I live in SEA where King Cobras are part of the local species here. About 7 years ago, when i was working for an NGO where their hq was in a retreat center in the middle of the jungle, we had a lot of encounters with snakes at the beginning because we didn't really know how to snake proof our buildings. Because everyone was from the city, it scared a lot of us... even wild boars and big insects scared a lot of us coz we weren't used to being in this type of environment. So the company hired a snake expert to teach us about venomous, mildly venomous and non venomous snakes. He was a snake specialist for the fire brigade and if there were any cases of snakes entering people's homes, he would be the first to be called nationwide. So during that training session, he brought a lot of different species of local snakes to educate us, along with it he brought 3 of his fully grown King Cobras. What he mentioned was, while it's definitely a no for regular people like us to handle king cobras, but for a professional like him who need to respond to emergencies, he prefers to handle king cobras compared to a normal cobra. Since king cobras has a better temperament, especially if it's a huge one. Cobras however, are more dangerous since they are strike happy. He even had one cobra puncture it's own lower jaw in attempt to bite him to escape capture. I did ask him if he is ever scared of having to handle these venomous snakes, but he said no, because he is always ready to die every day to save people's lives. Unfortunately, i found out through the newspapers that he passed away from a snake bite about 3 years ago. Since he is quite famous in the country, his death was reported in the local newspaper. He was bitten by a cobra that he was trying to extract out of someone's home during an emergency call. It was really sad a great loss to us, he have saved countless of people from potentially dying from venomous snakes in their homes. May he rest in peace. It's just like what you mentioned... if you handle these snakes enough times, it's just a matter of time before you get bitten by one.
Was so confused at the start of the video when you were just chilling with a King Cobra. I was thinking Clint is responsible how could you do this! Glad it all made sense in the end. Great video, such incredible snakes.
Lilith is such a sharp creature. Her awareness and reaction time is nuts. Probably why she did ok in the wild. She was always a few steps ahead of everything around her.
I like it. Here is why you REALLY shouldn't try to keep one as a pet. But if you insist on doing something really dumb, here is how to stay as safe as possible. And that is important because "just say no" doesn't work.

Otis is doing a _terrible_ job of demonstrating why it's a horrible idea to own a King Cobra. He's an absolute _angel!_ 😇😂 He is gorgeous though, and so is Lilith!
I just watched a video where right before he met Otis he was told that he had just bit a guy really good for no apparent reason and even without the glands the guy had pretty rough reaction. Why tell that right before you hand him over hah
I’ve had my corn snake for around three years now, I have a feeling her growth was stunted since she spent the first two years of her life at a Petsmart.
When Clint said "I'm not sassing you, I am so sorry" I laughed so hard I nearly cried. Venom glands removed or not I don't think I could sit with that King right in front of me and carry any type of understandable conversation whatsoever. You're a bigger man than I am, Clint!
He wasn't afraid because Otis/Odis has been de-venomed. He's so friggin docile. I thought that he had died on the table. By the way, King Cobras should neverrr be anyone's pet. Periodt.
I love how chilled out Otis was in this whole thing, he just kinda side-eyed the camera like "Hey, what's up, how are y'all doing?" during most of the video
Clint keeps talking about how Lilith is the coolest cobra but I think it's Otis. He looks like if a hyper realistic pencil drawing came to life. He even has sketch lines on his sides. He's so cool!
i totally agree. i kept thinking, "dragon!" that, and that personality! he is NOT the snake to make the case against keeping cobras. lilith, on the other hand, fucking beautiful! but no. fucking. way!
@@ashenbreese I think it's honestly cool to see a snake like Otis representing King Cobras here. For someone who doesn't like or know a lot about reptiles they get a chance to see just how different captive vs wild bred temperaments can be, as well as the importance of socializing first hand (for snake's that, you know, won't kill you for a single mistake)
Well Clint has better understanding as to why Lilith is so special, and it gives him a deeper respect for her, and I'm with him! She's a true rarity, and one of only two known leucistic king Cobras! Anyone who knows just how incredible lilith is also knows just how truly special that is! But yes, Otis is pretty amazing too and very laid back.
When I saw you wouldn't even touch the Rattlesnake, but were petting a King Cobra in this video, I knew he had to be devenomated. I didn't realise it'd be surgical though. Snake Discovery just did a video where they visited a fascility that collects venom, and they have a snake who someone attempted to perform that surgery on her, caused her immense amount of pain and failed. Glad Otis has a safe home at NERD either way, and you too were safe handling such an awesome creature. And Lilith is just blowing my mind with how beautiful she is.
Which is why venomnoid animals are cruel. If you can't handle the animal for what it is, you shouldn't own one at all. I can't speak on Kevin's experience with the king in this video(venomnoid one) but in general, it is very cruel to do that to an animal. These snakes require venom for more than just defense.
Kings rely entirely on eyesight rather than rattlesnakes using their heat pits to read out heat signatures. There's a great reason he didn't handle the rattlesnake over a king or a cobra
Rest in peace Lilith. You were a truly awe inspiring animal. Pound for pound one of the fiercest creatures on earth. My heart goes out to NERD and you Clint aswell. Love and Prayers

@@rowanheart8122 actually I heard alligator snapping turtles are more aggressive than common snapping turtles all I know is that I wouldn’t want to find out
I completely agree that the king cobra is not a joke to handle. It perhaps belongs to the same category as the black mamba. Although it's less jumpy than smaller venomous snakes, its venom yield per bite, agility, height at which it can deliver a bite, aggression upon threats, etc are all factors to consider.
I live in Indonesia (fun fact, Lilith is from Indonesia) and king cobras are found EVERYWHERE! I’ve seen king cobras in every reptile expo i’ve been in! Worse, they’re so cheap! Baby king cobras costs 400k IDR or 25.4 USD! I asked them where they got them and almost all of them are wild caught, while several were found in homes (a few months ago in Jakarta, the capital city, a lot of king cobras have been found lurking around randomly). I asked to the seller on why the prices for the baby cobras are so cheap, their answer was because that no one wanted to have cobras (wanna ask them why they took them from the wild the first place 🤦♀️)
What a bunch of idiots. "hey why you selling dirt for 4 cents a cup?" "cause no one wants to buy it" "...oh." Yanno? Why even sell it. The king cobras showing up in Jakarta is probably due to people like this
Yeah, I remember 15-20 years ago the faunaclassified forums were filled with ads of "venomoid" snakes. Always hurt me. It appears Otis is surviving ok but these animals have venom for a reason...it's part of the digestive process. It's lie humans trying to eat a burger with almost no saliva...it can be done but is not how we were meant to do it. Also, you have no idea how good of an operation is was. Nature is very good at repairing injured body parts..who's to say that the surgery got the entire venom gland to where the snake cannot produce any venom.
I can't even imagine how powerless he feels, it's like declawing a cat, or de barking a dog, it's part of who and what they are, it's how they defend themselves, imagine how he felt when he tried to use his venom but he couldn't anymore
@@ChronicaErys I mean, maybe? We don't really know what a snake thinks, and it's not like Otis needs to hunt for his food where he might notice that it's not dying like it should when he bites it. And he's still being handled with respect and very socialized, so he might not feel threatened at all around these people. Tbh, at his size, I'm not sure he'd often feel powerless. That is a huuuuge snake. The size alone might compensate for the lack of venom.
@@TheYasmineFlower Well house cats don't need to hunt either, but de-clawing them heavily affects the cats negativity, so it only makes sense that the same thing would happen with venomous snakes

@@ClintsReptiles Whoops, thats what I meant. We have an albino king cobra, he's huge. I love how you’re usually super upbeat in your videos but you get very serious when talking about the dangers of handling a cobra. I love how you still love all these animals though. Keep up the great work!
Victoria Stupidity in owning animals is relative. Some dog breeds may as well be considered bears and were used to hunt them and there are some shrimps in captivity that can “punch” through aquarium glass, nobody really minds these. Snakes don’t need to be handled much and you can pretty much own a cobra without ever touching it provided you have the right tools. It’s when it escapes that there’s a real problem, that has happened near my city before and had the county on a look out for a single snake.
My question would be whether Lilith survived due to her disposition or whether she adapted her disposition in response to being attacked so often (as I presume she was). It might be some of both, but I wonder how much of each, given how intelligent King Cobras apparently are.
She had also been handled roughly by her initial captors for quite some time. There are videos out there of the man in Indonesia who originally captured her, and he's free handling her without any issues. Some time between that video and when Kevin was able to acquire her, her attitude and disposition became severely soured. She has a violent hatred for shoes, which may give you some indication of how she had been treated. It's good to know that she'll live out the rest of her days in the gentle loving hands of a keeper as amazing as Kevin McCurley!
Idk how she managed to survive being a baby with that color. I can understand how later on she could. The scenario I can think of is that she found an area with white rocks and just stayed there till she got big enough that it did not matter. But I can only think of types of sandstone that would have that color. And sandstone weathers extremely fast in any of the extremely wet places that King Cobras live.
The leucistic cobra is one of the most beautiful creatures in the world. Like it's carved from a pale stone, with obsidian for eyes. Truly a marvel of nature.
Is it weird that I got defensive when I found out people were calling Clint an idiot for handling the false water cobra? 😅 If you wanna call someone an idiot over something, it’s usually recommended that you actually know something about it.
Very well said! It's why Clint had to actually remind people that the false water cobra has false in it's name because it's a false cobra, not that the water is false! Haha. People are amazingly ignorant
I think that shows more of a problem with you then with them; if you find yourself feeling any personal attachment to a person you have absolutely zero connection too; and start getting defensive on their behalf, that’s when you start becoming unhealthy. There’s zero reason for you to feel like this; and people who aren’t educated about snakes are allowed to make any instinctive reaction they want. In fact to assume that they should know automatically what a false water cobra is, when to the layman they look EXACTLY the same is actually pretty stupid of you lmfao. So how about you let the grown man, who has decided to do this as a living, in the public eye, defend himself; which he did in this video, see? Doesn’t need your help lmfao
The take away for me is if you want a cobra get a false water cobra; nowhere near as bad-tempered and only mildly venomous, and still does a pretty good imitation of the cobra hood to.
I feel like the biggest question for anyone who wants an exotic pet is, “how far are you willing to test the raw power of a creature that is programmed to protect itself from predators or possibly eat you?”
The keyword is Cobra. If your average man heard the name cobra, they will assumed it's the venomous one that can kill you. Not many people knows the many variant of cobra aside from those keeps reptile as pet. Also, comparing a hammer shark to a hammer is way too off. Come on!
Otis just doesn't seem to care much of anything. he's old, he knows it's not worth the hassle lmao. also the venom gland removal probably wasn't great for him.
@@atherisGAY It wasn't based on his care, as all of these beauties are very much loved! It was only an interpretation of his behavior. It is rare to see a venomous snake so at ease. He may be a rarity, personality wise OR it could be an indication of health issues! A chill attitude can be more common in those bred in captivity. But if caught in the wild, then living in captivity, lack of defensive behavior can indicate a poor mental state as well. Many apex predators live much longer lives in captivity. But at what cost to their physical and mental health? I'm not saying they should not be enjoyed as pets, either. But making sure your pet's needs, both mentally and physically can ensure not only a LONG life, but an ENJOYED life as well.
Kevin & Clint are my all time favorite reptile youtubers! Kevin has got to be one of the bravest, craziest people I have ever seen. But he definitely knows more about handling snakes than anyone else I have ever seen.
The deadpan humour in this video is tremendous. "Where does one go to get a regular supply of frozen snakes? It's not even something I want to get. It'd bum me out." 😂 Absolutely fascinating though, keep up the good work.
That King Cobra is so docile right there. That is crazy, whenever i see people handle them they are ready to strike no matter who they are. Still in disbelief they were able to handle him like that.
He is docile because they extracted his venom glands which is like doing a Lobotomy on the Cobra. It takes away his spirit and aggressive nature. A horrible thing to do to a snake. Or any animal for that matter. Why would they pick this Cobra to do a demonstration video? Out of fear I suspect.
@@MichaelGiordano777 It was explained right in the video. Taking out the venom glands doesn't "take away his spirit". He's docile because the removal of his venom glands meant it was safe to actually handle him to the extent required for him to become used to that kind of handling.

1.6/5 score suggests it's just below-average. Which hints at a problem with the scoring system... weighing all factors equal in an arythmetic mean (=add up scores then divide by 5) or even a weighted average (=add up each score times its particular factor, then divide by the sum of those factors). Geometric mean (multiply the scores then take 5th root) would sort this out: having a zero in any category gives you an end result of zero! Seems reasonable here!

Otis seems pretty calm, though I'm sure part of it is being well fed. My grandfather used to talk about the island campaign in WW2. Walking down a trail in the jungle and seeing something moving. Looking at it and realizing it's a cobras head 6 feet in the air.
Thank you so much for talking about this intelligently and in depth. I'm so sick of people just being like "wild animal bad! House animal same size good!" It's not helping anybody. We need more real educational resources like this explaining the details of exactly WHY something is likely a bad idea.
Otis is so calm and docile that at first I thought he was a very realistic life sized replica lmao.... I've never seen one stay so still for so long. They are generally always so alert when I visit the ones near me at the reptile sanctuary.
I had a FWC for many years. He was the most gentle and handleable snake I have ever had. I would take him to reptile shows wrapped around my neck and petting his head. Freaked me out to see Otis being handled like that until it was mentioned that he had had his venom glands removed. He’s such a chill snake
He probably acts chill because he wonders what else they would remove if he acts up.
Stupidity in owning animals is relative.
A great chicken or the egg question.
I was wondering the same thing, that maybe it was a survival behavior.
Angel, I would like to see that video!

Very well said! It's why Clint had to actually remind people that the false water cobra has false in it's name because it's a false cobra, not that the water is false! Haha. People are amazingly ignorant
BUUUURN !
Might be my favorite snake species.

@@americangirl6654 funny I see this now. Literally had the snake catcher come around today to remove a snake from the house. It was only a yellow bellied black snake (they eat frogs). The last time the catcher came over it was for a coastal Taipan which was a bit of a surprise... 3rd most venemous snake in the world. Catcher was really excited, made her day
@@sevenshadesofsmooth i would be excited too that is a once in a life time opportunity, though i would prefer the more docile Inland Taipan sure it is more deadly but at least it is less aggressive than a coastal one
Although, the most common venomous snake bite here in Australia is the eastern brown snake, which is well known for delivering dry bites as a warning, so hospitals generally won't give you anti venom until you show symptoms of envenomation :)
I love that Lillith has her own ratings. 😂 She really is amazing.
