    Can’t decide between a Henry Moore sculpture and transportation? The 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6 is art you can drive. The Streamliner design is one of the most aerodynamics silhouettes on the road, as low as .22 Cd. Look past the curves and arcs and you’ll see squares within squares. And since it’s built on the E-GMP platform with its 800V architecture, it juices quickly at DC fast charge station. With E.P.A. rated range as high as 361 miles, you might not need to very often. Tom Voelk travels to the Phoenix, Arizona press event for a first look at an AWD Limited model with AWD in Transmission Blue.
    Special thanks to drive partner Robber Duffer for spending time to drive so I can get running footage.

Ya, like you said, not my cup of tea. Ironic how the rep said they didn't want to make cars that look like other cars. Great that Hyundai is not charging subscription fees for stuff that came with the car. And the 361 mile range for a rwd model is impressive. I’m hoping that with the change to electric that Hyundai has none of the reliability issues that occurred with their ICE vehicles. That whale tail in the rear, though: that really looks goofy. It's interesting to watch the auto industry try sell $50-$60,000+ vehicles to the public as mainstream. I understand that you'll save $1,000 a year in fuel and a few hundred dollars in maintenance, and there's an intrinsic value to saving the environment (even though I once read an unbiased report that said that total lifetime emissions of the "average" electric vehicles are only about 30-40% better than that of the lifetime emissions of an "average" ICE vehicle). However, ultimately, there's no getting around the fact that you can buy two mainstream ICE vehicles for about the cost of one electric vehicle. I really wonder if we're still in the early adopter phase and as the economies of scale ramp-up we see prices drop, or if they really are preparing us to spend this much money for so little car.

    • @DrivenCarReviews
      @DrivenCarReviews  Год назад +1

      There seems to be no problems selling these at 50-60K. Technology has always started high and become more affordable. There's always Chevy Bolt.

    • @brianthomas2839
      @brianthomas2839 Год назад

      @@DrivenCarReviews I considered a Chevy Bolt, but I live in upstate NY. With no heat pump, I wasn't willing to take the huge hit in range during the late fall-early spring. At the end of the day, 99.8% of us all have a budget when we buy a car, and this really is just a Sonata hybrid with an electric rather than a hybrid powertrain; it's extraordinarily hard to justify paying $20,000 more to save $500 a year in fuel. Not to mention, we could build a heck of a lot more hybrids with the same amount of lithium and have a far greater impact on total emissions going that route. I guess I'm just bitter that we're trying to run before we can walk.

    • @DrivenCarReviews
      @DrivenCarReviews  Год назад

      @@brianthomas2839 Too bad Bolt doesn't work for you, it's a great affordable EV. Ioniq 6 is not "just a Sonata with an electric motor". It really is a completely different animal. I'll argue EVs are not just about saving fuel and lowering emissions. There's added refinement and performance (and convenience if you charge at home). So, for some, that extra money is worth paying. Better features and design nearly always cost more as you move up the ladder. A Frank Lloyd Wright home will always go for more than a Toll Brothers.

      The hatch design is simply easier when loading things, it makes the Polestar 2 a more practical vehicle. I'll assume a big hatch interfered with design or structure.

    I have to disagree with you on the styling. I think it's a rare miss for Hyundai. It just will not age well and it doesn't look that great now. There's no cohesiveness to its proportions and/or details no matter how many 'pixels' it has. The Ionic 5 however, is still my favorite EV on the market right now. Looks cool from all angles. But like most EVs, they are all so expensive with but a few exceptions. As for affordable models, the Bolt CUV is likely the best choice for those looking for a reasonably priced EV option... and it looks great.
