"Use the airbrush in such a way where I blend and unify the values within the forms but I don't want to blend the forms with each other. That's how you destroy your structure." 💯💯💯💯 Thank you for this. It really made me understand exactly how I always lose my forms when blending which resulted in a structureless drawing.
@@_just_an_garlic_bread_ it's just a different method to achieve an effect you like. It's fine either way *Depends on the style you like best. Neither way is wrong, this way is just to mimic the way a traditional brush or pencil would be used to blend.
Ah man, I feel like I stumbled onto a hidden gem. It's a shame there's only two videos on this channel. I bet your educational content would have been nuts. Thank you very much for the help.
I know the airbrush can give a general undertone of color to render on top of or underneath, but I myself never liked just relying on the airbrush for rendering cuz it took away too much texture and made things look too sim like
You know, I rarely if ever watch "art tutorial" videos, but this has really helped me realize that I've been holding myself back in a choke hold. I'd wondered why I'm so much better at rendering structures traditionally with pencils on paper than with any of my digital work. I think I really need to go back to basics digitally, and force myself to slow my roll before I continue my works, so I can be satisfied with what I'm making. This has been really helpful. I can't seem to edit my brushes the way you can, but I'm going to check if I'm able to in other programs I use. Thanks so much!!
Dude thanks for actually teaching people something, including myself. Far too many artists posting online gloss over things like this and it feels like they don't want to share their "secrets" if you will. I see so many speedpainting videos and trying out different styles but no simple explanation to things like rendering. I even asked a guy on Artstation to maybe show his working a little more, perhaps a timelapse to show how he does his excellent rendering, to which he liked the comment and proceeded to upload the same finished pieces plus 1 earlier sketch. When art is a learned skill, there is no secret sauce to making perfect art and we're all constantly learning so I don't know why so many people don't want to share their processes. To me, there is exploration of techniques and finding a balance of what works for you. Years later and this is STILL the most helpful RUclips video I’ve ever watched on the topic of rendering. I love how you presented the information in a practical, easy-to-digest fashion; these are principles I keep in mind whenever I render now.
I watch a lot of videos on art tutorials for fun, but this is honestly one of the best descriptions for rendering. Would love to see your approach to rendering in color
@@EricaNewGirl these days I normally add color to my drawings but I can do a video like that at some point. The process is pretty identical, except the shadow and light shapes are blocked in with the appropriate color tones instead, with some variation injected into it while keeping temperature in mind as well.
This tutorial helped me so incredibly much! I just started out with digital art and I was using the airbrush constantly. And you're so right, it looked so muddy and weird. Just spent an hour following your tutorial and it's made a huge difference. Thank you! I was shocked to see you only have two videos on your channel. The quality of the video made me think you'd been making tutorials for years
Very helpful tips! I love how you gave yours a hazy glow around the hair and face, which gives it a nice focus. I appreciate your tip on the airbrush, it's useful when achieving a gradient effect for general gradual shifts in value on your piece, but if used incorrectly will cause your drawing to lose shape and form. Definitely have to try this exercise out! 😁👍
I really love this. I use CSP and I usually use hard edge shading cause i was trained in animation, but i've always wanted to do more rendered and softer shading. this video helped a lot. Thank you.
The last time I saw someone explain how to properly render this well was in my first drawing course like one year ago, but it was in traditional rendering using drawing pencils. Your translation to digital was super useful to me as I am doing the jump to digital medium, thank you for explaining that well! Subscribing because I saw you plan on doing new videos soon in the comments (:
amazing art and amazing advice! i think a lot of artists who are still trying to learn think that hard brushes are the antithesis of 'natural' looking or more 'realistic' art so they try to do it all completely with airbrushing, or that soft always equals 'realistic'. but in reality there are a lot of cases to be made and examples of both, and mixtures of each! and plus, sometimes, you don't have to make it completely "realistic" for it to feel *real*, yknow?
Well fucking finally a good video that shows how to work shadows. I've been trying to find someone that could explain to me simply what brush to pick and how to work your way through the dark/light starting phase to the final blended tones, but I always end up listening to some "I do it this way" kinda video that never really shows nor tells you what and how to do it.
Thank you! I've been struggling to learn digitally cuz I'm used to traditional and I see a lot of tutorials are stretched out or use airbrush, so this is just what I needed xD
I too thought its not a good idea to use airbrush too much late until I found christophe young rendering with just one soft round brush.. almost from start finish for is mind blowing.. 💥 🔥
Yeah I’m somewhat familiar, our process isn’t too dissimilar. The brush isn’t as soft as the standard airbrush. It’s somewhere between totally hard and totally soft, this gives you some of the precision from a hard brush while also giving you some of the blending of a completely soft brush. Handles more like graphite or charcoal.

For a simple study like this I don’t typically set up the layers in any special way. Create a new layer, paint for a bit, if it looks good I merge it down, rinse and repeat.
