I myself lost my grandmother to the nazis. My mother at the age of four, saw her mother,seven months pregnant, beheaded by a nazi ss officer in a small village outside of Sparta Greece. This story will be forever told, for many generations. This movie reminded me of my mother's story. Hopefully war and destruction will stop .

watching this film gives me a glimpse of the Greek history of independence that heroes and heroine are born Christina was embodiment of true leader tho her death is unacceptable but on one hand it gives strength and bravery for his people. All of Greece as you know it today was not completely liberated until the end of 1912, Balkan wars and the end of WWI.
@@Kael7777 the Greeks actually invaded Turkey in 1919, that was a bloody affair for the citizens on both sides, eventually the Greeks had to withdraw.

A true Greek tragedy. Intelligent and low-key story, little-known to us the West, of Middle Eastern history.
It's more European history, no harm looking into the Greek War of Independence, it's time most Americans study European history in general and not focus too much on the the 2 world wars.
As it turned out The Russians, French and British came into the war on the side of the Greeks.
Note the Russians kicked the Turks out of Crimea a few years earlier, hopefully that rings a few bells.
@@patrickfarrell5092 Yes. It's more than past the time when Americans should open their eyes and see some of the world's history. Because they're so isolated by oceans on both sides they've become so extremely insular. They think they have no reason to care about anything else or any other place.
That idea is extremely narrowminded and stupid, and it creates so many problems for them, at home and abroad, but they believe it anyway. To the extent that they've become extremely xenophobic. Their country is a goddam disaster, but they refuse to see anything that speaks any truth about it. Instead they just yell "USA, USA, USA!" at the top of their lungs.
Since WW2 the politicians have been using that war to manipulate them, and sure they had reason to be proud, but OMG! They've become delusional and arrogant! They think no other people or place are any good, so they of course are the best in everything, in every way. It makes us Canadians sick. We are isolated too, but we work at overcoming the problem of being cut off.
We're bombarded by their bullshit 24/7, and it just seems to keep getting worse. Heaven help us if that maniac Trump gets elected again next year! We're far from having gotten over the last Trump presidency! Both of their 2 parties are are a disaster, and both are protecting Trump, who should be in jail for life.

Was this ever nominated for an Oscar? It sure deserves several! It's visually very beautiful, as well as all of the usual things we look for. So much perfect attention to detail in every way. It should have been a blockbuster!
But instead the crap about stupid comic book charachters keeps rolling on the reels, or whatever they use in theatres now. That is so incredibly dumb.
How Americans can be stupid enough to pay a huge amount of money for that, I'll never know! I wouldn't even be able to sit through one of those! I did try once. I forget if I left or fell asleep. I didn't see it all though. It was the first of the X Men series, and it bored me to tears. Garbage gets celebrated and great shows like this get ignored! It makes no sense.

Beautiful movie. The Janissary 's were captured slave boys from lands that were invaded by the Ottomans and turned into fighting machines. Vlad the Impaler's history gives an insight to how the Ottomans operated.

Im Persian and think Ottoman sultani culture was great. They even spoke Persian as an official language..now don't be confused..many of them had blue eyes and blond hair..just look at the paintings.
Hair color and eyes are not relevant at all to whether or not they are or were great! And you wouldn't think they were great if you had been oppressed and your family killed.
