    Hi, thanks for the video.
    I actually like the 2-step process for mask selection. It appears to clean up the edge(s) very nicely. I haven’t been using that and will certainly give it a try on areas that are appropriate.
    Now, here’s a little tip that can make this approach a bit quicker to implement.
    You are working with straight edges for the most part. Using the adjustment brush, do the following:
    - Click once on a starting point.
    - Move mouse to an ending point along a straight path.
    - Press and hold down the shift key while clicking the mouse on this ending point.
    You’ve just created an accurate straight line mask in a very short time (and using only 2 clicks of the mouse/pen). No need for brushing the mouse across the area; just click, move, shift-click and you’re done.
    This works for both laying down a mask as well as erasing a mask on a straight line/path.
    Hope this helps.

    The two-stage masking method was an eye-opener. A great technique to learn. Thank you.

    I'm just starting out with shooting raw and using Lightroom, this has been a big help. Sometimes I wish there was just a pen tool instead though, I find it much easier to make a selection that way. I almost sure there is a way you can create the mask with Photoshop then transition into Lightroom, but I haven't quite figured that out yet.

      Hi Jonathan! I am happy to hear that this helped you.
      Yes, a pen tool would be great. But that's what Photoshop is really for. So, I guess chances are slim that we will ever see this type of tool in Lightroom.

    There is a much faster and more precise way to do the same. Maximize the brush size, 100% density, 100% flow, 0% feather, automask on, and don't drag JUST CLICK ONCE. LR will select all pixels of the same color inside the brush circle. Repeat and erase where needed. It works almost like a Magic Wand in Photoshop but limited to the brush field. Alas you cannot adjust tolerance like in PS but in many cases it works fine.

    Hi Klaus, A great tutorial and well presented without any hype or irrelevant comments. Unfortunately, this didn't answer the question I was hoping for. I would like to know if it is possible to add an effect to an entire image and then mask an area so that the effect doesn't effect that part.

    • @steve55619
      @steve55619 6 лет назад

      on my mobile version of Lightroom you can do this by creating a mask, then long-pressing it to bring up a menu that allows you to invert the mask. Not sure if that is available on different desktop versions though.

    I like this process a lot. How to you toggle back and forth between masking and other features (sharpening etc) without losing your masking) Using history doesn't seem to bring it back.

      When you use the brush, it will leave a round pin on the image which if you select then you can continue editing with that mask. You need to have the check button on for showing pins, so that you can see all the adjustment selections. You will see on the video that Klaus has show edit pins set to always.

    Klaus, fantastic tutorial and video collection. I am wondering, when you put all of your steps together, what does your workflow look like with respect to sharpening? I see you typically take an image from LR6 with no sharpening and no noise to PS then apply Topaz Denoise 6. Do you then pre-sharpen? Or do you simply apply final sharpening? I have been sharpening my RAW in LR6, sending to CS6, noise mitigation, apply creative filters, then sharpen and save. Perhaps you have a better, more effective solution.

    This is a great tutorial, however the technique will only on images that have a high contrast between edges. I would really like Lightroom to add a pen tool function so that we can do more accurate masks, it would make it so much more convenient not having to go into Photoshop just to make more accurate selections.

    • @KlausHerrmann
      @KlausHerrmann  8 лет назад

      +David Bowe You're right! Without sufficient contrast, the auto mask feature is entirely useless. I guess, introducing more powerful masking tools would cross a line that Adobe does not want to cross. Firstly, it reduces the need for buying Photoshop (good for Adobe, bad for the customer). Secondly, it makes Lightroom more complicated, which is kind of against their design philosophy for the product.
      So, yes, I do see your point, but from Adobe's standpoint, choosing not to include something like a pen tool makes perfect sense.
      Maybe they will prove me wrong! :)

    Great tutorial!! Problem I have though is at 7:45 when you are cleaning up the edges, your brush is not precise and you are able to move quickly and you get a sharp, clean edge. Mine is not working like that. It spills over into the masked area and I am having to go back into the mask and clean up. I wind up going back and forth. What am I doing wrong?

    Cool technique. Thanks. i will have to give it a try. I do real estate photography and often trees, bushes and wires are in front of an area of a house i would need to adjust like this. is there a work around for the interfering objects in the photo? could this be done in photoshop as easily? Thanks again.

    • @KlausHerrmann
      @KlausHerrmann  8 лет назад

      +Kirt Germond You can certainly do this in Photoshop, using the quick select tool or the Color Range tool, maybe. It always depends heavily on the specific image you have.
      But you can also try using the adjustment brush in Auto Mask mode in Lightroom. As long as there is a sufficiently high contrast between the interfering objects and the house, this should work fine.
      Hope this helps!

    Do you know why can I not use my brush after the 3rd time on same image?
    So what it does is: I correct 3 spots, I click new marl the 4th make sure Im on edit then nothing happens when i slide the dhaze or exposure..

    • @KlausHerrmann
      @KlausHerrmann  8 лет назад

      You can try to remove the chromatic aberration from your images before you start the masking work. You'll find the respective check box under the 'Lens Corrections' tab in the Develop module.
      Typically tough, a very narrow fringe will not be that obvious in the final image when viewing the image in normal magnification.
