  • A Fresh new Painting Challenge- wish me luck! I grab a random mini and the dice decide what kind of character trope I’ll be painting. I’m faced with some truly mysterious minis from the Warpfire Minis Roulette Challenge box. No Spoilers, but I’m REALLY happy with how this project turned out! Goobertown Roulette Episode 6 was a huge success! :-)

  • @DwarfyDoodad
    @DwarfyDoodad 4 года назад

    Other people have said it, and honestly I have to agree. You really are the Bob Ross of Miniature painting. "I used my airbrush, but there's nothing wrong with using a spray can"
    Honestly, it is reassuring as someone who struggles with being over obsessive and critical to see you encouraging and openly speaking about making random choices, or mistakes and as long as they aren't too bad, not obsessing over them. Just doing better on the next one. And then your voice is just a soothing even tone, which helps engage and relax.
    It makes your videos soothing to watch, and engaging on both a mental level for painting, and separate level with not being over critical, or feeling you need a specific technique or tool to paint (Air brush vs Regular brush, for example)

  • @javgoro
    @javgoro 4 года назад

    The marauder horsemen are just great, great sculpts. Very dynamic and barbarian-like. I recently painted 10 of them in a batch in Khorne colours and while it was a long endeavour, the results were very pleasing. Given that paint scheme, this guy would even work as a lore-compliant Nurgle worshipper, so bonus points for that.

    My guess to his love of green:
    His mother wore a green dress and gave him a green shirt before he was taken by his bandit dad, never to see his mother again, and he was raised with bandits for a few years.
    His dad had an odd love of emeralds and jade stone, and he got beaten savagely when he couldn't find any in the loot he stole for his father. The blows upon his head rattled his mind and started his unpredictable behavior. He escaped his abusive bandit father, only because he fell in with the chaos faction, who trained him and raised him the rest of the way into adulthood!

      I like making up stories... one reason why D&D always appealed to me, I'm only starting to give it a go now that they have these calculators for stats. I have Dyscalculia so maths is hard. Was always intimidated by the numbers in the game.
      Here's part of a story written for my stuffed hedgehog, (I lost a good chunk of it) Ethelthruck was a mage. The shield could shrink and he would carry it in his pocket, to anyone else it seems like a useless trinket, now it is perfect size in its small form. I forget where I had said his pendant had came from.

      "After the betrayal, EthelThruck found himself alone in the field of battle, stripped of armor and of weapons... Only his pendant and Magic Glass Shield remained. After swearing revenge, he salvaged what he could and headed into the darkness before him. His only light, his shield, his only weapon, a weak wooden wand, and the only protection he could find, a simple nutshell. It would be a hard long walk back to Amperthem."

    He's fricken incredible.. I would put him in a glass case with his own light. Of course it helps that he's painted my favorite color. I have that same green stuff roller, it works great on xps foam and dollar store ready board foam, the little striations don't register just the overall pattern. You could probably make up a piece of the ready board and glue it onto a mini base, prime it with a couple thin coats mod podge to make it sturdy (don't spray paint it, it'll melt, acrylic with brush or airbrush only).

One of the giggles was to be presented with a mounted Rohirrim figure base black. We were give a size o brush, sat in front of a box of random paints and told we had 10 minutes to paint. I simply blind picked the paint from the box and worked from the inside out on the model and had enough time to even shade the horse's cowling. The winner managed to paint his model and provide a picture of a teddy bear on the cowling as the knight's emblem.

    If you allow, I have a fun challenge suggestion (forgive me if you actually did it already and I missed it somehow): painting a decently sized miniature using only the most basic painting tools for kids like felt-tip pens, basic watercolor set and kid's paint brush. None of those fancy air sprays :) I would love to watch that and I think a lot people would too

    • @GoobertownHobbies
      @GoobertownHobbies  5 лет назад

      Thanks for the suggestion! You have a very good point. The airbrush is just so fun, but I know lots of people don't have one so I should definitely do some more videos without it!

    Having seen this I too am interested in trying a Warpfire Minis box - be a nice, fun challenge! My idea to them would be to wrap the minis in very light, recyclable tissue paper and mail them in either a recyclable box or jiffy-bag; cut down eco impact of using a disposable plastic wrap

    This variant of Goobertown Roulette is definitely very fun! I am almost certainly going to try it on one of my Riot Quest models. I would suggest a sometimes mutation to Goobertown Roulette that brings back the "challenge" dice from the original (so a third roll in addition to these two). I'm thinking of the "60 minute challenge", "limited paint set", "incorporate OSL", etc. style one.
    Thanks for another awesome video!

      Thanks! Yeah this was a lot of fun. I decided to keep this roll table really simple because I knew I'd be rolling for 5 models, but the painting technique dice definitely adds a whole other level to these challenges- those will return! :-)

    As for the warpcrate wrapping, I think the bubble wrap would be fine for me, but that if a group split a box like this and did a challenge where they each painted something , then it would be better to have a more opaque wrapper.
    Nice cat moment right at the end there, too!

    • @GoobertownHobbies
      @GoobertownHobbies  5 лет назад

      Thanks Ronald! A group of friends buying one of these and drawing straws would be a lot of fun. I'm guessing they use bubble wrap so that it's easy to pack them to make sure each box has a good spread, but I might be wrong on that. Once you look through the bubble wrap the model can no longer "be anything" so there's some interesting psychology there. Sometimes that cat refuses to stay on her pillow!!! :-)

    The Warpcrate can come with downs. I tried them out when the Warpcrate was still in Beta back in April when i started learning to paint minis as my other hobby, modding and painting Nerf blasters, was getting stale. That first crate was exactly, what Brent had said, I received a random Ork (painboy) and 2 random Space Marines (Mephiston & a Tactical Marine). Absolutely loved it. Once the service went live, I subscribed. Then feel like i was trolled. I mentioned i wanted to get some Death Guard minis to practice painting, and maybe some Necrons too. The next crate was a Blight Hauler and 5 Plaguebearers. Didn't want to paint vehicles, but figures. I let that one slide, because it provided great practice to nail down how i wanted to practice and lock in my Death Guard Green recipe. The next crate contained 16 Poxwalkers (WTH?) and another Blight Hauler. Honestly, i felt like they didn't pay enough attention to their individual clients requests. Each bag in my last 2 crates had a DG written on it, so i gather they pick and fill the bags ahead of time, and just grab bags marked with their client's preference (or one of their preferences), throw it in the bag and ship it off, without marking what they were sent to avoid duplicates.
    I cancelled my subscription after that. Maybe they have took my feedback "why couldn't i receive 1 random mini from each of my selected factions so i can better my painting skills?" and learned from it. Unless i see a trend of replies showing you actually get randoms of your chosen factions like the crate in this video and my first crate, I'll continue to remain unsubscribed. Sorry to rant a bad review, but based on the price and what the client requests, you may not always get what you're hoping for. It all depends on what they have in stock. They are consignment for WH mini's first. Remember that before subscribing to a Warpcrate.

    • @warpfireminis
      @warpfireminis 5 лет назад

      For packing the Warpcrates we do pre-pack the bags for specific factions as stuff rolls into the shop, a customer places an order we go randomly grab one of those bags and ship it. We don't keep a history of what is sent out in each Warpcrate so repeats are a possibility, but it is truly random so getting a Blighthauler twice in a row was just a bad roll of the dice. You can change your preferences at any time and do take customer requests! If you wanted to get a mix of your desired factions you just need to put that into the notes section of the subscription and we'll try our best to make it happen!
