You want to know why there's so many people in jail? Because there's so many laws against victimless acts and most law enforcement officers have god complexes and feel they can do whatever they want, and they don't get punished for crimes! People regularly get thrown in jail for things like drug possession, gun possession, jaywalking, prostitution, refusal to pay taxes, mistakes on their taxes, defending themselves, protesting, running businesses without government permission, driving without licenses, etc. Politicians make up laws out the ying-yang, there's so many laws and regulations that the average person breaks several a day! Only the most hard core totalitarians think we need millions of laws and regulations!

I must give credit to Anderson Cooper for shining a light on this issue, and pay respect to Sheriff Tom Dart for explaining how glaring and obvious this issue is.
It's a huge problem, but it's not complex at all. It would be very easy to remedy this. This is one of those blatant problems we face in America that our elected officials should be working on, rather than fighting over transgender bathrooms. Which one is a bigger problem for the country? Seriously. Our elected officials are failing us by serving their own interests and not the interests of the American people. Once someone is arrested, they are a second class citizen, and their concerns are hardly considered. They're swept under the rug with the rest of the problems we don't want to acknowledge.
The silver lining is we have people like Sheriff Dart, and others like him who understand that the system is broken and people are much more than any mistake they've made. There are good people out there who understand and are working to improve the lives of all American's. God bless.

Maybe a week tops. You'll just get reinstated. I dipped for 6 months and sat for a week, got reinstated. Dipped on the same case for 4 1/2 years, turned myself in and asked for a year in the joint, knowing I'd sit for a few months and get a year parole. They hit me with west care instead. Sat for 6 months in div 3 annex, got out no probation.

there is a hyperbolic curve that determines the time to the crime and its far beyond out of appropriate range, the point of entry at the infraction-al level and time to serve is extreme, and the punishment often includes damages to personal lives that doesn't get accounted for in the scale..
salt yourself with salts if you are good (from the bible), but this is really about a system that rewards itself on the unnecessary punishments of those who have little voice to defend themselves.

they release them and they just get caught again and it happens over and over. all these prisoners are better off just leaving chicagoland after they get out.

I think a better approach at this issue would be for him to take a few of these individuals at a time to mingle with his family..let em spend a week at a time under his roof and and talk to them..listen to them..pizza and movie nights etc..i mean that would mean a whole lot to the citizens of cook county and perhaps he would stop loosing sleep over this dilemma if he knew and rest assured that some of these individuals were being cared for and given the necessary affection under his very own roof.

Talks but you really can’t trust anyone elected in Chicago, none of them get there being legitimate it’s so sad. I’ve been beaten in alleys and even handcuffed to a bench at the station by police years ago when I had a heroin problem...cook county jail is a nightmare

Sounds like a good concept but many of these people have mental health and addiction issues which makes it extremely difficult to avoid certain situations that lead to arrests and being placed in jail.
