If the book said Pokéballs were invented around 1925, then we’re just a few years off from there being 100 year old Pokéballs out there. We could potentially get an actual Pokéball-tsukumogami themed Pokémon within the next generation or two
@@dragoonTT Given what we get from this book, Legends definitely strikes me as 19th Century in terms of timeline. Given we know from "Pokedex" that the first real studies were in the late 1800s and the protagonist will be doing research themselves, that probably means 1870s-1880s or so.
Aerodactyl seems closer related to Dimorphodon than Archen, so as is the case with real life paleontology, I think Archen might have just been a later discovery which updated the scientific knowledge about evolution
I was thinking the same thing, with Aerodactyl taking the place of the generic “Dinosaurs evolved into birds,” while Archen goes specifically for the likes of Archaeopteryx and Microraptor.
I love the idea that just like a group of fish is called a “school”, and crows are a “murder”, a group of Jigglypuffs is called a “chorus”. It’s just perfect.
What is intresting here and further the connection between the fictional noval in pokemon about Kadabra and the real one from Franz Kafka is that a more acurate translation of the books title wich in the original language ist Die Verwandlung would be The Transformation. I love the aesthetic of early Pokémon. They all interact with humans and the world in such realistic ways. Now it is all sanitized and every interaction between different Pokémon or Pokémon and humans revolves around friendship and cooperation. Which is fine…it’s for kids, but I would totally watch an anime themed in the aesthetic of early Pokémon, where wars happen and Pokémon, being powerful elemental themed monsters, sometimes kill people.
Palossand literally drowns you in sand while devouring your soul and only leaves rotting bones behind, and Bewears have killed countless humans by breaking them in half. Yep, so sanitized and friendly.
That's not true at all. Several Pokemon have been described as dangerous to humans (as a comment mentioned above, Bewear is a great example), and mentions of predation between Pokemon are still going strong in Pokedex entries to this day. For example, Grapploct and Golisopod having a mutual predator/prey relationship mentioned in Gen 8's pokedex.
Dragonite's status as an avatar of the god of destruction is probably tied to Lance's team of dragon Pokemon all knowing Hyper Beam, or Hakai Kousen, "Destruction Beam".
Amazing effort and excellent work from all the people involved in this translation and presentation. A big thank you to Dr. Lava, Mr. Nob Ogasawara and Nekkra, as well as Did You Know Gaming. Also, going by the official book, there's more than one Articuno, Zapdos and Moltres.
To be fair, Mew was added to the game at the last minute, but with no way to obtain it outside events(as far as people would have known at the time). Putting it in the book actually would have ruined the mystery around Pokemon # 151.
18:45 When I was a kid, my brother told me a story behind the tale of Jynx: There was a little girl that lived in a cold regions with mountains who witnessed an Articuno fly by. No one believed her and called her crazy. Driven by bullying, and the disbelief, she climbed to the mountain cave where she had seen an Articuno fly into, and was so enamored to actually find it, she didn't realize she startled the Articuno, who froze her in it's surprise. Due to Articuno's power infused with the ice, instead of dying, in the ice she transformed into a pokemon, Jynx. Although it isn't canon, it's kinda cool it did match up with the articuno's dex about freezing people into place who are enamored by the sight of it.
Oh wow that's even similar to the actual inspiration for Jinx, the yukiona. If your brother told me he had s uncle that works at Nintendo I would have believed him.

Yes, a Mew video would be great! Granted, they’re my favorite Pokémon, but Mew is so iconic with being a secret Pokémon that you couldn’t get in the game legitimately other than through events really had an impact on the franchise and on many early internet sites and school playgrounds.
This is the best video about the Pokémon Pokédex. It's great to see the true Pokédex entries for these Pokémon. It's really interesting to hear the full Pokédex entries.
It feels weird that Pokémon was originally thought as some sort of an parallel universe of our world, considering how now it has it's own lore and that stuff. This was one of my favorite series of the channel, seriously.
How could Sword and Shield's staff not know whether Pokemon undergo natural selection? Sword and Shield is the second set of games to feature regional variants- what else could they be but the result of natural selection?
sometimes creators or people involved in a project will play along with the lore of their world, like when asked a direct question they will act like your guess is as good as theirs and talk about the characters or story as if they are real or out of the loop. they probably dont want to answer that completely because for a while now it seems like pkmn isnt too concerned with a consistent lore or continuity so nothing is really set in stone.
It’s better not to write oneself into a corner in an out of universe interview then trap oneself by over explaining. They’re magical creatures that stand somewhere between real animal intellect and human intellect. Best not to drag too many details of the real world into it.
What's missing from the modern games is the sense of urgency, danger, and mystery. I love how lore was given to us in the background through pokédex entries and journals. Now it's spoonfed in the story these days. Even the music lost it's urgency after like Gen 5. Even though the game is rated E, I always felt like if I mess up this battle, one of these monsters will kill me.
Excellent, exemplary video! Loved this series! Hopefully this book & its contents became way more readily available to the publci, & outside of Japan, in the near future! Thanks so much for uploading! It's nice to see the researchers' view in Pokemon! Thanks for uploading!
I'd love for a book like this to turn up for Gen 4. "Arceus. God literally exists. We have sinned and will be cast into the pit for eternity. Because we hooked him up to a fucking treadmill with electrodes. No, not Electrodes. Electrodes"
These videos were great, everyone involved did an excellent job. I still wish we could've gotten this for a North American release. Even though it was released as part of a strategy guide, I still would've liked to read the information it provided. Shows that they put a lot of work unto building the Pokémon lore/universe.
I love this video brings up the retcon with Archen and yet the book says that Aerodactyl is "The progenitor of birds" despite appearing only 2 million years ago, 158 million years _after_ the first birds evolved. That and Kabuto only appearing 2 million years ago and being said to be the ancestor of groups which first appeared in the Early and Late Jurassic respectively.
These 3 videos are some of yhe best pokémon lore videos ever made! Please do a video on mew! Also, a personal theory: Maybe some pokémon, like arcanine & the dratini line, were considered legendaries because they had more power than other pokémon and were rarer. This could explain why even in the game some legendary pokémon feel more like rare pokémon.
These videos were amazing. I don't consider myself a genwunner but I am a huge enthusiast about the first generation of pokemon games, and the context that surrounded them, the era a lot of fans are now calling "Pokemania", there was a certain atmosphere to it that a lotof people reductively dismiss by chalking it all up to 90's kid nostalgia and it's really hard to communicate that there was more to it than that. This book really goes a long way to flesh out those first pokemon games but honestly even though a lot of this was somewhat new information to me it all sounded like stuff I should already know. I'm sure having the help of the original translator helped that along. I would love a video on the origins of Mew. The mystique surround Mew was so insane, in schools and playgrounds it's existence was debated as if this thing was a friggin' cryptid, but because the Missingno trick was real, we were all ready to believe just about any little rumor.

What do you think?
When the video starts with "Did you know that Gengar literally kills people",you know it's going to be a great video.
Gotta chomp on some spirits yo
@@EZOnTheEyes You must be a Gengar.
I think they also do it, via hiding in your shadow too.
The greatest pokemon project I've seen in a looooong time.
All three of these videos were fantastic and thorough. You guys really did the fandom and anime/gaming history a SOLID by not only putting this together but by getting Ogasawara-san to officially bless it with his translations. This is content that the world over will reference for centuries--yes, CENTURIES--to come, count on it!
This entire series was very enlightening. Truly sheds light on what pokemon really are. And the thought process on pokemon creation. Thank you so much for putting this out.
Insane that the "people can turn into Kadabra?" mystery, is actually just an in-fiction book taken out of context to fit in on the game boy.
Also it would have been so cool if they kept making books of these detail for the rest of the generations.
please dedicate a full video to the origins of mew, that would be such a fun watch
I'd sign on for a full video of Mew goodness for sure!

If the book said Pokéballs were invented around 1925, then we’re just a few years off from there being 100 year old Pokéballs out there. We could potentially get an actual Pokéball-tsukumogami themed Pokémon within the next generation or two
I mean Pokémon Legends Arceus has an Edo era theme.
@@dragoonTT Given what we get from this book, Legends definitely strikes me as 19th Century in terms of timeline. Given we know from "Pokedex" that the first real studies were in the late 1800s and the protagonist will be doing research themselves, that probably means 1870s-1880s or so.
@@Talendale Also some of the fashion and miscellaneous objects don't look particularly medieval
@@Talendale scarlet and violet scientist are also from the late 1800s
Aerodactyl seems closer related to Dimorphodon than Archen, so as is the case with real life paleontology, I think Archen might have just been a later discovery which updated the scientific knowledge about evolution
I was thinking the same thing, with Aerodactyl taking the place of the generic “Dinosaurs evolved into birds,” while Archen goes specifically for the likes of Archaeopteryx and Microraptor.
I love the idea that just like a group of fish is called a “school”, and crows are a “murder”, a group of Jigglypuffs is called a “chorus”.
It’s just perfect.
These 3 videos have been some of the best ones from DidYouKnowGaming to date! Great job!!
Dude, I’d love a Mew episode. Also, thanks to everyone for their hard work on this series.
this series has been so cool ngl
I especially love Nob's little tidbits about the localization process, like his opposition to Mr Mime having a gendered name.
@@GuyNamedSean yeah its honestly really good
What is intresting here and further the connection between the fictional noval in pokemon about Kadabra and the real one from Franz Kafka is that a more acurate translation of the books title wich in the original language ist Die Verwandlung would be The Transformation.
The Methamorphasis is in my opinion a somewhat inacurate translation of the title given that the word Methamorphose exists in german.
I think English localizers went with Metamorphosis because the word has connotations with insect life cycles.
Maybe the translators chose that word over transformation to hint about the bug transformation. But yeah, i agree.
@@MaverickTsuki yeah....but it's not about the bug but about the family connection and human nature. The bug is just an extra....alldough it doas has some meaning I belive.
@@BeaglzRok1 yeah....but it's not about the bug but about the family connection and human nature. The bug is just an extra....alldough it doas has some meaning I belive.
@@MaverickTsuki in fact if I remember it correctly from school Kafka didn't even want to draw attention to the Bug thing in the first place. That is why the first cover of the book under his advice didn't feature the bug at all but rather only the door I belive. So even Kafka didn't thought of the bug that much.
But be as it may I can not put concrete evidence to it, again it's only what I remember from school and I don't want to surch for it at the moment so it could be that I am speaking nonsence here.
they really missed an opportunity to have a Mr. Mime named Marcel in Kalos given who he's based on
This was a very fascinating series that shows us how the real world and pokemon world are related. I think not only a mew video would be awesome to detail the origin of the first truly mythical pokemon, but it would also be cool to make videos about the other mythical or legendary pokemon in the series afterwards.
Remember when the anime said Koffing was discovered in a bath house? Quite a difference from a munitions factory.
You can't really say that you found a toxic gas-like creature from a bullet/gun factory now, that wasn't very cash money for Game Freak.
@@frds_skce More likely some kind of chemical weapons facility (very awkward given Japan's historical involvement in German chemical weapons development).
@@GreyWolfLeaderTW I am now imagining Hitler losing in Pokemon WWII because all their chemical warfare turning into Koffing who then decided to explode and ruin many major strategic spots, allowing the Allies to roll in and basically go, "Lol, noob"
To be fair, it was presented as a “True or False” question in a test. It is likely that the “bath house” option was the incorrect one.
@@matthewmagnani2915 Ah, touché
I would love to see a video about the history of Mew.
It's been 2 years. Did you watch it yet?
I love the aesthetic of early Pokémon. They all interact with humans and the world in such realistic ways. Now it is all sanitized and every interaction between different Pokémon or Pokémon and humans revolves around friendship and cooperation. Which is fine…it’s for kids, but I would totally watch an anime themed in the aesthetic of early Pokémon, where wars happen and Pokémon, being powerful elemental themed monsters, sometimes kill people.
Can always find a way to read the manga. I think there's a few manga, and Pokemon do die in that from graphic combat.
Bewear.
That part hasn't changed at all.
Well dang that was good timing, I just finished part two and was looking for part three and you JUST upload it? Nice.
Yes, please make a separate video compiling all of the canon information about Mew!
you gotta love the amount of passion and care they put into this, even before Pokemon grew into the mega franchise that it is
This was a great series guys, thank you so much for making it! There's a ton of cool stuff in this book, apparently!
Dragonite's status as an avatar of the god of destruction is probably tied to Lance's team of dragon Pokemon all knowing Hyper Beam, or Hakai Kousen, "Destruction Beam".
I shit you not, he turn himself into a kadabra, funniest shit i have ever seen
This is sooo cool! I really wish the pokemon company would put this level of thought into the pokemon series now as it used to back then
It... is... finished......
Surprisingly, Gengar's entry reflect perfectly what his meta is in Pokemon Unite at the moment. Lmfao
Holy duck, I read The Metamorphosis years ago, but I never realized that Kadabra was a reference to it!
I also just thought about it and it makes sense since in Masuda's childhood he liked to catch bugs, so pokemon are like bug collecting.
Which is confirmed in the Let's Go games.
im so disappointed mew wasnt in the book damn :(
What’s the name of the book?
To be fair, Mew was added to the game at the last minute, but with no way to obtain it outside events(as far as people would have known at the time). Putting it in the book actually would have ruined the mystery around Pokemon # 151.
@@oscarledezma231 check the bottom of the description it’s written there
To be fair, it adds to how mystical Mew is.
It was originally intended to be in Red & Green. It was added by a developer in the last minute. I am so glad he did that.
This has been a real treat!!! Thank you for all the hard work in collecting, recording, and editing this information!!!
Well done!
8:25 Then pokémon mystery dungeon happened.
These Official Pokedex videos are too good for us. It was so much fun watching these videos!
These have all been amazing and Nekkra/Nob did such a great job! Thank you DYKG!
18:45
When I was a kid, my brother told me a story behind the tale of Jynx: There was a little girl that lived in a cold regions with mountains who witnessed an Articuno fly by.
@@GiubileiFernando hahaha that's so cool, I'm really proud of my brother now
“Belying” is pronounced “be LYING”, not “bellying”
Next DYKG: Bee lying
She also said "shure-shure" when the screen said "shi-shi"
@@goosebyte That might just be Chinese. It doesn't map well onto English letters, especially due to the problem that Chinese is tonal and sane languages aren't.
Japanese also doesn't map very well onto English. It makes sense, but you have to be trained to read Roumaji correctly and there's 3 different main systems in use and about a dozen hybrid systems that some idiot thinks is better than the other available options. I'm guessing that a similar issue with Chinese is why the screen said "shi-shi" while the reader said "sure-sure".
@@angolin9352 The Japanese differences I am more aware of, which is why off the bat the "r" sound in the word felt off somehow lol. TIL Chinese is a tonal language, thank you for the info!
Good stuff, you folks! Here's looking forward to that video on Mew's origin story!
This has been an amazing series, thanks to all involved. I'm definitely keen for a Mew video.
Going through the whole series, it gives so much context to the world of pokemon! I feel like some pokemon entries of past and present are now more understandable thanks to you and your effort. Fantastic series! Awesome job!
Pokemon's lore is dogshit for a reason
It’s better not to write oneself into a corner in an out of universe interview then trap oneself by over explaining. They’re magical creatures that stand somewhere between real animal intellect and human intellect. Best not to drag too many details of the real world into it.
These latest pokemon videos have been amazing. Seriously, keep up the good work, and of course we'll welcome a video about mew's origin
I think that this is one of the best series of videos you guys have put out. I'll echo the desire for a dedicated Mew episode, as well.
This series was truly amazing! Great collaboration & execution! Would love to see a Mew video, as you mentioned!!
Thanks for bringing this together.
Awesome 👏 👏 !! Thanks for taking the time to do all this job, even bringing Ogasawara-san for this project, excellent job!!
Thank you all for all of the effort you put into this. We truly appreciate this, as the other comments should tell you as well
I want the Mew Lore, it's been my fave Pokemon ever since they first came out. Please
I'm down for a Mew video
THE FACT THE KADABRA ENTRY WAS A FUCKING SHORT STORY AND WED HAVE NEVER KNOWN WITHOUT BASED NOB. THANK YOU SO MUCH NOB!!!
this was realy an awesome watch! all in all it's realy cool and in the same time sad that Pokemon isn't as mystical as it once were back in the 90's
These are the best videos on this channel imo I love these so much. Nob is awesome
This was such an amazing journey.
This is so incredible to hear and after over 20 years of pokémon this is absolutely incredible
This is cool. I wish newer Pokemon had lore this rich
There are many new Pokémon that have a rich lore too.
The idea of a Drowzee muttering to itself under its breath is HORRIFYING
Drowzee is a retail worker who is done with shit confirmed
Can't wait to see what DYKG does next with Pokemon, thanks for this
These three videos were fantastic and riveting. A video of the origin of Mew would be awesome!
This was so awesome all the experiments preformed and information giving detail I loved every episode wish there was one on GSC
I would love to see a full video on mew
Yes, make a Mew episode!
Please do dedicate a video to mew and also if anything like this book could be found for later generations of Pokemon make a video for that too
I'd love for a book like this to turn up for Gen 4. "Arceus. God literally exists. We have sinned and will be cast into the pit for eternity. Because we hooked him up to a fucking treadmill with electrodes. No, not Electrodes. Electrodes"
please never stop this series!
Also, a personal theory:
Maybe some pokémon, like arcanine & the dratini line, were considered legendaries because they had more power than other pokémon and were rarer. This could explain why even in the game some legendary pokémon feel more like rare pokémon.
Thank you so much for this video series!!!
Goddamn this was a great trilogy. Amazing find and amazing work from Nob.
I had no idea they put this much thought into Pokemon. This probably helped a lot when they came out with the show.
Ya the amount of thought they put in the previous gens is simply remarkable
the transition from the original rocket base theme to the let's go one was pretty cool
Amazing work as always! Loved these series so much!
I still think they should just call Female Mr. Mimes "Mrs. Mime"
Who says they're all married (or mated)? They should be Ms. Mime.
