Creating a Complex Selection Mask in Lightroom

- Creating a complex selection mask in Adobe Lightroom can appear difficult or almost impossible. When I talk to Lightroom users about their problems, making precise selections comes up frequently. If you also have difficulty with this, I may have some new ideas for you.
Adobe Lightroom doesn’t have the controls and masking tools of Photoshop so it can seem difficult to achieve precise selections. In this video, I demonstrate how you can use the Erase brush in the Graduated Filter to create complex selections with a single click. I then demonstrate how you can create similarly precise masks and selections using just the Adjustment Brush.
Most people struggle to create Lightroom selection masks because they approach the problem in the wrong way. Rather than zooming into the image to work at a very detailed level, you need to reduce the magnification. A few quick clicks are then all it takes to make the selection. The features in Adobe Lightroom do all the precise selection work for you.

Great tip. I hadn't appreciated the extra flexibility of the brush tool in the latest version of Lightroom.
Thanks. It's quite surprising what you can achieve in Lightroom with a little thought.
Thanks. Quite a simple but powerful use of such a widly used too.
Thank you
As ever, your videos are short, to the point - and very helpful. Many thanks for sharing them with us, Robin.
Thanks Roy. I try hard to keep them short.
I can't wait to try this tomorrow! Thanks.
Great. I hope it works well for you.
Great tips, clear and concise, useful as usual, thanks Robin!
Thanks Roger. Good to hear it's the mark with you.
Superb couple of videos on Lightroom selections Robin. Very useful indeed.
Thanks Simon. There may be another one yet. I'm just trying to work out a good example that I can incorporate into a book.
Short, succinct, and useful. Thanks!
Thanks. I try to keep the videos short and don't like to cover too much. It can become a little overwhelming.
Such a good explanation. Thanks for posting.
Thank you.
Thanks for this. It works well when there are complex vs smooth objects. When there is a continuous smooth border - say an arm against the sky - you can end up with a very subtle (couple of pixels) pale line on the border between the two areas. It looks to me like you have a hint of this in the border between the ground and the sky in your first masking effort. I've been reduced to going up to 11:1 ratio and smudging this out before now. I'm afraid I can't offer a solution
If there is some spillover in this example it doesn't matter. You can only see it when the red mask is shown. When you make the adjustments it will actually help them blend. If you create too hard and perfect and edge the adjustment look a little unnatural. Not sure if you saw the other examples I did for complex selections in Lightroom as they deal with different selection problems.
Really nice tutorial. Thanks!
Thank you
Both great thanks Robin. Now I just have to remember the hints!
Thanks. Once you have tried a couple of examples it becomes easier. I found myself working out lots of other possibilities with a little practice.
Excellent as always Robin :-)
Thank you
Easy to do when the background is a uniform colour. A whole different prospect when it isn’t. For example if you had wanted to mask the lower half of the tree against the ground.
Yes, but a lot of people who see this technique say they never thought of using it. Typically they will try to select the tree.
BUT what I think you're looking for is this tutorial ruclips.net/video/x__aPDagdss/видео.html
Robin Whalley Thanks I’ll give that a look.
Excellent review Robin, like you I'm also an XT3 user but have a Z7 as well which is my landscape camera. Will this version except a TIFF file from Fuji?
Hi Dave, did you mean to post this comment on the Lightroom video? I'm sure what the question's getting at.
Greetings from Spain. The mask is effective in the area of the branches of the tree however on the edge of the mountain that is right with the sky above ... it is disastrous ...
I disagree that the mask is disastrous. But also, please remember, this is a quick demonstration of a principle for a video. If you spot a problem in another area it only takes a moment to clean it up with the erase tool.

I want to explain a little more my previous opinion. These types of masks work quite well when the edges of the object adjacent to the mask are very well defined, however, in more complex selections with poorly defined edges other types of techniques are needed. In his example the tree is perfectly treated, but note the halo that appears on the horizon next to the sky ...
I have used these techniques and when things get more complicated, there is nothing left but to go to photoshop to do this type of work there, with more complex selections, use your selections improver, etc.
Hi please help i want to do caricatures what app do you suggest and best tutorials...i dont have much money to spend are there any free app. Thanks
Sorry, that's not an area that I know about.
