    It's wild going back and watching a review of this game where Ubisoft was just pioneering their modern formula and it actually felt fresh and fun. Imagine if they'd been putting that level of talent and creativity into continuing to play with and evolve the franchise instead of making the same game in a different location for the past 8 years.

    • @psugab

      I actually bought FC3, and started watching ZP, because of this review. I then bought FC2, not realizing it was less fun and actually was the template Ubisoft was forcing. It just lacked the insane adrenaline in parts, so Ubi thought "that's what we need" and started forcing the set piece and press left to not die everywhere, ruining the actual nuance and balance. Edit: Fixed FC3 twice.

      @aravindpallippara1577 Год назад +2

      @@psugab From a systems standpoint I really like Farcry 2 since it has that parable quality of war (civil war in this case) is always hell and there is no good morality left to judge.
      The game is far harder than facry 3 or any subsequent ones due to having respawning enemy checkpoints and imperfect weapons (not just weapon breakage - the silent sniper has very limited ammo and is very very slow as well as hard to use, the rpg puts the area behind you in flames due to backblast, very few wepons have suppressors and all of them have one problem or other).
      You go from infrastructure destruction to infrastructure destruction, and your companions betrays you in the end since they are also just mercenaries paid to fight the war and has no loyalty for you.
      Farcry 3 is the blueprint that ubisoft has been using for everything hunting, towers, rpg upgrades, the heroic character, personal dialogue, largely disparate set pieces from the gameplay - these are all Farcry 3
      Farcry 2's key mechanics were never iterated upon - Arma 3's campaign (especially chapter 2) is the closest to Farcry 2 than any subsequent Farcry games, very diegetic systems like physical maps and mortar aiming sights, player disempowerment and chaos that deliberately harms players than enemies so every fight is a scrap for survival even with your best plans and equipment.

    It’s probably been mentioned a few times but the reason Vass dies off halfway through to be replaced by Mr. Snetterton is Vass was never really in the original design doc to begin with. Michael Mando showed up to audition for one of the random pirates and the casting guys were so impressed by his hamming it up that they ended up making Vass from him. But by this point the character of Hoyt as the big bad had already been established so they made Vass his hench lunatic instead.

      @@dbfan199 That is true but still he kind of felt like a secondary character. He didn't even really seem to care what you did (he's barely even the villian really) and thematically his only connection with you was knowing your mom.
      Vaas may have been under utilized but not only was he a direct threat to Jason that Jason had no choice but to deal with, he was his thematic foil.
      Vaas was someone who became cruel and unhinged due to always living a life of hardship and violence. And kind of the classic dark reflection of the protagonist.
      He wanted to torture and you bc you basically represented everything he hated, a spoiled rich kid who never suffered. And then as you progress you become more like him as you are forced into a world he was groomed in.
      The same issue with Pagan is there with Joseph, and even less of any narrative connection. He's interesting in a vaccum but in contrast to you, you're just a cop delaying with his cult, there's no personal throughline between you and him or anything going on really.
      You're basically an empty shell and it makes the villian less compelling bc of that lack of any real connection. Even the best cop vs criminal stories try to make it somehow emotionally resonant with the cop.
      These disconnects make the impact of Pagan and Joseph so much less, bc you're just kind of there (esp with Pagan, like you have literally no reason to get involved, the game even acknowledges that with the secret ending).

      Me : _Far Cry 3_ :: Yahtzee : _The Last of Us._ I never got the appeal of the story. Vaas seems to be the main draw for most, but to me, he's about as cliche and boring as a villain can get, hopping around bug-eyed and setting up "crazy" perils with no impact that just ran the clock down, like a sidekick antagonist from a bottom-tier 007 rip-off. He might as well twirl a curly mustache with Muttley laughing behind him. The other villains are a snooze, the backstory seems to mean nothing as the hero could (and did, in my game) constantly ignore the friends he was working to save. Yet when I was given the choice to kill them & help rule the island, I still thought, _"...who on earth would kill to _*_stay_*_ here? This place _*_sucks."_*

    The good/bad ending is a testament to the game's theme of insanity - that is doing things over and over again without learning anything.
    See, the island is used to war and death. The Chinese did it, the Japanese did it, the pirates are doing it. They all ended up dying in the end because they never stopped fighting. They never stopped taking lives and trying to kill each other. If you go through the entire game killing everything, culminating with killing your friends, then you die as well. But if you do something different - spare lives - you get a different result.

      In fact, all aggressive animals in this game have caught me off guard at least once. When I was a kid, I was terrified of enemies that come up close and use melee attacks, especially animals and dudes with machetes. If I played this around the age of 6-11, I would be too scared to go anywhere without a vehicle.

      the only thing i liked about hoit was that his army was an actual paramilitary organization in contrast to the well armed but poorly trained and disciplined pirates. i also like the idea that the main villain was in reality, a lap dog to another. however more time could have been spent making hoit relatable and hateable like vas. vas was a unique villain in such a way that he was, on some twisted level, relatable and human whilst being just enough of a monster that we killed him with both glee and pity. the jason's character arch after he kills vas is also amazing, he feels like he is becoming the monster he killed. the problem was that hoit was just some generic villain who had generic villain motives. i felt nothing when i killed him, the only reason it was fun was because of his army, the new but familiar setting, and the upgraded gear. just i love how the game setting changes to that island we see in the distance and gives us even more weapons, and shit to do. its enough to make the game amazing, i only wish the face of this otherwise respectable and worthy paramilitary opposition wasn't so dull and standard. i found my self missing vas honestly.

      The ending had a lot of potential. The way they play out Vaas' death sort of hinted that he hadn't really died. I mean the character goes onto a freaking acid trip after getting stabbed, and then all you hear is that he has died, but.. that's all the evidence people give to you. They only mention that he is dead and you fittingly enough wake up from that temple again, and last time that happened wasn't even that long ago.
      They could've thrown Vaas into the bad ending, showing up all of sudden, saying outloud one the themes of the game which is "You only see what you want to see" and then be the one to stab the main character to death. Now that would've worked well. But still, Citra stabbing the player to death works as a grim reality call as well, but.. could've been much much better.
      Oh and actually having the choice there is somewhat nice. I mean it's the first moment in the game when Jason is finally questioning what he is becoming and the trippy sequence before this choice is manipulative and narrow minded, and it's very obvious about trying to brainwash you. So you could say the moment you get the choice is the moment when Jason questions if he has been treated like a tool by others, if he is turning into a monster.
      Or that's what I think they were trying to do, there's just so much wasted potential in the story and the atmosphere contradicts with the gameplay so much that it just ends up being a mess of ideas which were poorly executed.. Good start, but quickly fell apart.

    The only thing I didn't like about this game was that at the beginning, Jason basically knows nothing about combat or guns or survival. Ten minutes later, he's wasting pirates with all kinds of weaponry and tracking wildlife like a seasoned hunter. There's no real transition between the two.

      There is a gradual transition in his character just not gameplay-wise. Jason still doesn't like doing those things until much later. I think the first time I realized that he was enjoying himself was when he rescued Liza and was driving away in the Jeep.
      I kind of like the way they did it since the game was fun from the start instead of being forced to play hours while being horribly inaccurate and bad in combat. Like so many RPG's do. Sure it doesn't makes sense but it wouldn't be very fun.
      That would also completely kill replayability for me.

Now guns aren't easy to use so the fact that he can even handle a fully auto weapon is a little dumb, but the totally normal gun toting dude you are in the beginning, is no-where near the badass you are by the time you kill Vaas, much less beat the game.

    I will admit, more endings would be nice. I didn't want to go back to civilization with Lisa who only proves to be a bitch, or stay with the even crazier Citra, leader of the Rakyat, who did absolutely nothing ever. I would appreciate an ending where you become the full monster, or even make a power-hungry 180 and rebuild Vaas and Hoyt's pirate empire. Those sort of evil endings should exist and should be as disgusting as they need to be to drive moral people off, but the whole "take the really obvious good ending or die unexpectedly" is just stupid. With Far Cry 4 around the corner, returning with a multiple character system again and all that FC3 money, I hope we can do things like that this time around.

      Yeah, _Far Cry 3's_ ending is nonsense. The game starts off with a hero who has friends, freedom to see the world & a close-knit family. He loses everything, and the game gives the player the goal of regaining most of it. There's a tragic death & he falls out with his girlfriend, which might change his outlook if she were his whole world, *_if he weren't trying to save his kid brother from Murder Isle._* There's a flashback that I think was meant to show his old life was hollow, but... _sexy nightclub vs. _*_killer birds that kick holes in your chest?_* Then the ending says, _"Ah, but he _*_loves_*_ Hell Island now, he might just..._ (squinting) *_not save the kid brother he just saved? The reason FC3 was so spliced is because it was just that. They never intended to Vaas in the game until MIchael Mando tried out for Hoyt, and knowing he wasn't what they wanted he did something totally off script and they liked it so much that they made Vaas and even modeled him after Michael's likeness. So yeah, I think Vaas was a great villain even if he was a bit shoe-horned into the game. I think a better route would of been to have the Vaas fight actually not a Vaas fight, (maybe while on drugs from Citra or something wacky, FC4 did something like this but no spoilers). So thinking Vaas is dead you go and kill Hoyt, but turns out Vaas isn't dead and he comes back to takes Hoyt's place then you have the actual fight with him. I will say that Ubisoft certainly did learn from their mistakes with FC3 and main antagonists. FC4, while still not perfect, seems to have a much smoother conflict with the villains, and while the "boos" fights are little essentially cut scenes they are so well blended and concealed within actual game play that is is something very believable. I think the more accurate "boss endings" are more events that anticipation builds up to and the realism of the game blends it in to a point that makes it so believable. With having 4 actual "bosses" as the antagonists (only 2 of which I have defeated after 30 some hours of gameplay), Having each boss death be different really adds to the game. So even though the story feels slightly choppy and kind of mediocre at sometimes gotta say FC4, easy 9.5/10. Well shit, FC3 rant turned to FC4 review, ah well.

      I didn't like the endings either, but I'm in total agreement with you that the previous 30 hours of the game more than make up for it. "you won't recall anything except the ending itself alone. so why should you plant a bad memory in your mind?" Hah... Dead wrong for me. What I'm going to remember are all the fun adventures I had in the time leading up to the ending. Far Cry 3 is by far one of the best first person shooters I've ever played.
      My only real complaint with the game is its lack of replay value. Once you've done everything and bought everything in the shop, there's little incentive to play the game again. The only real change you can make is the ending, and in that case it's a lot easier to just come to RUclips and watch the ending you didn't choose.

      Thanks to the updates, they have added a new difficulty setting and the ability to reset the outposts. So if you're a creative player and like setting challenges for you and such, you can get a lot out of redoing the outposts again and again.
      And about the endings.. Well, I see what they were going for. The supposed good ending makes logical sense, since you finally break free from the addiction that has been controlling you the entire time in the islands, break free from the manipulation and finally stop being a tool. Of course it won't be a happy ending, reality doesn't work like that. Yes, the game has plenty of reality meets fantasy moments, but it doesn't use these that well.
      The bad ending is a missed opportunity. Sure, it's a reality wake up call, reminder that Jason has a savior complex, that Citra is no damsell in distress and that you were never in power. Killing is your drug and Citra is the drug dealer that is controlling your life. "Killing feels like winning." "I'm finally in control of my life." Jason pretty much goes through different phases of heavy addiction..
      But it's not exactly done well enough for it to work that well. Jason sees only what he wants to see, which is one of the reasons I questioned Vaas' death. It would've been perfect if he had showed up in the bad ending, had repeated the definition of insanity or said that you see what you wish to see, and then would stab you to death. Now that's a much more effective ending.
      So yeah.. the endings feel dissapointing but I think that's kinda the idea behind them. Doesn't change the fact that they feel rushed and have plenty of missed potential.

    • @Shark__Sunny
      @Shark__Sunny 10 лет назад +1

      Personally I can't believe he's moaning so much about the endings of a game he never even fucking played. He wanted the ending but had no opinion of any of the characters or any idea about any of the events in the game that gave you said opinion about such characters.
      So in the end the ending would be bad to him because he had no idea what any of the game was about and never will because he refuses to invest the time into it and play it because , as you said, was missing the point entirely.
      Sure a game is supposed to be played and finished but it's not all about the ending. Even the absolute worst games you ever played could have the most amazing endings you've ever witnessed, but if the game is really so bad you'll never get there anyway because you don't link anything about the game you've encountered thus far.
      In the end ending are virtually meaningless. Of course we'd all love a good ending, but as long as you enjoyed the rest of the game then who cares? There's so much more to experience than an ending to a game. And if you're an LP maker then the whole point is to play even the most boring game and make it entertaining for those who are watching not sit silently through said game thinking people are watching your entire LP just to see an ending which, to be honest, they wouldn't. Because they'd just do the same thing he did and look up the ending.

      I got to say, I never knew there was an update with a new difficulty level. Maybe I finished it before that update came around. But a new difficulty is one of the things I wanted, since the difficulty below that was much too easy for me. Thanks for telling me. I'm replaying the game on master difficulty now and having a great time :)
      The good ending is definitely the logical conclusion to the story. I have to admit there's not much else you could do with that ending once Jason and his friends have escaped the island. Perhaps there could have been one last fight with Citra and her personal guard before you can escape?
      Your idea for the bad ending sounds good too, where Vaas reappears. I'm with you in that I didn't feel like I really killed Vaas, considering you fight him in one of those bits where you're all drugged up and you're not sure what's real and what's not. I don't know what else they could have done, but I feel like something more should have happened besides Citra just killing you.

    • @Arexion5293
      @Arexion5293 10 лет назад +2

      NailStrafer
      You can change the difficulty on the fly, so just reload your most complete save, put on the Master difficulty, reset all the outposts and have fun. The more creative you get, the more you'll have fun.
      Eh.. I think it's better without any sort of fight. Unless it would've been another hallucination scene.
      I read one of the interviews where the point out how Jason sees Citra as a princess needing her white knight, when in reality she is a powerful and controlling woman. I mean how would she be a princess if she isn't good at controlling people?
      I have to admit that I like that there's a choice at the end, kinda showing metaphorically that Jason is starting to see through the manipulation and is able to think for himself for once. And I'm pretty sure that making the player feel cheated was the goal of these endings, so they succeeded in that part. Still.. could've been much better.

    It is honestly my favourite game of all time. I have played through it three times, and each playthrough was about 40 hours. This game is just great, I don't really know how to describe it. Character development is excellent, as Yahtzee points out. Graphics are amazing, even now, storyline is interesting and compelling, but the open sandbox world means you can choose to do it whenever you want, and spend the rest of the time hunting goats with RPGs. it has basically everything I look for in a game, and it is what I base my view of other games off. I love it, and I've been hard-pushed to find anybody who doesn't. I bought it for the low price of £3.74 through Steam sales, but I'd happily pay 10x that much when I look at all the fun this game has given me. Just go and buy it...

    ending was bad and the story to me was just a little too jarring...outside of the story i am some high as fuck tosser hunting bears with a rpg because that is fun and that is what i want to do, have fun but then you get to the story bits and it is all slaves and death and abuse and rape and it just kills the fun instantly for me...but the rest was pretty fucking gold,
    hopefully farcry 4 is going to be as good if better.

For a trivial amount of leaves you can: see crocodiles ahead of time, run unharmed through a forest fire, increase your health twofold, spot every ostrich, tiger, hippo in range for those hunting missions, etc. I felt like superman throughout, syringes are crazy.

    See I'll be honest, Story ENDING was where Far Cry 3 really flopped. Gameplay was good, character progression was neat, sandboxing was fun, yada yada, but the ENDINGS were absolute SHIT. And I think this is so for a couple of reasons, (SPOILERS BELOW)
    Okay so when I first beat the game I went with the "Save your Friends" option. Made a lot of sense, I did all this shit TO save them I might as well get them home, before Jason Brody eventually loses his shit and ends up, dead, in prison, or on death row because he can no longer function in a normal society. But then comes the awkward twist where Dennis ACCIDENTALLY kills WhatsHerFace (I honestly can't remember at the moment, wasn't it Citra?). And to me this felt like a really cheap tactic to give both endings weight. Sure you save your friends but then this lady who helped you save them dies, albeit in an incredibly stupid and avoidable way.
    And then theres the 2nd ending. Also known as: "Kill the people you became a warrior to rescue, so that you have some nice PG-13 sex with WhatsHerFace, impregnate her, and then get KILLED." Do I even HAVE to explain why that endings a load of shit? Honestly both of these endings are just bad. Which upsets me because this game actually had a fairly strong OST behind it, to the point where the credits theme has that nice crescendo that sends a little chill down your spine, but it all went to waste on the awful endings.

    So I finally had time to get around to this and so far I'm liking it. Stealth is fun, the stuff like freeing tigers in enemy bases to cause mayhem is great, the environment is really pretty even on the lower graphical settings, and stealthily ganking individual enemies until there's only one guy left and you can walk up behind him, go "Yo" and bust his shocked cap in with a shotgun is incredibly fun.
    So far, my only complaint is "Why the hell do these badass island locals need the help of a civilized dude who has no real experience in anything warrior-y to handle 90% of their heavy lifting for them?!" I mean, Jason's almost literally fresh off the boat and they leave all the outpost-liberating to him! I can understand the radio towers bit, because as the tutorial guy says "Our people generally don't give a shit about stuff like that", but why do they want me to free all these outposts on my own?!
    I say 90% though because they DID at one point help me with something. I'm there taking on a "wanted dead" mission, and I'm stealthily approaching the roadside farm where the target is, when suddenly a car with 4 Rakyat Fighters squeals down the road, and they all jump out and murder the guy I was on my way to assassinate. XD

      Ironically, if they DID give a shit about the cell towers, they probably wouldn't be getting their arses kicked as much, due to having access to only the basic AK-47 (which is for some reason terrible in the game)

    "I opted to stay on the Island rather than go home but without wishing to spoil that ending is shit!"
    Just finished the game and after seeing that ending Yatzee talked about from RedBard, that ending IS total shit that it's stupid. It's just so out of place and out of context of what plays out in the first ending.
    But I found Jason's little monolog after making the better choice make me feel vindicated. It's like the ending of Tomb Raider. (Funny because Far Cry 3 and Tomb Raider's stories are very similar to each other)

    I love the game but playing the story makes me cringe. I can't stand Jason Brody. I just can't. You don't gradually gain skill as a fighter. one moment he stabs a guy in self defense and freaks out. His next kill is when he empties an entire base without a single word. To put it elegantly, Jason Brody, while having a believable character, is an insufferable douche and I would have preferred a badass with military training in his place. Who could I suggest? Oh maybe his brother that dies in the first 5 minutes of gameplay.
    (SPOILER ALERT) (SPOILER ALERT) The ending was bad either way but at least with the good ending I got to watch Citra die. While Farcry 2 lacked in characters, the gameplay is way better. It's like comparing STALKER to Fallout. One is for the smaller group of hardcores that like a challenge, and the other is for people who prefer being a walking badass. I'm not saying one is better than the other, but I feel FC2 is and will remain the best.

    • @SuperArppis
      @SuperArppis 10 лет назад +4

      I loved FC2 the best as well.
      The fact that the missions let you do things YOUR WAY is just so awesome. I was hoping they would have done that for the 4th game. But they ofcourse went for totally scripted "wander outside this zone and it's game over!"-style again. Sad to see that.
      This said, I didn't have any problems with Jason's persona, he seemed just fine.

    One of my favorite moments so far in FC3 was when I scoped out a pair of pirates on the road near some jeeps. I sniped one guy, but before I could down his friend another vehicle showed up and joined the fray.
    After quickly dropping one of the new dancers to our roadkill tango, the two remaining fellows decided to jump in the car and run me over. So after a quick shot to the driver's forehead, the car spun out of control and flung the passenger out before rolling on top of the guy. T'was great.

    I was disappointed with the the story of Farcry 3 :(
    They should've introduced Hoyt much earlier and made Vaas kill him by the second half and as such, he would take over and fuckin rip the islands some new assholes!
    They could have also added a secret ending in case you concluded everything and make Jason explain to Citra that a warrior and hunter kills with a purpose and refuse to kill his friends, thus sending them off to their home while he stayed behind.
    It would've worked out so much better... :\

    • @disturbedrocks1996

      I personally think that Far Cry 3 is best when Dennis or Citra AREN'T around and you can just run around, brutally killing pirates and mercenaries. Sorry if you liked those two. I couldn't stand Citra or Dennis.

    • @KRIMZONMEKANISM
      @KRIMZONMEKANISM 11 лет назад

      the problem though is how the game ended, and how Vaas was so easily killed off, it woud be fun though if ocasionally some of your previously conquered bases were taken over by the pirates again, cuz that way the game would keep its fun for much longer, in fact, the moments when you were scouting the area for the best way to approach is incredibly fun and satifying. :)

      KRIMZONMEKANISM i agree with this guy. i mean, in most firefights between the Rakyat and the pirates, i see the pirates win, and having them retake bases would be cool. however, it could be seen as irritating/repetitive or padding to extend the game, and just gives the idea Jason has to do everything. but if introduced correctly, i think it's a good shout

    'SPOILERS'
    1) Kill the hot chick and save the douche friends who I could've cared less about by that point and go back home to a life of normalcy rather than king-hood.
    2) Stay on the island as a king, only to get gut stabbed and told my kid will be the new ruler.
    Why can't I just let my "friends" go and stay on the island as the drug infused warlord I made myself, and while I'm at it, not get stabbed by the chick and live to see my kid become the new king after me.

    I think the story was waaaaay too much up it's own as for my taste (the lead writer even made a butthurt comment in an interview about people "not getting it") so I didn't even finish it.
    BUT at that point I basically did all there is to do in the game. Freed all the outposts, did all the sidemissions, got all the weapons and unique variants and fully leveled up my character so the game definitely was a ton of fun and very creative in many cases. The story and the 30FPS Console version is really the only issue I had.

    Most of the camps have pretty unique layouts, so when you spend a bunch of time on an awesome plan and a tiger comes in and beats you to it you can't use the awesome plan you made. The developers said that they're making a reset function so you can re-take all the camps but until then it's kind of annoying to waste a good strategy.
