  • Building an epic diorama to match a piece of artwork from Warhammer 40k. I use all of the skills and hobby materials at my disposal to capture the mood of this incredible scene. On this giant display base, a space marine is fighting a desperate battle to defend his homeworld from the tyranid hive fleet. Will his planet survive?
    This video is part of a collaboration with Squidmar miniatures! Check out his half of the collaboration here: • Surprise Miniature Cha...
    In this video, Emil has challenged me to adapt a piece of warhammer 40k art into a diorama. The picture reminds me of the battle for macragge storyline from 4th edition 40k, so that's what I went with! I made a winter battleground scene, and I did my best to paint the marine the way that he is represented in the art!

      I am starting the hobby and I am starting with space marines, what is the vehicle I should get?
      I got the Warhammer 40K Command edition ($165) and I think I want to get a vehicle with it
      Right now I choose the predator tank, should I change it to a rhino? Or a drop pod? Maybe a vindicator? ( the land raider kinda goes out of budget tho)
      Just asking!

    I'm honestly impressed with how accessible that absolutely stunning base is. Whenever I see an awesome diorama I always automatically assume that it took monumentous amounts of work and experience, but the mileage you were able to get from just a few materials and techniques is awesome. I'm thinking that I'm going to create a small diorama like this to memorialize each of my D&D characters once they either die or live to see the end of their journey. Heck, maybe I'll buy a duplicate miniature for the diorama and repaint them so I can have a comparison of how my painting skills have improved.

    A few details you could've added to aid the realism; 1) space marine settled into the snow, the snow around his shoes as he's heavy, but also footprints. 2) Dirt in the snow, the snow is very clean white but noticeably damaged on one side, if he was running around in muddied and blown up dirt, he would trample brown into the snow. 3) The dirt seems very single-coloured too, and although you don't see much of it, I would assume it'd be more littered with little rocks or clumps of varying dirt patternation.
    Extra potential: Although you painted the light hitting the marine, the groundwork doesn't share the same lighting details (being more blue and yellow snow), however, if you had painted the marine without lighting on his armour, and coated or applied a reflective layer, then you can use a real light source and darkened covering/dark room, to create that dynamic lighting, which will realistically hit the model. Painting models to be responsive to real-world light and not have their details baked on is a good touch of extra realism. Image an almost mirror-like gun detail, but instead of painting in a fake reflection, you take some strong mirror-quality paint and apply that. Suddenly the gun now reflects the real-world elements a bit.

  • @lordchipmonk1
    @lordchipmonk1 2 года назад +1

    Nice diorama, well done. :)
    I got a *slightly* different vibe from it compared with what you describe. You see, I remember Macragge. I remember (some of) the lore, the box sets, the White Dwarf battle report and the events in my local GW store. If you'll indulge me, this is the story that unfolded in my head as I was watching you put this piece together.
    So, I see your diorama not as an alternate take on the artwork, but more a continuation of it. You can read about the whole battle for Macragge elsewhere on the internet. Suffice to say, the Ultramarine 1st company was given the task of defending the Northern polar fortress when Hive Fleet Behemoth struck. Wave after wave of the aliens were blasted back, but ultimately the 'nids gained entry and the fight degraded to a series of cramped tunnel fights. Contact was lost with the fortress.
    A relief force subsequently arrives at the fortress. They are assualted by some remaining bugs, but fight their way through and find the fortress choked with the bodies. The first company has been killed to a man. Captain Invictus is found where he made is last stand with the remains of his command in the depths of the fortress. Zenos corpses choke the corridors for floors and floors. The task of clearing them is considerable. The numbers of the first company won't be replaced for over a century.
    So, what about our protagonist? Well, his yellow/gold trim picks him out as a member of the 2nd company. This means he wasn't there. Oh sure, he may well have been doing something important, but when the first company made their last stand, when they were totally wiped out, when his comrades fought one of the most heroic actions in imperial history, he wasn't there.
    Survivor's guilt.
    I see this painting depicting the scene shortly after this. The clean up process. The back of the Tyranid invasion is broken, but there are still nids to root out and destroy. Our protagonist is part of this force. Cleanly and efficiently he works to destroy the last remains of that blasted host. Still, the guilt remains. He survives while they died.
    He cannot bring them life.
    He cannot bring them justice.
    But by the God Emperor, he can bring them vengeance.
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    So, what for the diorama?
    Well, the centuries pass and The Ultramarines' Primarch is returned to them. Our protagonist is one of the first to volunteer to step over the rubicon and don the Mk. X armour. Along with these events (a cause for rejoicing, surely?) however a dark force rises. One of the Dreaded Daemon Primarchs emerges from the warp to attack the Ultramarines. Once more, the fight for Macragge is fierce. We meet our protagonist as he stalks through the snow, hunting for heretics and traitors. As he reloads his bolt rifle however, he comes across a crater. An explosion has thrown up detritus left berried under the ice for hundreds of years. Preserved pieces of tyranid and human alike, mingled together. Memories flood back. This time will be different. This time, he *will* be there.
    In memory of the fallen, and to atone for his own perceived sins, he seeks to cleanse Ultramar once more of its invaders.
    For honour.
    For glory.
    For Macragge.

Even though I can paint excellent I have hit a hard places and I beat myself up and nit pick every little detail till I can't stand it. What you said it's better to be brave and just do it and learn from the process even if it doesn't match the vision you originally have. Also to be content with your work but always seeking improvements and to enjoy the journey. I just feel I've set bar so high and when I don't meet those expectations I have for myself it brings me low but you have re open my eyes. You can't learn and improve if you don't do. Also thank you to squdmar if you read these your wet palette work has really help me to put out some very beautiful pieces and help me advance my skills even further then I thought possible.

  • @Smilomaniac
    @Smilomaniac 5 лет назад +67

    You should've painted the back drop first and then the smurf, to try and get a feel for the same rough approach. Ironically it probably would've been more work to paint him that way, but it would also have made you bolder in your approach.
    I think you did a good job, the whole thing is evocative.
    My favourite is the tundra/clear sky, I think the contrast of a nice day and a bloodbath is a little bit disturbing and goes a long way to provoke some thoughts.

      100% agree with you, one thing that comes to mind for me is the 9/11 attacks back in 2001,and how blue the sky was.
      I always found the combination of a nice day with the chaos that happened eerie.

    Hi Bret! I know I'm very late to the party, but I wanted to make a recommendation, to be read with your new eyes from today looking back at the past, I guess?
    You've spotted the light coming from behind to his left.
    The reason you chose the backdrop is, to me, in part because the strokes are in the direction of the light (and then in part because the bleakness fits the story). That's what I'm sensitive to, anyway.
    So one reco: once you know the light comes from behind-left, zenithal that way and take a picture without allowing yourself to add the usual "more light in the face to attract attention" etc. That'll help a lot with the lighter colors placement. ;)
    Just a thought!
    Oh, and a note that you've gotten me to make an inventory of all the (unpainted) minis I have going about the house to risk the roulette one of these days... Thanks! :-) I really hope to pick up the nerves to try it when my on-going project dulls out a bit.
    Cheers.

    I was expecting the marine surrounded 5000 Tyranids around him. with a huge nuke under his feet with a timer with enough time on the clock to use all the ammo left in his gun and extra clips. while he is fighting in a puddle of his own blood. giving the diorama a golden name plate: "Challenge Accepted!"

    A great idea to try recreating a scene from a cool piece of art. I especially liked the base and the weathering on the Marine's legs. This inspired me to consider making a diorama of sorts as a backdrop to take photos of my painted D&D miniatures on. City, forest, mountain... 🤔

  • @J3rs3yM1k3
    @J3rs3yM1k3 5 лет назад

    The figure and the painting are both right handed. In the painting, the marine is holding the gun by the pistol grip, in his right hand. On the mini, he's holding the gun farther up, away from the trigger, right where you would put your left hand if you are right handed. The difference in the two is the choice of hand that's being used to load the magazine, which is probably dictated by where he stores his magazine reserves, right side or left side. Great paint job!
