Hey Angie! you did a great job of doing your own hair. I did hear your cry for help with the toner! So as a licensed stylist watching you I would recommend that you squeeze the toner contents into the color bowl and apply with the brush too and have a wide tooth comb to pull it through that will be easier love! and toner is still color so I would wear gloves. And reading through the comments and my thoughts while watching you were, if I may suggest for the highlight application to do 2 mixtures and start at the bottom / underneath and do the top last and then it can all be off your face. so whether you use 1 packet or 2 mix up a batch and do half the head of what you plan to touch up and start at the neck and then mix a fresh batch when doing the top. this way you can apply in a way that will stay off your face and have less chance of what we call bleeding through or transfer on to other hair. Just wanted to support you in your at home efforts 🙏 keep up the great videos! 💖 Sonia

leila Well as a stylist that has been doing my own hair for practically all my career (20 years) it just takes practise and it is definitely something to get used to looking in the mirror backwards! I was inspired to look at their website and the instruction videos and support system to help you at home with a personal colorist is impressive. As a colorist looking to support my own clients and anyone else wanting to do their hair at home and I am in Canada so we have less options this company is filling a need and doing it well with regular color. Meaning it still is ammonia and ppd so not for those of us that have gone holistic of have allergies its not an option. But they seem to have a fabulous customer experience from what I can tell. Of course go with your gut instinct on what to do but I thought I’d share what I discovered when researching them just now. I am going to be offering 1-1 Zoom appointments for walking through cutting bangs and the sides of the hair or other drive you nuts bits because I just think its the right thing to do for supporting my clients or anyone who wants to cut their own hair while in quarantine and still feel good about themselves.

The Zen Room & Studio If you know of any colors that doesn’t have any PPD, resorcinol or ammonia please please let me know. I have terrible allergies and so I have been using henna and indigo. Which makes my hair fabulous but it’s a messy pain. I tried Maddison Reed. I don’t really like it. I wish companies would get on board and understand these chemicals are terrible for you. I see some Asian brands are free from these chemicals. Maybe I’ll give them a go. Thank you

Tracy Yes I do know of professional brands that are free from them and thats what I use on my clients but right now none of those companies have anything for retailing for home use for clients to do safely at home. I am not sure where you are located and if grey coverage is what you need? I can help you navigate to perhaps finding a stylist that uses the same products near you. Some are making kits for pick up and drop off but it all just depends on laws of where you are in the world. Happy to keep replying here in the event our conversation is helpful to others also or you can dm on Instagram if you prefer to be more private since youtube took away messaging 🤦‍♀️😃

Another good tip to fading or getting a blurred highlight into the root area is a take a toothbrush (or comb but I like a toothbrush) and gently tease at the top of where you're going to be placing the highlight and also I sometimes will put a little bit of conditioner there to get a more gradient highlight. Hope this helps someone!

I have been doing my own highlights for probably 10 years now. I have also used the Loreal highlighting kits, Frost and Glow, and Frost and Design. I am partial to the Frost and Glow one, but the fact that they have the cap is the reason I started doing my own hair. Most salons use foil and I really dislike foil. On top of that I save a TON of money doing my own hair instead of paying a salon for cut and highlights with long hair. Not sure if you read these comments Angie, but I recommend you try the cap at least once. Even when I get my hair cut at a salon I ALWAYS get compliments about my highlights. The hairstylists generally don't like that I used a box highlighting kit, but they can't deny how pretty it looks. I had to have my daughters help me with the back many years ago, but now I have gotten good with doing it myself. Love, love, love these videos! Thanks for keeping us all looking beautiful over 50!

You do a great job, Angie! My mom is 74 and she's been home dyeing her hair since her 40s. She cuts it as well (between shoulder & arm pit). Before that I was younger and she had to take me to the salon anyway. When I became a teen I sort of experimented myself, and cut my hair myself, and so she didn't want to go for just herself. She's become a real expert over the years. She is fully gray/white now and keeps it a light to mid-tone blonde every 3/4 months; it lifts after about the 2 month cycle and her roots growing in isn't even that obvious (not at all). I no longer dye my hair. I have wavy/curly over the butt length hair (classic length) and I only have a sprinkling of white throughout; it totally suits me and I don't think I'll be dyeing my hair anytime soon (it's nice 'n easy). LOL!

For anyone wanting to try this at home, just know that if you like Angie's colour, ordering her shade won't necessarily give you the same colour result, as it all depends on YOUR own hair - the base tone, underlying tones, amount of greys, even the texture; will all impact the individual colour result.

As i have gotten older i do need to do my roots every 4 Weeks cause of the greys. Greys are not in. Never ever* ill see real pretty woman with great skin 50 going full on grey. They say it takes off 10 or more years u look younger. One day when ur 80 ok go grey but try and look ur best because ur feel sexier. Ur feel younger and who doesnt want that? I no people will say that many look good with salt pepper hair? No no no why look so oldier when u dont have to? Coloring ur own hair makes u feel in control and brings the confidence back that we get when we feel better about ourselves.

you only do few strands at a time. Next time few more and so on. Eventually it would be a breeze. prepare very little solution for just few strands. I use Revlon Frost & Glow, different shades wich I alternate.

@@annasmith5676 What do you do when it starts to grow out? How do you touch it up?

    • @annasmith5676
      @annasmith5676 4 года назад +15

@@roger12393ok, it works like this: each time you to wash your hair, you prepare a mix, not more than 1 tsp, then select few, most dark strands (in the beginning, all your hair will be dark at roots), you apply the mix to each strand starting from the root, and if the end of the strand is already colored you can cover the dark portion only. start with very "fine" strands, meaning very few hairs in a strand, but not uniform strands. So one strand will be a bit thicker than another. in 2-3 days you repeat the process selecting different strands and so on until your entire head will look like sun kissed. Vary holding time as well. One "session" you hold it 45 min, another 30 or 1 hour-this will give you different shades. Since strands are randomly selected, have various shades and thickness, you won't have demarkation lines anymore. Therefore you continue this process indefinitely: color few strands each time you wash your hair. Eventually you will see which side of your head needs touch up and work on that side. Your hair would remain nicely blended with colored and dark strands. It took me awhile to figure out how to color hair on the back of my head. I now collect front and side hair in mini pony tails and randomly, blindly select hair on the my back and apply the mix. if you hair is long, just lift the strand up and you will see if it needs coloring. Eventually hair on your back would be nicely highlighted. Just start with very few hair strand, it will look natural and nicely blended. The key here is patience. I personally don't like dark "underneath" hair, so I work all hair, but started with hair on top. You can also buy 2 different shades of the product and alternate it.

Hi Angie, greetings from New Zealand. I've been doing my colour at home for a few years now. As you do, I do the roots one day and the highlights the next. I use a L"Oreal kit too but last time I used the cap and pulled strands of hair through. Well I must say I was thrilled with the results and when my hubby came home he thought I'd been to the salon. Last time I had my hair cut my stylist couldn't believe how nice my colour and streaks were, she was quite amazed. I think home colours have gotten a lot more advanced over time. As you may have heard NZ is in a strict lockdown and we can't order non essential items through the post or couriers, so things like hair dye are only available from local supermarkets (and ours is pretty limited). Cheers and stay safe and thanks for your continuing entertaining content!

It's a little tedious and difficult if you're putting on highlights fpr the first time but retouch would be very easy. I just used that same highlighting kit last night and I am generally happy with the results, I mostly got very pretty subtle results, I like them to just look natural, like the sun did it, so I do very small little pieces, and don't want them to be too light. I mostly did get the look I wanted, a couple places didn't lift enough, and I will have to go back in to fix, I am not sure if I didn't let those pieces process long enough, or if they dried too quickly. When I do the freehand highlights, I do struggle with them drying out...but honestly it was probably user error. I had a terrible experience at the salon one time and was over processed to platinum, and so much breakage, that I tend to get panicky....but my hair felt great after using this kit, no breakage, still looks healthy. I like that it includes a toner, but suggest it be applied in shower and hair wrapped before getting out, it was so watery and ended up dripping and it does stain surfaces....I will be trying to remove those stains today with some bleach. I also tried esalon for the first time for my base color, and the color was beautiful..good communication and I felt that they were very attentive to my concerns and really wanted me to get the color that I wanted. I only received one bottle of color though, my colorist said that I didn't need to pull the color through my ends and sent instructions for freshening them up and blending the color, it worked perfectly, the only issue I had was that I didn't have quite enough to super saturate my roots, so I didn't get complete grey coverage. I always use 2 boxes of drugstore color no matter what I am doing, and think I do need to adjust my order for the future, but I am generally super happy with the product and detailed directions. Thank you for sharing all your tips with us!

Gosh the things we women have to do. I just spent 2 hours struggling to colour my greys. I will then spend another 2 hours hi lighting my hair tomorrow. Then there is the shaving the exfoliating the moisterizing the fake tanning the face care the make up....on and on. My husband cut his own hair yesterday and shaved. Took all of 5 mins. 😞😞🤔🤔

Life is easier if you cut out as much beauty duty as possible. I henna my roots every 8 weeks to give it body and condition and trim my ends myself the same day, no exfoliating or shaving, no fake tan, minimal face care routine, makeup only for special occasions. And guess what? my partner still loves me and I still love myself. Time is better spent on more important things IMO
Grey hair is lovely anyway :)

Hi Angie! I love your videos!! One of the things I love most is that a lot of the products that you use/review are affordable things that the average woman can actually get... not $300 face creams. Thanks so much for that!
I have a couple of questions though...
    1. Have you ever tried the L’Oreal Expert Express? It’s the kit that comes with the colour and a highlighter. If you have, what did you think?
    2. I am naturally a dark brunette with lots of salt in my pepper. So after doing my roots, I would like to do a highlight colour but I don’t want to go to blonde… I’m looking for more of a copper/bronze highlight. How would I achieve this? Would I not leave it on quite as long?
Thanks so much, and again… I just love your videos. Of all of the beauty bloggers I follow, you are my favourite. ❤️

Hi Angie I do my own highlights and have for years, but I use a slightly thicker mixture and a comb. It gives very fine highlights rather than the thicker pieces using your method (which is also pretty). I have thick/wavy/curly hair so having some texture is a bit more forgiving than straighter hair for colour placement. I'm 48 and fortunately only have a few white strands around the front (my base colour is a mid blonde) so highlights camoflage them. It saves me a fortune as I used to get them done every eight weeks at a salon a few years ago. I was fortunate to get a trim just before the lockdown and I only get it cut every 12 to 16 weeks anyway (I have long curly hair). I hope this video does give people the confidence to try it at home. My own pandemic try out involved dyeing my own eyebrows, as I usually get threading and a professional tint. I was brave and tried it with success, so although I will still get threading when things normalize I'll be doing my own tinting going forward (just for men beard tint). Be well and best wishes.

You did a great job and a great service to people in need of hair coloring. Seeing the frosting kit brought back memories and one in particular. Way back in the '70's I used to frost my own hair at home. On one occasion I used the set up time to do some housework so after slapping the bleach all over my hair I wrapped hair and cap in plastic wrap and put a shower cap over all that to prevent dripping. In this ridiculous get up I did housework for the required 30 minutes not realizing that I had trapped in my body heat which sped up the bleaching process. When I took all the plastic off I was left with white straw sticking out of the cap!! 😵 Needless to say it took a lot of TLC to repair that damage. 😄 As always you gave us a great video! Stay safe and well. XXOO❤

Good video! Even though I'm in my 60's grey hair is something new for me & just around the front hairline. I must say I was VERY pleased with the e salon results; great product, good price and so convenient. Now I have been highlighting my hair for over 25 yrs. Never happy with the price at the salon I've gotten pretty good at it. BUT I just hate, hate, when I find a product I like and they discontinue it! That's happened to me twice now with Revlon then Clariol. So now I go to Sally's and just buy my powder, developer, & toner, just like the kit you have. It's cheaper and I can mix as much as I want to use. Glad you're happy with the new version, but just throwing that idea out there.

You are giving me the courage to try this, Angie. I just did my roots 2 days ago with Revlon Root Rescue in shade #5. I typically do this 3-4 times in between going to the salon 3-4 times a year. Your hair came out fantastic ! Can I ask what your base color level is ? Mine is about a level 6 or 6.5 in Goldwell color , which is like a medium brown on my grays. So I am wondering if the kit you have would be the right color for me . Thanks !

    Hey, Angie.
Thanks for the updated tutorial. I literally was just saying that I NEED to get brave and try doing my hair, as I just cannot stand it anymore!! And there was your video waiting for me in my notifications! Thanks!
I have to say though, I'm nervous about doing it. I feel like I'm not going to remember how to section it properly, as you did the fast motion as you went through your whole head. Any chance you'd consider uploading the full regular speed version so we can go step by step to it, for us nervous newbies that have never attempted coloring our hair at home!
I was wondering why you decided to not use the hair cap, and did the highlights without it? Also, how does one know whether or not you need to use the toner? Especially if your hair is wet & you don't know what it looks like? Is it ok to dry your hair, & see how it looks & then decide whether you need the toner? Or, must you do it right after your hair is washed out of the highlight dye?

Hey Angie, You have the patience of saint! One suggestion for your followers. If you plan to jump in shower to rinse out your hair anyway, or if you're protecting clothes. Use a jumbo plastic trash bag and cut a hole for your head and also for your arms and just wear it during the color and processing and also like Angie mentioned remove bathroom rugs or they'll get ruined. I use the shower after coloring so last time I just hung out in the buff covered by the bag! LOL! I absolutely dislike doing my own color but lately it's been necessary. The poor hairdressers and salon owners have had to sacrifice all they'd worked for.

You made this look so easy. About 4 weeks ago I ordered blonde brilliance from Sally’s... I have to say highlighting your own hair isn’t for the faint of heart. Unfortunately mine turned out pretty brassy, the toner I got from Sally’s lasted all of 2 shampoos... I generally do my own root touch up with professional color every 3 weeks so I thought highlighting would be a cinch, WRONG! I ended up just coloring over the highlights but now you are making me ponder on whether I should give this kit a try! I’m a glutton for punishment, also it has made me appreciate my stylist so much more!!!!😂
