I started measuring my time for my 40k Harlequin army and it takes me around 3-5 hours per model. I once sat down with my friends for a Discord paint session and while I was busy just getting the base coat right they were finishing full batches. It was a bit disheartening to say the least. I think when it comes down to the question how much time you should invest in your minis you need to distinguish whether you want good looking models or a painted army. Because even though I have one of the most elite, low count army in the game, I'm beginning to get tired of painting the same paint scheme over and over again. I couldn't fathom painting 120 guardsmen to the same standard. I'm definitely not the type to sacrifice on quality though. After all I take big joy from the feeling of accomplishment of watching my minis on the shelf. So one lesson I take from this is to focus on small skimish type games for my next project or on single models entirely.
Harlequin's definitely have a reputation for taking a while to paint! I bet they're looking cool though, and so few people have harlequin's, so that's awesome, keep goin! :-)

Now, I relegate myself to painting as best I can so I can be proud of the finished models and just keep a minimum of 1-2 hrs of painting a day and for me I found that wasn't fast, but satisfying (and also exhausting when you choose to have Space Orks and Imperial Guard as your two main armies. Hey Brent, I just wanted to stop by and say your videos are awesome! I'm super grateful for the meditative educational nature of each of your videos and it helped me paint several minis. You also introduced me to Titan Forge so now I and my 3d printer are very, incredibly happy. Keep up the content man!
Great video about experimenting with the process and giving oneself permission to make new choices and mistakes; and the push to keep learning. Thanks!
(These look great Brent, I love the *pop*!) I very deliberately decided to paint my army in sub assembly because of the sheer amount of units I want paint. It's to save time and not swap paints every two minutes. It's fairly obvious that if you're painting grunts, you want to cut back on the details, if nothing else for your own sanity and to avoid burnout. Not so much for a perfectionist and this is where you need to let go and not paint that bolter or rifle in sixteen colors and blended NMM effects. Just block in the colors and wash it. You should also respect what it is you buy. There's been a lot of 'shame collection' videos recently and there are people who have too much money to spend and don't appreciate what they've hidden away. For me something like a character model or an expensive single model, like a Primaris Chaplain, is something precious and special (even if they're monopose and all look the same). You should treat something like that with a modicum of respect and give it the paint job it deserves. edit; My favourite model is the pipe smoking alchemist, he has so much character to him! The dark elf you painted is missing warmth in the armor and it'll probably take a little bit of blending rather than a wash.
Agreed! For a nice/ expensive model I'll always want to give those the time they deserve. Some of these mage sculpts are awesome and deserve a 'real' paintjob, but since they're cheap 3d prints I don't feel so bad about cranking out a quick copy first :-)
This video paired well with one of Miniac's latest videos about changing his painting process so he could enjoy painting more and have more fun. At the end of the day for the majority of the people in the hobby that's probably the most important thing. Just also important to realize that challenging yourself, while sometimes scary, can be really fun too! Also while I'm sure there's more to be done on all the models you painted, I thought all the faces on the human characters looked good, and really elevates the model.
I’ve had similar thoughts when painting, so I’m glad to have come across this video. Exploring different styles usually come to me when I feel I don’t have anything to lose, including time or paint resources. May the spirit of Sam Lenz be with all our blending attempts!
I really like how your videos are often more "musing about hobbying while some hobbying goes on in the background". Very relaxing and interesting, definitely provokes my thoughts. I also like how you bring up how you are willing to just "go for it" without planning too much, and are willing to simply redo things or change colors midway through. I've previously had a more perfectionist mindset when painting (I must get it right the first time!), but I've been hearing your voice in my head when I realize I don't like something, and I've gone through with changing it. I'm in the middle of my biggest project ever (the older Leman Russ model) and have had to make many do-overs. Magnetizing it is difficult, and at one point I had put two layers of basecoat down only to realize I didn't like the color -- so without stopping to plan, I made a decision to mix some paints and achieve the perfect color. Two more basecoats and while it looks very different than my original plan, I love it! Thanks for your efforts and passion. :)
(And whenever something looks pretty good, but not perfect, I hear in my mind in your voice, "But that's ok. There's a lot of other minis to paint, and this one looks good enough to play with.")
First of all, great vid and thumbs up for tackling that topic! It's not an easy topic in a world of Instagram were you can easily see a few compition winning models each day! As you said, it totally depends on the goal with the mini. At least that's my point of view on the matter over quantitiy vs. quality. Usually I take way more time on my 40k minis as I know, that at some time, each one could be seen as a single model. Same, if not even more so, is true for my character models. On the other hand, my Kings of War army, which is mulitbased, stops right at the wash stage for the majority of the models. If I feel like it, I pick out a few more details on the guys in the front row, but as there are quite a lot of minis cramped on a comparatively small base, the overall look and feel is determined by all minis as a whole and not by the single pouch on guy 13 in the 3rd row :) Also it's a lot more satisfing to play a rank'n'flank game with fully painted, crowded bases :D
Thank you for your grounded and humble interpretations! The mini painting game can be very intimidating for beginners (like me), but your encouraging style helps my perfectionist brain push on in my own works!
Brent - Another fabulous video! I really admire your attention to detail and very relaxed approach. You inspire me to be better, and I've learned a lot from watching you. My oldest son is interested in beginning the hobby, and your channel was the first one I recommended. Your voice is awesome! You should tell one of those "Calm" app sleep stories. ; )
This video coming out while I was procrastinating taking a shower just made my day, thanks goobertown hobbies first you get me into the hobby now you help me procrastinate!!!
I've been painting models in a 3-4 hour time window, just to finish up some models for games. It's so liberating to allow yourself to call something done when it's tabletop standard with a little flair, and move onto the next model the next day.
I got to admit that I am seeing how these are painting and thinking seriously about how I would go about painting some of my mini figures. I struggle with patience at times but I also can panic and seriously worry about making a bad job too. This has been a great video
Great video. Myself, like many I believe, started with $150 GW boxed games of 50 miniatures. This was so overwhelming because I also started by trying to match the box art. This left me playing the game for 1-2 years with mostly grey plastic or even worse, never playing the game for 2 years while I fell in and out of the struggle of painting everything in the box before I ever played the game. (eventually finding out that I had put 100's of hours into painting a game that I didnt even know if I liked!) Very recently with my 4th boxed game I am starting to really see the benefit of having some paint on a model vs none or, a quick and dirty paint job vs no paint job or no game. It's taken about 4 years, but it's starting to click.
Whoa! that's pretty insightful actually, lots of folks DO start with giant boxes and are forced to look at that pretty art... That might be the root of a lot of our hobby psychosis! Thanks for watchin, and glad to hear that you're starting to crank out more painted models, keep it up! :-)
Personally I like having a lot of minis painted, but I do have that favorite one i spend 50+ hours on, trying to make it as close to perfect as i humanly can.
Good stuff - great to see them all painted up. I signed up because of your other video introduction to Titan Forge and the files are downloading now. Only hiccup is I still have settled on which 3D Printer to buy - just going to have to bite the bullet and buy one. Anyway - enjoyed the videos, keep them coming!
Absolutely in love with the colour choice on the eygptian style mage with the scimitar, it actually killed my choice paralysis with a similar mini at my desk. Great Video!
Great tips! great video. And really like the look of a lot of those minis. as a set they really look great too. There's a happy shelf somewhere in your house.
I dont even know how I found your channel Brent, but damn.. its a love at a first sight. hahaha... Im a freelancer and still struggle for life, obviously dont have that much money but you makes me really love minis more. I've been interested in boardgame, tabletop and such for some years now. in fact, I actually have a little background about it in my childhood. your really motivate me to get and paint my first minis. Im saving for it and hope can start early next year. keep on Brent, we love you!
Totally awesome, love your philosophy. I'm working my way through a bunch of minis so I can do different encounters in frostgrave. Quantity is at the forefront so I have a whole bunch. But I spend much more time on the warband itself.
Some night the artistic juices flow and then other nights it s back to boring stuff, like washes - it's all down to mood swings I find Brent and I do Chaos and Space Wolves/Ravens and Regal Ravens (My own creation). Cheers for the insight into the world of imagination.
Thumbs up for Vallejo purple! I am also hyped with it. Good for clothes, but also for mixing with skin tones and browns and have fast interesting shadows
14:30 Maybe you could try to apply a dark wash allover the fur and then dry brush with the same colour that you used for the basecoat. And also strengthen the edge highlight on the horns. Oh and the tiger stripes look pretty decent by the way ! You might not be happy with how this model look but at least you learned how to paint tiger stripes and that's what really matter: improving your skills (that's like half the fun of painting minis)
Wow Brent, if you hadn't told me these were 3d printed I never would have known. It's amazing how far 3d printing has come. Good to know that you can strip them too, so cool.
For me 10 hours is a healthy time frame / limit on a normal 28mm human sized figure. It's enough time to pick something new to try or work on improving a skill but still gett the figure done. You have to keep the process joyful and not get burned out. Thanks for keeping youtube joyful, love your vids!
Hey, i've watched a lot of vids from your channel, and i finally started my first wet palette mini xD Thanks for your tutorials, they're very helpful for me.
Nice video. I really like the Yeti, it looks amazing. The Djinn is very nice too. I think you should spend some more time on these models. They look good but deserve more time because I think they will all look great (even the tiger)
You're so inspiring. I have hard with my first project. I am a perfectionist so if result is not as good as I imagined I am frustrated. Your advices looses my own chains a bit. I'm going to hoop into saddle back in! Thanks!
I've gone to both extremes: once I painted around 8-10 minis in one evening and on several occasions I've taken multiple days to finish one. Honestly, I'm not sure where my happy medium is because I don't approach every project the same way; it winds up being a somewhat complex equation of how interested I am in painting a specific miniature, how much I want to experiment and how long I feel I need to take before I can declare a section or an entire miniature finished.
I am always so happy to listen to your insights on the hobby. You always seem to remind us all that its okay to not always paint display level minis and remind ourselves to just enjoy the hobby and not overstress it. Ithink showing that tiger will actually go a longer way mentally to some than one might think when it comes to getting minis done rather than trying so hard to compete. If any of that made sense xD Keep up the good work Brent!
For me, I realized was doing little to no painting because I was so hard on myself to get it "perfect". It would take me a week or two for one unit, which would burn me on painting for awhile. However, once I started doing simpler paint jobs and simple bases, I realized I was happy making sure there wasn't bleed over and some basic highlights. The main help for this was my own frustrations, but also coming across your chill approach and Uncle Atom's videos on the similar subject. Now I'm painting up my game pieces to the point they have some character, but I'm still able to punch through a unit or a warband/posse for smaller wargames like Pulp Alley, Dracula's America, etc.
My fastest was like 30 mins on a small lotr model and like 8 hours on my first chaos rider om juggernaut. All down to feel and experience but helps not too get to precious about it. Got to add oh my god those wings, simply amazing.
This is so relaxing and satisfying to watch- it makes me want to pick up a paint brush! Kudos to you, although you worked fast you achieved smooth creamy looking colour on all the minis - very impressed. And wow, the painted minis highlight just how **dynamic** those Titan Forge minis look... I want a set! Thanks Brent, keep the videos coming, they are so good. P.S. On the Yeti think about Polar-bear fur; although it's white there are underlying grey-brown, even blue, tones. You could wash the fur with a darker tone, do a heavy then light drybrush, then highlight. (Or even wash once with brown, drybrush, then a light wash of another tone, like blue, before final drybrushing). Perhaps put some dirt and mud up it's legs, stick on some foliage (stuck in it's fur), throw a broken-tree on the base. Or here's a really bold one; put a tree/rock on the base, airbrush the shadow of the tree/rock onto the Yeti, and airbrush some lighter tones on one side to give sunlight effect.
This video popped up at just the right time. Next week I start a new project. Painting a Drunagor all-in set, with a goal of 15 minutes per mini average, or all 150ish in under 40 hours. The plan is 3-tone zenithal (black/bone or grey/white) > assembly line, mass Speedpaints basecoats > drybrush highlights > mass quick spray varnish (maybe) > wash and/or extra touchups > final mass varnish > done EDIT:90 minutes to 2 hours to get a base coat you were happy with... eeesh. Normally if a mini takes me more than 90 minutes to fully complete I'm angry about how much time I'm wasting on it.
I love this. As a new painter it's great to see these more simple techniques and how far they can go. Also I get my 3D printer in a month and can't wait to print titan forge minis!!!
There is never too long to paint a mini I could sit perfecting blends until my hair is as long and luscious as Brent's.

@@GoobertownHobbies Just an idea: mount two brushes on a compass and paint both pupils at the same time, they'll end up parallel.

Hey thanks! Scott and I have done this a few times now where we've accidentally made similar videos in our own way, it's always fun when that happens.
Thank you so much for this video I was starting to procrastinate but a goobertown video always makes me want to paint
Wooo, you got this! :-)
Wow you have really improved your painting skills from your first video until now. Inspiring 👏👏
I’ve had similar thoughts when painting, so I’m glad to have come across this video. Exploring different styles usually come to me when I feel I don’t have anything to lose, including time or paint resources. May the spirit of Sam Lenz be with all our blending attempts!
And may his spirit be with you too, friend :-)
An interesting point, always nice to listen to your thoughts on the hobby! Congrats on the set that you helped design!
If I feel like it, I pick out a few more details on the guys in the front row, but as there are quite a lot of minis cramped on a comparatively small base, the overall look and feel is determined by all minis as a whole and not by the single pouch on guy 13 in the 3rd row :)
Also it's a lot more satisfing to play a rank'n'flank game with fully painted, crowded bases :D
rank 'n flank put so many hours of painting in such a small area :-)
Happy to help! :-)
This was a great perspective video. I like covering these topics so early in the painting part of the hobby for me.
I’m fairly new to the hobby and your channel has helped me so much, thank you 🙏
There’s always that one random mini that isn’t super great but you still spend 50h on it for no reason.
I've been painting models in a 3-4 hour time window, just to finish up some models for games. It's so liberating to allow yourself to call something done when it's tabletop standard with a little flair, and move onto the next model the next day.
nice! yeah 3-4 hours for a human sized mini is right about where I fall too :-)
I got to admit that I am seeing how these are painting and thinking seriously about how I would go about painting some of my mini figures.
(eventually finding out that I had put 100's of hours into painting a game that I didnt even know if I liked!)
Very recently with my 4th boxed game I am starting to really see the benefit of having some paint on a model vs none or, a quick and dirty paint job vs no paint job or no game.
Awesome paint job
Personally I like having a lot of minis painted, but I do have that favorite one i spend 50+ hours on, trying to make it as close to perfect as i humanly can.
Good stuff - great to see them all painted up. I signed up because of your other video introduction to Titan Forge and the files are downloading now. Only hiccup is I still have settled on which 3D Printer to buy - just going to have to bite the bullet and buy one. Anyway - enjoyed the videos, keep them coming!
Nice! I've been testing out a few printers, and this generation of resin printers has a ton of similarities. Good luck and have fun :-)
Thanks! Yup, that shelf is powering up quite nicely :-)
When your Master tells you to stop playing with swords or "you'll poke your eye out"... dammit you listen!
;-)
Nice! Frostgrave seems like such an awesome setting to paint minis for, have fun with it :-)
Some night the artistic juices flow and then other nights it s back to boring stuff, like washes - it's all down to mood swings I find Brent and I do Chaos and Space Wolves/Ravens and Regal Ravens (My own creation). Cheers for the insight into the world of imagination.
Thumbs up for Vallejo purple! I am also hyped with it. Good for clothes, but also for mixing with skin tones and browns and have fast interesting shadows
Just printed the sorceress myself. Your green paint scheme is SO awesome
Have fun with the sorceress!!!
Hey thanks for the advice! I needed the guidance on both of those :-)
Wow Brent, if you hadn't told me these were 3d printed I never would have known. It's amazing how far 3d printing has come. Good to know that you can strip them too, so cool.
Thanks, great content as always!
Practice practice practice. Thanks for the video Brent. That reminds me I need to get my garage cleaned up so I can start airbrushing again
YAY!!! Brent has a new vid.
For me 10 hours is a healthy time frame / limit on a normal 28mm human sized figure. It's enough time to pick something new to try or work on improving a skill but still gett the figure done. You have to keep the process joyful and not get burned out. Thanks for keeping youtube joyful, love your vids!
Hey, i've watched a lot of vids from your channel, and i finally started my first wet palette mini xD Thanks for your tutorials, they're very helpful for me.
nice! :-)
@@GoobertownHobbies I make a Video about it. I know i'm not the biggest player on YT (definitely not) But can i show you the result when i'm finished?
Just poicked up the set to print, looking forward to playing with these, thanks for the code btw.
Just got this recommended. Already subscribed.
No year given for when the discount runs out. Get ordering.
Nice video. I really like the Yeti, it looks amazing. The Djinn is very nice too. I think you should spend some more time on these models. They look good but deserve more time because I think they will all look great (even the tiger)
I'm slow but I'm pretty new so it's all learning for me right now. Great video and good luck with the bubbles and meniscus painting too :)
OH DUDE! Vallejo Purple is a staple of mine too. Such a good paint.
This makes me excited to paint my 1995 egrimm van horstmann and 5th edition chaos warriors. Love your tutorials by the way.
I understand you, Brent :-)
Good question. Something about my own hobbying that has been on my mind recently.
I hadn't thought about polar bears, that's a great point. Obviously I have a few more yetis here on my desk, I'm gonna have to give that a try! :-)
This video popped up at just the right time. Next week I start a new project. Painting a Drunagor all-in set, with a goal of 15 minutes per mini average, or all 150ish in under 40 hours.
The plan is 3-tone zenithal (black/bone or grey/white) > assembly line, mass Speedpaints basecoats > drybrush highlights > mass quick spray varnish (maybe) > wash and/or extra touchups > final mass varnish > done
EDIT:90 minutes to 2 hours to get a base coat you were happy with... eeesh. Normally if a mini takes me more than 90 minutes to fully complete I'm angry about how much time I'm wasting on it.
What a thought-provoking video. Thank you!!!
I love this. As a new painter it's great to see these more simple techniques and how far they can go. Also I get my 3D printer in a month and can't wait to print titan forge minis!!!
