Had the pleasure of meeting him in the audience at the 400th anniversary concert in Boston. What a gentlemen and a legend of our time. In an age dominated by internet chops, Ash reminds us that a simple groove can be just as tasty.
It would be nice to have the sidemen credited by name here. Soan's Dan feel is godlike, for sure, but the band, not least the singer, makes the whole thing come to life.
Yeah, man, servicing the song is a class unfortunately most of the modern drummers should attend to. Another great teach in this discipline would be Gavin Harrisson, one of my all time favoritedrummers!! 🤩🤩
Gain structure to the room, unity fader, bit of comp/gate to taste and deal with the room, assign to VCA, leave it alone. If I'm constantly pushing faders, adjusting EQ, and it's a struggle, the band needs a lot of work. If I just set it and forget it and can enjoy my pint at FOH, then that's a good band.
Yeah. I was gonna say that you’ve heard him in multiple recordings. Go check is discography. He’s on quite a lot of Adele for instance. People hire him for a reason. He has lots of instagrams and stuff. One of the very elite in our time.
The Pocket Man! I have nothing but endless love for his flow and how he so beautifully serves the song. Every note has a purpose. Take notes, you chops circus drummers out there.
man, the tone of "could it be I've found my home at last" is in a lower tone, unresolved, then the following line "home at last" takes the whole song home. So good. The vibe is immaculate. Ash looks like a kid here enjoying Steely Dan while playing so tastefully. You da man Ash
I saw Ash playing with Tori Amos June 20th, 2023 in New Orleans, and he was amazing. I wasn't previously aware of him at that point, but he made the show for me, being a drummer myself. I had my doubts going into this video, but he again was delightful to watch!
Zildjian, I love your history and importance to sound. Keep lowering those profiles on your cymbals! Especially the As. My favorite cymbals are lower profiled shaped 1950s As. ❤❤
Saw this gent in my town few years back doing a charity show for a young local lad who died of cancer and was a talented young drummer. Many of my drumming heroes were there including the legend that is Philip Gould. Ash played a grace Jones track and was superb as were all the players that day. Rare to meet such talented people in one room. Will be a memory I'll treasure till I go in my box.
Ok no doubt the drummer is awesome, but I love how much the singer is enjoying this and his passionate yelps when they’re all just groovin. That’s what it’s all about!
Top tier performance as always but is the panning from audience's view? Don't know if I've become too snob but can't unhear it anymore and it bothers me😂
FYI, Bernard Purdie originally played on this track. Gadd is a big Purdie fan, as is Ash Soan. Listen to the swing on the original. For Purdie it's natural.

Groove>chops.
Never heard of this guy. He's fantastic and has a blast doing it.
God gift to this drummer, very talented, another awesome drummer.
not a single comment about the vocals? surprised but love em!
Everybody needs more Ash in their life! 👏👏👏

Ash plays with so much feel. It just flows through him. Absolutely love him!
What an unreal player 😮💨 just right in the pocket, servicing the song entirely - masterclass
Yeah, man, servicing the song is a class unfortunately most of the modern drummers should attend to.

🤩🤩
One of the best pocket drummers around, and his kit balance is so good; a dream for the audio engineers!

Ash Soan is just a master of the shuffle groove. He is able to put as much feel and heart into it as Purdie and Porcaro.
The pocket factor here is throught the roof. Ash oozes fluidity. dang, that kind of control is so reassuring to listen to.
The whole band is so deep in the pocket. What a great performance
My favourite drummer playing on of my favourite songs to play , this is my lucky day!
e la madonna
It's great to see drummers get lead singer camera time. Love Ash's pocket. Not dragging or rushing :)
The whole band did a fabulous job
Love my Zildjians !!!!
He looks happy. It shows he loves music and his instrument. Love his hats and cymbals, the sound of them cut through just right. Sounds good!
Wow! great performance. Embarrassed to say I don't believe I have ever heard of Ash Soan. That cat has one hell of a swinging pocket. Im a fan!
Yeah, never heard of him till now! Wow. And those drums sound amazing!
Whilst you’ve never heard of him, you’ve probably heard him hundreds of times everyday on radio etc

This is some of the most laid back, relaxing and satisfying drumming ever.
Such discipline, control, restraint, and taste!
A pro for sure.
The Pocket Man! I have nothing but endless love for his flow and how he so beautifully serves the song. Every note has a purpose. Take notes, you chops circus drummers out there.
Great drumming on a great song by Steely Dan.
Ash is one of my favorites

Groovemeister Ash! 👏👏👏
But a really great band, too!

Dam…that is one heck of a pocket…..respect!!👍😎🤙👊🤘👌Nice interplay on the Ride Cymbal with the percussionist at the 3:25 mark👍
I’ve been trying hard to use Ash’s hi hat technique, I love the sound he gets out of his.
Now this is some music.
Love Ash! Such a legend.

Fantastic groove, he’s a master of the shuffle. Awesome player.
What’s not to LOVE! 💙🙏
Man that set sounds great.
Such precision as well and that trigger on the snare is dope.
100%! Woohoo! Lived it.
Great player . Love him 🙏🏼
Bernard would approve
Pocket defined!
Outstanding cover of a ridiculously tricky song.😊
Amazing performance!

Really great Ash

I think I remember you playing this with Uncle Remus in 1976 😊
Nice and groovy.
Incredibly underrated drummer
Why do you think that? He is probably one of the busiest session drummers out there...
Notable!!! Remembering groove!
Ash's playing rocks
Cool jam.............!
Perfect.
감동!! 💕
Bello/magnifico.💎💎💎💎💎💎💰
Love that guy !
I met the performers before the show & only got a fleeting moment with Ash. Regardless, he projected a cool dude vibe & his playing was equal to that!
Perfection.
Great timing
As long as Ash has his Walkman, life is good
Ok no doubt the drummer is awesome, but I love how much the singer is enjoying this and his passionate yelps when they’re all just groovin. That’s what it’s all about!
Fantastic shuffle
Nice Ash!
Solid.
Ash's a winner :)
That snare❤
Walkman on the snare for extra pocket
Yep, the yellow waterproof sport one which was always a bit too expensive for me
master shuffle
yeaaahhh
Smoothest shuffler out there.
Ash rules.
Sony Walkman on the snare? Sweet!
Ash and Steely??? Sweettt
the shuffle!
Wow
The mix on his Gretsch is actual perfection. Big time Steely vibes.
Soan 행님 지기네예...😊😊😊😊
Top tier performance as always but is the panning from audience's view? Don't know if I've become too snob but can't unhear it anymore and it bothers me😂
Such a groove! Great track!
What sizes of drums is he playing here?
Funky!!!
I kept waiting to hear the chorus "Babylon Sisters shake it". The verses sound exactly like that song.
I can only hope to be that cool when I'm that age
Ash has Gadd pocket 😊
FYI, Bernard Purdie originally played on this track. Gadd is a big Purdie fan, as is Ash Soan. Listen to the swing on the original. For Purdie it's natural.
I'd love to hear the story of how and why he replaced Tori Amos's drummer, Matt Chamberlain. Both are amazing!
man that groove is tasty as my granny's homemade biscuits
Nice - who's the singer ?
I believe it’s Daniel Pearce. I’ve done a few gigs with him. Long time ago. He’s a mean drummer himself.
