  • Finally a bit of action of the disused South Wexford Railway line connecting Rosslare Strand (Located on the Dublin - Rosslare Line), with Waterford in the West. This line has now been disused for almost 11 years now with the last passenger train to travel across the line on the 18th September 2010.
Since the closure, Irish Rail have been keeping on top of essential maintenance on the line, such as weed spraying and inspection trips using the Inspection car.
In 2020, a campaign was launched to see the line reopen and is currently ongoing, from what I believe there will be a survey done to see weather or not the line would be profitable, the case has been made to the Irish Government to consider reopening the line for freight / passenger use.
I do wish the campaigners nothing but the best with their endeavors to reopen the line as converting the line into a greenway has become a real threat now.
Nevertheless, on Monday the 31st of May 2021, Irish Rail sent out their annual weed spraying train across the line on a beautiful summers day. MPV 790 made two trips across the line preforming a double spray.
We see the MPV 790 across various locations along the Dublin - Rosslare Line & the Disused South Wexford Line.
Please feel free to comment, like & subscribe.

I was looking at the South Wexford line over the weekend just gone. A farmer has placed two barriers across the line at Duncormick station to claim the land.

Fantastic video. Thank you. It brought back memories of trips down from Limerick and in the 'noughties", some Saturday evening flying visits down to Rosslare Harbour and Wellington Bridge.
If I remember correctly, the maintenance terms stipulated by the NTA envisaged a ten-year period so I am pleasantly surprised to see activity in 2021 and freshly painted LC gates though the semaphore arms came off around 2015.
They never seem to spray the loop at Wellington Bridge.
Some of the wooden sleepers looked rough too.
As for re-opening, the very weak link is the Barrow Bridge. Foynes and Rosslare are, sadly, 100% road-heads as opposed to rail-heads and unless a freight flow can be put on those rails, I doubt the line will ever re-open.
I hope those LC gates are opened again but have my doubts.

If only they could re-lay and re-open the old spur from Killinick to Wexford town (closed in 1918) and enable direct running from Wexford to Waterford...the line could then become a viable link between the two towns and with connections to Dublin from Wexford and Waterford! Loop running would be possible thru Phoenix Park tunnel..

Excellent camerawork...many thanks! I was hoping that we’d see the MPV venture over the Barrow Swing fudge but obviously they didn’t go that far. I get a little surge of hope for the railway every time any traffic travels the route...even if it’s just the weed
sprayer. Keep up the good work and let’s hope recent Government announcements might bring reinstated traffic on this much missed railway. Regards from Bournemouth in Dorset, England. Rob.

Thank you very much Rob, glad you enjoyed it!, I am going to remain optimistic that the line will reopen one day albeit with a lot of government funding to relay the track, update the crossings, redevelop stations and new signalling. It's a very encouraging sign to still see the line being maintained.

That's this country all over! they absolutely hate railways, had a walk along the line that day and it's actually frightening how bad the track actually is, any major speed on that track and a train would de-rail.

A beautiful film. Glorious sunlight, and blossoms on th hawthorns/blackthorns. Great detailed clips of MPV 790. Some of the lamp posts at the stations look like they were recently erected not long before the railway closed, I loved each and every one of the gated crossings. They look well maintained! It was nice to see the line reawake from its slumber and hear the weedsprayers wheels noise on the bolted track! Thanks for filming.

Thank you very much Pat!, at least the line gets an annual weed spray and an inspection car over it once a year, but that line needs to be completely relaid for any kind of heavy traffic to traverse the line. Hopefully that greenway planned doesn't go ahead.

This is great footage and it's so good to see that the tracks are still there as I'm sure many thought they would be gone by last year. I just wanted to ask how do you find out about these freight movements (or weedspraying, Sperry Trains etc.) and when they are going to run? In the UK we have RealTimeTrains which lists every movement going through every station but I can't find a website like that for Irish Rail Services. I would love to know how you find out about these rare services so then I might be able to see some myself next time I visit Ireland. Anyway great footage as mentioned and keep up the good work and let's hope the line is reopened. I can see so much potential in that line.

    • @irishrailtrains
      @irishrailtrains  3 года назад +2

Thank you very much, I'm glad you enjoyed it!. Honestly, I'm actually surprised the track is still there, as far as I'm aware the contract to maintain the line expired last year, so they were no longer obliged to maintain it anymore, so that weed spray move came as a bit of a surprise because there are plans to turn the line into a greenway. However a campaign is gaining momentum to reopen the line and has been brought forward to the Irish Government. This would probably explain why the line was being maintained again this year.
With regards to sourcing information, over here is really bad for trying to find out when stuff is running, I usually only get less than a week's notice when something is running. Sadly we don't have any find of real time trains tracker here, you are blessed over there to have such a system.

@@irishrailtrains Ahh ok Thank yo for the help. Is there a Facebook Group or something like that which provides the information to you and the fellow Trainspotters? I know that regarding aircraft groups have been set up to tell people information about exercises with the Military that are happening so I was wondering if there is something like that over there. Although I see no reason why RealTimeTrains can't do something for the Iarnród Éireann Network. I have filmed 3 rare movements before however. A DART Class 8600 departing Pearse on P2 going the wrong way (Towards Tara Street), a Railtour from a DART Class 8100 and the Sperry Train going through Pearse. All by complete Fluke though

With the way transport is bypassing Britain to avoid delays and the move to more sustainable transport we might hope for a return to freight movements at least for the line.
Transfers from rail to ship can be done with less infrastructure - and cost - with a bit of effort on the part of the government.
And yes, I know how they operate based on the potetntial votes they might get in any region, notwithstanding the greens who seem to be more idealism than activity.

Why do greenways have to take mothballed railway lines?
What's wrong with building such things in a more practical area?
The elderly, the infirm, those with heavy or bulky shopping, those with buggies or similar can't make use of greenways, but they can travel on trains.
And that's before we consider the weather - how many days is it unsuitable to even walk the dog?
