Carslile song..The Story is Beautiful and the way she sang that song caught my ear in 2007 or 08.She and the Avett Brothers toured together and that's when I really sat down for a listen to her music...and fell in love with her voice.
So, so, SO glad you're finally getting to Brandi! But I'm sure I'm not alone in recommending that you do "The Story" next. There's a moment in that song (and everyone who knows it knows EXACTLY what I'm talking about) that'll make your jaw drop and your eyes go buggy. It's one of my favorite songs of all time, and it deserves all the accolades it's gotten.
Jay and Amber, it is an honor to be here as you share your true colors. You show us you are real. The reason I chose a life in music is exactly what just happened to all of us here. Music is truly the healing force of the universe and kind people like you with a platform of heart and soul and joy….of peace, love and unity reminds me so much of the words of Dr. Maya Angelou…”We are more alike, my friends, than we are unalike.” Thanks for bringing great music into our lives and thank you for being there to share with us. I have taken to ending my show with “make somebody smile”
"The Joke" won 2 Grammy awards for Best American Roots Song and Best American Roots Performance in 2019. Brandi Carlile said on NPR of the track, "There are so many people feeling misrepresented [today] ... So many people feeling unloved. Boys feeling marginalized and forced into these kind of awkward shapes of masculinity that they do or don't belong in ... so many men and boys are trans or disabled or shy. Little girls who got so excited for the last election (2016), and are dealing with the fallout. The song is just for people that feel under-represented, unloved or illegal."
Please revisit Brandi when you can...I know there are *so many artists* out there, but Brandi gets into your soul. I was lucky enough to see her live once, and her voice was UNREAL. "The Story" is awesome, but the Bear Creek album's "Raise Hell," "Hard Way Home," "Save Part of Yourself," and "That Wasn't Me" are a few more of my favorites. Love you guys...I am a full-time teacher and single mom, and your videos bring me happiness every day. Thanks for doing them.
I love how music can connect us in such a profound way. I also appreciate how you all believe in a better world and do your part from such a sincere place. It matters…the world needs more of this and your message to make someone smile is beautiful and important. 💚💜 thank you, guys.
There are SO many of Brandi's songs that I want to recommend to you guys, but I'll stick with three. "The Story" was her first hit around 2007, and I believe is her strongest melody/song and really shows her vocal power. "The Mother" is a fantastic song about parenthood that I think you would love. "The Eye" is another I'd recommend if you want possibly the best vocal harmonies EVER.
This song is so beautifully done with such a wonderful message and really hits emotionally. Your comments are heartfelt and appreciated. Thank you so much!❤
Around 2000 we were lucky enough to discover Brandi when she opened for Jonny Lang at the House of Blues in N.O. It was Jonny’s acoustic tour and one of the best shows I’ve ever heard. Brandi came out with guitar and the guys that play with her ( the twins!). We stood at the old wooden stage right in front of them while they sat on stools and simply played acoustic guitar and sang just like we were in our own living room! IT. WAS. AMAZING!! ♥️ She has such a powerful voice to be so soft and soothing. She said that she was always told that her voice was a mix of Patsy Cline and - Amber, JANIS JOPLIN! because she can wail!! After, we got to meet her and bought her first limited release CD which only had maybe 5 tracks but we wore it out. Needless to say we became fans on the spot! And I’ve mentioned Jonny Lang before! You guys really need to check him out for guitar skills that are unmatched and a voice like none other! And yeah he played that night sitting in a chair just tapping his foot and brought the house down!! Didn’t even need accompaniment for most of the show. Great reaction guys! Love y’all. 🎶 ♥️ 🎶
What a unique voice. I really, really like Brandi Carlile. Never heard her before. What a great song for today. We rarely take the time to understand that *everyone* has experienced pain, fear and loss and we should help each other get through it. That's the Golden Rule in action.
Oh you HAVE to watch this live at the Grammys. Got a standing ovation. I only listen to that version now. It’s soooo amazing. Even more emotional. !!!! The Story is great by her. Also if u like this Americana/Roots genre you will also love Jason Isbell. Cover Me Up and If We were Vampires r 2 wonderful songs by him!
Omg! Yes, been requesting Brandi for awhile now. One of my favorite artists. Love her. So many great songs. Your reactions were exactly what they should have been. Not many singers make me cry, she does. You should check out the story or turpentine or beginning to feel the years. Have a nice weekend all of you
Brandi carlile is one of my favorite artists. She's got so many great songs. I discovered her in 2006, and since then I don't think there's been a week where I haven't listened to at least one of her songs.
I love you two! Thanks for all you bring to us. I saw Brandi in 2006 then she performed here in Tucson. Ever since then, every time I hear her voice, it just touches my soul, and my eyes well up.You should do a video of her song "Turpentine", if you want a good cry!. It's about her brother. Man, she is really young in that one.
Easy follow up for Brandi Carlile…. The Story. Absolutely amazing. She is such an incredible story teller. Her voice and songwriting have wisdom WAY beyond her years.
Great reaction, another uplifting song, about peace and harmony that is right up your guys lane is AQUARIUS/Let THE SUNSHINE IN The song came out in the late 60s and became like a rallying cry , sung by Billy Davis and Marilyn McCoo, who some 50 years later are still happily married and still making great music. AQUARIUS will not make you cry, it will make you get up and move.
I LOVE this song...it's like the ultimate love song to the underdog, and at one time or another we're all the underdog. So glad you guys got to hear and share it. This would be a good one to have your students listen to. Another great Brandi song is THE STORY, which was from a little earlier in her career. And another song of hers you should check out is called THE EYE.
FINALLY! I've been waiting for a Brandi Carlile on Female Friday. She's incredible, and she has so many fantastic songs -- "The Eye," "Most of All," and "The Mother" are my favorites.
Very emotional song! I love this! People judge others and it isn't our place to judge anyone! We should just love them for who they are!

So glad you finally got around to hearing Brandi. Her voice is so powerful. Agree with all the others who say you must also listen to The Story.
I swear I watch her Grammy performance of this song at least once a week. What an emotional powerhouse.
Great choice! I was going to recommend that, too! Aquarius/Let the Sun Shine in. 5th Dimension!
Such an amazing voice
I've got to find what else this amazing woman sings
I LOVE this song...it's like the ultimate love song to the underdog, and at one time or another we're all the underdog. So glad you guys got to hear and share it. This would be a good one to have your students listen to. Another great Brandi song is THE STORY, which was from a little earlier in her career. And another song of hers you should check out is called THE EYE.
The Eye is amazing.
FINALLY! I've been waiting for a Brandi Carlile on Female Friday. She's incredible, and she has so many fantastic songs -- "The Eye," "Most of All," and "The Mother" are my favorites.
