      Bb Gd I think that a hognose is better because you have to feed Ball pythons rats, and a lot of them refuse frozen so they’ll only eat live rats

    • @stine4132
      @stine4132 5 лет назад +3

      @Bb Gd having owned both i can say that getting a captive bred ball python to eat dead feed is quite easy. The only problem is that (now ive only seen this with my ball python) it will refuse any defrosted animal. However ones you dispatch yourself it will eat. Overall they're both great snakes and not too pricey. Hognoses in my opinion require a bit more maintanance habitat wise, you're also spared the accidental musking and bites when you have ball pythons

    This is like fate. I went to my local reptile specialty shop today to pick up some crickets and some other feeders. While I was waiting for the owner to go and get my feeders packed up, I saw the derpiest little Western Hognose that was crawling up to the top of the tank, and slowly falling down, over and over again. I was laughing so hard at the derp of the little guy. I personally and secretly named him, Henry. If my parents weren't afraid of snakes, I would have taken him home in a heart beat honestly. He was so cute and active.

    This video is what convinced me to get a western hognose. I’ve wanted a snake for years and recently fell in love with western hognoses.
    I was worried at first that they might be hard to take care of, but my little guy is so relaxed and handleable. He snarfs down pinky mice like a boss and only puffs up his cute little stupid face when I move very quickly right above him.
    I think I could have been lucky with the breeder I ordered from, but I can’t tell you how much I love my goofy looking shovelfaced worm-XL.
    It’s so fun to watch him dig and explore. The way he pushes aspen chips around with his snout makes me smile just thinking about it. He’s even adorable when he’s gobbling down baby mice! My girlfriend, who had no interest in snakes before I showed her pictures and videos of western hognoses (this video included) has fallen in love with our little guy and cannot get enough of him.
    As a first-time snake owner, their characteristic hissing and bluff strikes initially startled me and made me reluctant to approach or pick my guy up, but after having him for a few weeks, we have completely adjusted to each other. Now, if I approach from the side, I can grab him from his enclosure without him even puffing up his cute little squishy shovel face.
    He hasn’t tried to bite anyone yet, but I wear a pair of wool mittens whenever I pick him up to move him to his feeding tub and use hemostats-while still wearing those wool mittens-to feed him, so I think he has no association between human hands and food. Just in case, I have a eye drop bottle filled with vodka on hand, mounted in a little pocket I attached to his enclosure. Reptiles are weird, and I know there is always still a chance that he will choose to do a *BIG MONCHY* on me. I read that the smell of booze startles them, making them realize they are not currently doing that big munch on food, causing them to release almost immediately after you put a drop of booze in front of their nose.
    If there are any other prospective first-time reptile owners out there, I can’t tell you how much I recommend this species. Make sure you do your research, buy proper equipment to keep them at a comfortable temperature, and get them from a breeder who you deem trustworthy. With that out of the way, you will experience the greatest and most adorable low-maintenance pet in the world!
    Another benefit of getting a western hognose that I should mention is that tons of people who were previously afraid of or creeped out by snakes fall in love with western hognoses! I can’t even tell you how many of my friends, family and acquaintances have seen pictures of my goofy little drama noodle and have said something along the lines of, “holy cow, I didn’t know that snakes could be so adorable!” (No one has actually said the phrase, “holy cow,” but I figured I would paraphrase them in a RUclips friendly manner.)
    Thank you Clint and crew for leading me to purchase my adorable little guy. Thanks to you, I have what I consider the best possible adorable and playful low-maintenance pet. Plus, now lots of people I know who were previously afraid of or disinterested in snakes are seriously considering following my lead and getting their first pet reptile.
    I’ll probably get more reptiles and other types of pets in the future, but for now, my adorable, scaly cuteness-tube has filled the pet-shaped hole in my life.

      @@fundabaker2760 Actually, it's theoretically possible to selectively breed venomous snakes to produce less venom to at least not to be lethal to humans so you can still keep beautiful types of snakes with fangs. However, we can say it's still a venomous snake since it has venom but the venom is so weak that getting bitten will only make the bite swell for a few minutes. BTW, I personally love the looks of vipers, adders, and rattlesnakes, I love those triangular heads, fangs, keeled scales, and elliptical pupils. I love these snakes so bad, someone should selectively breed now.

    I've had a Hog for years now and she's the sweetest thing, and I got lucky getting a female for $50. Females in my area usually exceed $120 for a normal "wild type", and males are pretty close in price too. They're known for being rather theatric when it comes to bluff striking though, so that was initially why I'd thought you'd lowered their score, and obviously I have a few disagreements with your score, but Hognoses are my favorite type of snake hands down

    • @mayebeline1149

      Bluff striking doesn't drop the score because it does nothing. It doesn't alter your ability to handle them at all. It should increase the score because bluff striking is infinitely better than real striking.

    I got my hognose yesterday at our biggest annual expo in SA. I've spent so much time just admiring how wonderful and cute they are. I had a king snake at one point - which left after my 'ex-orcism'. As a tarantula enthusiast, it is such a wonderful snake to have, so happy to be back again!!!!! Thanks for the great and informative video!!! Subbed!

    Hi Clint! Wanted to thank you so much for this video!! It was this video in particular that led me to wanting a hognose and I began searching for breeders on social media. I came across Jeff from JMG Reptile on Instagram and now not only do I have 7 wonderful hoggies but we've been dating for about 8 months and spend every day working with them together!! So thank you for leading me to these wonderful critters and a wonderful person. It has completely changed my life!!:)

    Clint, I wanted to say thank you. This video, paired with your "Best Small Pets" segment on them, were what helped me sell my wife on picking up our new little male western hognose, Samwise. She named him (a sure sign that she's already a bit in love), which is good, because I've owned a gargoyle gecko for 9 years whose name is still Gecko... Anyway, thanks for the information, and especially for your enthusiasm!

    We get wild hognoses where I live. They are amazing and they are super hilarious when they play dead. They are drama queens! I don't harass them to make them do this. They usually puff up and play dead when I try to relocate them if they are in the way.

      Enki Snek true, but it’s better then being scared (and not harmed) then being ran over or killed. Imo you can interact with wildlife without harassing it. Eg: dont go to a animals nest and harass them.

      I've got corns, kings and a hognose. Tbh for me, corns are very timid and easily scared. Kings have attitude, but are alot braver than corns so taking them out of their vivs can be easier. And the hognose (I've had her a day) she isn't scared at all, she hissed at the guy in the shop but she loved slithering around on the bed and wanted to be handled. (Kept slithering towards my hands and up my arms etc)

    Wonderful video. Thanks for the info. As a kid, I had a Western Hog and she was wonderful. (I might have tricked a few of my friends by telling them she was a Rattlesnake, because they were somewhat common where we lived. They did not know enough about snakes to tell she wasn't. The coloring and markings were enough to convince them she was a Rattler.
    The Trick??? I would casually reach in and grab her while they nearly lost their minds. The best was when my snake was grumpy and she would hiss and strike at me, like she was playing along. An adult friend of my father ran screaming from my room! I still miss that wonderful girl)

    I consider them the best colubrids. All colubrids are cool, but some are just too fast to really interact with. These guys are nice and slow, and you don't have to worry about them darting away from your hand and escaping. Since they're somewhat fossorial you don't need to worry about them escaping nearly as much as other snakes. They're like tiny reticulated Pythons, but cuter

    "They have a venomous bite though"
    I'M SORRY WHAT?!

    • @dumbsterdives
      @dumbsterdives 4 года назад +21

      Yeah it sounds bad on paper, but its venomous in the loosest way possible, its basically just stronger saliva for breaking stuff down, doesnt really get into you unless you let them chew on you since theyre rear fanged, and is basically only as potent as a bee sting, so they arent usually classed as properly venomous. though, it can also affect people differently same as a bee sting, so allergic reactions are a possibility.

    • @e1357
      @e1357 4 года назад +7

      garters are also venomous, thing is, they and hognose snakes basically only use their venom to further subdue prey as they eat, as their venoms are weak and their delivery methods are reliant on relatively small teeth towards the back of their mouths
