Yahtzee's Alien design is kind of adorable. The line over their face makes 'em look like they've got a little grin and it's just a pleasure to watch them gaily dance around on the screen when he's talking about them.
I know I'm a bit late but, I would totally buy a tighter alien campaign that gave us more to do as the xenomorph. Collecting living creatures for reproduction without being caught. Defending the hive from marines and predators. There's so much that could be done with that and it's never even been touched.

Choleric Raven Exactly what I was thinking. AvP2 had something similar in various multiplayer modes but they didn't do much with it. It was more of a really long respawn mechanic that only affected xenomorphs :P

Having a stand-alone Predator game with Arkham/SoM combat and stealth would be amazing (done properly, of course), and designers are seriously missing out.
They tried it with Concrete Jungle back in the PS2/Xbox and were probably turned off by the fact that the game didn't sell well. But that doesn't have much to do with the type of game it was rather than the fact that it was one of the most broken games I have ever player. If I could have a Predator game with SoM style combat but with a greater emphasis on stealth I would probably meld together with my PS4 controller.
I've seen some of the gameplay of Concrete Jungle, and it seems too arcadey. The Predator is a hunter, who stalks in the shadows, using terror to sow discord in the ranks, while picking them off one by one. A lot like the Arkham series (they even call it "Predator" gameplay), I think terror and morale should have a lot to do with it. Kill a grunt, string him up, and the others might lose their composure, but if a sergeant or captain is there, they can keep it together a little longer. Take out the officer first, and have them fall to pieces. Also Roaring should be comboed with the kills to terrorize the enemies. Of course, there should be segments of Pred smack down, as they are taller and much stronger than people. It would be interesting to pit Predators against other Alien species (maybe a cameo Xeno, but not more than a couple). It has a lot of potential.
Hopefully, the success of Alien Isolation will prompt a renewed interest in the franchise as a whole and we might get to see this game in the next 2-3 years. But I think that aside from the tremendous potential it had, what's probably holding the game back is that compared to the Aliens franchise by itself is much more popular in the mainstream than the Predator franchise. Concrete Jungle came out 1 or 2 years after the first AvP movie so interest was somewhat higher in the franchise than it is now. Though I think a new Predator movie is in the works (I heard about it on twitter, could be rumors though) and that could definitely prompt a developer/publisher to take interest in the license and put out a quality game.
Predator Concrete Jungle was actually pretty good on the PS2. Forgotten for the most part because it got a little repetitive l, but the controls were solid and you moved like a real Predator would with excellent agility and speed.

Imagine what they could've done if they spent the same amount of money on an alien-only game? 3x longer, better AI, better 3D environments, ability to flank marines from random vents. You could even set it up with Rainbow 6-style gameplay, where you control a team of 2 other aliens and can have them disable lights, cameras, automated weapons platforms and attack from 3 different directions.... It had a solid stealth mechanic and even if you fucked up the stealth it was hardly ever a game over. The enemies would just be tougher and it wouldn't be as satisfying to get your kill.
I can tell you, in AVP2, for the PC, the part when you start as a facehugger hiding from enemies and eliminating them with stealth to end up becoming a big deadly xenomorph is by far my favourite! Alien Alien Yup, just search it up. They HAD to have a name, after all, being an alien species. "Xenomorph" is just a title Weyland gave the aliens, but it makes that they wouldn't have a name of their own, given they are a WMD gone out of control created by the Engineers/Mala'kaks.
Lets face it. Aliens vs. Predator 2 (from 2001) was the best AvP for PC. Great atmosphere (especially when you play as a Marine. you really feel that I'm so irreversibly screwed atmosphere), good campaigns, nice voice acting, good plot, exoskeletons, and more. Primal Hunt (the expansion) didn't have a good campaign, but the already sweet multi from the original AvP2 was taken by the expansion and kicked into nitro.
Those first levels playing as a marine, stalking through poorly lit corridors, motion detector beeping as if it's your own heartbeat. Then the detector starts beeping faster and you fire at a moving shadow. Only a chain swinging in the breeze. some time later a rat crosses your path and at some point you fire at a set of pipes that look like a Xeno-morph head. The tension builds slowly, but when they do finally appear, it's utterly terrifying!
Amen. Despite its flaws, AvP 06 is way better than A:CM. I wish they didn't cancel the other project they were running in tandem with A:CM. A third person team game that played a bit like Killing Floor and Left 4 Dead. Each marine had a specialization and you had to advance to your objective with a small group of other marines. You could have a heavy weapons marine with a smart gun to really keep the xenos at bay, a technical marine that would repair machines, bypass door locks and cut open or weld shut doors and other openings, things of that nature. it sounded then and still sounds now, totally awesome, but with delays to both games, Sega decided to cut one concept to focus funds and resources on one title. So they axed the L4D concept and went with giving Gearbox all the cash for their A:CM game. PIty most of the money went to Borderlands 2 development and they shat out A:CM on the cheap.
So picture this- An open-world game Cross hunting trophy game where you play a predator and get to go to whatever world you want to hunt random species including earth with humans and LV-426 with a Xeno hive. And when not on a planet you’re in your travel ship with a trophy room showcasing all the skulls you’ve taken, a loadout room for your gear, and obviously the bridge where you can travel to different places. You can craft gear on your ship but there’s also a smaller more hands-on crafting system whenever you’re on a planet using the materials that are available there. Including gathering vines and shit to make large net traps ect ect. And there’s a multiplayer system where your ship can dock with someone else’s and you can play in groups of up to five or six Predators. Maybe you could also at the start of the game pick which tribe you’re a part of out of a range of four and as a result have a different starting planet/quest and gear. …wouldn’t that be cool? ;w;

The "Aliens" have no formal name on purpose, and the belief that they're called Xenomorphs is due to a widespread misconception.

I honestly only liked this game for the multiplayer, it was fun orchestrating mass murder if you and your friends were jumping around as Predators or being equally shitting your pants as a pack of marines all back to back like the Scooby Doo Gang, I thought it had a fun concept that fell short in the story department but I still had fun.
The Shield Bar was regenerating. That right there was revolutionary for FPS gaming, as everyone always had health bars. The introduction of a "buffer" for your health changed everything up, as now you could assault an enemy position even if did have minimal health, as you had that regenerating buffer to keep you going. As for the list, that was the list of FPS games in general, not just Halo. Those are the four main problems Yahtzee has with FPS games.

Yeah but I was never a fan of that bird kind of perspective it is played on. Love the action though. But I seek stuff like alien in avp, prototype, skyrim (darker gameplay), and Darkness 2. I just need to keep my eye on any potential new games.
My favorite memory of this game is one of the later predator missions where i'm in a corridor and an endless stream of xenomorphs are coming at me, and i have them bottlenecked in a doorway and am just getting trophy kill after trophy kill for about half an hour before i get bored and start moving forward. and i still got a shit ranking because it decided no to count all the trophy kills i performed.
Would love a good Predator game, a xenomorph game, and a good Alien's game where you are the marines and you fight only... ONLY... Xenomorphs (Fucking Aliens colonial marines) That would be great. If you have to mash all 3 together, then make each story at least 10-15 hours long and really well done in the story driven aspect, if you have to throw in multiplayer make it 24 player where 12 are Marines 3 are predators and 9 are aliens. That way it feels like an AVP game. GOD DAMMIT PEOPLE THIS CANNOT BE THAT HARD! Indie companies make awesome games and I feel the only way this can be done is if an indie company gets the permissions does a kick starter and put forth the effort to make the game as good as it can be.
Warsc2k Not to be the smart guy, but Xenomorphs technically can't see. It's unknown how they're capable of rationalizing their environment, but based on what I've seen in gameplay for Alien: Isolation, it's majority sound-based. I've seen people get looked right over by it and it turns and leaves them alone. Anytime they got caught was when they sprinted (made noise) or they actually touched it (stepped on the tail).

Halo is what started the use of regenerating health and two weapon slots. Two other major things that are wrong with current FPS's. The entire list being: -Cover mechanics -Iron sight aiming -Regenerating health -Two weapon slots As far as I remember, i forget all of them.
I would like to see him review Natural Selection 2 when it comes out...it fixes the wall climbing orientation thing (which doesn't make sense IMO but i suppose works well to fight motion sickness...)
that last part about the predator campaign i totally agree with. a predator game (and JUST predator) would be an awesome stealth game, they should totally make that.
@TenInchBig It's even less repetitive in games where the community can get really involved like in halo or stagecraft where they can make maps, games modes, ect. to share with the community and keep the game fresh.
I agree so much, the marine campaign was snoozeville, I hate it how every game developer thinks that since CoD and Halo were so popular they will instantly be crowned king of the universe for doing the exact same thing. When really it turns into a nightmare situation in which every game is, or is trying to be the bloody same. Playing as the spooky monsters were where the game shone. If we wanted to be a space marine we'd play Halo or something
I played the Jaguar version of the game when I was 13--as I recall, it was piss hard, and I didn't know the controls, and I ended up not getting anywhere because I'm told I have to play a certain way or suffer consequences for not being honorable or not sneaky enough... or because I would be underpowered because I'm not either the alien or the predator.
- I speeded through the campaign in the hardest difficulty with no problem at all. And they couldn't do a thing to stop me (except shotgun blast and the occasional ohhai-sentry gun). One tail swipe to knock them of their feet to engage instant kill or two to kill them.
I did when I was younger but my dad never wanted me to play as the humans. Only the alien or the predator, which was fine with me. The predator was the only one I really liked any way but after awhile I asked him why I couldn't, he said that the the human campaign was to scary for me. So my dad was ok with his 5 year old son learning to kill his fellow man but not ok with me having the off chance of having a nightmare? Logic!

I think Yahtzee might be on to something with the 3rd person Predator game. I know they've already made similar Predator games like concrete Jungle, but a game with a decent production value and a coherent story would be pretty nice. I'd like a game that actually delves into the Predator culture beyond the normal "We're honorable hunters that value fighting prowess and make trophies out of stuff." If it was well done I'd spend my hard earned cash on it.
Pretty sure that by all accounts, the Classic 1999 AvP is superior in almost every way except graphics. Better pacing, smoother combat, no 10-second finishing moves, and non-contextual super-jump for the Predator. AvP 2 also did quite well. I remember watching dad play that one briefly.
I actually Loved this game. Got little to say about the singleplayer. the scare moments were fun and effective the first few times, yes, and it felt awesome for me to have a gun turret at the side, whilst the predator campaign,well, it's awesome being one, and alien, didn't remember much of it...But the multiplayer was great for as much as there were players. To me it felt balanced, I could take on as anyone or be taken down as anyone by anyone, despite all the complaints I hear from random folk

When i was a kid I saw the poster for AvP and tried to deduce which was which. My logic was the one with the sci fi gizmos was the alien and the animal looking one the predator. I was wrong.
Okay here's an idea if anybody thinks of another Alien vs Predator game, just a thought but um, people are playing this for the titular monsters, not for some stupid humans! They aren't asking for a campaign focusing on the colonial marines, so when you say there will be cake, don't give us coffee instead, I hate coffee!
Say what you want but the Colonial Marines campaign in AvP2 was pretty fun. It was intense and pretty scary at times. Since the Aliens were absolutely fucking deadly.
Well in AvP 2 the marine was kinda fun cus he was one of the most vulnerable, so rather than having a Gears of War type experience of testosterone and guns, it's a rather more frightening and jumpy experience.
Running and gunning keeps the game fast-paced and tense. It's fun to run around like a complete idiot sometimes dodging all the rockets and bullets. As for the shield, it takes away any penalty for getting hit. Regenerating health is just kinda bad. There's no thought of the consequences other than the current firefight. If you get knocked down to 1hp, you just go hide for a few seconds and BAM! back to full health. Health kits keep things tense and exciting, because you need to be careful.

The gameplay already exists in tons of games. Would be pretty simple with the Unreal or Source engine. Makes you wonder why nobody's done it.

Batman's stealth sequences is CALLED "predator gameplay," so yeah, it would actually be appropriate for the Yautja to emulate in a video game.

I wish they didn't cancel the other project they were running in tandem with A:CM. A third person team game that played a bit like Killing Floor and Left 4 Dead. Each marine had a specialization and you had to advance to your objective with a small group of other marines. You could have a heavy weapons marine with a smart gun to really keep the xenos at bay, a technical marine that would repair machines, bypass door locks and cut open or weld shut doors and other openings, things of that nature.
it sounded then and still sounds now, totally awesome, but with delays to both games, Sega decided to cut one concept to focus funds and resources on one title. So they axed the L4D concept and went with giving Gearbox all the cash for their A:CM game. PIty most of the money went to Borderlands 2 development and they shat out A:CM on the cheap.

So picture this-
An open-world game Cross hunting trophy game where you play a predator and get to go to whatever world you want to hunt random species including earth with humans and LV-426 with a Xeno hive. And when not on a planet you’re in your travel ship with a trophy room showcasing all the skulls you’ve taken, a loadout room for your gear, and obviously the bridge where you can travel to different places.
You can craft gear on your ship but there’s also a smaller more hands-on crafting system whenever you’re on a planet using the materials that are available there. Including gathering vines and shit to make large net traps ect ect. And there’s a multiplayer system where your ship can dock with someone else’s and you can play in groups of up to five or six Predators.
Maybe you could also at the start of the game pick which tribe you’re a part of out of a range of four and as a result have a different starting planet/quest and gear.

You mean the ones called "Aliens", right? Those aren't actually called Xenomorphs. Xenomorph literally just means "other shape" and essentially can refer to any alien being. The "Aliens" have no formal name on purpose, and the belief that they're called Xenomorphs is due to a widespread misconception.

It is completely irrelevant that xenomorph isn't its official name because that is what everyone knows them by.
In universe, they aren't called Xenomorphs any more than any other alien race would be. Xenomorph is the "fan name" that people attached because they came to the incorrect conclusion that that's the name. If you watch the scene in Aliens where the term "xenomorph" is used, it's obvious that the person using the term doesn't know what he's actually talking about. This misconception makes it very irritating to try to actually use the word "xenomorph" in proper usage, because everyone just thinks of an Alien.
It's only 3 more syllables to say "the Aliens from Alien" anyhow, and unless you're one of those short attention-spanned imbeciles that Yatzee is always going on about, 3 syllables doesn't matter.

Alien is generic and easy to misunderstand. (btw: 'the Alien from Aliens' is eight syllables, Xenomorph is 3, which is 5 syllables under. Not three.) Bug, thing, mammal, all of the terms are also equally generic to Xenomorph, kinda like everyone in the movies had no clue what the hell they were talking about.

I honestly only liked this game for the multiplayer, it was fun orchestrating mass murder if you and your friends were jumping around as Predators or being equally shitting your pants as a pack of marines all back to back like the Scooby Doo Gang, I thought it had a fun concept that fell short in the story department but I still had fun.

The Shield Bar was regenerating. That right there was revolutionary for FPS gaming, as everyone always had health bars. The introduction of a "buffer" for your health changed everything up, as now you could assault an enemy position even if did have minimal health, as you had that regenerating buffer to keep you going.
As for the list, that was the list of FPS games in general, not just Halo. Those are the four main problems Yahtzee has with FPS games.

My favorite memory of this game is one of the later predator missions where i'm in a corridor and an endless stream of xenomorphs are coming at me, and i have them bottlenecked in a doorway and am just getting trophy kill after trophy kill for about half an hour before i get bored and start moving forward. and i still got a shit ranking because it decided no to count all the trophy kills i performed.

Would love a good Predator game, a xenomorph game, and a good Alien's game where you are the marines and you fight only... ONLY... Xenomorphs (Fucking Aliens colonial marines) That would be great. If you have to mash all 3 together, then make each story at least 10-15 hours long and really well done in the story driven aspect, if you have to throw in multiplayer make it 24 player where 12 are Marines 3 are predators and 9 are aliens. That way it feels like an AVP game. GOD DAMMIT PEOPLE THIS CANNOT BE THAT HARD! Indie companies make awesome games and I feel the only way this can be done is if an indie company gets the permissions does a kick starter and put forth the effort to make the game as good as it can be.

Warsc2k Not to be the smart guy, but Xenomorphs technically can't see. It's unknown how they're capable of rationalizing their environment, but based on what I've seen in gameplay for Alien: Isolation, it's majority sound-based. I've seen people get looked right over by it and it turns and leaves them alone. Anytime they got caught was when they sprinted (made noise) or they actually touched it (stepped on the tail).

Of all the various bloody videos I've seen for games that I've either played or have been interested in.....yours made the most fucking sense. Species deathmatch in the 1999 avp is some of the most fun I've ever had with a game, poor marines.
Halo is what started the use of regenerating health and two weapon slots. Two other major things that are wrong with current FPS's. The entire list being:
-Cover mechanics
-Iron sight aiming
-Regenerating health
-Two weapon slots
As far as I remember, i forget all of them.

Bf3, Crysis, Mass Effect, also used this regenerating health system. All of those are considered good games, and not tarnished by CoD's image.

I would like to see him review Natural Selection 2 when it comes out...it fixes the wall climbing orientation thing (which doesn't make sense IMO but i suppose works well to fight motion sickness...)

Marines Nightmare campaign was impossibly difficult. Far more than the Predator/Alien campaigns.

I agree so much, the marine campaign was snoozeville, I hate it how every game developer thinks that since CoD and Halo were so popular they will instantly be crowned king of the universe for doing the exact same thing. When really it turns into a nightmare situation in which every game is, or is trying to be the bloody same. Playing as the spooky monsters were where the game shone. If we wanted to be a space marine we'd play Halo or something

I played the Jaguar version of the game when I was 13--as I recall, it was piss hard, and I didn't know the controls, and I ended up not getting anywhere because I'm told I have to play a certain way or suffer consequences for not being honorable or not sneaky enough... or because I would be underpowered because I'm not either the alien or the predator.
- I speeded through the campaign in the hardest difficulty with no problem at all. And they couldn't do a thing to stop me (except shotgun blast and the occasional ohhai-sentry gun).
One tail swipe to knock them of their feet to engage instant kill or two to kill them.

I did when I was younger but my dad never wanted me to play as the humans. Only the alien or the predator, which was fine with me. The predator was the only one I really liked any way but after awhile I asked him why I couldn't, he said that the the human campaign was to scary for me. So my dad was ok with his 5 year old son learning to kill his fellow man but not ok with me having the off chance of having a nightmare? Logic!

Why can't a company just make an ALIENS game where you don't play as some stupid human but instead you play as a xenomorph from facehugger to queen, similarly to the AVP2 alien campaign where you start as a facehugger and you have to impregnate someone. JUST GIVE US WHAT WE WANT GAME COMPANIES

Imagine a game that took the total run time of all three campaigns combined and starred only the Xenomorph. I'd certainly play that. The Xenomorph campaign was the only fun part of the whole experience.
I think Yahtzee might be on to something with the 3rd person Predator game. I know they've already made similar Predator games like concrete Jungle, but a game with a decent production value and a coherent story would be pretty nice.
I'd like a game that actually delves into the Predator culture beyond the normal "We're honorable hunters that value fighting prowess and make trophies out of stuff." If it was well done I'd spend my hard earned cash on it.

Pretty sure that by all accounts, the Classic 1999 AvP is superior in almost every way except graphics. Better pacing, smoother combat, no 10-second finishing moves, and non-contextual super-jump for the Predator. AvP 2 also did quite well. I remember watching dad play that one briefly.
I actually Loved this game. Got little to say about the singleplayer. the scare moments were fun and effective the first few times, yes, and it felt awesome for me to have a gun turret at the side, whilst the predator campaign,well, it's awesome being one, and alien, didn't remember much of it...But the multiplayer was great for as much as there were players. To me it felt balanced, I could take on as anyone or be taken down as anyone by anyone, despite all the complaints I hear from random folk

When i was a kid I saw the poster for AvP and tried to deduce which was which. My logic was the one with the sci fi gizmos was the alien and the animal looking one the predator. I was wrong.

Say what you want but the Colonial Marines campaign in AvP2 was pretty fun. It was intense and pretty scary at times. Since the Aliens were absolutely fucking deadly.

Well in AvP 2 the marine was kinda fun cus he was one of the most vulnerable, so rather than having a Gears of War type experience of testosterone and guns, it's a rather more frightening and jumpy experience.

Running and gunning keeps the game fast-paced and tense. It's fun to run around like a complete idiot sometimes dodging all the rockets and bullets. As for the shield, it takes away any penalty for getting hit. Regenerating health is just kinda bad. There's no thought of the consequences other than the current firefight. If you get knocked down to 1hp, you just go hide for a few seconds and BAM! back to full health. Health kits keep things tense and exciting, because you need to be careful.
