  • People go to Rikers Island accused of breaking the law, but what's making headlines this week is the lawlessness that exists inside the notorious jail complex.
From not-so-secret fight clubs to hunger strikes and understaffing, the crisis inside Rikers is still raging.
New York Times investigative reporter Jan Ransom has been following the developments on Rikers Island closely and spoke with the PIX11 Morning News about exactly what's going on inside and why.

Kalief Browder spent three years on Rikers Island without being convicted of a crime. After he was released, he struggled with mental health, and he eventually took his own life.
May he rest in peace. He was 22 years old.

As a 24 year retired correction officer let me say this you asked why she was by herself first politics and funding, the political part is about the pay, in my state of North Carolina we were some of the lowest paid in the country thanks to the legislators and second training and staff shortages nobody wants to work in this field because it's just not worth it. What really hurts the department is the people at the top they don't listen to the officers in the trenches who work in dangerous situations like that female officer in the video and trust me the only reason she didn't get hurt was because they didn't wanna hurt her I commend her for standing her ground but she never should have been in that situation because in prison when something bad happens there's zero reaction time I'm just stunned she didn't call for backup thank goodness she walked away without getting hurt.

Yes, she should not have been by herself. As a former correctional officer and female. She had to signal to have the gate open. The female correctional officer did not signal to open the gate because the inmates would have run out the gate, which would have created a bigger situation. So, she peppered sprayed only when they appeared to attack, and then she signaled to open the gates, so that she could escape alone. That's life in prison, the norm in most prison. It's a shame. Now check this, if the gates would have been open, and the inmates would have run out, and created a more hostile environment outside those gates, the both Correctional Officers the one on the floor and the other in the control unit would have been written up and probably placed in suspension. CRAAAAZY RIGHT. Even a correctional officers escape has to be planned in safety.

The problem is three fold. First is with the way they are so badly paid who would want to be a corrections officer. I have never understood this. Increase the pay drastically, give them better conditions and you will see how quickly the position for guards fills up.Second is the facilities in the prision are bad, it probably houses more inmates than it was built for. They need to overhaul and renovate Rikers. Thirdly I my opinion to work as a corrections officer you have to have a certain kind of temperament. It's not a very pleasant job at all. It is the kind of job that attracts sadustic people. Not saying every guard is sadistic but the job does attract those kinds of people.

Many of the inmates are innocent. Awaiting court to plea there case. That's why I hate keyboard lawyers doctors and warriors who sit behind their phone screen and whack off for 18 hours of the day then spend the rest trying to tell someone else about their business. You need to be focusing on getting your nut before you bust a vein.
