    Wish you added in the bit of Athena's Aegis also having the ability to quake the skies with thunderbolts when she shook it. So imagine Athena vs an army. She leaps into battle and destroys hundreds of men at a time with a single swing from her spear, and as she dances between them in a flurry of death, the occasional warrior who is unlucky enough to gaze upon her shield is turned to stone. And while she does all this, the sound of thunderbolts stab the sky, demoralizing her enemies as they stare in awe as men die in front of them, either from turning to stone, or getting obliterated by her spear. A true warrior Goddess that's for sure.

    Fan facts:
    Before Persian invasion in Athens, Athena's sacret animals were qrows and snakes (you can see that in her archaic statue from Acropolis). After the destraction of Acropolis' first temple and the construction of Parthenon her animal changed to owls because Acropolis was full of owl nests. By this is possible that Homer meant grey-eyed and had nothing to do with owls. Also Athena was half water deity because of her mother and half sky daity because of Zeus. So there is a chance that is an evidence of her heritage (sky-sea, blue-green). I love this godess. She is so fascinating. :)

      Zeus's first wife was Metis, mother to Athena. Metis was the Titaness of thought. She received a prophecy that her son would take over her husband's throne. But at this time, she was pregnant with Athena. So Zeus, paranoid as ever, took a page out of his father's book. He instructed Metis to transform into a fly. He then opened his mouth and swallowed his first wife.

I mention this because I was very impressed by the amount of information, even obscure facts, that you included and organized so well, so succinct and clear, with excellent visuals. Excellent use of Wonder Woman, who is the pop culture parallel to Athena, the Athena energy if you will. There is another version of her and Medusa. Where she was not enraged at Medusa, but appalled by what happened. Therefore, she turned her into the, "monster," so no man could ever do that to her again.
    The story of the apple makes me laugh my ass off. I HIGHLY doubt Athena, Greek Goddess of War and Wisdom (and yes, other things) gave two shits about who was the fairest Goddess. There is no mention that it was a spell created by the Goddess of Discord and Chaos. No one talks about Athena's looks, just her eyes. I honestly have no idea how she got dragged into that one.

    • @b.thomas8926
      @b.thomas8926 3 года назад +20

      I think it was because she was being shown up by Aphrodite and Hera. She disliked both intensely. And it is implied she's beautiful, like her mother, though everyone avoids talking about her looks, assumingly out of respect for her. So when it became a case of who was the fairest, Athena tossed her hat in just to muck up Aphrodite's claim and to mess with Hera. Later, she and Hera teamed up against Aphrodite and Apollo during the Trojan wars. That little apple caused a ton of trouble! Eris for the win!
      As for Medusa, I think some of the context is lost and everyone is repeating different versions of the story. You got to understand that you're dealing with both Greek (early) and Roman (later) telling of the story from various authors who were not afraid to add a little 'context' to their version. Homer only described her as being terrifying. She was later given wings, she could turn you to stone, she had snake hair or whatnot. In one story, she even gave birth to Pegasus!
      The point is, everyone agrees she was monstrous, as well as her two sisters, Stheno and Euryale. All three were daughters of Phorcys and Ceto or maybe Gia. All being primordial beings. (Not Olympians, pre-dating them) Unfortunately for Medusa, she was the only one that was mortal.
      The story that makes the most sense to me was that she was a Priestess of Athena and was sworn to be chaste. However she laid with Poseidon, (willingly, because she's the daughter of a sea god and probably thought Poseidon was hot stuff) and was punished for breaking her vows. Her two sisters stepped in to argue her case and Athena punished them for giving her lip. To me, that lines up with why we don't have a war between Athena and Poseidon over Poseidon raping a girl in Athena's temple. Medusa's actions justifies the punishment she receives.
      If she was raped or not is debatable. The story changed over time and the setting moved to be more convenient to the author even though everyone agrees she was punished by Athena for _______ reason.
      All I can say is that her story, her appearance, and why she was punished was malleable. You're dealing with myths written 2600+ years ago by several authors. So who knows?

    • @aseeds7785
      @aseeds7785 3 года назад +5

      We highly doubt, but there is a chance, in a way it gives more character/color if she does care who was the fairest. Reminds me of a "true" story from a prostitute who said there were rich, powerful men paying to eat her out to give her an orgasm. Why should powerful men care if a prostitute has an organism or not? Sounds fake, could be fake, but it might be real. I would agree she might had done it to "protect" medusa IF medusa agrees to the terms or there was some hidden knowledge she knew that might had happen if medusa wasn't turned to the way she was.

The fact that Athena cursed her fits with the depiction of all the Greek gods since they were described as imperfect and cursing someone because they were assaulted is definitely imperfect also since she is the goddess of wisdom it adds another layer to it

    One of the reasons I made this video is because I feel Athena is often unfairly characterized as cruel, petty and heartless. Although she can be incredibly tough, I don’t think it’s true that she’s unfeeling. I feel a lot of the bad rap comes from Ovid’s story of Medusa. What are your thoughts on this?

    • @kitanaedenian2575
      @kitanaedenian2575 3 года назад +8

      I always feel like it as well.
      Specially because the Aracne and the Medusa myths are Roman's so that wasn't the Athena the Greeks worshiped

    • @TinyEpics
      @TinyEpics  3 года назад +7

      @@kitanaedenian2575 Exactly. And as far as I know Ovid detested the gods and purposefully characterized them as poorly as possible to help inspire the Roman people to distrust the gods and rely on themselves more. Super interesting, as the secular world began to supplant the pious one. I can see things from both perspectives, but I personally have a sense of respect for the Greek deities and their depth of symbolism which was perhaps inherited from worship dating back to the Paleolithic era (according to archaeologist Marija Gimbutas and others).
      All that said, ancient Greek culture and of course their myths contain their fair share of misogyny and other problematic topics. But I think there has been an agenda for the last several millennia to demonize the female deities much more than the male deities.

    • @swapnilsonawane9874
      @swapnilsonawane9874 2 года назад

      There have been almost no efforts to show positive sides of greek deities. There have been no stories of Zeus blessing someone or freeing them from theit torment. In most of the myths the deities either act in their own way and don't care about mortals who worshipped them or when they intervein in lives of mortals it's often for the bad. Then there are poets like Ovid who basically villainized these deities and helped the Christians to secure their ideology.

      I like your Athena video a lot. The points and stories about her you touched on gives an overview I can dive more into. It also points out certain things so details have now been pieced and clicked together. I now have a better understanding and view of Athena. Thank you!
      I've always thought that some things do not add up with the Medusa story/ account. (As with many of myth accounts). There's a lot of blank space and things to do not quite connect. I usually then just understand that's where we as individuals and a culture speculate and read into it. In the end, the reading reflects more about the individual and culture. For me, the blank spaces will always be unknown, and therefore where theories and imaginations can run the wildest. Maybe that's part of the beauty of these myths.

    The color of the godness eyes is actually unclear. English speakers always said she's grey-eyed. BUT, _glaukos_ means "green" or "blue" with a notion of transparency, so _glaukopis_ should mean "green/blue eyes". The word itself comes from the marine deity Glaukos. I've always learnt that Athena has an undefinite color of eyes, however it seems that her eyes are closer to blue-green. In french, Athena is sometimes called _la déesse aux yeux pers_ ( _pers_ eyed goddess) which is an unknow color nowadays. The color is somewhere between blue and green but grey is between black and white.

    • @TinyEpics
      @TinyEpics  2 года назад

      Thanks for your insightful comment!
      I think the famous translation “grey-eyed goddess” was used to try and describe an unusual, indeterminate quality of Athena’s eyes where the color, like a mirror, reflects and changes depending on the environment around her as well as her particular temperament. Rather like the sea.
      I also like the use of the word “flashing” to describe her eyes. Reminds me of polished bronze catching the light, like the Aegis she carries.
      Madeline Miller chose to describe Athena using a very cold, grey and steely palette in her novel “Circe”. Wow. Athena comes off frightening in that book!

      @@TinyEpics Athena taking on War/Martial stylings and patronages I suspect was a result of Athens needing to convey a sense of powerful militarism to potential threats like the Spartans who were not only highly militaristic, they were extremely patriarchal. Athenian society was no less patriarchal but they wanted to not only assert their intellectual superiority over Sparta and Thebes, there wanted to establish and be seen as not only militaristically capable of defending themselves but that this defense was sanctified presided over by the Goddess of War herself. The city might have been named for a female deity but there was to be no mistake, that this was no ordinary Goddess, and she was not subject to the typical whims the female sex. Athena is the only goddess that cared more about humanity, and her participation in the Trojan War is her revenge against Posideon for defiling her priestess, Medusa, and her temple. She could not go up against one of the original triumvate ( her father Zeus, and Her uncles Posideon and Hades ) openly and had to do so undercover with her champion odysseus. Note that Athena is not a vain goddess, but she can be prideful because she can be rightfully so. I believe her participation in the contest for beauty (which she is most eligible because wisdom is beautiful as it is the most craftful thought and consideration that brings forth the best solutions and actions) but she did not participate for physical beauty per se, rather, she is in on the action and scheme and bigger themes about the big issues of the End of the Age of the Gods, And is playing along to further the agenda of saving all Creation by a transition to beyond the Age Of Heroes ( in her unique way in her own dominion and influence) remember, Zeus WISELY said no to the judging and gave it to Paris, of all people, a Trojan prince. Furthermore, Her episode with Arachne the Weaver (is the only other outburst for her because she punished Arachne for her hubris for challenging her the title of the best Weaver ( although, it was the ungrateful villagers that forced the poor girl to go toe to toe with Athena. The goddess did not kill Arachne, because the poor girl hanged herself, it was Athena who felt pity and some culpability, so she ressurected her as a spider, so Arachne can do what she does best and loved to do, forever). Know that Athena did not punish Arachne for being a better weaver, but rather punish her for being foolish and being swayed by the villagers into the competition. And she never laid a finger on Arachne. Arachne killed herself. In order to appreciate Athena, we really must study her actions and her motivation as an embodiment of Wisdom, a mostly human quality, before we malign her for being tempermental, which is an utter opposite frame of mind from cool and level_headness that bespeaks wisdom. IO! IO! HAIL Athena Erganê!! HAIL Athena Ellênia!!

      @@michaeltrinta7207 that is a general reading -- but you are imposing a 20th century feminist reading to an ancient story. so, i am sorry to say that your reading and understanding is Anachronistic. If you are a feminist theorist, you need to also read an essay by Helene Cixious on the Medusa -- and also understand the relationship between God amd Priest. The rule stipulates chastity no matter what happens, like Cassandra and Apollo -- which is another case study -- so you need to read it as a deeper mystery to the relationship between a priestess and a god. Furthermore, as Godly hierarchy goes as i mentioned before, the original triumvate is hard to go against, and Posideon have an ongoing feud with Athena over the Patronage of Athens -- so you need to understand the backstory of their "tit for tat" games, so another reading is that Posideon ravished Medusa to get back at Athena for taking away Athens from him . Now, you also need to consider Medusa as possibly a Gorgon ( more obscure myths said that there are 3 sisters, of which Medusa is one. Non-human priestesses and priests are common also); so we wondered if she was human standards beautiful or otherwise to begin with or as a form of unfoldment of Medusa's nature -- but one thing we do know that as a monster, she is formidable, and her power resides in her stare/ eye and head/ caput -- which is a place where wisdom or thought resides, and Athena is also associated with sight/ perspective ( her eyes are storm grey) , so -- when Medusa's head is absorbed into Athena's Aegis, we must understand symbolism and that her favourite priestess will be by her side- literally-- forever, serving Athena. When you read of misadventures of mortal beings with gods, the humans tend to be distilled into the very essence of their being and nature, and at that point united with their chosen patron deity's "godhead". So, when we consider that godhood is not easily or freely given, the closest these loyal servants and priests and lovers would get is to be transformed into something else that would last forever. You need to learn not to see Medusa's fate as an injustice and failure-- her fate us avenged by the destruction of Posideon's favourite city, Troy, by Athena through her champion, wily Odysseus ( and Posideon, later made Odysseus' life hell -- 7rs at sea in the Odyssey, to get back at Athena). To basically use 2nd wave feminism critical theory to sledgehammer something so nuanced as an ancient myth that has survived millennia is not only a lapse of perspective, but also a reminder for us to require abit of patience and wisdom to meaningfully unpack.

    Great video of the Greek goddess. But as for her story with Medusa, since it was told by a Roman, isn't it basically propaganda since the Romans are said to be decendants of Aeneas, a Trojan? Thanks.

    • @TinyEpics
      @TinyEpics  3 года назад +3

      Thanks a lot! That’s a very interesting observation. Ovid was not a fan of the gods in general, regardless of their allegiance to Greeks or Trojans.
      He wanted the Romans to leave behind their dependence on the gods and rely on themselves instead. In a way, Ovid poked fun at the gods in order to show that they were just as jealous and revengeful as humans… but even worse!
      So yes, it was anti-gods propaganda in general.
      An ancient Greek writer, take Hesiod for instance, was pious and showed great respect for the gods in their work.

    It makes sense that the Romans would change the stories about Athena. The Romans considered themselves descendants of Troy, and Athena fought against them. This was their way of getting revenge on her. Demoting her role and demonizing her actions while at the same time Promoting her bitter rival Ares.
