I remember watching Christopher Lee play Rasputin when I was a kid. His portrayal was the gold standard. I haven't seen anyone else play that character so convincingly since. Obviously, Christopher Lee was a truly amazing actor to the end.

I couldn't disagree with you about any of those choices, Bryn, as they were certainly ALL memborable characters, most of whom would probably have made my own list too. My No. 1 would DEFINITELY have been Norman Bates too, as that was such an iconic and unforgettable performance by the late, great Anthony Perkins. Great to see you give a mention to Melanie Daniels from The Birds, and yes, you certainly made a good point to chew over there when you said that could Mel's presence in the town have possibly triggered the bird attacks off? That is what I love so much about that movie, as its sheer ambiguity really keeps you guessing on possible causes for the bird attacks. Excellent. Two masterpiece movies there from Alfred Hitchcock. Other 60s horror characters that would have made my own list are: 1. Mary Henry from CARNIVAL OF SOULS; 2. Matthew Hopkins from WITHCHFINDER GENERAL; 3. Dracula from (of course!) DRACULA HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE; 4. Professor Marus (Karloff) Monserrat from THE SORCERORS; 5. Carol Ledoux from REPULSION; and 6. Bruno (Lon Chaney Jr.) from SPIDER BABY. Of course, there are many, many more I could have included there. Always difficult narrowing down such lists to just 10. So yeah, another excellent video, Bryn. Am really looking forward to your next episode, the 70s, and I think I have a fairly good idea of the horror character who will probably make your No. 1 spot for that decade! If it is who I THINK it is, then that character is certainly the stuff of all nightmares! Say no more. Well done again on the video, Bryn. Really enjoyed it.

Great list Bryn - your knowledge of the period shines out as always.
I watched the Japanese movie Onibaba recently - is it strictly a 60’s horror film? If so, I’d probably choose the mother actress Nobuko Otowa. The performances in that are amazing.
    There was a little known
Horror movie starring Oliver Reed from the 60’s that was shown a few times in the 70s on telly. I caught it once or twice as a kid and it disturbed and psychologically stuck with me for years afterwards. Would love to watch it again but after over 40yrs it probably wouldn’t be so scary today. It was called The Shuttered Room and was about a young couple that inherit an old windmill and decide to renovate it against the wishes of the locals - but there’s something wicked locked inside an attic room that may scupper the couples plans.

    • @horrorhands879

I’ve probably overstated The Shuttered Room too much. It’s been 40yrs since I last saw it. Think it was near impossible to find on dvd or bluray a few years ago. Might still be. It had a bit of Hammer type feel to it. Probably doesn’t hold up well today but I’d love to see it again and anything with Oliver Reed in it can never be throw-away imho.

Movies aging badly is caused really by them becoming overused... so often films which are so good they become so overused, so they become cliche. It's more often seen in books (my degree was in literature) but it can be seen with movies especially. I find a lot of Stephen King stuff 'cliche', but that's really because they become super-popular and then just get 'homage-d' over decades. I'd say Salem's Lot is super-cliche, and even It, but they were really world changing at the time.
I'd agree for sure with you: Rosemary's Baby and even Night of the Living Dead have become so referenced over time, that they seem cliched to us, but they really changed the world at the time of release.
    Interesting topic for sure!

Another super duper entry in the series. And several films here I haven't seen. The 60s really has become my sweet spot, but that's in the world of sci-fi, so I don't have much off the top of my head for my own list. Though I'm pretty sure Mr. Sardonicus would be on it. Dick Miller and/or Jack Nicholson from the Little Shop of Horrors. Vincent Price in The Last Man of Earth.

Saying that, I'd have put in Mary Henry from Carnival of Souls, played by Candace Hilligloss (who's pretty active on RUclips and Social Media, even now)... I love Carnival of Souls, even though that one has likely become cliche.
The second (and third) 'woman in distress' character (yes another cliche now, lol) would be Deborah Kerr from The Innocents, and Alexandra Isles as Victoria Winters from Dark Shadows... essentially playing the same character as the heavily referenced Deborah Kerr role from 5 years earlier... there is no originality in art, lol.

@@horrorhands879 if you like folk horror I recommend checking out the episode Baby from the anthology series Beasts. Its on YT - just search Beasts Baby.
Beasts was a mini series from 1977 by Nigel Kneale who wrote Quatermass and The Pit. Each episode was standalone and the main gist was that each of the episodes featured various animals.
Baby is really the only one worth watching. Its very eerie in places and a lot of people were freaked out by it at the time. Some of the acting is a bit flaky - its TV acting, and the direction is a bit flat compared to nowadays but it’s serviceable. The story is pretty good though and although it flags a bit in the middle its worth sticking with as the end is freaky. My sister had nightmares for weeks 😄.

    Wait! I’m still thinking about the 50s list…. 😫
Okay, this list is far too hastily cobbled together to put them in order but here goes nothing:
Baron Frankenstein (Peter Cushing) - Came into his own in the 60s, Must Be Destroyed is where he goes full tilt bad guy and we start to see him at his best.
Mocata (Charles Gray) - Love Mocata, as evil and smug as they come.
Dr Charles Decker (Michael Gough) - Hilarious character, so villainous, so insane. Just an outright crazy b**tard.
Fu Manchu (Christopher Lee) - “The world shall hear from me again.”
Coffin Joe (José Majica Marins) - Love the first three Coffin Joe films (particularly the first two) and he is a very interesting anti-hero. Sometimes the villain, sometimes the hero, always it seems self destructive due to his schemes.
Prince Prospero (Vincent Price) - Vincent Price in total sh*t mode. Simply ruthless.
Dr Adolphus Bedlo (Peter Lorre) - I really enjoy Lorre in The Raven, he’s great as the antagonistic, drunken old soak.
Duc de Richleau (Christopher Lee) - Le Duc is a great character, I so wish they’d (Hammer) done all of Wheatley’s De Richleau novels back in the day. In particular Gateway To Hell, where Le Duc De Richleau is an old man in his 70s and comes up against a fiend akin to the antichrist, who is so powerful that he is attempting to open the titular portal in South America. A superior book to The Devil Rides Out IMO.
Dracula (Christopher Lee) - Lee would’ve been in my 1950s list as Dracula too, he was excellent throughout both decades.
Prof. Bernard Quatermass (Andrew Kier) - Kier was fab as Quatermass, better than the irascible Donlevy portrayal. I did like Morrell but preferred Kier. Special shout out to Father Sandor too.
Baby Jane Hudson (Bette Davis) - Mesmerising.
I would’ve loved to include HAL 9000, Norman Bates, Princess Asa Vajda, Christopher Lee as Franklyn Marsh and Roddy McDowall as Pimm from It!.
I could easily have included some TV characters too from things like The Outer Limits, The Twilight Zone and The Munsters etc.

Glad I'm not the only one who finds Rosemary's Baby an overrated piece of shit movie.
The Omen did it soooooo much better.
I have a confession to make - I'm coming up 50 next month, been watching horror since the age of 4, and have NEVER seen The Birds.
A total blindspot which I should rectify.

Lol! Yeah, I always found it to be a weak movie. Repulsion is Polanski’s better film from the 60s. Oooh, definitely check out The Birds! Thanks for watching.

I feel that way about the Shining and the Exorcist, lol. Agree the Omen is far better than Rosemary's Baby...and the Exorcist, if I didn't make that clear already

My take on Melanie Daniels from The Birds is that she is helpless because she has no flock. She's pretty much without a family, adrift, alone. So when Life (symbolized by the birds) attacks her, she needs to find a flock, fast. Mitch has been held back from mating & increasing his own flock by a narcissistic mother. But the attacks teach her the error of her ways, & even she learns to lower her barriers. She & Melanie will bond, even as Melanie has done with Mitch & his little sister. Hitchcock always emphasized the importance of the male/female bond. Very romantic, Hitch was. ❤

Well, think of how the domesticated lovebirds brought Mitch & Melanie together to begin with, generously, gently. Then, when the two kept fencing, warily circling each other, the wild birds stepped up the pressure. Then consider the symbolic sacrifices of the man living alone, plus Annie Hayworth, who gave up on Mitch. Mother Nature will have her way, it seems. "You need each other, people. Get over yourselves!" 🦅
Well, that's my take, anyway. 😉
