Most comments from folks here who know that he was not only vastly underrated but THE MOST UNDERRATED Giant on that amazing 1984-90 defense which Parcells and Belichick architected. Reasons had a knack for the football as evidenced by all the interceptions (10) and fumble recoveries (9) throughout his career. But his ability to square up his pads, lock onto his target and knock the daylights out of him was as textbook as it was beautiful to watch. Watching him knock Ottis Anderson and Stump Mitchell around in 1985, like rag dolls, was a thing of beauty. The famous Bobby Humphrey hit, on 4th and Goal from the one in Denver, was his signature play. The fake punt in the 1990 NFC Championship was one of several clutch plays that made that Giant masterpiece one for the ages. So take a bow, Gary Reasons, as your Giant fans, and fans of NFL Football, appreciate and celebrate your marvelous career and achievements!

Undoubtedly a model for the 3-4 linebacker factory Belichick ran in the first decade of the Patriots' dynasty, very comparable to Mike Vrabel. Plain and simple, the fake punt put the Giants in the Super Bowl against Buffalo. In a game where we couldn't get in the end zone, we needed that play desperately. 30 years later, I still can't believe it happened.

LT didn't play that day in Denver in the snow. The Giants' D needed to raise it's collective game, and Reasons sure did that day. Madden praised him all game that day in Denver in 89. What a performance!

I’m not a NY Giants fan. But I’ll never forget where and what I was doing when Reasons ran for that 1st down against the 49ers to get them to the Super Bowl to play Buffalo! The Giants had, not good Linebackers, lol they had GREAT Linebackers! Carl Banks (who should be in the HOF) Gary Reasons, Lawrence Taylor, Leonard Marshall & Harry Carson along with other good Linebackers. (I’m not a fan, that’s why I don’t know all of their great Linebackers) I’ll also never forget where I was when Scott Norwood: “wide-right! Norwood kick is wide-right! The NY Giants are Super Bowl Champions!”
The toughest linebacker that flies under the radar with the linebacker crew of Carl Banks, Harry Carson, Lawrence Taylor, The play that I remember from Gary Reasons was that Goal-line stand against The Broncos when he hit the running back so hard his mouthpiece flew out of his mouth. John Madden/Pat Summerall called that game. You hear John Madden say after that play now that's Football. That same play in Roger Goodell NFL that's a 15-yard penalty & the running back from the Broncos? Mandatory concussion protocol

Sadly, I didn't see that play on TV as it happened, so for me the ultimate moment of Reasons was the fake punt against SF in the Championship in Jan 1991. My college buddies and I were alternating between screaming with joy and climbing the walls with anxiety as that unbelievable 4th Quarter progressed.

On the fake punt against the 49ers....San Fran had only 10 men on the field...it was up to Reasons to make that call for the fake, which he did! And with great success!!! G-MEN!!!!!!
very ,very good pass defender in middle short zone ( unlike some the high price guys who followed him) they may have caught the ball but were tackled right away- great run on that fake punt too!
He was always my preference to DeOssie as a starter, besides Pepper on the inside of the 3-4. He was quick and able to cover his zone responsibilities very well, and was as tough as DeOssie. DeOssie was better against the run, but Reasons proved his capacity to handle the running game in many occasions too. Us fans were spoiled for a very long time by having a top 3 linebacking group in the whole league. We may have been a top 2, but I don't want to exaggerate, because overall, our front 7 was number 1 when it is all said and done.
@@mattp722 There are a lot of amazing LB crews that one can advocate for, but the Giants were staked all of those years. The Saints were awesome, but they did not have back ups like the Gmen did. The Gmen may have been the deepest great LB that I can think of during those years. Great memories.
Agreed. The Giants had incredible depth at linebacker in the '80s and early '90s. Their backups were better than many starters on a bunch of teams.@@wbdrugstrat
Finesse football is great and all, but Reasons played REAL football. Pop you in the mouth football. Even if the other teaqm won, they knew they played the Giants by how sore they were the next day! I was born in 88, but my understanding is, during the 80s you had the "new" teams like the 49ers who were all about the short pass west coast offense, and a few old the "old" teams like the Giants and Bears, who still played punch you in the mouth football.

Good call. I can't think of a better linebacking group except for maybe the Saints (Jackson, Johnson, Mills, Swilling).
