      I also think so. I just don't believe he even saw himself as a true Sith, not after what Sidious pulled.
      I think with age he understood that there are no real sides. He still hated Obi Wan, which is his whole thing, but in the end he died in Obi Wans arms, which brings their whole lives, everything from the first time they met to the last full circle and its also poetic and beautiful. I think it’s incredibly powerful on so many levels. For Maul’s utter hateful obsession to end so quickly is perfect. It shows how far both characters have come in their lives. When Kenobi left Maul, Kenobi was but the learner. Now Kenobi is the master. That echos poetically. Obi-Wan’s skill and connection to the Force grew powerfully while Maul’s deteriorated because of his hate. That’s why Obi-Wan ended Maul in just 3 skillful and perfect moves. In their Episode I fight, Obi-Wan was fighting his own anger over Qui-Gon’s death. Now you can see he feels pity for Maul: All those years for a lost soul; all those years of anger and hate. Perhaps a bit of guilt for partly causing suffering in another being. Perhaps a bit of relief all that suffering is finally over.

    At the end of the day it was all for nothing. A single slash ended him. All that hatred, all those years of suffering were for nothing. And Maul realised that. He lost everything so the only thing left for him really was to die by the hands of Kenobi.
    And his last words to him...the Clone war, the events up to this point all happened because of Palpatine, he manipulated everyone and ruined everyone's lifes including Kenobi's so I think it's kinda cool that in the end, the two of them actually understood each other's pain in this final meeting. It really makes me feel bad for Maul. Brilliantly written scene.

    • @rosesweetcharlotte
      @rosesweetcharlotte 4 года назад +49

      Yeah, these new Clone Wars episodes aren't helping. They're really painting Maul, though he is a cruel sociopath, as just another victim of Palpatine's. He was used, tortured, and discarded when he was no longer of any used, the same as with Dooku, Grievous, and, yes, even Vader.

    • @juniperrodley9843

    So I came back to watch this after the Season Finale of Clone Wars, just for the beauty of closure this scene brings. Now I’m not a big fan of Rebels, but this brings me to near tears every time I watch it. It’s so meaningful. Everything about this scene hits home for me. Obi-Wan standing ready to protect Luke. Obi-Wan switching from his ROTS stance, to his New Hope stance, to Qui-Gonns. Maul’s final words. The look of pain in Obi-Wans eyes as he closed Mauls for the last time. Maul and Obi-Wan had been archenemies for so long, but in the end, I like to think that they understood one another. If you think about it, they had been the only stable person in each other’s lives, unless you include Yoda for Obi-Wan. They were both basically kids when they fought on Naboo. They lived through two Wars together that spanned their lifetimes. Both of them had lost everything at this point. Maul lost Crimson Dawn, Mandalore, his brother, his place at Sidious’s side. Obi-Wan lost the entire Jedi Order and he lost Anakin to the Emperors temptation. Maul even tried to use his killshot against Qui-Gonn. I don’t think he did that out of arrogance. My guess is that he just wanted closure to and what better way than to bring it full circle. When he ended up being killed, I think he was okay with it. Maul got to spend his final moments with the closet person to him emotionally. The last one he had left from his old life.

    I’m well behind the curve but just watched this on Rebels and it has to be my favourite scene so far for several reasons.
    1) The way they made Obi-Wan look like Ewan and Alec;
    2) The way Obi-Wan starts in an attacking stance then moves to a defensive one - you can see Maul’s confusion;
    3) Obi-Wan takes Maul apart in 3 moves;
    4) His compassion by catching and holding Maul up as he dies;
    5) His honest answer about Luke; and,
    6) Maul actually finds some peace knowing that he will be avenged - it was all he wanted at that point.

      bit late on the reply, but the first stance kenobi took was the stance of his main style. he was about to buckle down and be in it for the long haul, before deciding to try and end the fight the way he did. kenobi's main style is a defensive one, which makes it confusing when the opening stance is an offensive one. the form that kenobi went with during this fight is more aggressive, which of course, opens with a more defensive opening stance.

      Yes, Maul never chose the dark side or the Sith, it was forced upon him by Palpatine when he was a kid. Even Mother Talzin was willing to give him up to protect the nightsisters. When Savage Opress died, he said “Brother, I am an unworthy apprentice, I’m not like you. I never was.” But Savage never knew that Maul didn’t choose this path, just like Savage didn’t choose it either, they’re both victims of true evil.

    • @DoctorWhoKage
      @DoctorWhoKage Год назад +1

      And, see, that's the problem I see with the Jedi and the Star Wars movies, in general.
      Some of the force-sensitive antagonists in Star Wars are just mentally ill people who've done the things they did because they couldn't hold it in any longer or they were forced to join the dark side (case in point: Maul and Barriss Offee) are classified as "fallen to the dark side", never taking a moment to analyze and examine what, exactly, is wrong with them.
      Sure, some of those character flaws are clearly made obvious at one point or another but only when the antagonist is talking about the motivations for what they do.
      For example, when Maul and Ezra meet, he pretty much tells Ezra that he wants to take revenge on the Sith, the people who wronged him, but like Anakin when Sidious was telling him the Tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise, it goes over Ezra's head and we just move forward with the plot.
      I would like to see a Star Wars series centered around a character arc about a Sith or at least a Dark Jedi who, over the course of the arc and the series, abandons the dark side, and opts to be a light side Gray Jedi when they look their demons in the face, and come to terms with and move on from their traumatic past.
      It would be a nice change of pace for once to see that not all Sith or Dark Jedi or dark side force users are evil irredeemable monsters like Darth Vader or Darth Sidious.
      But, of course, both Disney and most Star Wars fans are practically addicted to nostalgia bait so we'll likely see more movies and series about the older, more established characters within the Star Wars mythos than anything new because Disney *tried* to make something new (the Sequel Trilogy) and to say that most of the fans did not take kindly to that is a Hell of an understatement.

  • @hippothehippo

    For me its the fact that Obi-Wan doesn't drop him after his death. He closes his eyes and then holds him just a bit longer. Maybe he didn't know that Maul had been abducted as a child, or what Palpatine had done to him specifically, but he had grown to respect the man who hated him to the extent that seeing his death was tragic. You get the feeling that Obi-Wan is as angry about things ending this way as he is relieved that Maul is gone. Both of them are ultimately victims, and it's so nice to hear Maul reaffirm that they're both victims of the same man just before his death. The ironic tragedy being that with Maul's death, Obi-Wan is left truly alone, without anyone who can understand him anymore. Even Yoda, Wise as he may be, could never understand Obi-Wan's relationship with this man.

And he was from the Fire Nation, just like you. If we knew each other back then, do you think we could've been friends, too?"--Aang to Zuko
      Sure, only the last line of that quote was relevant but I do feel it's the same way with Aang and Zuko. But unfortunately, Obi-Wan and Maul's "friendly rivalry" doesn't end like Aang and Zuko's does. As evidenced by this video we're commenting on.

    Theres people actually complaining about this, saying that it was bad because the fight ended so quickly, but this scene wasnt about swishy lightsaber duels its about two characters coming toghetehr and clashing. Like Maul has made it his lives goal to kill Obi Wan and yet because hes overcomfident he fails. Ultimately dying in the arms of his enemy, and Obi Wan just lets him, holds him so he doesnt die alone at least, and closes his eyes as a last gesture of respect, showing how honorable he is. Maul killed so mamy people, he killed Satine, the woman Obi Wan loved, just to hurt him and still Obi Wan refuses to let him die alone.
    Also that line about revenge at the end, really shows how stubborn and misguided Maul was, even with his last breath, his last thought is revenge. Although I do believe that he meant "us" as in everyone Palpetine has wronged, himself, savage, Obi Wan, Ahsoka, Anakin even, literally everyone.

    Maul was perhaps one of the most lost souls ever to wield the Force. He hated Kenobi, he hated the Jedi… but he also hated the Sith, yet still practiced their methods. He had everything taken from him all throughout his life and had nothing and nobody left to love, care, or fight for. His hatred was the only thing that fueled him to the very end. And perhaps the most tragic part is that in the end his hate became less focused and inevitably failed him. The last thing he mutters was his hope for vengeance against the Sith for ruining his life. And also perhaps for the first time ever in this moment acknowledges that he was not the only one who suffered at the Sith’s hands. But it was the fact he wished for vengeance and not justice even til his dying breath is heartbreaking. I hope that he inevitably found peace and that his soul may rest forever in the Force.

    I don’t think he just refers to himself and Obi-Wan. I think he refers to everyone who’s lives were ruined by the Clone Wars as a result of Palpatine’s plan. Anakin, Savage, Dooku, the clones, the Jedi, the Sith… all of them ruined by Palpatine’s master plan along with millions of innocents. I think that, in his final moments, Maul finally saw the bigger picture beyond his revenge. He’d been driven by hatred for so many years, and now that he was on his deathbed the hatred finally disappeared and he only wished the best for Luke to give the Emperor what he deserved. To finally give all of his victims the posthumous closure of knowing they’d been avenged.

    Maul's death is tragic yet poetic in a way because right before he died he realized that he had spent too long trying to get revenge on the wrong enemy and that it costed him his life. He was a boy whose life was ruined the moment Sidious took him from his mother. He realized that while Obi wan did maim him, he was just defending himself and getting justice for his master, but that it was Sidious that put him in that situation and sent him to fight the Jedi, that it was Sidious who stole him from his family, that it was Sidious who made him a Sith, that it was the Sith that wiped out his people and killed family(Savage and Talzin) and that Sidious trully was the only that he should have focused his revenge on rather than Obi wan. He dies in the arms of his former enemy, hoping that Obi wan and eventually Luke destroy the Sith and avenge the wrongs done to him. A tragic death with a terrible realization and yet a bit of hope in the end that he might get justice against Palpatine through Obi wan and Luke.

      Given how deadly a lightsaber really is, i think these fights should be short. It's like how Fencing is to a touch - were it not sport, that "touch" would be a lethal, fight-ending blow, just like a lightsaber. It only takes one solid hit.

    Probably a top 5 scene of all of starwars and no one can argue with me otherwise. There is so much in this duel. Obi Wan, changing through the three different stances, his current, his clone wars era, to Qui Gons. Maul, thinking he can fool Obi as he did with with Obis master, lunges. And then, just like that, short but clean, maul was done. Even as his greatest enemy ever lied there dying he still held him in his arms to comfort him as he passed like an old friend just as he did with Qui Gon and Satine, his master and forbidden love interest, the 2 most important people in his life, who were both taken from him by the very man hes holding. Being the most true to what it means to be a jedi he holds maul in death differences aside because at the end of the day they are both brothers in the force. As maul lies there dying he asks "tell me is it the chosen one?" With obi wan confirming he uses his final breath to state "he will avenge us" filling maul with hopefullness for the first, and last time.

    Maul is a pretty tragic character with everything in hindsight
    He was groomed and corrupted to believe he should always seek power and let hatred drive him
    its why he's chased Kenobi all these years
    Why he invaded Mandalor
    Why he tried to have Ahsoka help him kill Sidious
    Why he tried to make Ezra his apprentice and seek vengeance on everyone who wronged him
    Its all he's ever known and in his final moments he finally found peace away from all that and just wanted the comfort of knowing that the chosen one was going to make right everything Sidious had destroyed and taken

    Maul was the most underrated character in star wars.He survived since the before the clone wara and had hunted obi wan for so long and lost so much.And that line where he was just stranded in the desert and said 'it ends where it began' was just legendary.Cheers to my favourite Sith

    Mauls final moments were incredibly similar to Qui-Gon Jinn's, the only major differences were caused by the side the were on
    Maul being a sith, he was focused on his hatred and vengeance
    "Is he the chosen one?"
    "He will avenge us"
    Qui-Gon being a Jedi, he was focused on hope and the future
    "...Promise me you will train the boy"
    "He is the chosen one"
    "He will bring balance to the force..."
    I think Darth Maul would've been a Jedi had he not been turned to the dark at a young age. Such a tragic yet well written character

    Very noble death, just a mano e mano dual. Imagine someone like Grievous showing up with a bunch of droids, four light sabers, and a blaster to battle Obi Wan. Maul just shows up alone and is like, "let's settle this!". One can only wonder if some of Obi Wan's sympathy comes from having seen his own padawan fall to the dark side. He realizes that there can be humanity even in Sith Lords, and probably also realizes that Maul arguably had no choice in becoming evil given the course of events in his life. There is an honesty to Maul's character and personality that I appreciate despite his evilness. Maul typically gives it to you straight unlike the schemer that Palpatine is

    It was very Kurosawa. The two warriors, analyzing each other, calculating and thinking through the fight in their heads. Each knows the other, their stances tell their history. Both of them are master warriors, and at their level, the fight usually lasts only an instant. It's not about the swishing lightsabers and the action, but about the men involved. It ends in an instant. Yet Kenobi still shows compassion towards his enemy, and Maul has some peace before he dies. It's brilliant.

    I’ve always understood that this fight was words only, but I’ve just noticed that the music reflects that as well. You hear the music when they talk along with the drums (similar to the phantom menace). When Maul mentions the existence of Luke, the music builds up. Once the first step is taken… silence. Maul taking that step along with the music hints that the battle was already fought. And the slow and slightly variant of the force theme tells us who won. After the final blow 5 seconds later, the music picks back up in a somber tone showing the aftermath and the weight of the fight.
