Given how brexit has led to so much cargo switching to Rosslare, I think there needs to be a fresh look at EI getting funding together to re-open this line. There could be demand for an unaccompanied trailer rail-haul service to / from the west of Ireland to Rosslare. It'd reduce driving hours, allow hauliers to offer a "greener" service, and save on tractor units running to/from the docks.
Lovely to watch this. I often travelled the line and think it is such a pity that it is out of use. It would be ideal for railbikes [draisine in German] and an undoubted tourist attraction. I would hate to see the tracks ripped up and it converted to a Greenway. Did the train spray on return trip? Liam
B Bannion Unless Irish Rail introduces a timetable that connects with the ferry from Rosslare then I would doubt it will ever open again, there was only two trains a day on that line when it closed, one train each direction, this eventually led to a loss of passengers which ultimately ended in the lines closure
The line is officially closed to passenger trains. Irish Rail are still obliged to maintain the line even if there is no trains running. Though it's a very slim chance it will reopen though.
Irish Rail Trains That's ridiculous! If you're going to maintain a line to operational standards you might as well run some trains over it! I remember riding this line in the early 2000s and it only had two trains in each direction. Why not reopen it and run say half a dozen trains each way every two hours right through from Rosslare to Limerick?
It is stupid!, the reason why the line did close was because of the really bad service on the line. The trains never connected with the ferries in Rosslare so as a result there was a loss of passengers. If Irish Rail had have ran a decent service on the line, say a train ever two hours each direction I'd say it would have gotten better passenger numbers. The last freight traffic on the line ceased in 2006 and the old sugar beet factory in Wellingtonbridge is long gone. So now there is nothing that runs on the line, apart from the odd inspection car movement and the Weed Sprayer once every year.
They claim that it is badly corroded beneath the water but I mean the Weed Sprayer could easily manage crossing it there in this video. It does need to be sandblasted I'd say but since the line is technically closed they won't put the investment into it.
Great video, good to see the line is still operational.
Thank You, yea I'm glad as well. I hope it stays like that for a while yet.
Brilliant video! Glad to see the line still in use!

Another wonderful poignant rly video! If all else failed: I'm sure a viola rail project wouldnt be too unrealistic!
Great vid Stevie
Nirtrainman Thanks Matty!
Do you think they'll ever open this line again? It seems like a terrible waste!

I always find it sad to see a disused railway line!
How Did You Know if It was Running
I was told about it.
I thought this line had closed? Is this a good sign of things to come?
