When a car part won’t come off: A seized wiper arm removed the home mechanic way

- I was trying to replace the rear wiper motor on a 2000 Dodge Minivan and ran into immediate trouble when the wiper arm proved to be seized to the motor shaft. This an all too common situation when removing car parts…but a wiper arm? Watch the frustrating, original and sometimes comic process of a stubborn home mechanic finding a way to get it done.

I'm having the same nightmare on my f20 1 series. You showed great perseverance lol
My hats off to you man. I had to chuckle near the end as you reminded me of myself ' just won't give in' great diy video!
I liked this video because it shows the way life often works, and many self-help videos hide something it seems, and/or try to make a task easier than it actually is. I can identify with this effort; sometimes you screw up and 'break the glass,' but the secret to success many times is persistence. (Ray Kroc-Mc Donalds)
Nicely done David. You taught us an important set of DIY lessons: Reuse, Repurpose, Adapt, Modify, Create, Invent, and be persistent. Five gold stars keep up the good work.
Some might call DIY a kind of mania, but I like your description better.
I love this video and your thought process! Do more of these please!
This video REALLY brings home how much easier life can be with a little oiling and preventive maintenance lol. Twice a year, beginning of spring and beginning of autumn clean and oil doors, wipers hinges seals etc. Takes less than 15 minutes and saves you a hell of a lot of time and money in the long run.
great video! i was able to pull mine of a 09 prius using a big pair of channel lock pliers, putting the "top" jaw on the protruding bolt(won't work unless you have a protruding bolt) and the bottom jaw on the arm. Popped right off
Thanks for all the ideas. Most of the videos on this subject only deal with the type of arm that has the bolt exposed. This was an impractical design to begin with, followed by the failure of the manufacturer to use anti-seize as they should have. Oh well. I'm going to try these methods after spending an entire day failing. Thank you for your video. Sometimes a guy just needs some ideas!
You're welcome and good luck!
great video, several options presented and very creative ideas,,,,bravo !!
This Is Hilarious...Made My Day!!
What might have worked (before doing all that) if you tried drilling a tiny hole big enough to put the small red spray applicator/hose that comes with WD40 or other penetrants (I like using Sea Foam Deep Creep) then spraying the thing well through the drilled hole with penetrating oil. The corrosion inside would have disolved and it most likely would have come loose... The anti-seize on the post was a great idea. Afterwards you could use a dab of black silicone to seal up the hole that was drilled.
Thumbs up! 👍🏼
Very helpful video, thank you!
That brought tears to my eyes
This video was so satisfying, great job and great tricks! I did laugh a little but I think you were going for that, thanks for a great video!
So glad you enjoyed it!
moral of the story, don't by a chrysler......LOL
I’m having this EXACT problem!!! 😡
I need that puller thing!
I specifically asked Ford to replace the rear arm and they agreed , the. Their service department said they couldn’t get parts because of “ supply chain problems”. But I’m convinced they just didn’t know how to get it off either.
The next step was to attach a tow chain to the rear of an F150, and then.....
LOL I was thinking he was going to replace the gas cap next that might help!
Idiot's Doing Stupid things is RUclips"s claim to fame!
DUH I Believe he simply had not released the catch .
A little more heat and no need for a back wiper.
Surely if it was an F150, the tow chain would be on the front end!?
Lmao!!
Thanks, now I know what I am up against with my similar repair.
Fearless!... Keep the faith!
Great Patience.Sorry you had all that trouble.i thoughtvyou might break the glass with the heat.I wish I could of loaned you my puller tool
👍🇬🇧
Congratulations on eventual success! Everyone who repairs cars has been there, at the moment of stuckness. The glass in this design makes me nervous. Maybe some padding with heavy baking foil on top before the propane flame gets close? That window is tempered and if a crack starts , it will run and frost the whole thing into gravel, instantly. Windshields are usually in stock, back windows less so. Nice display of creative thinking.
+gem anscombe I'll admit that I was very quick to pull out with the heat. Foil sounds like a good idea. Thanks for the excellent comment!
Well great job on accomplishing what you set out to do. I am still paying on my car so I hesitate when it comes to trying anything that could mess it up. So that's why I just bought a windshield wiper arm remover. It was $9.00 and got the job done without breaking anything . But thank you for the video I enjoyed it.
Thanks for watching. A wiper arm remover wouldn't help on this design, at least not until I drilled a hole in the end of the arm. Good work and thanks for the comment!
Thank you for posting this video. I just ordered a puller and will be using that after drilling a hole. Hopefully it'll work for my car too.
You're welcome. Having a wiper arm puller should make it easy once you have a hole drilled. Thanks for watching and good luck!
It worked! Thank you for the idea. I didn't even know that tool existed before your video. :)
Great! Nice work.
having this exact issue right now in the UK on my 2006 Skoda Fabia! Damn thing just won't budge!
you never give up lol
Persistence is impressive. So is having a workshop full of tools --- to change a wiper blade!
Good old Yankee ingenuity here Sir. Learned hoe to make a puller for those Caravans . Once again, thanks.
You're welcome. I'm always tickled when someone appreciates this type of extreme DIY.
you will be the new engineer for chrysler-congrats
No way. He's got too much sense... and besides, he didn't use any plastic...
Good videos 👍🏻
remember. women won't find you handsome but will find you handy.
Pretty much how Jiffy lube would do it as well. Way to stick with it.
You get an A+ for tenacity!
Thanks for favorable grade!
I am impressed with your perseverance!
I'm desperately trying to to just remove the cap that cover the bolt in the rear wipe arm of my ford escape 02. I can only move the latch (you did it in this video too) It is supposed to open when one pull the arm away from the window but nothing move. Please help !!!
This is comedy Gold
I loved your video, thinking outside the box, and sticking with it until you came up with a working solution. I will next try the wood wedges and see if I can get it to work for me. Also, I saw in another video I could get the puller tool, but that is likely the only thing I will ever use the tool for, and I am getting rid of the car, so that would be a poor investment.
Great video, tks
You're welcome. I appreciate the comment!
I used a grinder/cutter disk to cut out a 1/8 of the the wiper arm in 2 minutes total. Bought a wiper arm from a junkyard for $5... cheaper than buying a puller... installed the replacement arm after appying some anti seize paste...
I bought an $11 puller for my 2010 Ford Escape wiper, and that did not work. One puller arm started to bend. I could not see any latch like you had. Is there some notch or something that I'm not seeing?
I bought a partly assembled new bicycle. I couldn't loosen the bolt to install the front wheel. WD-40 didn't work. My friends at the hardware store tried their power tools, no luck.
I hope you were able to loosen it up.
Thanks. I'm trying to remove the glass from the rear on one of these, the shop manual isn't of great help this time.
You're welcome. I've never done that either (yet). But I bet someone has a video on You Tube...
I just drilled small holes around the threading, 5 total and voila. Comes right off..
make my day PUNK lol.
aint i seen you on Dirty Harry ?
Gawd... I wonder how the guys at the Chrysler shop do that...?
Probably just replace the entire back window, motor, wiper, and all, and charge the customer $2500.
Steve Craig the dealer mechanic uses a $10/$20 dollar puller that they can use for many years and fit multiple vehicles. I hope this guy is doing this on his own vehicle instead of damaging other peoples.
Waiting for the cracked window...
I went the other way when I ran into the same problem, beforehand i went to the junkyard and got a couple of wiper arms (not seized to their old cars) and then, I just used a hacksaw, and made my way around the thing until I could separte the remains with some pliers... And that was it, "new" wiper arms came after it.
Nice. That's a sensible solution.
lol lol.... u da man bruh
that was hilarious
Jus four of curiosity....did you try the $10 puller from Amazon in the first place?
The problem is that there is no access to the motor shaft. Those pullers need that to push against.
Just think how good a car could be designed and built by a mechanic, or even someone like me that just messes around with them and amazed how stupid they are designed, Good job.
Thanks for watching and commenting. I often have that same thought.
when changing wiper blades be careful not to knee the fenders too hard.
Big A for afford !
why the F they can't make these things just a straight connection and not a taper is beyond me.
have same problem on 06 Cobalt, it seized on there so bad it bends the lips on my pull lmao. need to fashion something like ur modified washer to remove it I suppose.. damn scam artist these people are to design something in this way. Great video
It's rather a long time ago I know - but do you have any I/D dimensions for the washers in the "final solution"?
I've done everything you tried - and now only have the heavy washer(s) left to try...
Regards,
Martin Bronsdon, Gothenburg, Sweden (1995 Chrysler Voyager)
I saved the washer. The ID is 27mm (1 1/8"). The OD is 63mm (2 1/2") . Thickness is 3.5mm (5/16"). Good luck and thanks for watching!
Thanks a million! Can I bother you for the dimensions of the smaller washer? This rear wiper mechanism has a smaller splined shaft than those on the front windscreen (one of which I sucessfully removed the other day)
Regards,
Martin
Sorry, I don't have that one anymore. You'll just have to find one with an ID that matches the diameter of the motor shaft and an OD that's big enough to cover the ID of the bigger washer.
The Original Mechanic
No trouble - thanks anyway for your prompt and informative reply’s.
/Martin
you never thought of adding lube to hole?
suggest you use foil or aluminium screen to protect the windsheld glass. Heat will also damage the heated elements of that rear window, not too mention glass cracking under heat. I have similar problem on my ford van...have sprayed with release agent etc. Why can;t manufacturers incorporate a small plastic ring between arm and spindle? would make things much easier!
Thanks for the helpful ideas. I was very conservative in the use of heat and prying tools around that rear glass. You're right, a little better engineering could prevent this kind of struggle. Have a good one!
Are you sure the clip was not some part still in the lock groove? See here: ruclips.net/video/4gjHVO-hLhk/видео.html
why he did not try to plase it from other side? if it is alredy broken he dont have to be gentle anymore
If in doubt, C4 ! lol
must be nice living in the boondocks with nothing to do. on the floor laughing!!!!!!!!!!!
Are you nuts? Using heat near glass in cool weather??! You're lucky it didn't explode.
Nuts? Yeah, probably but I was cautious with the heat.
TRY A SMALL WHEEL PULLER!
Just buy a simple..wiper arm puler..dont use that blow torch
A puller wouldn't work for this type of arm. There was nothing to pull against.
That was one tough son of a bitch next time use a sledgehammer
How many hours do you want to spend on this (S)! Time to take it to the dealer rather than risk breaking the rear window? Chrysler keeps right on making this Garbage too! So give up 6 hours of your time or pay the dealer a Fortune to fix it?
Is this a prank video? There is a nut under the cover, u didn't take it off, that's why this thing wouldn't budge. WFT
+mart9898 No prank and no nut.
+mart9898 Having the same prob right now with my 2004 Santa Fe. A puller will probably get it off
+Shawn C Yeah, if there is an opening for a puller that's the best way to go.
+Shawn C Take the cover and the nut off, and then use a puller. This video was shot while the guy was high on acid.
+mart9898 There's no cover or nut, just Chrysler engineering!! The only thing that gets me high is a trip to the mountains.
