Vinnie is number 1 for me. Super technical sight reader that can play virtually anything, but never overplays the parts. He blends in to exactly what the piece requires. Genius talent with a humble degree of control.
Never overplays the parts?!?! You have got to be kidding me, right?! Vinnie overplays all the time in live settings. And unlike every other drummer who does this, we drummers fucking love it! Everyone stops, takes notice, and tries to fold their tongues back into their mouths. My number one too, by the way.
Herbie Hancock is a beast on keys!!! Nathan East is a master bass player!! That guitarist was awesome!! Vinnie is off the hook!!! A drummer’s drummer!!!
How awesome do you have to be to call up Herbie and Nathan (Lionel was new to me) and say "I have this drum show booked and I need a band"? That's clout.
The 2 marks of this genius are: 1. I have heard this track a billion times, and in every single version it is different, the same, original and a new take on an old master, and 2. Dammit - the VERY first chord when he solos - you just KNOW that it is Herbert Jeffrey Hancock. Nobody used chords and inflexion like him. Its been an honour to have him in my life for 50 years so far! And Vinnie just keeps pumping through every change - even with one hand when he loses a stick!! THIS - ladies and gentlemen - IS CLASS!
I listened to Mike Clark's original from the 'Thrust' album. Clark's ability to groove over individual pieces of the drum kit was unmatched. I was fortunate enough to see that group play 'Actual Proof' live in concert... truly amazing. This version shows off Vinnie Colaiuta's ability to both cover and complement Clark's work.
Vinnie has devoted his entire life to mastering his craft. An inspiration. We become what we devote our attention and effort to. It's not just talent. It's relentless focus and WORK!
Beautifully put. I think it’s true for every facet of our lives. We become and we are what we spend the most time doing. Want to be really - just astoundingly good at something? Spend an incredible amount of time on it and watch the magic unfold.
I delivered pizza to Forge Recording studio just outside Philadelphia in 2020 and Nathan what is just getting done a session. I had to say hi and he was cool. The dude co wrote Easy Lover by Phil Collins!
Check the video where Steve Vai talks about Vinnie sight-reading impossible music during Zappa rehearsals, turning pages, adjusting his glasses and eating sushis at the same time without missing a single beat
Ironic how so many Zappa discovered drummers were later hired by so many musicians who wouldn't give Zappa his due. Vinny is still the beasts of beasts. No one near him.
@@stefanstrittmatter6459 Because Zappa doesn't fit into any musical culture. Every culture has its snobs so to say - never looking outside of their little world. ("I'm a jazzer... I only play classical... I'm a rocker" etc.). Zappa helped shape their worlds in ways they still are unaware. But hey... that's most of the planet.
Vinnie is what drumming in this century is all about everyone from the late Jeff beck to Herbie Hancock all sound their best with a guy like Vinnie he is modern day drumming. Excellent 👌
Thrust is such an excellent album, and timeless as you can hear. It's hard to believe that this track is half a century old. If you don't have it on vinyl or cd, then you need to start clicking some buttons!
Fantastic Herbie and his team of musical geniuses truly deliver during this performance. This song inspired me to get up and work out on my Day Off Lol, that's huge.
When I went to Disneyland more than 30 years ago, it was very lucky that I happened to see him perform in his big band. Of course, his sound was awesome and movement of his body, hands and arms were so smooth like a flowing river.
I picture myself at a club and this is playing on stage, just listening to this on Utube brought it so close but being there would of been so transcendent. In my head resounded a permanent WOW!!!!!
These guys, right here, are absolute masters of their craft: every last one of them, absolute legends. The amount of years of just the highest level of performance on that stage is immense. That being said, I personally don't find a whole lot of "new" when it comes to jazz fusion as a idiom - almost like it's been explored as much as it can be by these immense talents. As a result, while I still enjoy the occasional performance in this genre, I've found myself gravitating toward the music of Jojo Mayer's band Nerve --which is just a completely different sound and derrives from a completely different space altogether. For me, personally, what Jojo Mayer's band is doing now is what I imagine people listening to Ornette Coleman's "The Shape of Jazz to Come" in 1959 must have felt when they heard that album, and I don't make that comparison lightly - *at all* .
Fantastic! I wish just for once though Vinnie would play with a little feeling!!😅I commented that to one of the Jeff Beck at Ronnie Scott’s tunes, the man plays with effort I’ve never seen, he never EVER tires out!!!
#1 legend and inspiration for me. Tough between Vin and Gadd. Both just so damn great. But Colaiuta is the guy. Also love me some Carlock. Legends all of them.
I don't think they're comparable. Gadd is a rock-solid studio guy. Vinnie is a technical monster a la Weckl. (Ditto Carlock.) If you like chops (which I do), it's Vinnie, Weckl, Carlock.
Imagine the headspace (or outside of) you’d have to be in to know your role within. Fucking absolutely incredible. The original is not quite as involved, but incredible nonetheless. This LIVE version is devastatingly complex, yet together. Herbie always assembles the masters of sound. ♥️🎶
Sick. How on earth do these guys memorize all the rhythms and accents? And Who on earth writes this stuff to begin with??.. And How many hundreds of hours of rehearsal does it take to pull off something like this? Amazing.
Vinnie fantastic as well as all the others. I also hear Vinnie is a Born Again Christian which more important Evangelist Roger Mansour former drummer for Leslie West Vagrants 😊
Of course he's one of the greatest, but how can we judge who is the best ever ? Better technician ? Better musician ? Most influencial ? Most popular ? Different eras, different styles, different techniques, different genres, etc.
It remains to find out how many different tempos, the escalations in the harmonic progression and the timing of the intervals to be able to improvise on it...
That's top of the shelf drumming right there, but ironically most people are listening to the TR808 in popular music. Some beats are creative, but they're definitely repetitive.
No better drummer ever in music history. So disciplined and a practiced, absolute master!
Vinnie is number 1 for me. Super technical sight reader that can play virtually anything, but never overplays the parts. He blends in to exactly what the piece requires. Genius talent with a humble degree of control.
Along with Todd Sucherman and Gavin harrison. tasteful players with a ton of ability but always serve the song.
Jason.Rullo for me. Rullo can play Power metal, Prog metal, jazz fusion, funk, afro cuban, latin music with finesse, extreme technically!!!
Vinnie is a true legend, absolutely.. But he certainly got caught up by the new legends such as Larnell Lewis.
Larnell Lewis couldn’t tie vinnys shoelaces and larnell would also agree
He’s good but not in this league
Never overplays the parts?!?! You have got to be kidding me, right?! Vinnie overplays all the time in live settings. And unlike every other drummer who does this, we drummers fucking love it! Everyone stops, takes notice, and tries to fold their tongues back into their mouths.

Highest paid session bassist, I'm told. 🎸
He's the most versatile bass player around, he's literally played with most music stars out there over the year's
He certainly is
And he's a terrific singer, too. Just an all-around superlative musician.
G’damn, Vinnie!! GOATest of all time.

Stellar group. Vinnie is about the most tasteful drummers and refined, his work with Sting was also awesome. He's the Swiss Army knife of Drums.
He played on some of megadeaths songs. I haven’t heard it though.

Mike is the man! He did a great clinic with Charlie Hunter in North Carolina several years back that was an incredible experience
You guys remember the funky drummer tape with Mike and Paul Jackson they played at every GC in the late nineties? Dirty.
Vinnies understanding of music and his style are just fantastic!
I never tire from watching this performance
Me, too! It's my favorite version of my favorite Herbie tune.
What a great mixture of iconic Jazz Fusion musicians here...
Vinnie and weckl are seconds to none! True legends!
Sit Vinnie down now (current state) with Steve Smith... we see ....
And Steve Gadd
And the late Leon Chancler
Weckl number one… has the musicianship that is second to none… can play ANY style with taste and precision ❤
