Goobertown has not only been a nice source of hobby inspiration and motivation, but a good positive place to chill that has helped my mental health a lot during this last year that has been so brutal for so many. I have 6 or so various hobby projects that seem to have all slowed down and fallen by the wayside, and I feel motivated to try and jump start them and view the remaining covid times as a hobby opportunity instead of just counting down the days until post-vaccine times. It's good to look forward to the light at the end of the tunnel, but thank you for reminding me to look out for positive opportunities in the journey along the way and live a little happier in the moment as well.

    Hi Brent. If I might offer you some constructive advice on why the cobblestones might seem a little off - I think by doing it the way you are, the bricks become quite "pillowy". That is, by using a blade to make the mortar lines, the bricks edges curve in. I understand you don't like resin bases or rollers, and that you like the weight of the milliput, so my advice would be to make individual bricks from milliput (make a little, long cuboid "mould"; push in the milliput; cut out little rectangular bricks *roughly* same thickne). This way, you get the weight - and the inevitable little discrepancies in brick thickness and ggap between brick will mean a much more organic, realistic look.
    It would of course be even easier to do this with foam! And you could add a heavy steel washer to the bottom for extra weight! But, milliput would totally work too :)

    • @GoobertownHobbies
      @GoobertownHobbies  3 года назад +1

      I think you're right. There's some bolt action players around here that make piles of loose bricks as terrain, I should figure out how they make em. Otherwise I need to up my skills so the bricks don't get quite so round...

    Hi Brent, i just wanted to leave a comment for you as recently you’ve really helped me out a lot. This might be a long but it’s kind of a big thank you for what you do, and how much you’ve helped me grow as a painter.
    At the start of this year before the pandemic my love for warhammer returned, after 8 years I finally wanted to get back into the hobby! And I did! The journey from then to now has been great, I’ve learnt to take care of my brushes, how to thin my paints and different techniques such as dry brushing or edge highlighting. I’m definitely not talented but I am proud of what I’m able to do.
    For the the last few months I’ve been on a small break whilst I wait to afford some new paints and brushes and other supplies but I’ve finally gotten those supplies! Mentally things have been hard but I took things easy and I made sure to play your videos whilst I painted, you’ve really helped me to grow my confidence and to try new things. It’s okay if my work isn’t like someone else’s, it’s mine and as long as I’m proud of it then that’s all that matters. I’ll keep learning and trying my best to improve! But your videos were a great help to me, I had trouble dealing with the anxiety and fear of messing up for a while so I want to thank you for being a calming voice in my ear whilst I paint my minis.
    Today was an important day for me especially, I’ve been dealing with a lot of anxiety recently from starting a new job and finally having the capability to paint again. Your soothing videos really helped ease the anxiety however, today I took it easy and slow and just painted what I loved. I took inspiration from your video on how to choose colours, and used my space marines as a little testing ground I guess. I don’t have much love for space marines but I do want to use them, so today I painted one up and I just felt pride at what I accomplished. Your videos continue to be a great help to me and many others and I’m so thankful for every thing you do.
    I’ve recently ordered some howling banshees and Incubi which I can’t wait to paint! Although I still need to figure out what colours speak to me most! Right now I thought a mix of dark red and gold would be perfect whilst utilising some wonderful tesseract green for any glowing areas or eyes! I’m also going to try paint some white too! As last time sadly didn’t go so well.
    Anyway away from that tangent I just want you to know that what you do is inspiring to me beyond what I can describe, it’s a sense of calming and happiness. That everything will be okay and I shouldn’t judge myself too harshly. Thank you Brent, for your amazing content and your willingness to help out other painters and teach new things.
    P.S I’m not sure if this was very coherent or if it was fine! But I hope I got the message across. Again thank you Brent you really are a much needed part of this community who I’m very grateful for.

    Old sprue can easily be chopped up to use as bricks and other detritus! As for spacing, I recommend cutting a piece of cardstock or plasticard to your desired width, then you can do your first cobblestone line in the middle of the base, and use it to space out the brick rows in either direction. If you use plasticard you can even then use that to do the perpendicular brick hatching.

  • @AzraelThanatos
    @AzraelThanatos 3 года назад

    For the bases, if you don't like rollers, you might take a look at stamps instead. They tend to be a pretty good option for things like bricks where it's a pattern.
    You might also consider things like curb, drains, and sewer grates in addition to or instead of things piled onto the bases with some of them. Curbs are relatively easy, take a piece of cereal box card and cut it to the basic shape you want it to have and glue it on, using that as a place to build the sidewalk and curb up above the street level that you'd do as normal.

    Hi Brent! About you not liking the current bases, there is a very similar way to do them, that might just be different enough.
    Rolling out a big sheet of milliput over a sturdy flat surface covered with clingfilm wrap (that stuff used in the kitchen to cover left-over food before stuffing it in the fridge, krimpfolie, in case you Dutch is better than my English) then put the texture you like on there. (Might also help with the scale continuity). Leave it to dry overnight, peel it off the foil and break it apart into irregular shapes. Then glue these broken shapes onto the bases, to make them less uniform. This makes their conquered city look a lot more chaotic and broken, and it's easy to fill up the uncovered parts of the bases with rocks, rubble and texture paste to complete the things.
    This could mix well with the current bases too. Not everyone happens to walk on a broken or pristine piece of road at the exact same time anyway.

    If you have a single or few big centerpiece models it'd be really cool to put a shattered wall that the model is stepping over into the town, but itd probably have to be a pretty big model to have space
