Johnette should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame period.

i agree they created iconic music that should be in the hall of fame. however...the band (specifically Johnette) was so anti record label and music industry, that they burned a lot of bridges. they fought the music business every step of their career, and left them without a label and broke in the end. had they had a stronger manager I feel they would have lasted to this day.

The lead singer is the great Johnette Napolitano. She's a powerhouse, but her voice also has a dark, almost sinister quality to it. Next Stops:

So many songs to mention but I have also have to say Little Conversations and definitely Mexican Moon and Bajo La Lune Mexicana (Spanish Version - Same Song) back to back.

What I love about this song, is that it's from the perspective of someone who is essentially the 'victim' of his addiction - but she's pleading with him.
It hits home with me - because I've been the person pleading. I set my ego aside and begged my ex-wife to get better - to do it for us and the kids - but she didn't. It gutted me. I feel the singer's pain.
It took years - and a divorce - but she's 14 years sober now. Our marriage didn't survive - but she's reconnected with our kids. We're all happy now - but back then ......agonizing.

I won't lie, when I first heard this song as a teen, I loved the sound of her voice and the sound of the song but I didn't really process the lyrics. Same with Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car." I could sing the hook and a few choice lines but if you asked me what the song was about afterward, I'd be like, "Uhh.... hm." As an adult, re-experiencing some of these songs with Jay and Amber and y'all, now *I'm* sitting home alone and crying.
Actually, Pink Floyd's "Time" did the same thing to me as well. As a teen, I thought it was a cool sounding song. As an adult, it's heartbreaking.

I was a serious alcoholic, and likely would be dead were it not for my fiancé standing by me; helping me get past my problems and giving me something to look forward to. I am the man I am today because of her. I know that there were several times that she should have left me, and although I never physically hurt her, I was the reason that she cried way more than once. I owe her my life and will forever be indebted to her.

The singer/ bass player is Johnette Napolitano, and yes, her husky voice is intoxicating. This was a project she started in the mid 80s with guitar player Jim Mankey, who had been in a cultish LA band called Sparks in the early 70s. This album (1990's "Bloodletting") is an absolute masterpiece. And I know Halloween is over, but the title track to this album is a creepy, gothic thing of beauty.
I was 18 when this came out, and knew a couple of people who were engaging in self-destructive behavior not unlike this; as a result, this hit hard.
You may not be ready to re-visit this topic again just yet, but "She Talks To Angels" by The Black Crowes kind of explores this same theme (it came out the same year, too).

In 1982 when I live in the San Fernando Valley in CA some friends introduced me to someone that sang and had a band. Back then every one had a band, right? So I did not think much about it until I met Johnette Napolitano, the singer in this band. Yes, incredible voice. She told me at the time they described her voice as something between Ann Wilson of Heart and Cher. I used to visit this couple, Johnette and Jim Mankey were Concrete Blonde, quite frequently when they were renting a house in the Valley. Probably visited them too much. But they were very nice about it. Johnette is a great conversationalist and I had recently broke up with my GF so she was great to talk to. I think they thought I may have had amourous ambitions toward Johnette, which was not the case. In any event, they moved to Hollywood and never looked back. I am surprised Johnette has not commented on other reactors. I would not be surprised to see her show up in the comments section somewhere. She has strong opinions and is not afraid to express them. She is also very socially conscious, politically progressive and does speak out. Extremely gifted and talented person that I had the privilege to meet and interact with as a friend back then.

Yes, probably their best known, but far from the best, and far less an example of how haunting Johnette's voice truly is. The first time I heard "Tomorrow Wendy" I was driving north on the 405 leaving the Valley, ironically, under a "Cold an gray November sky...". It took a minute, I drove a couple more miles, and it hit me like a ton of bricks. I had to pull off at San Fernando Road and sobbed like a baby for half an hour. It brought back the memory of my Mom the day JFK was killed, sitting on the floor with her knees pulled to her chest, weeping. That, along with all the other images it evokes, and I'm still toast 30 years later even thinking about the song.

I had Bloodletting when I saw the CD Single for "Ghost of a Texas Ladies Man" at the store. Bought it on impulse. It had four tracks, including the title, an extended version of Bloodletting, Everybody Knows, and The Ship Song. Blew my mind. Most of the guys I hung out with at the time ended up getting that CD, and we all admitted to listening to all four songs on repeat, just to get to the final notes of The Ship Song and want to listen to the entire set again, just for those final notes. And the song Ghost of a Texas Ladies Man showcases Johnette's ability to sing something in a different genre and not nearly so serious, while remaining true to herself. Concrete Blonde doing a country-style song? Worth checking out. :D

A few even lost their lives, sooner or later, due to this disease. They'd be doing great, working their program, and then... they were gone. I doubt that a person could write such a song without having dealt with that particular kind of darkness.
