Nice one Collins! I usually do all my masking in Photoshop, but anything that can help before sending it to Photoshop is a real plus. Very helpful tutorial.
Once again, a very helpful tutorial Colin. I didn't realize that you could use luminosity to refine a ACR mask. That's why I'm a big fan of your tuts! 😊
Invert simply swaps the masked and unmasked areas - you still have only one mask. Duplicate and invert creates a new mask which is the inverse of the first, such that you end up with two masks. As a simple example of a use case, say you wanted to sharpen and increase contrast on your subject and maybe reduce noise and slightly desaturate the background. First create a subject mask and apply the sharpening and contrast increase, then use duplicate and invert to create the second mask. Select the newly created mask - which will include everything but the subject - and apply the noise reduction and desaturation.
Thanks! Haven't used these techniques before. Is there a way to save the mask to use outside of ACR? For something like a sky replacement or other elements?
This seems like the right answer but Lightroom doesn't seem to be responding to luminance mask changes ): Maybe my video card just isn't gonna cut it on this computer.
Written steps are here: I have written steps here: photoshopcafe.com/how-to-refine-a-mask-in-lightroom-and-camera-raw/
The intersecting tip with luminance range is such amaro move. Thank you!
Colin as usual you go in-depth on a feature we ALL need to know for our standard workflow with masks, the intersect tool is so helpful!

Very useful for solving a problem I've had in many images. Now to see if I can follow the steps! Always appreciated. I love your tutorials.

A very helpful tutorial for a subject that frustrates me. And thank you also for the write up. Cheers...
Great way to fine tune a mask. Also I never thought of going back and forth between the mask adjustments and main adjustments.
Very useful Collin. I need to fully study the new features of LRC, especially masks. Thanks
Your every tutorial is very useful, nicely explained.

Thanks!
We never understood the 'Intersect' feature until now,,,thanx Colin.
I could have really used this tutorial last week. Thank you, this will be very useful when editing sunrises and sunsets over the mountains.
I wondered if there was a way to do what you did. I use masks all the time in LrC. Nice find and thanks.
That’s interesting. I’m going to have to watch it again and play with it some.
Thanks for the clear and concise description. It was very helpful.....
Thanks
Great video/tutorial, many thanks Colin.
Thanks, getting rid of halos is very helpful.
This is fantastic!
Thanks Faruk!
Excellent problem solving video. Thank you kindly
Absolutely useful, I have not went into the deep in those new features just yet, and you definitely helped getting there.
Beautifully explained. For me the video was extremely informative and helpful. Well done 👏
Muito bom tutorial, obrigado!
I can still see the edges though and I am waiting for Lr to do something about it! You are doing your best anyway and thank you.
Thanks Colin!
Excellent Tutorial thank you
Colin could you explained the difference between “invert” and “duplicate and invert”? This is a very helpful tutorial. Thank you!

amazing tool activity explained
Nice one😁
This is saving me right now!
very cool, thanks so much for the info.
Thank you! This is very helpful for my photography. ♥
Quite complicated. Will watch it 3 or 4 times to make understanding secure. Useful advice, most helpful.
Once you grasp it you will find it useful

Great demo Colin, thank you very much for sharing it with us as a bad mask does no one any favours! 😀👏👍
rightly said
I’m still not clear on the intersect function in masking. I’ll keep trying. I’m getting there though ! Thanks .
Very Useful.. Thank You...
Nice! Thanks
I have been trying to find a Modify option, as in Photoshop, in Lightroom to expand the area round a person. Any ideas???
I'm still trying to get my head around this. But this helped.
Thanks! Haven't used these techniques before. Is there a way to save the mask to use outside of ACR? For something like a sky replacement or other elements?
You can't export the masks, but photoshophas a really good sky replacement that you can export
@@photoshopcafe thanks! It would be nice to create masks with the luminosity pieces!
Thanks
Wow the dynamic range of that image.
Yeah, I love the DR on Sony
WOW JUST WOW!!!!!
thanks
U r a gem...

Wow great
Thanks Colin that’s helped a lot I was struggling a bit with luminance but this has cleared it up.
show how to save the photo
There is no save in LR, its always saved
As far as I could see, the halos were still very much there
It only worked on the main deciduous tree left of the building. The edges of the row of the conifer trees still had large halos at their tops.
I know. Im so confused why he did not fix it
This was helpful
These are helpful, but too fast. Clearly, no one in these videos is an actual teacher.
no
Meriadoc Brandybuck, thanks!
