you can play as a prototyp vending machine who can move around like a normal human and use multiple plasmids and of course one thing i didn't like about infinite you can only carry two guns
That would at least have improved his cover while trying to sneak into Columbia. Seriously, the guy was terrible at trying to blend in at the start of the game - not that it mattered later on, of course.
Maybe Yatzhee has never heard of the "super prototype" trope As in a prototype is designed and made to test the limits of what they can produce. With the mass production model being toned down for exactly that: "mass production"
Great example of this: mobile suit gundam. The GM is a mass produced version of the gundam, with decreased maneuverability, (arguably) weaker ranged weaponry, and lighter armor than the prototype it's based off of. Also while the alpha series are capable of using more weapons and plasmids than Bouncers, Rosie's, Rumblers, and Lancers they were still notably less durable. (Omega is noted as having x2.5 the health of other alphas, giving him health similar to a non elite bouncer or rosie.)
Like the Tommy gun, pre WW2 it had a 50 round drum mag, three piece sights and a vertical grip. After a fair amount of war it was decided that our best boys deserve cheaper toys so buh-bye everything gun lovers loved about it.
Well, in reality a prototype is supposed to be as close to the finished product as possible. Specifically because a prototype IS pretty much just the mass produced model... as in it’s the model they use for mass production. Testing the limits is done well before the prototype phase! TL:DR a prototype is effectively just the mass produced model..
Another thing that might have to do with it is what you do in the game, big daddy's are meant to have exactly one purpose, but for you you have the capability if you feel like of leaving rapture, which you effectively do at the end of the game, so why would they want big daddy's with the ability to choose to leave the city if they really wanted to? What they wanted for a big daddy was nothing more then to be a protector for the little sisters while also being a tank that can dish out damage and thats exactly what they got with the later versions, big daddy's with no free will who fulfill their one purpose and would never have the thought of leaving the city or overthrowing the people in charge even cross their mind.
I recently replayed this, and I was surprised at how good looking it was. It had some environments that genuinely made me feel uneasy (Persephone in particular).
As far as overall story, Bioshock 1 was definitely stronger than 2, at least by virtue of being original (among other reasons) whereas 2 was basically just more of what we got with 1, for the most part. However, 2 had a much more satisfying ending, and I rather liked Eleanor quite a lot.
"Those haunting monstrous things that trudge around as if they can barely support their own weight? Those tragic figures reduced to single-function robots with no trace of humanity left, that seem to embody the downfall of the city as a whole?" In that one employee's defense, Yahtzee did just describe Darth Vader.
That's super valid, for instance I loved far cry 6 and Yahtz hated it's guts. This sorta thing is really quite about personal preference at the end of the day
@@Samagachi You want another use for mini turrets? Get winter blast, start recording an enemy, freeze enemy, throw down mini turret. That is the fastest way to research in this game, it's broken! I once got over 3000 research points on a brute splicer by doing that, you just have to keep them frozen, and let the turret shoot at them. It's crazy, it gives you like 50 research points per bullet!
So from what I understand, this game makes moral choices the way yahtzee said they'd be good: the "good" choice is more difficult but rewarding and the "evil" choice is more convenient. Huh.
His point was that, if you go for the good ending, a massive, massive chunk of this game is the exact same shitty 'defend against the horde for 5 minutes straight' back to back, where you're forced to waste all your ammo; all so you can acquire a resource that is superfluous at best, useless at worst, since the plasmid 'upgrade' system is all about pointless side-grades and fully leveling up trash skills you won't even use. As someone who beat this game on the hardest difficulty, beyond normal, this cycle becomes insanely drawn out, tedious, and as he said, it can (at several points) get you stuck in the game because it forced you to use all your ammo or dumped the big sister on you after multiple gauntlets. The game isn't well balanced. People say BioShock 2 has better gameplay than the first game, but BioShock's gameplay wasn't great to begin with and I doubt those same people played on higher difficulties or got the good ending. 2 also offers more of a power fantasy, so the kind of people who eat that shit up are the ones saying this too. Weird to see that you said this recently, when video games have moved away from binary moral choice systems entirely, because they're fucking awful.
@@sleepykhajiit1875 Bioshok 2 gameplay is better by a large margin, not only does it expand on the variety of plasmids but also implements many quality of life updates to the gameplay. Both games become a "smash your head against a brick wall until you break it" on higher difficulties but one at least is entertaining. Plus Bioshock 2 actually makes a competent moral system which makes being good actually harder and gives you multiple satisfying endings depending on your choices and doesn't pretend to make a meta commentary about choices in videogames that falls apart when you think about it for more than a second and it's immediately undermined by the next hours of game and the worst boss fight I have ever encountered. Bioshock 1 aims for the sky and crashes on to a tree while Bioshock 2 doesn't aim that high and can succeed in what it aimed to do.
@@sleepykhajiit1875 I have to disagree with you, I played Bioshock 2 on the hardest difficulty *with* disabled Vita Chambers. I didn't exactly enjoy the defend the little sister against hordes, it'd been nice if they weren't for EVERY single gather. However they weren't particularly difficult, and if you really wasted half of your ammo each time you clearly weren't doing it right. With the right plasmids and defense alt ammo you can defend the little sisters without much input from yourself. Sure, i'll admit, sometimes i got stuck and had to reload old saves a lot but it was mostly because i was charging head on it instead of properly setting up for defense. Also the plasmids are the same as the first game, some are great, some suck, and some are required to be upgraded past a certain point to be useful. I'd say the ones you get for defending the little sisters are worth it just like the first game as well. The gameplay is better than the first one, the dual wielding adds a ton of variety to combat, and being able to melee with any weapon instead of having to stupidly switch back and forth while you hope your stun lasted long enough is a nice change. I don't hate Bioshock 1's combat, but Bioshock 2's is objectively better. I did also do the above mentioned run while doing the good options, and saying that Bioshock 2 offers more a power fantasy is laughable. There are way more ways to break the game as Jack than Delta, the wrench can be stupidly op with Wrench Jockey and Vampire, and the chemical thrower makes all tough enemies including the final boss a joke. In the end, I think people are way too harsh on Bioshock 2 because they expected it to be just like the first. But it was impossible to do that because we would have all seen it coming.
I liked Bioshock 2 a lot. Not really sure /why/ I did. It's odd like that. I guess it's because I got both games on a Steam sale and played them right after eachother so maybe I was still satiated enough with 1's story to not dwell too much on 2's rather piss-poor one. Maybe I read a lot into Delta's character, or at least the ambiguity of his character. It never really is clear how much Delta is thinking vs. how much of what he does is his autonomic fixation on his Little Sister. Maybe the theme of paternal influence just struck a chord with me as a father of a young child. The one thing I didn't think about, going back to the review, is why Delta as part of the prototype line was much better than a stock Big Daddy. I thought it was that Alpha-series Big Daddies were inherently very good but flawed (expensive to make, went nanners if they lost their Sisters) so the simpler models like the Bouncer and Rosie were used. A prototype often has a lot of features that the final product ends up scrapping. PS, Bioshock: Vending Machine would be epic. What better prospective to experience the rise and fall of the libertarian utopia than a device built entirely for commerce?
I'll be honest, I'm a bit upset by this review. 1:56 It's explained. A Big Daddy and his Little Sister have some sort of life link between them. That's actually how you hack turrets too. Anyway, this link between them allows them to communicate they way they do. 2:09 This is also explained. At one point of the game, you find this... thing. From the recordings, you learn that it's Gilbert Alexander and it is clearly stated that after the operation on Eleanor, she would turn into what he looks like. "I fear the fate of Eleanor Lamb will be less physical, but no less grotesque." 2:55 You actually CAN just take them and rescue them straight away. Sure, nothing telling you where to go to do that, but you can still find them. Also, the game pretty much gives you many many ways to deal with it. You can easily setup and do nothing for the first half of the harvesting session if you're good. It's not all that costly either. Don't forget that dead enemies have a chance to trigger your traps, wasting them. 3:26 After you finish with all the Little Sisters, a Big Sister will ALWAYS spawn. Again, setup a bunch of traps and let her chase you down them or something you can probably kill her without shooting her directly. The game is easily broken with all the tools they give you. Lastly, from what I understood, the primary plot of Bioshock 2 is to discuss 2 things: 1) How Rapture was built 2) Eleanor's upcoming surgery thing and the back story around it.
***** I have no problem with your opinion (or Yahtzee's for that matter) but I would like to point out two flaws in both your argument and the video's. First, if you simply search for clues concerning the story like I have then nothing really happens without a reason for example Tenenbaum is back in the city because she heard that little girls were being taken close to the ocean. So fearing that her worst fears are surfacing again she takes it upon herself to go back down to rapture and fix the problem she helped start, and with Sinclair it is stated early on that all he really wants is to get to the surface safely so he can sell all the techno logic advances in rapture including the Big Daddy design. Though I can not deny that Adam is used for basically anything in the story I don't see why that is such a problem for people, the basic theme of Adam is that it re-writes the genetic code of people and the throwing fire and lighting is a bit of a stretch, I still praise the creators for making the abilities and concepts at least organic in nature. I mean if you can mess with the genetics and put them into liquid form, what would happen if you put specific traits into other people ( ergo Dr. Alaxander.) Second, the statement "we didn't NEED this story" is a broken one at best. We technically don't need any story with that line of thinking, this and also Bioshock 1 are stories being told because someone had some good ideas for a story they wanted to tell, they didn't NEED to happen they just did. I would like to say again that I have no problem with your guesses opinion, but I do love Bioshock 2 and I think that it deserves a lot more credit than people give it.
***** Hmm very interesting good Sr, well after reading your well thought out comment I am left with a new found understanding of your problems with the game but nevertheless still believe that Bioshock 2 is a much better game than people say. The phrase "different strokes for different blokes" is all that really comes to my mind it seems and since you took the time tell me how you felt about the game I fell it fitting to do the same. Now this may be because Bioshock 2 was the first game a played of the series, (I actually found both Bioshock 1 and 2 side by side at a local Game Stop and my first thought was this game has a picture of a deep sea diver with a drill for a hand and a yellow eyed girl on his shoulder ... #sold) but from the intro to the very end the game did nothing but impress me. The sense of weight as I move around rapture and fight wave after wave of splicers, the weird connection I feel with Eleanor even though until the end of the game my time with her was limited at best, and even the moral choices the game presents you with made the story even more interesting to me. I could go on for hours praising the game but really I just loved how the game made me feel playing as a Big Daddy. Don't get me wrong, I can fully acknowledge all of the plot holes the game has but I still believe that it did a good job making not care about the plot so much, I just wanted to save Eleanor and the sisters, (except for one of them which was due to non-important, mostly alcoholic circumstances.) I still have a problem with the points you made about the plot though; Big sisters are the only ones that can use the ADAM they extract, if Sophia wants to use the ADAM she has to take the needle from big sis and have it refined though the little sisters, also concerning Sinclair, as far as we understand he managed to get him self trapped in Ryan Amusements during the fall of Rapture and was only able to communicate with Tennenbaum via radio so subject Delta was one of his last options, but i digress. After that I wanted to know all I could about the series and I gotta say after playing the other two games in the series I still haven't beaten the games more than once like I have with number two. So in conclusion, I fully understand and respect your thoughts concerning this game but still believe that Bioshock 2 is not just an unneeded add-on to Bioshock 1 but an entirely different and engrossing experience compared to the first and more for the better not the worst.
Hugo Joubert (I have my top 25 in a document) 10. Pacman World 2 9. Far Cry 3 8. Minecraft 7. Portal 2 6. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney 5. Batman Arkham City 4. Bioshock Infinite3. Walking Dead Season 1 2. Halo 4 1. Team Fortress 2
the reason that this didn't follow up to one (in my opinion) is the one person who thought of fucking bioshock didn't have a single thing to do with bioshock 2. Ken Levine though it was to early for a sequel and didn't intend for the sequel to take place in rapture
Yeah, but then Ken Levine created Bioshock Infinite and basically stripped the original of all game play and created an arena shooter to appease CoD fans. Yeah, the story was great and I loved Elizabeth...but the game mechanics (and all of the freakin' scrounging for little silver coins in the most illogical places) basically ruined BI for me. Seriously...minimal environmental interaction, few enemy types, lousy weapon upgrades, constantly staring at the floor for coins...BI was a huge step back and Bioshock 2 was the better game.
So I'm playing the Bioshock collection now, my first ever playthroughs of the Bioshock games, and while I know what arguments people set against B2, I actually like it decidedly more than B1. And I mean much, much more. So no, Mr. Reviewer, B2 was not only a worthy successor to B1, with better, more enjoyable and fluid combat, better sound mixing and graphics and better insight into the setting of Rapture and darker and more emotional atmosphere, much less grinding and backtracking, a character I can really care about, and an exploration of the relationship between BDs and LSs that ended up defining the series and making it ICONIC. B2 is also a marked improvement on B1. Bioshock 2 rulez. Well, so far. And dude, if it feels too easy, just raise the fucking difficulty level. There IS an option for it. You won't be sitting around in a corner for long. I went for hard from the beginning and found the thing properly challenging. There, done.
Goode suggesting that veteran players should take advantage of difficulty settings if they want a challenge is not remotely the same as saying the game isn't properly balanced.
Disregarding the quality of the sequel, I'm half-way through the original Bioshock and I found the pipe-rearranging puzzles really fun. Is that one of those "Yahtzee is pissed and no one else" things or am I really one of the only people that liked them?
Zapsie well. it's quite easy to disregard the quality of the sequel since it doesn't really have any. i'm quite stunned that so many people actually think BS2 is in any way related to the Bioshock canon. it has no relation to the other Bioshocks. nothing. and if you want to prove me wrong i'd be happy to hear about it. i've played everything Bioshock cos i'm a big steampunk fan and whilst BS2 was fun i just despised the reliance on 'escort' missions. as soon as i realised most of the game would be me having to defend a little sister TWICE.. NOT ONCE BUT TWICE!!!! i popped it out the drive and have never played it since. padding out the lameness. i actually went back to playing Bioshock 1 because i loved the world, the tension and, more importantly, the story. the little cracks and splinters in the story i missed first time around. great stuff. BS2 was not known for its replayability. BS1? i feel like playing yet again because it truly captures that 'feel' of a utopia gone horribly wrong. i still say they MAY have had something with the MP side of the game iF they had created a minimum of 32players a side, with distinct differnces between Ryan's fighters and Atlas' [Fontaine's] spliced psychopaths on larger areas of Rapture. Atlas's cracked weirdos have psychoses on their side but that can work against you... Ryans men would be more organised. they could have made something of that. also, a co-op kinda game could have been implemented but, and this is what confirms to me just how cheap and cheerful BS2 was, they didn't do anything new, just polished up the combat. that's it. that was it. goodnight. pure shite.
I liked them. I like a good puzzle to solve. The sequel has "Watch the needle swing back and forth and click the mouse button when it's in the green zone" things instead. Not much of a minigame. I put it down to developers too lazy to even reuse their code from the previous game.
Bioshock 3, while not letting you play as a vending machine, you did have a vending machine following you around the whole time, a well developed and emotionally believable vending machine with reality manipulation powers, which was fucking awesome.
@@jeanleon1637 A disney princess who makes her own choices and actually contributes to the fights and doesn't end up with the "Prince", and arguably kills the main antagonist
On the rescuing little sisters side, you can actually carry her to the vent right away without needing to collect more ADAM and if you wanna avoid harvesting her, I thought you HAD to collect ADAM if you adopt her, but apparently, not really
Look. I have nothing against Yahtzee, but he seriously missed some things while playing through this (likely due to just wanting to get through the story). 1. Dual-Wielding: Remember in the original how clunky it was to change between guns and plasmids? Well, this game fixed that by letting Subject Delta do both at the same time. This would also be carried over into Infinite by the way, 2. The story: While I do agree with Yahtzee on this at some points, the story is still quite good. The morality system got a bit more fleshed out by three characters; a black woman named Grace Holloway, a "reporter" named Stanley Poole, and the large carcass once known as Gilbert Alexander. Though, one plot whole does sort of stop me; and it;s a spoiler but you'll know it when you see it. Also, how do you top the story from the original while keeping the setting the same? Also, there is a reason that the Big Sister attacks you no matter what; they see you like a thief, taking Adam away from the "Rapture Family". In the end, it's just a good adventure with some actually quite good audio-log characters (I'm looking at you Meltzer). 3: The Combat: Along with the dual-wielding, a few other things were added as well. First, your melee weapon is actually useful. 2nd, there are 3 new armored beasts; the Bunker, a Big Daddy with a rocket launcher and mini-turrets, the big sister (see video), and the Alpha Series I.e. what you are, and they carry upgraded versions of one of the guns you carry and one plasmid. And yes, the escort missions with the little sisters can be a pain at first, but 4 things make them really easy; Security Command, mini-turrets, trap-rivets and the Hypnotize plasmid. I think you guys should ignore Yahtzee for this game, and try it out. It's fun, expansive, a good follow-up, and has one of the best double-barrel shotgun designs ever.
Fluffy-Hat Okay, dual wielding was done much better in Infinite, and that's solely because of the animations. Somehow Agent Delta was just reloading things like a quad-barreled machine gun by.....lowering it off-camera for 5 seconds. Kinda stretched the imagination when reloading is literally a hands-free task just so my plasmid hand can remain free 100% of the time, and this little impossibility is quite literally in your face the whole game. This game does -not- make you feel like a Big Daddy. You still die to only a handful of bullets endgame, even on normal difficulty, unless you're like me and you never leave the house without Armored Shell 1 & 2, but the other Big Daddies take your heaviest arsenals and still manage to plug you more than a few times. You have all the speed, all the weapons, but I feel Yahtzee just completely ignored the fact that Agent Delta was flawed in that he could really only have -one- little sister, and the others only follow you because they end up being told to by said little sister. Then there's the whole gathering ADAM thing: I really don't think Yahtzee used the right combos of Hypnosis, hacking, turrets (from the hacking device), and traps. Seriously, trap rivets and trap bolts -existed- for this sole purpose, and trap rivets could be regathered so there wasn't even any wastage. A few times I had a little sister fully gather ADAM without any sploicers even getting within eye-shot. Strange, since he clearly liked the Hypnosis plasmid and that one singlehandedly lowers the number of enemies you fight by 50%. It didn't allow for backtracking for some reason, which always peeved me, the whole 'one missable weapon upgrade' in BioShock 1 pissed me off, now I have to make decisions on what weapons to upgrade and I cannot upgrade all the later-game weapons because the upgrade stations appear at certain points along the way, points I cannot go back to. That said, this was a helluvalot better than Infinite. For one, the story revolved around the exact opposite of Libertarian Andrew Ryan; Communist Sofia Lamb. In the same manner as Ryan, she makes you -hate- her, but she still has inklings of logic and the ability to identify with her in audiologs (contrast Comstock and his Helter Skelter white supremacy). You see -more- of Rapture, and it follows a very logical pathway where you see the obsolete train transportation versus public bathyspheres (kinda like cars vs. trains IRL). We got to see what happened after Jack leaves the city and leaves it to the inhabitants, and I don't know why Yahtzee complained about the state of disrepair when the Big Daddies are very clearly performing basic maintenance but you experience things like roofs caving in and flooding the area. On that note I feel the underwater segments were forced. They barely contributed anything since they disabled all weapons and had no combat, and there were only 5 ADAM slugs to pick up anyway so it was more of a 'hey, look at what the ocean looks like' thing.
***** It wasn't useless, just boring seeing as how you could use three different types of ammunition for every single weapon other than the wrench. It was viable, sure, but I muuuuch preferred BioShock 2's drill. Bash for extra damage compared to a gun-butt, drill for continuous damage, drill-dash for movement and damage, and when you fully upgrade the drill just equip that one tonic where the only weapon you can use is the drill but it costs significantly less fuel and go around playing a Bouncer.
I liked BioShock 2. I thought it was a good sequel to the first game. In fact I love all three of the games, and the people over at 2K have yet to make a BioShock game that I hate.
I will give merit were merit is due though, the combat in Bioshock 2 was fucking awesome. The bioshock series didn't need this sequel, it was unnecessary, but at least the story was expanded in a way that made sense, and the gameplay was improved in every way but the level design. The fact that the story had no surprises, no interesting turns and that it was somewhat predictable, was the main problem of this game. HOWEVER. The choices you made along the way DID matter and the endings were much better.
@@shaunrichards3869 I actually didn't know that. :) However, a long time has passed since I made this comment, and after playing some more, I eventually came to the conclusion that twist thing is something that failed with most players expectations, but I grew to like its somewhat lack of it all the more. Mostly because the first game was all about discovering something new, this sequel was about delving deeper into the subject. And I have to commend the people in charge with Bioshock 2 for giving us something unique. The concept of "an extreme action" being met with "an extreme reaction" was glorious. And pitting the Industrial mastermind that was Andrew Ryan, against the manipulating humanist that Sofia Lamb is, was a stroke of genius, not to mention she is a character that can stand as a true villain by her own right, even if placed into any other storyline, but instead shines as Ryan's foil.
It would have been difficult to have another twist without undoing or confusing what had been established in the first game. They did the right thing by expanding on the story with a straightforward plot.
After about 5 seconds thinking about a few things said in this review I came up with this: How about instead of it being a prototype it was originally a big daddy just like the rest. But one rebellious scientist took a big daddy from the production line and started tinkering with it for some years. After a few years improving the design he was discovered and quickly imprisoned/executed and his big daddy project taken into custody. But while being transported the it was activated by the Adam installed to power it (and allow it to use plasmids). After tearing up the transport the machine is left with one directive: Take down the government. From there the game could explore the world from a machine's view. Does it stop to think that its creator had some good tips on how to accomplish its directive? Does it just blast through nearest government-looking building with "Exterminate!" repeating in its mind? Or does it try to sabotage the city itself, risking the citizens as well as the government? Apart from the last paragraph I made all this up on the fly.
+Ploppman Here's my comment for yahtzee, read it. 0:56 Shows how little you played, just about every single flaw that was in Bioshock was corrected in this game. Want to use plasmids and guns without switching? It's changed. The over complicated Tonic menu? It's condensed so it's not four rows of who cares what now. Gun upgrades now add a REAL unique variety to each gun instead of just looking cool. (i.e. a 3rd shotgun upgrade has a chance to shock enemies, or a 3rd rivet gun upgrade can set enemies on fire, etc.) 1:24 It isn't you bloke, they directly mention this in the game. The Alpha big daddies (the ones you play as) get way too emotionally attached to their little sisters, so if they die, instead of looking for a new one like the finished models, they would either go into a trauma induced coma or simply go mad, hell, one of the audio dairies actually mention a Big Daddy crying. Of course they would sacrifice all of that efficiency if it meant they could have a steady supply rather than a ticking time-bomb that could go off as soon as they fuck up. 1:59 Little sisters have been able to do that, it;s why you could see ghosts in Bioshock 1. Adam is genetic material, and memories are in your genes, not in your brain. See, I paid attention to the games, unlike some people. 2:14 You seriously just punch out if a game's story isn't interesting to you? If your a critic you have to pay attention to a story element and if a game doesn't spoon feed you the info you just give up and say "Plot-hole" like IGN or some other jackasses do with Sonic games or some other franchise (couldn't think of another franchise that gets bashed over plot-holes that don't exist). All right, here;s the explanation, that's in the game, but must be spoon-fed. Memories and intelligence, they;re not shoving other's brains into her you twat, they want her to have all the Adam so she can be a perfect Utopian. 2:58 You can rescue them straight away. Go to a little sister hole right after you save them and you can dump them right there if you want, it's 100% optional to not only save them, kill them, or use them for more Adam AND THEN kill them or save them. 3:36 That would make no sense story-wise. As mentioned before, Lamb needs the little sisters and you either killing them or saving them means she has no more little sisters. So a big sister is sent out to kill you off for your Adam. 4:17 Who the fuck ever said "rapture falls"? The city doesn't blow up, it's still there, You just take a sub and the little sisters and leave behind Tenebaum (she does leave as stated in Bioshock 2) and happy happy ending. The city still exists and the memorable characters in that game are about 2-3. the game in itself is vast, but empty and shallow, YOu mostly listen to the two go at each other, Bioshock NEEDED more characters, that;s not to say the game was bad, just that there was room for improvement. And Bioshock 2 improved on every single aspect of the game, arguably even the story is more interesting. 4:28 Oh... Wow. So I am an idiot for liking this game? Yahtzee has truly improved given how the video is 4 years old. At least Yahtzee doesn't insult the people who enjoy the games... as much. Or as blatantly as just calling them "Thick" for enjoying a game. The only "Thick" twat is you for giving Bioshock infinite a free pass. Great game, but the flaws exist and you danced right over them. All, in all. This game was a vast improvement over the sequel. The Bioshock trilogy (I hope they make another one, or at least a game similar in style and gameplay) and the only ones who dislike it are buying for attention or just "thick" like IGN or Screwattack. At least Steam reviews let you see who the idiots are rather than just rely on reputation like so many people rely on RUclips critics and don't have their own. THOSE people are "thick" Ugh. Look at me rant over a 4 year old video. Just play a game and decide for yourself if it's good and take critics (like this one) words for a grain of salt. Taste is objective anyway.
+ManiacX1999 Good points. However I've got to give him the little sister thing. If you're trying squeeze as much Adam as possible, 2 boss fights with basically two sets of escort and defending is extremely unfair. And I don't see why the Big Sister couldn't try and kill me if I killed the little one
Rampant Cocks 4: Cocks vs Cunts was actually the best in the series. Sure, it deviated somewhat from the book, and the airport fight/musical number was jarring, but it had a lot character growth.
Bioshock 2 really had the best gameplay. I found it the most fun of the three games. The story was extremely personal, which kept you invested. Bioshock 1 made me want to leave the damned city (who wouldn't? It's a fuckin' Darfur down there). This story makes me WANT to stay in Rapture and save Eleanor.
I actually kind of liked seeing the world from a Little Sister's perspective. Wouldn't want to play an entire game like that, but it was interesting to find out why exactly they weren't traumatized for life from endlessly stabbing corpses or seeing Splicers running around shooting each other. I guess when they all stabbed Sinclair at the end of the first game they saw him as a giant fuzzy clown or something.
Some of the most fun I've had in a FPS is going for a melee build in Bioshock 2 and just yolo-charging everything that moves on-screen with the drill. With the right build it's a bunch of mindless fun that makes you pretty damn tough to kill.
I fail to understand why everybody is so upset about this game. IMHO, Bioshock 2 is an excellent title, one of my favourite games of all time. ... ... ... Alright, there we go, that should be enough time for the trolls and haters to disregard this comment and flame the crap out of me, thank you for those of you with any shred of respect for this game and the opinions of others, I appreciate your listening. I disagree with almost everything yahtzee says (and yes I am aware that it's his job to hate on games). 1. The story: While it may not be better than the original, Bioshock 2's story is certainly still great, and is very impactful. For one, the game feels much more personal than the original, and the theme of family plays a huge part in that personal aspect. The objective is simple, find your daughter and escape the city, but the ride gives you so much more. Like I mentioned earlier, family plays an extremely crucial role in the delivery, and your actions feel like they have real wait because they don't just influence your story, you are constantly being watched by your daughter who will turn out differently depending on wether or not you are a good or bad example for her. The characters are almost all great (personal favourites being Augustus sinclair, the Lamb family, and Alex the Great), each with interesting personalities and ideals. You really feel immersed in the world of Rapture and in this incredible story. 2. Mystery: This is the one aspect I will agree falls very short3 of the original, the first ten minutes of Bioshock are one of the most memorable events in gaming history, and the first time exploration of the world is a magical experience and that is one thing many people don't like about the sequel, that Rapture is still Rapture, the wonder from the original is gone. I don't mind, personally, because the first ten minutes of Bioshock are just that, ten minutes, and the effect is quickly diminished and if we're talking about the consistant wonder of simply exploring Rapture and uncovering it's secrets throughout the rest of the game, then I think Bioshock 2 has that as well, just without the shock and awe of the first game. The only thing that makes me truly upset is the lack of the "Circus of Value" and "Ammo Bandito" jingles. 3. Gameplay: Absolutely nothing wrong here. The gameplay is still at the same pace as the original (maybe even slighty faster), the interface is just a bit better (dual wieliding!) and combat flows a lot better. The pipe minigame is replaced with a real time QTE minigame which I don't mind, long distance hacking has been introduced, and the combat feels a lot more polished. The little sister defence sections are challenging and require a lot of strategy and forethought, which makes me feel awesome when I succeed, and the Big Sisters are some of the most terrifying, challenging, and overall badass enemies I have ever encountered, definately in my top ten.
I was under the impression the Big Sisters spawned more because you were removing the Little Sisters from the system so it doesn't matter if you've killed them or freed them.
This is possibly the only time where I actually have 100% agreed with Yahtzee’s over exaggerated criticisms. This game is the only time I’ve gone down to easy mode not because it was too hard, but because I wanted it to be over faster
After playing the game, I just don't understand the hate for Bioshock 2. Most people agree that the game is mechanically superior in many respects. I actually felt a need to switch between weapons in combat, while I basically just ran around with the same crap in the first game. But I think the story is also an improvement. Unlike the other two Bioshock games, it doesn't try to beat you over the head with some sort of philosophical idea. Perhaps it builds on the first game's message that utopian thinking is inherently problematic, but it seems more interested in exploring family relationships. The characters are much more subtle, and I felt much more of an emotional investment in their stories; the end actually had me choking back tears, while I just found the conclusion of Bioshock to be humorous. The odd thing is that the game is almost entirely the reverse of the first one - not only does it deal with different themes, but it also has a much more powerful final act, while the opening couple hours were dull. Bioshock started strong but unraveled in the last couple hours.
It does try to beat you over the head with a philosophical message, it's just that the message is stupid and the story diminishes the original games story because it retconned the ending. So, in the original game Rapture falls and the story arch ends. In this game, Rapture still exists, so nothing you did in the previous game mattered. That hangs over the whole game, and many people thought less of it because of that. It would be like making a sequel to Return Of The Jedi where the Death Star was never destroyed, Emperor Palpatine survived and Vader's redemptive arch was retconned. Sure, some people would love the movie, but a lot of people would hate it, even if it was the most competently put together movie in the world.
i liked defending the little sisters, bioshock was one of the games that had an awesome environment and you would constantly go "man i could set up an awesome ambush here" the defense parts were a great chance to actually use all your hacked turrets, robots, tornado combos, and tripwires.
I don't know. I kind of like the idea that just because Jack was done, doesn't mean Rapture was. Maybe it could have been done better, but the idea that there were still loose ends and side stories to tell is appealing.
Well it kinda was. It was basically dead the moment that everyone found a wonder drug to get high off of and then the supply of that drug was cut off by Tenebaum/Jack. Making a Sequel where Rapture is apparently totally fine despite the leaks kind of diminishes the effect of the first game. You are picking through a body in its death throes, trying to escape. BioShock 2 says that the body still had plenty of life left.
Here's how I see it: Bioshock 1 is story centered, with gameplay that is merely pretty good. Bioshock 2 is more game play oriented and "fun", but has a slightly lesser story. infinite is a pretty good balance between the two.
Am I the only one who enjoyed this game? Yeah sure the plot wasn't as good or as far fetched as the first one but the game-play and objectives were improved a lot which just made the game so much more enjoyable.
Absolutely not. Actually, there are are a lot of fans of the game (myself included). People just like to bitch. 1) Shooting mechanics are better. 2) Hacking is better. 3) Story is weaker (but, personally, I still really enjoyed it).
69johndz I also thought that the objectives were far less tedious than the first one. Everything we did had a point to it rather than in the first one when the objectives were like: Collect 10 of ......
Bioshock 2's gameplay is so excellent that it completely saves the game. I love playing as a big daddy and defend little sisters and get lots of adam and rescue them. It seems by how you played the game that you literally tried to make the game unenjoyable. And you don't seem very good at it either, since you can't even take down a big sister. And who the hell uses half their healthpacks on two gatherings? You literally get it all back on your journey to the next gathering and if you're good at it and strategic, you just end up using one or two at most. And that's also something awesome: Strategy. Preparing for the next thing you're gonna do or looking ahead and making sure to be prepared at all times has never been so engaging and fun.
Madalin Grama The fact that you say you had no problem doing the sections but then turn around to say you then had to search the map for resources after because you were dry and lost them all during the fight makes me really wonder. Bioshock 1's combat wasn't even hard wrench everything and anything because apparently wrench > semi auto shotgun that shoots lightning and explosions. Bioshock 1 wasn't fun because you had to manage resources it was fun because it was a first person shooter with style again were you could have a steampunk gear operated shotgun that shoots lightning and explosions and then fire bees out of your hand. The defense missions barely even took 15 seconds to do so 30 - 45 seconds for 2 bodies. That's only around 6 - 9 minutes for the entire game which is about 6 - 10 hours long awh lawdy gad forbid they try to mix up the walk forward and kill stuff with some OPTIONAL defensive missions that *gasps* rewards you with resources to make your character stronger oh my god it's almost as if it's the exact same as the first one. The reason the little sister defense was so annoying in the first one was because instead being a little 30 second thing for a big reward that is optional it was 15 - 20 minutes of walking through a trap infested area slogging at the pace of the little sister instead of you quickly carrying her with you and exploring the area with her as you transported them. AC II was the beginning of the end you played as a guido douchebag loudmouth in a game that had everything downgraded especially the combat and enemy morale system which turned from careful timed and well executed attacks and counters to mash b win game durrrr and you had less control over your character during free running as the controls in AC slowly got more and more automated and feel like you are just being magnetized towards ledges instead of making quick decisive escapes. The only thing AC II had going for it was slightly better missions but 1 still had the overall better idea of helping out civilians to gain information and to come up with how you wanted to tackle your target and you actually scouted out the area around where they were going to be instead of just running in blind killing them then announcing to the world that you are EZIO AUDITORE AND I LIVE AT 1632 WEST AVE I AM ONLY THERE MONDAYS - THURSDAYS BETWEEN 8 AM and 6 PM. Black flag had pretty amazing ship battles but other than that the other %60 of the game you spent on land was total garbage. Also looking at a video of the shit that was revelations tower defense and even comparing that to BS2 is blasphemy.
Con Cahill shut the fuck UP! BS2 is a cash em up from the success of BS1. admit it! you like the combat aspects of Bioshock. THAT IS IT. you don't want a fkn story! you want to shoot things! Bioshock was a work of genius with story and combat!! it was NOT CoD, which BS2 most definitely IS! i bought BullShit 2 when it was released... it's a sloppy wet shit pasted pair of pants of a game compared to the original. i loved the combat of Bioshock 1 but it had me wanting MORE because the story arc kept pitching higher and involving me more to find out this or that. Bullshit 2 is JUST COD. that is IT! nothing more! Combat...ooooh... more Bioshock combat.. hmm.. think i'll have a wank. even Ken Levine is embarassed that 2K did a "you didn't read the small print on the contract, did you, ken? we don't give a flying fuck you won't contribute to BS2 cos your idea of a follow up will take longer cos it - he he - according to you, will need a fkn 'story'...pfffft..... WE are gonna release a naff COD style POS escort mission game [COS WE ALL LOVE ESCORT MISSIONS..*not*] which forces you to follow/[COUGH]escort a little sister everywhere because you're not a giant mother conditioned spliced gorilla [the final Big Daddy] but a human with fatherly empathy conditioning [the Deltas]??" PS? it will have zero to do with anything else you write about Bioshock!! BS2 will be the next Call Of Duty!!! mwuhahahahahaha! have ANY of you actually READ the MANUAL???? i STILL have BS2 in immaculate condition [i wonder why that is? cos it's crap?] and the manual is 55% about the MultiPlayer aspects of the game. BullShit 2 is a terrible "followup-cashcow-wannabe" that, somehow [whu...? but how?] did NOT grab the MP market and steal away the COD morons. it's a disgraceful piece of cack.
Bioshock 2 has an amazing soundtrack, beautiful environments and most importantly Augustus Sinclair, which to me is one of the best characters in the series. I like Eleanor as well. Delta has more personality then Booker to me and that's why I like Bioshock 2 a lot more then infinite. Like, how many characters can you really remember aside from Elizabeth or Booker? Vending machine line is gold though.
@@Shoxic666 The hate is split on 2 and infinite from what I seen not both hated at by the same person. Maybe you read too many arguments and they are blending together.
It’s really interesting how everyone who said they loved bioshock 1 also said they loved 2 precisely because of everything Yahtzee didn’t like, I took this review as gospel when it came out all those years ago and felt bad for liking it but now I just enjoy these as comedic with a grain of salt. I wonder what else I missed out on over the years
The thing about the Big Sisters is pretty spot on. I never played through the 'evil' route, so I figured they were just psychos who wanted to kill me regardless. Had no idea they were supposed to be protecting the little sisters.
After just playing trough Bioshock 1 and 2, I honestly don´t get the hate for 2. Was it better? No IMO Biohsock 1 is the superior game, but is 2 a bad game? Defenitely not, its a great game with improved mechanics from 1 granted with a lesser great story and characters.
+Artorias will rip you apart. oh boo fuckin hoo it was dissapointment , go cry to the panic room with your bioshock 1 dont be exagerate , the game is good? , is fuckin good, period
T was alright multiplayer was good the what was it 12 different endings was cool I liked the dual wielding drill combat was fun the combos were awsome the message just felt like a slightly dumbed down one of the orginal though
The prototype Big Daddy could have been discontinued because the newer ones were easier to make and (seemingly) had less free will. What good is a Big Daddy that can use plasmids if it chose to not protect the Little Sister?
+Davis Jensen The Alpha big daddies (the ones you play as) get way too emotionally attached to their little sisters, so if they die, instead of looking for a new one like the finished models, they would either go into a trauma induced coma or simply go mad, hell, one of the audio dairies actually mention a Big Daddy crying. Of course they would sacrifice all of that efficiency if it meant they could have a steady supply rather than a ticking time-bomb that could go off as soon as they fuck up. They explain this in the game. THAT'S why tenebaum discontinued the Alpha series.
The reason a prototype would be better is because it's more expensive and there for not reliable to mass produce, so for mass production they cut down the quality, but with Big Daddies I'm not sure the same sort of thing would apply.
I personnaly think the other big daddies are bulkier because they are also more powerful. I mean, you could be killed by splicers, can you imagine the other thing happening to them ?
***** Ok, not to be aggressive or try and start something here, but if your answer is "he is better because he is the main character." I would like to point out that this is a solution to the plot hole at hand, but not one that resides within an unbroken forth wall. So in conclusion it holds no more weight INSIDE the story than some one saying "he is better because I wrote the game so I get to decide who kicks ass and takes names, and who gets to be just one enemy out of the 40 you killed in this stage alone, even if there is no reason for them to be any different." Keeping in mind my point here was that the reason must exist IN GAME to count as part of a story. For example if this big Daddy was faster, more versatile and a larger threat, because it was constructed to serve as a fail safe against a rogue big Daddy malfunction or because this was a big daddy designed to guard against an attacker more powerful than normal and you don't see them normally so as not to tip ones hand to any potential threat hiding in plane sight, that would be a solution however crowbarred in as it may be, but it exists for a reason greater than "because he is the main character".
***** According to audio tapes, Vita-chambers were signed with Ryan's DNA, and only he would be resurrected, other citizens of Rapture would use them as refreshing devices unaware of other purpose. Jack was able to use them because he's Ryan's son. Subject Delta was resurrected 10 years after his death, because it took that long for Eleanor to moddify them (using Little Sisters), so they recognize Delta's DNA as valid.
***** He's faster and can use plasmids? He's stronger than jack but has less armour than a big daddy plus he can use plasmids. Seems like a much better reason than jack is just a dude who comes to rapture and wins because he gets told to?
Yahtzee, You realize that prototypes are generally better than the finished model because they are not massed produced and production doesn't cut corners to make a profit on it as it is the one to sell (what end up being knockoffs) the idea and mass produced product.
And this statement is flawed on so many levels. What is a prototype? A prototype is an unfinished version of a product, made with the intent of testing one or more specific aspects or concepts, that the finished version is planned to have. This means that a prototype can be ANYTHING between nothing and the finished product. For instance, the prototype of a car, could easily just be 4 wheels mounted to a frame, with nothing else to it. Would that be better than your finished car? Probably not. And seeing as prototypes are also made for the purposes of test features and concepts, there's also the very likely chance that they don't work properly. This can result from a new addition not working on it's own, not working with other aspects, or an older aspect not working because of changes made to allow the addition of the new one. All in all, in about 99% cases, prototypes are worse than the finished product, because they exist somewhere in the largely undefined state between "project started" to "project complete". A single product can have several hundred different prototypes. You're thinking of the very last prototype before the product is deemed sell worthy, which means you're completely ignoring the possible hundreds (and maybe even possible thousands) of earlier test samples that are usually made, in some form or another.
justhanditover Then maybe you should pick your wording more carefully when making a generalized statement. Prototypes are not always a better version of the product that ends up on the shelves. Sometimes it is, but sometimes it is a half-finished design that needs time and more money to be properly finished. Also, and this is directed more towards the game and not anyone's particularly opinion: the notion that Delta is the prototype big Daddy doesn't entirely add up, because the guy wasn't even among the first line of Big Daddies to begin with. One of the diaries you find in the game indicates that the Alpha series was not the first line of Big Daddies, but one that was developed later because their Big Daddies weren't paying close enough attention to their little sisters. This is why the Alpha series BDs have the physiological bond to them, which was supposed to encourage them to stay close and keep them from falling into danger in the first place.
WebMaster1337 Oh for fucks sake, apparently its okay whenever you find a prototype weapon in any other game and its uber-OP, but when you ARE the prototype weapon in this game and you are better than your successors everyone whines and bitches. Get over it.
Venomine95 How exactly did I whine and bitch? I merely described what a prototype is, and made absolutely no judgment regarding this game. A prototype is a test of functionality and/or concept, so in nearly all cases, it will be either slightly or vastly inferior to the finished product, as it lacks some or nearly all functionality. This is a fact, not a complaint. And my comment certainly wasn't aimed specifically at this game either, but rather at the false notion of prototypes often being superior.
Adopting the Lil' Sisters in Bioshock 2 actually awakens my maternal instinct causing me to scream "Back the f*ck away from my daughter you mutant bollock headed twats!!" loudly enough to awaken the neighboring county.
The story in Bioshock one has a twist at the end, so does infinite, bioshock 2 didnt use this trick to make itself better. It actually is the one bioshock that is different. It added a much different gameplay: hacking, little sisters, plasmids, guns, big sisters, more freedom to choose, filming, you got to see rapture from outside the glass, a different story entirely. I feel like people just skip over these facts because there wasnt a surprise twist at the end. And there wasnt, but you got a story of family, of love towards one other person, but since you people are just in to shoot em ups and TWISTS, you dislike this game. Open your eyes, leave your comfort zone, and embrace this masterpiece.
We could also say that Delta is the prototype Big Daddy of a later variation of the Big Daddies in Bioshock 1 but was never mass produced as Rapture soon began to crumble.
if I'm being honest I think you were a little too harsh. Don't get me wrong the game isn't perfect no game is, that big sister idea actually makes sense, but honestly playing as big daddy is awesome idea, it is the most popular thing from the franchise and just because they screwed it up the sensation of playing as a big daddy in the first game doesn't mean it isn't admirable to try and perfect it in the sequel. Plus using that drill every time make me feel like badass. Plus you can't really blame for at least trying to make morality a more important feature in the game. As for the story I admit it's not as good at the first but that like trying to compare gold to silver, if you find a gold brick and silver brick by some ultimate chance of luck do you throw the silver brick in trash can? No! While lamb is annoying, she did what a villains are meant to do. You want to murder her. And you can't tell me that big sisters aren't a cool idea in general. And the guide that Delta got is way better friend to him then Atlas was to jack in the last game for obvious reasons.
@@MAAAAAAAAAA123 It is a better version actually. Better gameplay, graphics, arguably even characters and story. The era of saying Bioshock 2 is bad has passed since most people realized that the game is actually good.
Actually the game explains that it a prototype big daddy made only to protect the little sisters cuz if you remember big daddies were originally made for repairing the city
Colebotman Conley I dunno... Was just really fun using the drill to tear enemies apart. Was really satisfying. Don't see why so many people hated it, its story did fall in line with the style of the other Bioshock games with its ending actually being similar to bioshock infinite... SPOILER ALERT! Daughter killin ya.
Ownya twice No. They are nothing alike. In Bioshock 2 she doesn't kill you. You die from the bends. She then either absorbs your mind and becomes super evil, realizes she can't be evil, or just sits with you in your final moments. Bioshock Infinite made you think, which you obviously did not do.

I actually REALLY disagree with Yahtzee on Bioshock 2. The gameplay is infinitely better than 1's. You can use guns and plasmids at the same time which makes 1 look absolutely stupid in comparison, the QTE hacking really helps save time (even though I didn't mind the pipe puzzles), not to mention THE DRILL DASH is one of the best attacks in videogames period. The sound design on that thing is fucking crazy. The major area I think 1 is better is the antagonists. Ryan, Cohen, Fontaine, Suchong, the crazy doctor, etc. I do like Sofia Lamb and Alexander the Great provided a great moral conundrum, but 1's cast is overall more iconic. But even with that said I like Sofia a lot, and I LOVE your daughter Eleanor and Sinclair as characters. They alone actually draw me back to 2 more than 1. 1 may be more impactful on gaming overall, but 2 gets such a stronger emotional reaction out of me. It's like the perfect fusion of 1 and Infinite. Rapture and Big Daddies, but smoother gameplay and eventual daughter bonding at the end of the story.
I don’t know if somebody else has already said that, but with prototypes they’re often pushing the tech to its limits and so are either very fiddly, difficult to mass produce or just way too expensive. If someone makes a suit that’s completely bulletproof but cost $12 billion each then obviously it’s going to be dumbed down until it’s affordable even if it’s far less effective. I’m going to assume it’s something like that the story uses to justify Delta being so much better.
Bioshock 2 had gameplay and a story I could really get into and fixed a lot of little flaws bioshock 1 had. For some reason, when I played bioshock 1 it didn't seem as fun as 2 but the story for 1 was just as great as 2 in my opinion. 👌👌👌
I really want Ken Levine to finally come out after a decade of silence and announce a third Bioshock game where you play as the Circus of Values, just watching splicers come and go and occasionally buy some bullets and cake from you.
I honestly liked 2's story was better and hit alot more with emotions and every "governor" had something that linked them to delta and the gameplay felt more satisfying.
Andrew Retorez exactly, bioshock 2 is so underrated, it doesn’t deserve to be a sequel to bioshock 1, i would’ve preferred it being called, Bioshock 2: legacy , it’s more fitting
watching this review made me realize how bad yahtzee is at analyzing plots. "THIS doesn't make sense, and THIS doesn't make sense, and THIS doesn't make sense!" is sensibility really the metric that we're to use to judge a surrealist narrative? he rarely commented on what anything represents in the story, all he did was talk about how it's stupid because "it doesn't line up with what I think would make sense" which holds no water in the slightest
To be fair I think I the prototype idea wasn't too stupid. The prototypes where made to be more intelligent and faster but less armoured whilst the later ones where designed to be big powerful programmed creatures. The game explains that they made the change because the prototype ones retained enough of their humanity to really bond with their little sister rather than protecting them simply being a programmed command. When it's little sister died it went mad and wouldn't bond with another so they scrapped that idea and decided to go for the dumb hulk approach. From what I can remember of bioshock 2 the normal big daddies where far harder to take down than the long mad berserker alpha prototype remnants. If you saw a prototype you didn't have to worry about preparation you just went in balls deep. With a normal big daddy you plan shit out unless your on a very low difficulty.
Actually, the Big Daddies are only slow when following Little Sisters. When they charge at you they're extremely fast, and in the first game when you hypnotize them, they more than match your speed. My headcanon for the reason why the current models can't use Plasmids or multiple weapons is that doing so gave the Big Daddies too much free will, which is why they were forced to scrap that idea in the later models. This also explains why you can pretty much behave however you want in Bioshock 2.
about the reason that Delta is a prototype is actually explained in the story. the thing was that big daddies were already around before Delta and other prototypes. most big daddies would just wander around and help any little sister that needed saving. Deltas project was an attempt to link a big daddy to a specific little sister (thus why Elena can communicate with you).
I actually like the second one, but I agree that playing as a big daddy was a fucking awful idea. The fact you played as a somewhat normal man made you seem vulnerable and added to the panic of a fight. But I felt the story was more or less solid.
Here's something a lot of people forget that bioshock 2 has actual replay value because of multiple endings. When you have played bioshock the first time there is pretty much no reason to play it again except for nostalgia 10 years later.
The gameplay wasn't bad, but I absolutely hated the story. Sofia Lamb or whatever the fuck her name was couldn't compare to Andrew Ryan as a villain. Plus, I was under the impression Rapture was screwed after Ryan was killed.
Does Yahtzee realize you CAN actually save the little sister without going through all the defending stuff? Just kill the big daddy, run up to a vent and press E.
Huh, interesting. I had no idea people didn't like the Little Sister "missions" in Bioshock 2. Those were my favorite parts of the game for a few reasons. 1) I had a cock-nose older brother that was a cock-nose. So when time came for me to have a little sister in a video game I immediately attached to her 110% and would do everything I could to keep her safe and let her do what she wanted to do. Because of the bond I made for myself, those times in the game were a million times more fun than everything else because they meant a lot more to me. When you successfully get her all the Adam she wanted and walk her back to the hole in the wall, I always felt a sense of Dad/older Bro-men-ship. Like I accomplished something great and it felt great. 2) I thought I was going to have more points as to why, but that's pretty much it. I like BS2 more than BS1 mainly because of the Little Sister events and the fact that you felt way stronger in 2. You had a big-ass drill arm and could duel wield things which made the overall game play feel way better overall since I wasn't constantly flipping through all of my things which was really annoying when I played them for the first time on X Box, when I re-played the games on PC a few years back both games were a lot more easy to navigate though, so that problem wasn't really there. Still liked BS2 more though if for fun value over anything else. Maybe I'm just a 2 IQ dumbass though but when BS2 was being hyped up before release and they said you could play as a Big Daddy I was over the moon. You seemed pretty pissed about it, though.
I believe I have a fairly controversial opinion in saying that I actually think that Bioshock 2 is better than the first one, in pretty much every aspect. I finished it yesterday and it was an absolute blast. The gameplay was better (even the defense bits, which were improved upon greatly from the last game), the fleshed-out enviroment and audio logs were still there and perhaps even more memorable, and - here's the one no one agrees with me on - I thought the story was better. The characters, too. Sofia Lamb was a wonderful villian, I loved Sinclair, and it was awesome to learn all my moral decisions affected Eleanor in the ending. I got the best ending, by the way, which was just so touching and wonderful I wanted to cry. Perhaps its one sin is it's a little too similar to the first, but other than that it's an amazing game.
Review doesn't even touch on the beautifully constructed nuance and detail in the the plot. Its main failing was calling it Bioshock 2; implying it is a direct sequel rather than another story told within the Bioshock world. Way too harsh a review.
BioShock 2 was fairly decent, challenging and fun to play. However there was hardly anything memorable in the game, apart from the Alex the Great part. I understand why people think this game is merely a cash cow by 2K, seeing as though the creators of BioShock, Irrational Games, had nothing to do with the sequel's creation. The story was, but not entirely bad. I didn't take kindly towards popping new characters into the lore's existence (don't get me started on Sofia Lamb). Although I feel that it was a good thing Burial at Sea rendered it non-canon, it would be a shame to shun BS2 entirely since Infinite learned a bit from it, like dual wielding, charge attack, the premise that a religious fanatic wants his/her daughter to lead an intended purpose, etc. BS2 is a Hit/Miss. Same coin, different perspective.
Yahtzee almost got it. You don't play as a vending machine in Bioshock 3, but your AI companion is one.
Damn
Stolen comment
hows this, vending machine with tits
Alternatively, it's the perfect description for Burial at Sea Episode 2.
With all the personality of one too
Can someone mod Bioshock Infinite so that every time Booker speaks, you just hear "WELCOME TO THE CIRCUS OF VALUES!"
you can play as a prototyp vending machine who can move around like a normal human and use multiple plasmids and of course one thing i didn't like about infinite you can only carry two guns
Yes. Please. I was so upset to find out that guy wasn't in Bioshock 2. At least he found a new job in Infinite.
*"WE̕L͠C͟OME ҉T̛O͝ ̡T̡HE͞ ̢C̸ÍRC̀U̧S̵ O͘F̢ VA̵LUE͜S!"*
That would at least have improved his cover while trying to sneak into Columbia. Seriously, the guy was terrible at trying to blend in at the start of the game - not that it mattered later on, of course.

The only appropriate time to wear gloves while in a city in the sky and he didn't do it.
Maybe Yatzhee has never heard of the "super prototype" trope
As in a prototype is designed and made to test the limits of what they can produce.
@@camelthegamer7165 It was wartime. Maybe the additional metal and labour time could be used better in say, building more strategic bombers.
In bioshock three you escort a vending machine
A vending machine so good, it's one of the best characters in the entire franchise.

Funny how Yahtzee was half right about Infinite, Elizabeth is a vending machine of ammo! Yup

"You're just the bloke from the first game with a fishbowl on his head!"
Didn't that actually happen in the first game?
I recently replayed this, and I was surprised at how good looking it was. It had some environments that genuinely made me feel uneasy (Persephone in particular).

9 years after this comment and I agree. Bioshock 2 aged very well
@@notloopers1110 better than infinite tbh
Plot may be a bit of a mess, but I did really love that they made "being good" harder than "being a selfish murderer"
As far as overall story, Bioshock 1 was definitely stronger than 2, at least by virtue of being original (among other reasons) whereas 2 was basically just more of what we got with 1, for the most part.
However, 2 had a much more satisfying ending, and I rather liked Eleanor quite a lot.
gameplay was better too...
vyor2 lies!
AFGNCAAP Anderson the game play of bioshock 2 was better.
I repeat: "lies!"
AFGNCAAP Anderson Explain!
"Those haunting monstrous things that trudge around as if they can barely support their own weight? Those tragic figures reduced to single-function robots with no trace of humanity left, that seem to embody the downfall of the city as a whole?"
In that one employee's defense, Yahtzee did just describe Darth Vader.
Fair
Oh. Not Trump then.
You actually don't have to help the sisters gather adam, you can just take them to the vent.
I actually really liked BioShock 2
Well it's worse in every way and the horror aspect is out of the window entirely.
That's super valid, for instance I loved far cry 6 and Yahtz hated it's guts. This sorta thing is really quite about personal preference at the end of the day
Say what you will but I loved ramming my drill through Splicer 's sturnums ^_^
Captain Rave Slendy Truth.
+Captain Rave Slendy I love drilling splicers
That's what got me into the game ^ ^
+Gromulous Straine That was the reason I bought it tbh. XD
Amen!
I like Bioshock 2. The only thing I don't like about it are the mini turrets, they don't last long enough.
They didn't last long and they hardly had any use other than from gathering spots
"I fear the fate of Eleanor Lamb will be less physical, but no less grotesque."
2:55 You actually CAN just take them and rescue them straight away.
Lastly, from what I understood, the primary plot of Bioshock 2 is to discuss 2 things:
1) How Rapture was built
2) Eleanor's upcoming surgery thing and the back story around it.
Alaxander.)
Second, the statement "we didn't NEED this story" is a broken one at best.
I think this might be the politest comment thread on here. It's...it's beautiful.

the reason that this didn't follow up to one (in my opinion) is the one person who thought of fucking bioshock didn't have a single thing to do with bioshock 2.
Right? Most of the Rapture ambience was there, and Sophia Lamb was a pretty good antagonist.
It's okay, I liked them too.
Ryans men would be more organised. they could have made something of that.
also, a co-op kinda game could have been implemented but, and this is what confirms to me just how cheap and cheerful BS2 was, they didn't do anything new, just polished up the combat. that's it.
that was it. goodnight. pure shite.
Heyo, I know I'm 5 years late, but I also really enjoy them, though the simplified bioshock 2 hacks are a better system imo.
I liked them. I like a good puzzle to solve. The sequel has "Watch the needle swing back and forth and click the mouse button when it's in the green zone" things instead. Not much of a minigame. I put it down to developers too lazy to even reuse their code from the previous game.
1:23 cost effectiveness?
I found u
Bioshock 3, while not letting you play as a vending machine, you did have a vending machine following you around the whole time, a well developed and emotionally believable vending machine with reality manipulation powers, which was fucking awesome.
+Breeze Ark I would call her a "disney princess", rather than well developed.
@@jeanleon1637 A disney princess who makes her own choices and actually contributes to the fights and doesn't end up with the "Prince", and arguably kills the main antagonist
The best part of Bioshock 2 is how The Great Alexander says "Del-taaa!"
This would also be carried over into Infinite by the way,
***** Yes but now you can shoot lightning and bees from your hands whilst drilling them in the face.
***** Or you could just walk around him in circles with the wrench on the hardest difficulty.
***** or stand in the middle of enemy fire and boat him in the face with fully upgraded shotgun rounds, killing him in under a minute.
Agreed!!
They intentionally chose not to have any twists in the story, it’s been done already with the first game.
@@shaunrichards3869 I actually didn't know that. :)
However, a long time has passed since I made this comment, and after playing some more, I eventually came to the conclusion that twist thing is something that failed with most players expectations, but I grew to like its somewhat lack of it all the more.
After about 5 seconds thinking about a few things said in this review I came up with this:
How about instead of it being a prototype it was originally a big daddy just like the rest.
+Ploppman Isn't that's exactly what Tenenbaum do to Subject Delta?
Gonna be honest; I have no idea what you're talking about. All I know about bioshock 2 is what's said in this review.
(i.e. a 3rd shotgun upgrade has a chance to shock enemies, or a 3rd rivet gun upgrade can set enemies on fire, etc.)
1:24 It isn't you bloke, they directly mention this in the game.
THOSE people are "thick"
Ugh.
I know it's for story convince but it's just very irritating
You bring up some good points but I enjoyed 2 a lot more than the original
"Grrr, your selfless compassion fills me with *_𝓶𝓾𝓻𝓭𝓮𝓻 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝓷𝔃𝔂"_*
I really do wonder why the Big Sisters are so ticked off about me rescuing them.
The Big Sisters work for Sofia Lamb and she needs the ADAM the Little Ones create for her little project with Eleanor.
I fail to understand why everybody is so upset about this game. IMHO, Bioshock 2 is an excellent title, one of my favourite games of all time.

Loic Cremer Thank you. It isn’t “Bioshock” (no game ever will be, certainly not Infinite), but it’s still a very good game.
Ironic how his sarcastic joke of this being about 'the very nature of sequels' kind of perfectly explains Infinite
"Grrr... your selfless compassion fills me with murder frenzy!"
literally my favourite yahtzee line ever.
XoxeroThePoet they literally did that in the EU star wars(Legends?) and the current star wars series has the Empire retaking the galaxy so yes.
XoxeroThePoet Rapture falls....Those inside take charge no?
There was still plenty of sane and insane people in Rapture at the end of bioshock 1
The Black Hearted Nord hat isnt his point, the death star was still destroyed and palpatine is still dead so hes point stands
Yartzhee you know that you can carry the little sister straight to the vent right?
i liked defending the little sisters, bioshock was one of the games that had an awesome environment and you would constantly go "man i could set up an awesome ambush here"
the defense parts were a great chance to actually use all your hacked turrets, robots, tornado combos, and tripwires.
You don’t have to have the little sisters harvest bodies before sending them to the vents
Here's how I see it:
Bioshock 1 is story centered, with gameplay that is merely pretty good.
Bioshock 2 is more game play oriented and "fun", but has a slightly lesser story.
infinite is a pretty good balance between the two.
I always thought the opposite was true.
There's this difficulty called hard, in it Splicers can take half your health with just a single pistol bullet. So med kits will be wasted, A LOT.
Madalin Grama Yes it's almost like there's an entire genre based around it.
Con Cahill shut

UP!
WE are gonna release a naff COD style POS escort mission game [COS WE ALL LOVE ESCORT MISSIONS..*not*] which forces you to follow/[COUGH]escort a little sister everywhere because you're not a giant mother conditioned spliced gorilla [the final Big Daddy] but a human with fatherly empathy conditioning [the Deltas]??"
PS? it will have zero to do with anything else you write about Bioshock!!
Narred Darr Wow, and I thought I was taking this too seriously... Wow.
I just came from watching his Bioshock review, and Yahtzee sounds much MUCH angrier with Bioshock 2 compared to Bioshock
It's just entertainment, Luka-boy. Yahtzee is always just being salty for entertainment.
Hora hora.
Most of them.
@@davidgribble6313 Oh, ok *insert Homer Simpson backs Into bushes meme* :)
And then BioShock Infinite placed 1 on his Best Games of 2013 list
@@Shoxic666 I'm a Bioshock fan and I don't hate it.
@@Shoxic666 The hate is split on 2 and infinite from what I seen not both hated at by the same person. Maybe you read too many arguments and they are blending together.
My opinion on Bioshock 2 is that it is a very god game, but not as good as the first Bioshock.
BlitzBurn god game?
Themaster Ofwaffles I meant good
It’s really interesting how everyone who said they loved bioshock 1 also said they loved 2 precisely because of everything Yahtzee didn’t like, I took this review as gospel when it came out all those years ago and felt bad for liking it but now I just enjoy these as comedic with a grain of salt.
+Gamefan56 It's a dissapointment. That's why
+Artorias will rip you apart. oh boo fuckin hoo it was dissapointment , go cry to the panic room with your bioshock 1
dont be exagerate , the game is good? , is fuckin good, period
+tony bc It's a disappointment because they could have done a lot of cool things with the Big Daddy concept and instead you end up just like Jack.
Oh wha wha so horrible
tony bc Just saying.
Well I liked bioshock 2
That's literally my approach to almost all of Yahtzee's videos. Then I go to read people fighting in the comments.
T was alright multiplayer was good the what was it 12 different endings was cool I liked the dual wielding drill combat was fun the combos were awsome the message just felt like a slightly dumbed down one of the orginal though
Funny how this has the exact same plot as infinite his favorite game of 2013 .
***** They're not stupid they are addicts and everyone knows hopped up addicts addicted to magic juice > normal people.
WebMaster1337
And this is where context comes into play.
justhanditover Then maybe you should pick your wording more carefully when making a generalized statement.
And my comment certainly wasn't aimed specifically at this game either, but rather at the false notion of prototypes often being superior.
yahtzee knows you didn't HAVE to let the little sisters gather adam right?
0:24 That's the Quadratic Formula. Thanks Yahtzee, now I feel like a nerd.
Yep it is, it is the bioshock thT I had the most fun playing
The Mangled I agree
Just more Bioshock 1? Sounds good to me
That's... not what he said.
THATS WHAT SHE SAID
It's not... what? What the hell?
Are you daft?
@@MAAAAAAAAAA123 It is a better version actually. Better gameplay, graphics, arguably even characters and story. The era of saying Bioshock 2 is bad has passed since most people realized that the game is actually good.
The formula at 0:24 is actually for working out the value of x if the equation you have = 0 (e.g 3x^2+5x-6=0)
Actually the game explains that it a prototype big daddy made only to protect the little sisters cuz if you remember big daddies were originally made for repairing the city
Liked the story significantly more in Bioshock 2, Bioshock 1 never interested me that much apart from the big twist.
Me too, it seemed more emotional as a big daddy.
Colebotman Conley
I dunno... Was just really fun using the drill to tear enemies apart. Was really satisfying. Don't see why so many people hated it, its story did fall in line with the style of the other Bioshock games with its ending actually being similar to bioshock infinite... SPOILER ALERT!
Daughter killin ya.
Stop posting, would you kindly?
Ownya twice No. They are nothing alike. In Bioshock 2 she doesn't kill you. You die from the bends. She then either absorbs your mind and becomes super evil, realizes she can't be evil, or just sits with you in your final moments. Bioshock Infinite made you think, which you obviously did not do.

never let it be said that Yahtzee can't be real bloody petty.
1:46 man every time Lamb would start transmiting to the character I couldnt help but roll my eyes
So the equation for a sequel is also the equation of standard deviation.
That was the quadratic equation.
Vynik21 Well I just failed maths
I preferred Bioshock 2 over the original
***** you know what? i BELIEVE YOU. i truly do.
***** As did I.
***** I preferred its game play but not its story. Nothing is better than a swarm of security bots named Jeff.
Bioshock 2 had gameplay and a story I could really get into and fixed a lot of little flaws bioshock 1 had. For some reason, when I played bioshock 1 it didn't seem as fun as 2 but the story for 1 was just as great as 2 in my opinion. 👌👌👌
Bio shock infinite play as vending machine dlc must be made
I just now figured out that formula shown twenty-five seconds in. It's the Quadratic Formula! Awesome! Kinda.
That moment when Bioshock 2 is actually the best out of all three.
watching this review made me realize how bad yahtzee is at analyzing plots.
This is the same buffoon who tried to review Horizon Forbidden West despite not having a clue what was going on.
"Stop crying you bitch, I am trying to eat this cake" Lol best line ever.
3:37 I COMPLETELY AGREE HANDS DOWN.
am i the only one who liked bioshock 2?
Am I the only one who FUCKING LOVED the multiplayer in this game?
Do people still play it on Xbox?
Idk, my 360 died a while back, lost Bioshock 2 a while before that.
Soviet Potato It takes a while to find a game, and when you do, you get incomplete teams, but its still okay if you have patience
She was one of the first little sisters, and was the first to be telepathically bonded with a big daddy (delta) allowing them to communicate.
"Get outta here you Little Sister, The sound of your sorrow is making my cake smear taste like unhappy!
I think he should re-review this; All the games he's reviewed might've given him a new perspective.
