The Rise & Fall of Rapture & Columbia | Complete Bioshock Timeline | Full Bioshock Lore & Timeline

- The timeline and universes of Bioshock are complicated and confusing. The story of Rapture and Andrew Ryan and the story of Booker Dewitt and the floating city of Columbia are connected in a complex interwoven story through space and time.
In this video, I have created a complete chronological timeline for Bioshock so that it easily makes sense. How are the universes connected, how do their stories end and does this timeline give any clue to where the new Bioshock will be set?
This is a compilation of the three part Bioshock timeline I posted over the last few years - with the algorithm not altering people of the new parts, I thought it would be best to put them all into one long video!

The fact that instead of just using footage from the game, you go out of your way to actually re-create the scenes and give it a cinematic angle is a level of detail that I really appreciate and that always keeps me coming back to this channel
I feel like a mix of both would make the video feel a bit smoother. But agreed for the most part.
Yee it seems like that’s gonna take awhile for one man, and it definitely was worth it dude
Couldn't agree more the videos are always brilliantly put together
I don't know man, most of the photoshops kinda suck
@@filthyferret3492 Thats like an hour and a half of fotage my guy
I do often wonder how Rapture would’ve turned out had they had access to Vigor and Salts instead of the Plasmids. While they still did cause hallucinations and some cosmetic changes to one’s arm, it was a drastic difference from the insanity and disfiguring alterations of Plasmids.
At least in writing I don’t think things would have turned out differently, the series criticises the idea of free market capitalism as inherently flawed, it would have just been another drug or something else that would have brought down the order of the Rapture.
In Burial At Sea 2 its explained that Plasmids, Big daddies, Vigors and Songbirds were made by Fink and Suchong. They comunicated via the portals. 1 single Vigor costed 10 times more Adam to make compared to a Plasmid. Thats why very few people use Vigors in Columbia but everyone used Plasmids in Rapture. Plasmids in Rapture were "more affordable". Also, most people in Columbia didnt really like Vigors, probably due to their religious mindset. The obvious flaw with the Lore is that when you visit Fink's Building, you see a ton of Vigors being made, wich is counter intuitive when you look up the reason why Lil sisters and daddies were made in the first place. They were made because there wasnt enough adam and they needed to harvest it from the dead bodies. Unless Fink got his own Adam from other universes and not from Ryan/Suchong/Rapture.
Remember that Slate also overdosed on Shock Jockey vigor bottles and it didn't do his health any good.
Repeated use of adem accelerated the uses changes like a adict where as the vigor and salts did not require adem to aquire the abilities but it would have the same affect as adem where the population becomes soo addicted it would have the same effect as rapture its a never ending cycle
Could be the extreme pressure differential could affect what Adam/Vigor does to people
I don’t care if I’ve seen all three of these videos almost 100 times, this completed timeline was very enjoyable. Sorry that part 2 and 3 got low views, you worked so hard on them.
Didn't know there was a part 2 and 3, only just found this one, I'll be listening and liking them 👍
are all the other parts just this one but split? all of them together create this full version, right? i wont miss anything if i dont watch them, will i?
I will never forget the punch of the infinite ending. Unraveling that story and all the little touches was incredible.
Only game that's ever given me actual goosebumps
Theres themes and elements in infinite that lived experiences unlock greater understandings and appreciations for the game.
The amount of highly convoluted and incredibly complex material put into such simple and understandable form is truly astonishing. I think, this is the only video that actually succeded to give me more information than simply reading wiki did. Incredible effort, my brother in Christ, you did good.
Thank you. That's too kind! It was tough but when I got my head around it, it was a great story to tell!
The way that the Rapture theme blends into Lighter than Air at 6:20 while explaining how Fink co-opted Suchong's discoveries in his own universe is absolutely sublime
I always thought there should be a third. Bioshock Exhumed. A 1970s government agent investigating an illegal radio station in Arizona. A water tower on the bluff above a ghost town. A staircase leading down.
That's cool af, you should write a detailed summary and post it, maybe it'll actually get picked up, you never know
@@annaschneider225agreed, this guy is deffo onto something. And if he doesn’t expand, i might go ahead and give a try.
Out of all timeline videos on bioshock, this one is the most enjoyable I’ve found
I’m glad I was recommended this video, keep up the terrific work!
Thank you! The algorithm hasn't been too kind to it, but I'm glad you like it!
Holy crap this is so much deeper than I ever realized. I knew certain things were connected by design, such as big daddies and songbird, but them being connected through storyline is something I have missed for years.
Everything is connected. It's what I loved about the Bioshock series. Nearly everything has meaning.
@@Skyrionn that makes it more amazing to me now too. Excellent writing. I knew my yearly revisit of the series was done for some reason.
If you didn't play BAS dlc for Infinite, then you wouldn't have known Rapture and Columbia were connected.
Haven't been able to fully experience/play these games due to motion sickness, so this story breakdown, showing all the connections and details, is simply amazing! Thank you :)
I'm glad I could help in some way!
Me too!!!
I’ve got the same problem, I really don’t know why Bioshock gives me such intense motion sickness.
@@justanotheryoutubechannel I get motion sickness with all first-person games, Bioshock was the first one I played and where I had to realise that. Though it was still doable in small portions. Bioshock Infinite though, with everything around you floating up and down, was too much even in small portions.
But maybe there are other factors that make it worse, only ever tried one other first-person game and there I didn't last for more than 5min :D
The original Bioshock has a rather small fov the remastered however was playable with a wider fov
You just made me appreciate bioshock infinite so much more and I played this game years ago. This video was amazing, great work and thank you!
As someone who suffers pretty severe motion sickness & migraines with first person games, I’ve lamented never being able to play the Bioshock games. This video, in addition to being extremely well put together, finally allowed me to experience the games and their lore in a way that reading wiki articles & watching Let’s Plays never could. Thanks for all your work on this. Really glad the algorithm sent me here.
This is a masterwork in editing and writing. Sharing it everywhere I can. You did an outstanding job, this is my third time watching it.
Wow, thank you! Thanks for the support - I really do appreciate it!
Agreed. Really good cadence and storytelling style made it great as well.
The fate of Sofia Lamb is determined by what you do with Holloway, Poole, and Alexander. Kill them all and Eleanor actually kills her own mother, believing her to be too dangerous to be left alive.
You can still kill Stanley and Eleanor will spare her mother. You can also still kill Alexander, as well - depending on which you kill switches certain dialogue - thus creating 9 different combinations of endings possible for Bioshock 2.
@@zazi5305 The nature in which Sofia Lamb lives or dies depends on how Delta treats the Little Sisters as well as those three characters. A "Rescue" ending requires Delta to kill all three if he wants to go against the grain and have Eleanor kill Sofia Lamb, otherwise she'll spare her (even if only one of the three were spared). A "Harvest" ending requires Delta to spare all three if he wants Eleanor to spare Sofia Lamb, otherwise she'll kill her.
This is one instance where I would've actually preferred to get the "bad" ending lol, I just hated Sofia so much. But I spared Grace, so Sofia got to live
@@Christopher-md7tf It's not quite bad if you still save the little sisters. You just need to kill Grace to kill Sofia if you want what I would consider the best ending.
@@RainingMetal Yes that's what I mean and why I put bad in quotes. It's weird to me that the developers present Sofia getting to live as a good thing that results out of you sparing at least one person (which Grace arguably deserves the most) when the game doesn't really present anything redeemable about Sofia's character.
I think people underestimate the importance of reality transition in "BioShock: Infinite" and the saga as a whole. Why ? You see, throught out the game, Elizabeth explains she's not sure she's bringing them to already existing realities, but rather creating universes that attend to her needs and wishes. Something that might back up her theory is Comstock's voxophone, in which he questions himself what happens to the sinner he left behind after the baptism, since water's purpose isn't to destroy, but to wash away. If we take this voxophone in a literal sense, that means that when Comstock was baptized, a paralel world was created in order to house Booker DeWitt in it (this might also explain why his death erased only Comstocks, because while Booker was washed away to new realities, Comstock was drowned). If this is true, that means Elizabeth is the embodiment of everything "BioShock" represents. How when you're unhappy with the world, you create a new place that fits your vision. The importance of a father figure in a child's life. And the child's growth throught exposure to the world's corruption. I think "BioShock: Infinite" is far deeper than most people realize. But to try and truly grasp that depth, like Elizabeth, you must decipher the codes and lockpick the forbidden areas to gain true understanding of how the game truly works. I have faith and love for this game, even if I agree Rapture is better, and you can't turn my love into hatred.
There's always an idea. There's always a flawed world. There's always a womb of water. There's always an individual who wants to find his time to create, and his time to destroy. And everything starts with a lightouse (or a sea of them).
Great comment :)
@@ruaidhri8064 thanks.
Hey, if you don't mind, I've got one question for you. Who do you think that it was who visited Comstock ? And what do you think it was her agenda ?Remember, Comstock is still Booker, simply amplified to his worst. And considering Booker's comments regarding Rapture and Columbia, it's pretty obvious Comstock could never have thought of creating Columbia alone. Someone had to give him the idea. And if we take into consideration that Rapture and Columbia are twin realities and the theories saying that Eleanor is Elizabeth reincarnated (in another time, and another place), that means whoever visited Comstock, had an agenda for Anna, and the cities were her baptism to prepare her for said agenda.
Infinite was the only game I ever played in the series, and it holds a soft spot in my heart because I sympathized with Elizabeth. It's hard to please an abusive parent, and its ever harder to escape their brainwashing. What you said about father figures was spot on. Old Elizabeth is a direct parallel to that potential of righteous evil in Booker, physically realized in Comstock.
@@JabamiLain I interpreted that as more religious propaganda. Religion is often a front for people to abuse power. The Christian Bible of today has a large amount text full of bloody and gruesome acts of conflict. Often commanded by the big G himself. So it wouldn't be hard to create a bloody society that pretends to be heaven, but really it's just hell in the sky.
Constants and variables just changing in each distinct "dimension"
Bio 1 is my favorite game of all time but when it comes to the story and its mind blowing layers of detail....infinite has a better story than bio 1. It just takes work and time to fully understand this admittedly quite convoluted, but ingenius story and all the layers to it.
I regard Ken Levine as one of the greatest story tellers of the 21th century.....in my opinion with these games he proved that he is able to hold his own amongst legends like Orwell, Huxley, and Philip K Dick
Ken Levine is truly one of the most brilliant storytellers of our time
He truly is. The new studio have a lot to live up to.
Is Levine going to continue system Shock?
@@KaosNova2 no
@@KaosNova2 I believe he's a creative director for the upcoming bioshock game.
He’s overrated, terrible leader and arrogant with inflated ego. But he’s a good storyteller
Well, we know Booker has the vision of the part where Old Elizabeth destroys New York way before he actually gets there, so maybe from the endless Lighthouse Sea, those memories bleed across each other. So if Comstock saw Old Elizabeth in a Dream bled from the "future", then he would work to achieve the "dream" he saw.
i've been a huge fan of bioshock since its start, though i could never fully understand its timeline. this video has helped me with exactly that. the realisation that everything is so neatly, yet discreetly intertwined has left me amazed. thank you Skyrionn, the algorithm has blessed me with this content
I played the three games, got hooked to the aesthetics and the complexity of the story, never got to understand it in such detail. Truely thankful to see it with your recreated perspective. If I could I would write thank you a million times. What is your favorite part of the story? I love whatever is linked with the Lutèce, showing up in the most unexpected places. They could be fixing themselves a toast in your kitchen and you would never know :)
The entirety of Bioshock 2 is my favorite!
I'm sure everyone can remember their first time playing bioshock
*one of the greatest game intros ever*
So true. So true.
An incredible intro
This is an amazingly comprehensive video and has really kept my low attention span held, thank you good sir for this amazingly informative video
Thanks so much! I'm glad you got something from this and the runtime wasn't off putting!
Mad respect to the time, effort and passion invested here. You really did cranked one out for the team, here, my guy.
It took a while but was absolutely worth it! Thanks for watching it :D
This is the best lore video for any video game !
Thank you!
I've played the game so many times and prided myself on gathering as much lore on it as I could.. But this? this was more than I ever could've surmised from it. It felt like a thrilling movie! ive subscribed and will be watching more of your quality content
This is a very comprehensive and easy to understand summary of the rather complex story across the universes of BioShock. While I played all games and searched every nook and cranny for lore, I wasn't able to piece them together in such a neat way you did.
Hats off to you and thank you for this video!
I'm replaying the entire remastered bioshock trilogy since they were free on the Epic store. This video recommendation couldn't have been more timely. If there was a franchise for a movie trilogy this would be it. You've written a great script.. Kudos.
I get chills every time I hear the slow, piano keys of “Welcome to Columbia” That intro to Bioshock: Infinite was breathtaking and the best intro of all time.
The BioShock Series, an absolute Masterpiece. Every single game is just insanely good and often brought me to tears. The characters, the stories and the music.
Does anyone remember the multiplayer in bioshock 2 and the comments your character say's if you pick up a little sister saying things like " your worth your weight in gold", I miss those games, it's a pretty that they didn't expand on those game modes
That was one of the best explanations of the storyline I've heard yet. I really enjoyed listening to the way you did so with pieces of the assets from the game. It was if I was playing the game without actually playing it if that makes sense. I look forward to seeing what else you come up with. Definitely a 10/10 in my book. Great job.
I've been a huge bioshock fan since the first one and my god, this video is perfection when explaining the lore. Lord only knows how a television show would be about the franchise
Great job discussing the whole series. The games story is great and quite a tragedy, not just another good guy vs bad guy fps story. 😊
So far all the videos I've seen of yours have been super-high quality! Def deserves more views!
That's so kind! I really appreciate it ♥
Great job ! Well done for condensing all of the Bioshock's story and timeline in a little more than one hour video ! This mustn't have been easy but it sure is fulfilling to watch
i've been waiting 10 years for someone like you to tell the storyline properly chronically, thank you so much for this
This is amazing. You really put things in perspective. Great job on this!
Glad you enjoyed it! There should be more Bioshock content to come soon!
I’m so glad I found this channel. I don’t know if you look at requests, but I recently played The Forgotten City and have been obsessed with it. If you haven’t played it yet, I highly recommend that you do. Based on the games you discuss I think you’d like it.
Welcome aboard! I'm glad you found the channel too! I did play the game but stopped playing due to too many bugs. I struggled tbh but enjoyed some of what I played.
@@Skyrionn understood. Now I’m off to watch hours of your content!
@@Mr_Case_Time Enjoy dude. I'll appreciate every second of it!
Incredibly well made! Such great detail and footage, really inspired me to play through the series again :)
This was very well made and brought back all the memories of playing it. Love it.
Time to replay it!
This was a great video that recaps nearly all the events of the entire series. I can't stress enough how much I love Bioshock.
Just redownloaded this series and accidentally sped run the game to the first little sister in 30 minutes. I still remember every little detail and where each enemy will be. Still love it!
I’ve been watching a lot of Bioshock related videos lately but wow kudos on the editing and making it so informative!
Just one of those stories regardless if it’s a movie, book, tv show or game that I envy anyone who gets to experience this masterpiece for the first time. Incredible music and the characters feel so real. It’s haunting.
Fantastic video! This must have taken a lot of work, time and patience :D
I really appreciate the editing to provide definitive visuals to go along with the Lore.
It took a while but was so worth it!
I'm so glad I found your channel (the algorithm was kind enough to suggest the Half life lore video) - I've been binging it ever since. Super grateful for this amazing content and I hope your channel keeps growing as it absolutely deserves many more subscribers.
Cheers!
Wow thank you! There's so much to come too!
Man, this just reminds me of how unsatisfying the endings of infinite and it’s DLC were compared to 1 and even 2
This was above and beyond anything I could have expected or hoped for. Very well made. And concise for a storyline that is anything but concise.
Thank you for helping me understand my childhood. I've never seen this channel before and the fact that the title said "Bioshock Timeline" made me click on it. I've always been so confused on the timeline, despite playing the others. Thanks again! This deserves a subscription!
Welcome aboard! Thanks for watching the video! If you have any suggestions for timelines, I'm happy to hear them!
came from playing bioshock infinite again and realizing i didnt really understand what was going on. this was so much more than i had ever hoped thank you so much for making this it's incredible and your hard work is very much acknowledged
Great job, I thoroughly enjoyed reliving the story in this form.
The visuals and your great storytelling left me “enraptured” the whole way through even though I’ve already played all the games. Bravo!
I see what you did there :P I appreciate the comment and thanks for watching the whole thing!
wow, really good video. I’ve played through all the series and dlc and still missed what seems like 90% of the story. Really good work here.
Not only fantastically explained but with the music and the animations it's a great listen and watch. Also filled me in with bits of lore i'd no idea about 👍
Amazing video! Great job. I really enjoyed the layout and narration.
Awesome job! Beautifully made and narrated. As a huge fan of Bioshock, this has to be the definitive explanation of the link between Columbia and Rapture.
very happy that youtube suggested me your fantastic video. Your work is outstanding and the story of all the games was such a complex one, that I kept notes on the side trying not to lose track of it all !! but I really appreciate this full story presented in perfect order with great narration and amazing (semi-animated) illustration ... it reall helps a LOT to re-experience the glory of these games with a better grasp of all the intrecate details and links ! thank you so much !
I always felt the part where there's is always a man was suppose to be interpreted as booker and Jack. There is always be a "hero" to the story where the "girl" gets saved
Keep up the amazing work! Love your channel!
This is the video of someone really in touch with the lore explaining it down in basic non-Bioshock player detail for those that don't know, like me
I love it and now I get it
This was such an amazing video, thank you so much for your work and dedication!
Thanks for watching! I appreciate it!
I just recently finished Bioshock and i thought that it would be so Great if you made lore videos about it and now i see this xD what a pleasant suprise
Came at the perfect time then!
Bioshock is my all time favorite game trilogy and I always discover something new or little hints of storytelling I missed. I saw this video on my home page on my RUclips account so I had to watch and you did amazing story telling that beats the others explaining it.
I'm glad you clicked on it. Thank you :) If you have any suggestions for future timelines, lemme know!
This video is a masterpiece in its own right. Such beautiful editing!
Definitely the best timeline video I’ve seen for this series! Great work!
Thanks for watching it. It took a lot of time but I think it was worth it
Thank you for your beautiful work! Ever video i have watched (lol currently watching everything!) is like i said in my other comments so beautiful and shows such care! I can't get over how much work you put into these! I'm so thankful I found your work during this hard time for me.
You are giving me so much ease from my own mind. Lol tmi just know I deeply appreciate you and everything you do!!! Your rock!!!
Omg i loved this so much and now want to re-play the series!
This was so well done. Thank you for what was clearly a massive effort.
It took a while but it came out much better than I though it would!
Thank you very very much for your hard work Skyrionn. Great upload! :)
This was astounding. Ive played and beaten them all so many times, but i forget certain plot points amidst the shooting and drug abuse. I appreciate your work.
Amazing video, enjoyed every second of it.
Awh thanks so much!
Yessss. More bioshock pls sir. I can't watch yet but have my like anyway
Beautiful job on this man.
Best video on the series I have seen so far, amazing!
(just finished all 3 games on the ps4 again after years...)
this is the most comprehensive videos I've ever seen about the games! Thank you!
It took so long to put together but came out right. Thanks for watching! ☺
Fantastic video. This certainly cleared up some things I was confused on in the storyline.
Glad to hear it! Thanks for stopping by!
Awesome video, well done!
Absolutely fantastic video. It feels like the puzzle is now complete, everything put together and all pieces in the place where they're supposed to be. It all makes sense to me now, where there were initially some questions left after my first playthroughs of the games.
One thing I've noticed as well is that while watching this brilliant summary, you could have never guessed that all of these games were first person shooter video games at their core. That's how rich and strong the story is that it can completely stand on its own despite being a video game that also needs to have fun gameplay mechanics. Really fascinating stuff.
Thanks for watching!
I know right. I think this is why Bioshock holds such a special place in my heart - the story was incredible and aided the gameplay.
That was really well made, congrats.
Wow this was an amazing retelling of the bio shock lore, I didn’t even know a lot of this even after watching other documentaries about the lore and playing the games a few times.
Thanks for watching. I'm glad you enjoyed the episode. I'm posting my first dedicated lore video next week. I'm thinking of going into more depth of the universe.
Great video!! Seriously I want to know how long this took to make because it's so exhaustive! Thank you!!
I really like the edit and hard work you put into while making this. 😊
Finally someone made a bioshock timeline that is both comprehensive not a 12 hours long series
This is extremely well done!
This video is just amazing. So well done!
👏 That was Impossible! Both The Rise & Fall of Rapture & Columbia with Bioshock Timeline series Past, Present and Future! That was totally amazing love your video! I chose the Impossible!
it was never my kinda game, but I really appreciate the hundreds of hours of work you put into this splicing it all together in one long form video...Thank you good Sir, and keep up the good work.
Try again !
Just found this. Skyrion, you always ha e the dopest, niche videos that just hit the lore fiend spot.
Thank you for yet another amazing video
As someone who isn’t a gamer except for a few titles here and there, my entire experience with Bioshock has been watching my roommate play it a few times. I appreciate this video and am currently on my second watch-through because it’s a fascinating story even without the gameplay and I appreciate that you aren’t interjecting unnecessary opinions and standard overrated RUclips hype. So thank you. Maybe someday I’ll actually play the game since it seems like it would keep me busy for a year.
Wow. What an amazingly well-done video! Thank you
One of the best if not the best video game breakdown i have ever seen
Just got me to subscribe. Great opening to your channel got me wishing for more bioshock games. The lore of which always intrigued me. Would be awesome to see this series have new life breathed into it. Anywho, your video was great. I hope to see more of your channel
Wow I've had this story explained to me many many times to me and my partner, but it never made sense til this. Very well done and fun to watch.
This was so fucking well done! Best and clearest explanation on Bioshock I have came across. Subscribed!
It's exactly what I was going for. I appreciate you watching and commenting!
Fucking incredible. Well done. Using own footage and not just gameplay makes this so so much better
Great work! Thoroughly enjoyed
Thank you! I'm glad you liked it
thank you for your effort, really liked it , finally understanding the full story and connection
I played these games as a kid when they released (which was an interesting choice on my dads part for letting a 12 y/o at the time play this series lol). I remembered very little of the nuances of the plot; however it sparked my love of detail oriented stories. I remember being fascinated above all else with the world building both in terms of landscape and plot, even if every story detail didn’t fully sync up in my brain.
This video gave a recap that was not only thorough, but was clearly created by someone who loves the source material and world built within this universe. The original cinematics you created were an amazing touch as well!
Thank you sincerely for bringing this to life! ❤
This was a really good deep peep into rapture. Thank you for all of your time you took making this rad ass deep dive.
