- We've driven plenty of different electric vehicles this year, but as 2023 comes to a close, we're spending time with a car that irked us when it was revealed last year. A car that we didn't think we'd like on paper.
But everything about the IONIQ 6 surprised us - and in a good way.
Here's how its retro-styling, and super-efficient design kept us wanting more.

I love what Hyundai has been doing with its design. They're absolutely killing it with the "retro" style. I very much prefer this to the uninspired Tesla models. Also I love the fact that it is a normal sedan. Not an oversized, overweight, inefficient SUV or cross-over.
You CAN adjust the seat while driving, you can't use the MEMORY seat adjustment while driving and you'll find that's true in most cars with memory seats. Trust me the last thing you want is to hit the wrong memory button when you're 6'2 and your partner is 5'8 and have it start adjusting on you while going down the highway at 75mph
I am seriously considering trading my Bolt EUV for the Ionic 6 next year. I am so glad you did this review because I really trust your thoughts and opinions as reviewers.
I went from a Bolt EV to my Ioniq 6 and it's totally worth it. Ride quality, seat comfort, charging speed monster!!
I thought there were penalties for selling your vehicle too early if you got a federal income tax refund, to prevent people from flipping them

It’s brilliant.
I prefer the IONIQ 6 control layout over Tesla's central computer screen. I prefer tactile controls that don't require you to take your eyes off the road to change settings. Going through layers of menus on a computer screen is antithetical to safe driving, IMO.

This looks like an actual car, not like most "cars" these days which look like military vehicles.
This is the EV which truly tempts me from my current Kia Soul EV. It may not have the cargo room, but man, this really strikes my tickle.
Looks like a cool car but the lack of a rear hatch is pretty much a deal breaker for me. I don't so much care if it's shaped like a sedan but the trunk restricts what you can carry far too much.
I would buy this car with all the bells and whistles but I would spec it with the 18 inch wheels and if they refuse, I would buy some light weight aftermarket 18 inch wheels like I did for my Mini Cooper electric.
Excellent review! The two of you touched upon just about anything and everything one would want to consider when looking at the Ioniq6.
Not only do large wheels kill your range, they also man you are spending more on tires every time you buy them for as long as you drive the car.
Easier to bend a wheel to head to replace a BMW 20-inch, not fun
The large wheels don't only kill the range, but also are less comfortable to drive (less air between street and rim in, a nutshell). The 20" rims are worse than the small 18" in every respect but looks.
Mine came with the black 20" rims (First Edition only) that are gorgeous though... 😂

On the “Tesla isn’t a driver’s car” comment - it’s because Tesla doesn’t think humans should be at the controls. Which is a great theory. But it isn’t ready yet, and lots of people still like to _drive_ their car. (My wife doesn’t even use cruise control, much less any more advanced driver-assistance systems. When we bought a used Tesla Model S a few years ago, we didn’t bother with one with even Autopilot 1.)
@@markplott4820 That doesn’t mean everyone wants to use it. Sure, it will be great when a majority of vehicles on the road are SAE Level 5 self-driving. But even then, there will be people who want to be in complete control.
@@markplott4820 Sure, some short easy sections are doable. How about LA up to Boise and then over to Boston, in deep winter? FSD seems to only work on sunny warm days with nicely marked roads.

@@markplott4820 I can’t get a M3 for $22k. I would wager extraordinarily few could. That price is based on getting both the US federal tax credit and some states’ maximum “low income” credit/rebate. Most people who qualify for the low income rebates don’t have enough taxable income to get the full federal credit - so applying both is disingenuous and misleading.
Most ICE cars last well over 50k miles - don’t spread the same FUD that oil companies spread about EVs.
“First maintenance at 400k”? In what universe? Yes, EVs can go a long time without “scheduled maintenance” - but none will go 400k. Even if the battery lasts that long (all the 200k+ Teslas I’ve heard about have had at least one battery replacement) you’ll want to check your brake fluid well before 400k.
I like how you continue to show the small details(AC outlet) while talking about other things; packs a lot of information using multiple senses simultaneously; well done!
Now if only it came in a station wagon version.. That would also be the same 'retro' era look/feel, but with even more flexibility of a hatchback.
I would buy a station wagon version. Clear sight lines, and easy to load rear cargo area!

Excited that you finally got a chance to review the Ioniq 6! On the topic of 90's styling, I wonder when we'll see a custom Lisa Frank wrap.
If it was a liftback, the Ioniq 6 would be *the* car. There's really nothing about it you can diss. Handles well, good range, good efficiency, distinctive *sleek* styling, not a crossover, good interface. (If it hasn't been replaced by some miserable puffy oinker, I'll think about one later in the decade.)
There is another EV with a hatchback… can’t remember what it’s called… hmmm i remember it’s the best selling car or something like that… hmmm🤔

Regarding the charging, the car does never hit 350kW of course but is limited by the current it can take. And that's a nice thing that both cars have a different voltage, but take the same current and can therefore charge from 10% to 80% in the same time as chargetime is mostly dependent on the current, and not so much the voltage. The fact that their is a voltage difference also shows the brilliance of the architecture as it can handle a wide range of voltages. If only they, and Tesla, could fix the charging at superchargers.
And if you have a small battery, a standard range car, you don't even lose much time at a 400V/150kW charger, it will hit that 150kW and still charge from 10% to 80% in less than 25 minutes.

Efficient? Yes. Super efficient? No. The classic Ioniq was more efficient for example and a Tesla Model 3 will beat it as well.

Legit this looks like a great car. So happy to see something that isn't a crossover. I'm a sedan fan through and through, I don't need something bigger. And the fact that Hyundai has finally made a more affordable EV, that isn't a crossover, is very tempting. Now if only I could find a place to charge it at my apartment...

Kate and Nikki, this was truly delightful. I had my eye on an Ioniq 6 but it was out of my price range. Glad to see the price coming down on it. It is a very fun car to drive and I love it's - as you say - aspirational retro look and feel.

I was questioning this car at first. Now I'm kinda liking it. Simular to my issues with the bolt, I wasn't sure on the looks, now its kinda growing on me.
On the wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay front, we are finally seeing some movement. The new Hyundai Kona is the first car with a widescreen infotainment system from the group that does actually support it and acoording to the release notes, the most recent update for the Ioniq 6 will bring it to that car as well. Haven't gotten that update myself yet, so can't confirm that it actually works.
The reason it took so long is not because it was not supported by the system, it was a disagreement with either Apple or Google (haven't seen which of the 2 demands it) that when you have a wireless device connected and you press the physical map button in the car, one of those 2 demands that you launch their platform instead of the built-in navigation. And Hyundai refused to do that. Not sure what the final solution is.

Well, you did it. I didn't like the side look of the Ioniq 6, but that cinematic intro looked amazing - maybe that will be my Bolt replacement if no other sedan like car comes out by then

8:44 One of the other cost saving benefits to having the window switches in the middle is so they don’t have to engineer and make different wiring harnesses and door panels for LHD and RHD markets. This was very common with European and Japanese cars in the 1980s and 90s.
There are not many half-hour review videos I willingly sit through, but I very much enjoy riding along with these two. The conversation is just so engrossing and spiced with lovely humor. Thanks for all you do!
I still really love the look of the GM EV1, and this looks like a highly evolved version of one, so I’m definitely saving my pennies for one of these.
The rear styling with the sloping trunk reminds me of the 1978 Buick Century Salon or Oldsmobile Cutlass Salon.
Apparently, it was the Saab 92001 and not so much the Citroen DS that was the main inspiration for the design team. Gorgeous like the DS, nevertheless.
The sedan shape was designed specifically because it is the best shape for handling and aerodynamics/energy efficiency and it is frustrating that there aren't many in the range of EVs.
I'd like to test drive one. A mechanic who posted a thorough online review of the Ioniq 6 thought that the cooling systems were overly complex and not as efficient as those in Teslas.
Tesla’s systems are just much better designs. I don’t think most of the competition will have a system in 5 years that matches today’s Teslas.
I'm a Model Y owner and while I personally like the Tela ecosystem over many others I have to say that other brands and offerings out there do have some compelling vehicles that will appeal to many buyers not wanting the noticeability of a Tesla or Tesla's long term unchanged styling. Some want more levers and buttons while I personally prefer minimalism.
I love the Ioniq 6 because it just looks like an everyday car. I recently come to think this about the Nissan Ariya. Even the VW ID4 has a general classic vehicle look to it that isn't trying to be as different as others we may see on the road where we go...yep, that's an EV.
I think to a degree while the Ioniq 6 does have a retro 90s look to it, it looks like a mashup between a 911 and a Hyundai Elantra/Sonata. That's not really a bad thing. We know why they designed the car that way. Similar to how the Mercedes concept EQXX is designed to achieve low drag. I've seen the Ioniq 6 on the roads and it looks like a fun and capable car. It doesn't have enough interior space for me but neither did the Model 3 for that matter which is why I chose the larger Model Y. I do think this vehicle is going to be simply perfect for a lot of buyers wanting a sporty look, efficiency and a decent amount of range.

A lot of people think this car is ugly but then turn around and praise old school Porsches.
The range of my AWD, 20 inch wheels, at 100kph is 285 miles going up and down mountains.

That’s one thing I really appreciated about the Nissan Ariya: you could order the top trim with the most efficient rim/tire combo.
I didnt understand what you didnt like about this car way back then. This is the ideal Evolved vehicle, efficient transport for the majority. Reviewing for the new-car buyers, the commuters, especially if you got to review the lower spec, long rang with efficient aero wheels.
I think it would be really fun to see the te staff compete to get the best laptime! Is that in your budget? Maybe the BBC needs a new car show to fund?
I would love it, but my partner (who's very artistic and visually oriented) instantly vetoed it. Hyundai, please make it an actual hatchback and get rid of the 'bent' line that runs down the length of the car.

Splendid review. Lots of familiar landmarks too! There's a lot to like here but I'm not sad to have the Ioniq 5 for the hatch versatility. Calling it an SUV is a disservice IMO.
Do not understand the retro styling comments about the 90s, but then weird comparisons to the 1960s DS6. Like, these could not be more different.
Amazon has several key fob cover options for the Ioniq 6. I guess it's a common gripe.
Always looking for the next car.....Toyota Prius Prime or Camry, or the Hyundai 6, this car looks very promising.
Still want to drive my Civic SI just for a few more miles.

Still not sure about the styling but I'd get the Ioniq 5.
I've seen a few German RUclipsrs have reviews of the ID.2 and the video I watched didn't include any driving, but did have actual proper buttons.
They did mention that after the ID.2 Volkswagen were planning to release something smaller that costs under 20k.
What does Transport Evolved know about that?

Can't figure out Hyundai with their wireless Carplay/Auto. My Santa Cruz has wireless, but if I went to the bigger "upgraded" infotainment, it loses the wireless. It was one of the reasons I chose the trim level I did. It's very odd...
The autosteering of my ioni5 is swaying. Is it different with the ioniq6 or a software issue that both have? Space-wise I would always prefer the ioniq5 as we get 2 foldable/segmented kayaks and a kid in there.
The Ioniq 6 starts to sway a bit between 160 and 170km/h (at night). I also think it should be fixable in software, but wouldn't put too much hope in Hyundai.
If the small battery variant only has a 480V pack, and it can do the 18 minute charge trick, does it not mean that the 800V pack faster charging brouhaha was complete horse54i7? Is the 18 minute charge process just abusing the battery? Bjorn seems to think so. Has anyone run EV6 taxi service to examine the degradation from hypercharging?
A conventional rule of thumb is don't charge batteries faster than 1hour if you want them to last a long time.
Some batteries are more tolerant of fast charging than others.
Your e-niro range comparisons have me worried. I am about to order an ioniq 6 and assumed it would get at least into the ballcourt of my old e-niro. In the UK we get no choice on tyre size 😕

I am thankful the Hyundai Group has been having success with EVs. Watching GM, Ford, VW, and others struggle has been frustrating because it is bad for the consumer to just have one or maybe two choices. I was really hoping the switch to EVs for the world would bring in more companies so that consumers had more than a few options, but as time marched on I started feeling like the choices will be BYD and Tesla.
While I agree the Ioniq 6 would have cool hatch, I get the Hyundai Group already had a couple of EV hatchback options. It has been interesting to see the reactions to back end of the Ioniq 6. It seems to divide people.
I am going to be interested in seeing how the Model 3 refresh does here in the US, because in China and Europe it has gotten very high praise. Many saying it is the best vehicle you can buy for the money, ICE or EV. I think it is another example of products getting better for consumers.
I would love to see TE do a EV progress review starting at 2010 and jumping 5 years forward and keep going until you hit 2025. I get so tired of hearing ICE say how much better it is when ICE has had massive R&D funding for a hundred years. ICE is a very mature tech, which means it is hard to get much improvements at this point. While electric vehicles may have appeared a century ago, the kind of funding ICE has enjoyed has only been seen in the past decade. This makes EV tech a young tech or under developed tech, so the infusion of massive funding and resources into EV tech is getting much better ROI than ICE. I think seeing where EV tech was at in 2010, 2015, 2020, and 2025, would paint a very clear picture of why EVs are the future and the US will be most EVs somewhere in the future and why "mainstream" people in the 2030's will likely be wondering anyone is still buying ICE vehicles.
@@markplott4820 I think both Ford Motors Company and General Motors have been on a slow multi decade long death spiral.
I owned Ford's in the 80's and 90's. FMC promised big improvement, the quality is job one has been a failure for decades now. Barra and GM has kept the fine tradition of bad leadership at GM going.
It is frustrating to watch most American builders going down. Manufacturing has needed a huge boost in the USA and it seems only Tesla is doing well. I support Tesla even with the public mess that is Musk when it comes to many social/political issues, because we need Tesla to be successful because Ford and GM cannot seem to get their sh*t together.
I believe in Tesla and the people there. I would welcome Apple trying to make an EV. Rumors of Amazon thinking of doing an EV is fine, not Bezos fan, but more US EV companies would be a good thing.
"Connect the cable." Does that mean that I can plug an aux cable from my MP3 player and listen to music in a Hyundai IONIQ like I can in my Kia Soul? That would be awesome!

Despite what it says on some of the Hyundai marketing materials, eGMP charges at 240ish kW, not 350... Can't believe you got that wrong, guys.
You get 240+ by using a 350kW charger. So the exact wording of "18 minutes at a 350kW charger" is accurate.
@@stevewausa It was also incorrectly stated a couple of times that it "charges at 350kW", which is what I am saying. New owners see the 240 rate on a 350 unit and think there is a problem, incorrectly. I KNOW the team knows better. Just complaining about this glaring error.

It's strange to hear you talking about a car reflecting the 1990s as being "retro", I would have thought of something that reflects the 1960s, I feel that the Ford Mustang that came out in 2005 was the best retro vehicle I've seen.
They look nice and I like the faster charging...but I think my wife and I are going to stick to our 2019&2020 Hyundai ioniq Electrics (Wind knives)😊
Also I can't wait for more manufacturers to offer LFP or Hybrid LFP/Ternary batteries! That's when I will consider upgrading my current EVs
I feel like Hyundai/Kia are the only/first car company to really build cars with Millenial nostalgia in mind. "Retro" still means 50s/60s/70s designs for boomers to most companies. It's questionable to me how many Millenials can actually afford these cars, but I just think its really cool. And it makes these *aspirational* vehicles for a whole group of people who have never really had a car specifically aimed at them. Really interesting.
It’s gen x nostalgia. If they are looking at the 90s. And gen x are buying right now, yes, as well as millennials (they are 27-42 years old so they aren’t babies).
@@Natalie.D Gen X nostalgia would also include the 70s IMO. Vehicles like the Camaro and the Dodge Charger felt like Gen X nostalgia to me. But yeah, theres definite cross over into the 80s.

I'm pretty sure in the UK market they only offer the big inefficient wheels and they only offer the largest battery size. Absolutely no idea why.
I don’t get the comparisons to a 90s car. The first time I saw this car I immediately thought of a 1980s Porsche 911 (my dream car as a kid; I owned a remote control version that only went forward and a rounded reverse - Ahh, 80s kids toy tech). Once someone compared the profile-to-rear swoop to a Saab, I also saw that if I squinted. But it’s definitely Porsche (although Hyundai described it as their take on 1940s car design).
I wish Hyundai had stylized the front a little more because it already looks a little dated to me.…I think that’s something they should update in the next refresh.

I'm curious why you think the Tesla M3 people would get upset about the ride/handling? I don't think I've ever heard a Tesla M3 driver that didn't complain about the ride needing work. And from the reviews of the revised M3 that is already on the market in Europe, that is something Tesla made big changes to.

If it had a hatchback/liftback - I'd be all over it! We have been renting an EV6, and another miss is that when you're in Lv 0 (coasting when you lift your right foot) - you lack *any* regen on the brake pedal?! What are they thinking?
Isn't that the point of coasting? Let the car roll with minimal loss of speed and no energy consumption? Then use regen when you actually want to slow down?
@@David-qs5ii right, you coast when you lift your right foot. But when you need to slow down, it should have regen blended on the brake pedal - but the EV6 doesn't do this.
I have been wanting this car, but the trunk is a no deal for me. I'm a hatchback enthusiast and that does not open like a hatchback. My current car is a Nissan Leaf and we can fit tons in the back of that car.

Hyundai has been selling cars in the US since '86. At this point, they're not that young. They've come a ling way since the Excel.
There is a media story about a 2022 IONIQ 5 which required a battery replacement at the cost of $60,000 Canadian.
This has been reported at several sites including the Vancouver City News under the title; *”Vancouver EV owner shares cautionary tale after car deemed ‘total loss’”*
I remember hearing about this (I live in Vancouver) - Global News reached out to Hyundai and even they said that didn't sound right. It sounds like a situation where the dealership or mechanic shop was not being very accurate about the actual cost. Something fishy going on there, definitely not the norm!

It has the same information about the dealer and the insurance, but Nikki also explains the probable cause of the battery damage when driving in deep snow.
I watched the Ioniq Guy video. Even though he did a lot of talking, he didn’t add anything compared to the new Transport Evolved video except to unfairly put more blame on the car owner, Kyle Hsu.
Tesla model 3 isn't a drivers car eh? I think that means different things to different people. To me the way a car handles is #1 in the "drivers car" discussion. The steering wheel is the connection to the road. If the steering of the Hyundai is too light, and artificially so, it's below the Model 3 on the EV drivers car list.
The Model 3 ride is terrible. If it was better, I would at least consider one.
@DANNYMAND1 .....I definitely prefer the suspension in my Model S. But then the Model 3's handle better then my S. There's always a trade off in that area. I'm hearing that the new 3 has a much more compliant suspension and also doesn't handle as well as the outgoing model.
