Over 100 years old design. I think it true to say it has stood the test of time very well.A fantastic weapon. I've had little experience of it but loved the little I have had.
I just picked one up. 200 rounds through it and it was amazing. The sights were dead on back to 50 yards. At 130 rounds the front fiber optic fell out of the gun. The sights were still functioning. Scheels replaced the fiber optic strand and it’s good as new. What a weapon!
Congratulations. You’re hooked now. The feel. The trigger. The power. Love my 1911s. Be careful putting it back together. It’s so simple yet guys scratch their frames all the time. Best of luck to you 👍

Congratulations on your new pistol it's a piece of Americana and history...one day soon I'm going to be joining you in owning one too...I used to qualify in the Marines with one...love this pistol
I am a great proponent of the basic configuration of the Government Model. When I obtained my first such pistol, the specimen was a GI surplus pistol. That was in 1966. I found the parkerized finish was a bit drab, but 'pretty' was not a primary requirement or function. I shortly decided the sights needed improvement - better visibility - and the trigger pull left something to be desired. But the intent and design are still - even after the substitution in 1985 - very solid. Superb sidearm.
The only problem I have with a Colt 1911 is the magazine springs from the factory are weak. Replace them with Wolff springs and you have a fine weapon.
@@johnharris8191 :laughing gently: I must confess, I haven't bought a 'new' Government Model since 1976 or so. That one was quite suitable as it stands. All the Bowning designed .45 ACP pistols since then have been collector's type surplus and two Colt Commanders made prior to that. But replacing all the springs with Wolfe Springs IS a good idea. Even older commercial pistols will not suffer from new springs (except collector only types).
The 1911 was designed to be pulled and fired by point shooting in an emergency like a charging enemy. The more you try to overthink it the worse it will be. The natural balance if left to its own devices and you just point it like your finger will be right where you point it. That’s why the bullseye first round. You had no preconceived recoil assumptions. You’ll realize practicing point shooting from the hip you can shoot cans off a fence easier than trying to do paper groups using two hands aiming usually. It’s natural. The more you shoot it and develop muscle memory to its weight and balance. The less aiming you’ll try to do.

The classic is awesome, I have owned 7. I got rid of all and now only own one colt 1912 and it’s a mk1v which for those who don’t know, is pretty much identical to the classic except has a rounded a1 main spring housing that’s also medal. The classic series has a plastic housing which is so weird. Great great reliable gun though.
Haven't seen a Colt product in the St. Louis area gun stores in YEARS, I know they were bought by CZ and then shut down. I would buy a Colt Lightweight Commander NOW if any were available.
This is a gun I've been putting off on buying for a very long time! It's been a gun that I've wanted since I was a kid and today, I walked into a gun store that's closing its doors soon and he dropped the price on it $100. I haven't taken my eyes off it since I swiped my card!
Minor but necessary: Take a good firm grip, don’t allow the index finger to touch the frame , use only the fingertip to contact the trigger and squeeze. Also, remove the grips if plastic and replace with good checked wood.
We have researched that possibility. Lots of options and opinions for and against doing a swap out. For the moment, we're keeping it as is as we continue to get better with the stock pistol from Colt. Making adjustments to my grip on the pistol have already helped accuracy greatly.
You need trigger control. Your trigger finger is pushing the pistol down and left. Practice isolating your index finger when you fire. Try the 70-30 grip.
