I'm terrified of snakes but the more I watch them the more I think they're chill and cute. Although I can't have one. My mom is terrified of them ever since the farm incident. Basically a snake got in a family members bed and she cant get rid of the image. I really want one. But thanks for showing me snakes aren't as scary as the stereotype there given

A garter snake is your best bet if you want to feed a snake other things. They can eat big insects, slugs, worms, fish..

Yeah I was wondering about that, aren't bites (of any animal, including humans) supposed to be potentially quite dangerous? Especially the sharp-pointed teeth of a snake can surely bring pathogens deeply into your skin/muscles and needs to be checked on professionally, maybe refreshing your tetanus shot? Not to mention structural damage to your hands (tendons, fingers...) that should be checked out, it's not always obvious and can mess you up long-term.
Maybe I'm overly cautious and you really only need to check the wounds regularly so you can get medical help if you notice an inflammation or even necrosis. And maybe it's also the US health system at play, if you're an animal handler you're not going to spend hundreds of dollars at the ER to get each bite wound checked out, whereas I'm definitely going to go to my primary care physician the next day just to be safe. Also having the additional luxury of flexible time at work, which is admittedly making things a lot easier.
Oh well, just found it a bit dangerous to tell people "just put a band-aid on it and forget it" ;)
@@sourcererseven3858 I've been bit by garter snakes, and from anecdotal experience Clint's probably right. Their venom has anti-blood coagulants meaning it'll bleed more than you expect, but apart from that snakes have much different biology from humans and can't transfer many diseases. Putting a band-aid on it is a great solution, preventing blood loss and keeping out pathogens from other sources. Dog and cat bites are FAR more dangerous than non-venomous snakebites due to the amount of bacteria they can pass over. I wouldn't worry about it unless you start noticing complications the day after tbh.
@@sourcererseven3858 While typically yes, pathogens are a concern with wild snake bites. If properly kept, fed, and maintained snake in captivity should not be a major carrier of diesease. Feed stock mice and rodents have to meet the same criteria for feed as any other as one that is contaminated could seriously harm the animal eating it. As with any bite, yes, you should watch it, but you shouldn't be overly concerned with it. Treat it like you would any other open wound/puncture wound. Antibiotic cream, a little bit of alcohol, and it should't cause major issues.

My sister has become rather fond of garter snakes, I'm sure she'd be quite happy to see that someone agrees with her on how gorgeous they are.

I've also kinda come to a resolve that I'm more of a lizard person, at least as far as what I consider better pets for me. Garter snakes hold a special little place in my heart though, they're one of the few reptiles I've been able to see in the wild where I live, and when my grandparents lived in the house they lived in previously I had always thought it was really cool how there were garter snakes living under the deck and in the garden. I remember at least a few times where I would look in this area that had these sort of small shrubby bush things, I couldn't go in after them because the plants were dense, but a watering hose was visible most of the time, and it was always fun to try and spot a garter snake in an open spot, probably sunbathing, looking conveniently like another hose, until they'd startle and dart off.
But they aren't even venomous

thats a good idea that way you and your son will be used to a "hissier" snake. plenty of time to get everything sorted for May. wish I could go to repticon or another type of reptile expo however they're not very common in England :(

This is my first Clint video. I’m 30 seconds in and I love him. His enthusiasm is THE. BEST.
I had all of the list, my absolute fav - Kenyan Sand Boa. So pretty, so nice, so smart. That bizzare face is so adorable and my female never actually bit me, despite I was picking her up without any hook or stuff. She was a terrible fast striking hunter, swallowing much larger prey that you would ever believe may fit into that tiny, funny head, but she always recognized my hand and used to climb on willingly. She was SUCH a sweetheart and such a beauty. Plus, their scales fits so amazingly, the snake feels unbeliveable soft and velvet.
I'm getting a Kenyan Sand Boa in 2024! I might get one at the expo in February or closer to the summer. Do you have any advice about snakes or KSB's specifically?
@@gendernotfound1994 Good pick, they're adorable ;) I can share few tips from own experience - They're shy on beginning, because they're typically burrowing specie, they might stay completely covered by sand for 99% of time, so don't feel discouraged. You can see though adorable nose and eyes sticking from the sand & you'll see spectacular attack on the prey from under the sand. My advice is that - don't stress them out by pulling off sand for first few weeks, they'll slowly get used to your presence and associate with no danger. Pick gently and they'll love the warmth of your hands (they like heat spots even more than most snakes). And about the feeding - they would also eat as burrowing hunters, so best option to feed them (with dead prey) is to not pull out the snake, but gently mess the sand close to their head with the mouse/pinky held with tweezers. KSB attack when prey is close and they literally "jump out" from the sand very fast, grab the pray and often pull it partially under the sand. They also put much time into "suffocating" the prey and getting sure it's dead, only then they start consuming eventually. Tiny SB I was feeding with pinky and when she was older & bigger, I fed with adult size mouse.

D1MO ABZ honsetly I can only see it as our ansectors were kind of stand offish or spokes by snakes because of the venomous ones killing them in there village so it is a subconscious thing we inheratied most likely especially if they aren't around snakes! but I've always been around snakes and I ain't scared of them long as I no there not poisonous like a water mocasin something like that
Jacob Guy that's a valid point but in my experience it's the complete opposite! My dad grew up in Spain where there are many snakes and he hates them. I grew up in Scotland and only see them in zoos yet I love them lol

D1MO ABZ Honestly I think it just comes down to the individual person and their preference. Some people are scared of them because they don't know about them. Others might still find them creepy even after being educated. But there is no proof that it's "a natural instinct". I've met people who were equally scared of dogs and cats, and even rabbits. People can be afraid of anything, either way it's a phobia which is irrational fear.

I’m new to this channel but honestly I can tell if you keep this up one day you’ll have hundreds of thousands of subscribers, your personality is fantastic and your passion is amazing, keep up the grand work. One thing I’d like to see is a video showing exactly what “misting” is, I’ve heard a lot about it for geckos and chameleons but I still have no clue what it is and how it’s performed, a simple demonstration would be fantastic :)

Wow I used to be moderately of scared/grossed out by snakes but now I'm really thinking about getting a sand boa those things are awesome! I love your videos theyre really educational and make me less afraid and more interested in these more exotic types of pets, even the vinegaroon which initially I couldnt even look at.

The hognose snakes are my favourite snakes. They don’t grow too big and they are just adorable. Their eating technique is better because I have been bitten by a corn snake where he missed the food while striking. Also, like you said they are very calm and unlikely to bite I think it would be the perfect snake for me. Luckily I’m getting one for my 12th birthday and I honestly can’t wait! Thanks a lot for the vid! :D

Yeah I've been trying for 3 years and my mom's like NEVER IN MY HOUSE.( I love her either way though.) I tried explaining to her that if I were to get 2 anaconda morph western hognoses and bred them, I would get a eggs a great amount of eggs in a clutch and could make a truckload of money doing it( Not that that would be the only reason 'cause it definitely isn't). I've tried to persuade her in almost every way but unfortunately, some people are just very stubborn. ;) (incuding me....)

Garter snakes are so underrated! Mine is such a cool little dude. Always a bit of a spazz when I first grab him, but he calms down super quick and it’s so fun to watch him zoom around his enclosure. He’s captive bred, never musked on me. Just such a fun little dude who loves to explore and eat.

I love watching your enthusiasm about all the reptiles you handle. You always look like you're having a great time, even when handling King Cobras like the beautiful Lilith!
It does surprise me every time kingsnakes are described as anything besides chill and affectionate. My almost 20 yo Cali King loves to snuggle on me under his favorite soft blanket while I pet him, especially his neck. If I stop before he's ready he puts his head in my hand and rubs against it. The only time I've been nipped was once when my hand was in the way of his food. He does like to explore/hunt when it's time for a meal so I make tunnels on the sofa with blankets or play with paper towels rolls or other kinds of tubes before it's time for his meal. I also switch out the enrichment in his enclosure fairly frequently to give him something to think about. I find him interactive and fun.
Over 25 years years ago my ex husband and I rescued a female Garter Snake that a group of kids were whipping around by the tail and throwing the poor thing at each other. At first we thought it was a fake rubber snake until we saw her trying to escape. I was heartbroken by their cruel behaviour. Even my ex, who was not a snake fan (at that time), felt sorry for her and gave me the nod to go to her rescue. We fed her, fattened her up, and a few weeks later she surprised us with a baker's dozen adorable tiny replicas of herself. Long story short, it was a happy ending for mama and babies as they all were released back to where they belonged. Babies first, mom a month later due to her poor condition when we first rescued her. We were kind of sad to see her go as she'd been such a gentle snake. She never struck at us or did the whole yucky musk business. She was a wonderful introduction to reptiles for our then toddlers. To this day my adult sons and I keep snakes, Corns and Balls, hopefully soon a baby Hognose. I have a darling Corn Snake named Gus who is turning 21 this year. I got him as a baby when he was so small he could barely eat day old pinkies. I'm going to ask my daughter if I can be the cool Grandma and allow me get my first grandchild a Corn Snake when he turns 5. That's a few years away, but it's a fun future plan to think about. I once kept 5 garter snakes at once when I was a kid and I still remember one of the most fun feeding frenzies was when we caught a few dozen baby toads in the nearby woods and put all 5 snakes together a big enclosure and dumped the toads in to watch the fun begin.

This was such a walk down memory lane, my first pet snake was a Garter when I was 14 and since then I've had at least one kind of each of these snakes, so this video really made me smile today. My personal faves of mine were my Hoggy (who munched my thumb and sent it numb for a few hours haha), my Colombian and Brazilian Rainbow Boa's, my Rosy Sand Boa, and my beloved corns Snoopy and Albie, but god knows I've loved each and every single one of them!
I catch wild garter snakes here in Canada, and they really are beautiful snakes I find it so sad that their underestimated.

honestly, until finding you and Emily's videos, I had no idea owning a pet garter was even an option. I thought they were just strictly a wild species since i saw them all the time in my backyard, lol. definitely on my wish list of reptiles!
I disagree that you don't have to feed garter rodents at all. Rodents have way more variety in vitamins, it's a good idea to give them a few rodents here and there.

had the same issue, I just went on about it to the point my mum let me get one just to shut me up. also showing snake abuse videos can cause your parents to see that they're just like any other animal with feelings and that helped greatly on the persuasion (although it is heartbreaking to see as an animal lover) . good luck!

I was adamant that there would be no pet snakes in my house. Then my 10 year old son (now 12) did all this research on ball pythons and talked to everyone about them. He saved up enough money for a tank, lid, hide, and snake. He came to me and I couldn't say no. I helped him buy everything else. Now we have 3 reptiles and want two more snakes added to the bunch. So... it is possible to convince those moms who fear snakes and turn them into reptile lovers. :) Show her you can be responsible. :D Good luck!

I just got my first corn snake yesterday
I've never seen or heard of a Kenyan sand boa biting. Mine is the friendliest animal I've ever handled/owned.

There are king snakes and garter snakes all over where I live, sometimes I just go out and catch them because they're everywhere

Speaking of wild snakes, we farm mice, and a rat snake or your conventional brown house snake(in the philippines) or something slithered into a pregnant mouses container through one of the breathing holes which it chewed and ate it, the workers at my dads autobody shop taunted it and it eventually puked the now dead mouse, then my dad decided to give it to my uncle who is good at reptile keeping, he has several ball pythons and they are just great snakes(they don't really get aggressive around people) also we have a larger python that is not a ball(which literally acts like those large zoo pythons that really don't get phased much by handling) also it is albino, then the workers didnt know where to put it, and left it out in the burning heat of 9:00 Philippines and it literally got heatstroke and friggin collapsed(it was so hot, had an open mouth and was very dehydrated ) however it got revived by a dousing of cold water and a forced drink of sorts, and it seems to be strangely friendly

I've never actually seen a Kenyan Sand boa bite before
I've never been bit myself, but I have seen them try, and I have watched them bite other people. It is a silly strike. My only issue is that it is hard to see it coming since it tends to come from the side.

Clint's Reptiles yeah it is funny they do like a little thrash. One of my sand boas get like this if I haven't handled her in a while or near shed, yet I had one that was so incredibly chill there, you couldn't get him to strike if you tried, and I picked up a 3rd that seems to be just as docile.
Like you said you won't see em much but once you get them out their enclosure they seem to get the most attention, bizarre is good word, sometimes even people that don't care much for snakes can't help but take some interest haha.

If you do like a snake that darts around quickly I suggest the liquorice rat snake the move like a 3 year old amped up on coffee and fruit loops

Zuno Zoo I can’t own a milk snake, corn snake, or even certain morphs of a king snake. They’re illegal in my state. Only boas and pythons are sold here. It’s stupid as Georgia has very weird laws.
Yeah its sucks where i live here too. Only ball pythons are allowed and no other exotics like leopard geckos or bearded dragons, even though is a tropical island and they’ll never survive in the wild 🤦🏻♀️ but you know what is legal.... a Toucan 🤦🏻♀️ that wont reak havoc in the enviorment if it gets out .
