      isaac garris It's absolutely true. Search "far cry 4 alternate ending". I actually prefer it to the "real" endings, because it actually makes sense. A slightly unhinged dictator captures you and takes you to his house, do you A) join a guerrilla resistance movement, strap yourself with as many guns and explosives as you can carry and go to town, or B) just sit tight and hope it all works out?

    My number one complaint I had with this game, and this may be somewhat subjective, is that after every single main story mission, the person you didn't agree with on how to go about the mission traps you in a room for 5 minutes to scream at you about why they were right, you are an idiot, and everything is now ruined.
    There's no chance to defend your actions, no input from the other character you did back up, you just have to sit there and be screamed at for taking what you decided was the most morally correct action.
    I hated it. It felt like my character's agency was being totally undermined, since the game effectively decided that every single choice was the wrong one.

      +Klishar122 The Pagan ending would be fine if the game would actually have the balls to let you ride this helicoper attack on the rebels and maybe end the game after the attack on the base. But i guess you cant make a game where you play for the ruthless dictator.

    I started pretending the main character in Far Cry 4 was actually a CIA android from the future, based on the fact that we only have his word that he's actually here for the whole mum's ashes deal, the weird visual glitches my AMD video card caused that I dismissed as HIS video card glitches (to preserve my sanity), the fact that he can tag enemies, the HUD, the fact that like the previous games he only ever takes damage to his left forearm (it's clearly a patch of synthetic skin to show off in case someone accuses him of being a cyborg), and that I unlocked what was absolutely Robocop's gun from the future.

    Far Cry 4 highlights my main problem with open world game lately. Basically you're a kid sitting in a huge sandbox with way too many toys, and no idea where to start. The kicker being the toys are all different colors of the same bucket and shovel. In this case you also look to the side to see there are many other sandboxes that look exactly like yours with the names Assassin's Creed and Watch Dogs plastered on the side.
    You have the fast and beautiful worlds, but they are populated by things to do that amount to absolutely nothing. So you find your self just sweeping away at the map until you eventually get to 100% completion.

      Suruga Kanbaru about the whole "so many toys, no idea where to start" thing:
      Skyrim does the same thing, and look how good that game was. I don't get the problem of being lost in the world. It just sucks you in more.

    • @JustinWayneTM
      @JustinWayneTM 9 лет назад +8

      Daemeon 93 Ya it certainly does. There is something special about Oblivion and Skyrim though. Not sure if I could put my finger on it exactly but it does it well. Probably because in Elder Scrolls you have the map littered with dungeons. Each dungeon may reuse textures but the layouts are all different.
      Most of them usually end with a breadcrumb trail that takes you onto the next area as well. I think that's what missing from some open world games though. A sense of purpose.
      "I'm going in this cave to grab this heirloom sword and kill this Bandit leader. " feels better than going to liberate bad dude camp 3/10.

    • @Azumongo

      Suruga Kanbaru I played Saints Row IV and it felt like what Yahtzee described. Doing the missions and finding clusters felt like doing it just so it's done. That's the same thing motivating me to finish short boring games or play for another 5 minutes to unlock a last silly achievement I'm missing... that can't be a good sign for gameplay.
      In some way games like Saints Row IV feel like one of the old "200 games in 1" packages. You can do 200 things but none of them feel polished enough to be fun. If I have the choice between playing 200 different low-quality Mario clones or a single good game I'd pick the latter. Seriously, the amount of times Saints Row IV tried to be something else than simply Saints Row is staggering: Why am I racing around firewalls? Why am I climbing towers? Why am I suddenly playing an Endless Runner game?
      And most importantly: Why doesn't this have any purpose except some number of "mission of type X completed" going up by 1?

    They could've had you try to escape Kyrat in the beginning after meeting Pegan Min and you get stopped by Pegan Min on the way out and the rebels save you so you fight for them knowing its your only way out. That would've made more sense then, meh lets kill cause yolo.

      Neenjah Rammus I gotta ask, why are so many people interested in siding with the unidimensional children cartoon-tier villain? I mean, I like him as well, especially considering he makes the game feel "lighter" and more fun. But come on, am I over empathizing when I feel unable to side with a character that is leeching off a whole country, making everyone's lives poor and miserable for no real reason?
      To be honest, the character feels completely incompetent to me. He's supposed to have conquered a country from the inside, meaning he'd need to be clever and charismatic. Instead, we see a narcissistic men who can't really do anything to stop the Mighty Foreigner Who Just Arrived from single-handedly conquering all of his territory. And that's not to mention the ABSOLUTELY unnecessary level of "evilness" he employs to... what, acquire wealth? Come on, you don't need slave labor when you have fucking taxes for everything. At first this shit sounded so unreal that I thought maybe the game was set in the middle of last century or something. He could be ungodly rich and still at least pretend to give people everything they need, so the rebels would be a lot weaker. Same goes for Yuma, who was supposed to be super smart and pragmatic but for no fucking reason just let the situation escalate to a point of no return.
      God, this must have been one of the worst written games I've ever played. And I'm very easy to please.

    While both are pretty damn strong villains, Pagan Min is a bit less obviously villainous.
    Vaas is just a psychopath that does psychopathic things because he's a psychopath, but Pagan Min can almost be seen as a pseudo good guy in Far Cry 4 (especially considering the secret ending).

I hear some people say this games story is Spec Ops-ish in that its actually more about YOU the PLAYER, but I havent finished the game yet so I cant speak to that. It would make sense though, since Ajay is in such a rush to get the game started he forgets to have motivation.

    • @Never_heart
      @Never_heart 9 лет назад +35

      Not anywhere close to Spec-Ops. Really Farcry 4 is the developers trying to remake the golden egg that was Farcry 3 and they latched onto that Vaz was the only reason it was so amazing. Yes Vaz an almost Joker like villian was fucking amazing but everything else with it made it the masterpiece. Yes Farcry 4 is fun but honestly your better off replaying the 3rd game instead. Yez I do regret buying it on release day

    • @Remlap1223
      @Remlap1223 9 лет назад +37

      GeakGuySheldon Yahtzee nails it on the head. Vaas wasn't "TEH BEST VIDYHA GAME VILLAN EVAH!!1!", it was the fact that Jason Brody has some HUGE character development. He goes form a privileged rich boy on vacation, to a scared kid trying to survive, to a hardened killer turning into the thing he's fighting against. Jason's interactions with Vaas show how he is single minded in his goal of vengeance (and nailing Citra) so much so that it alienates his friends, and changes him as a person. I've yet to play Far Cry 4, but from what Yahtzee is saying is that Pagan Min is a Vaas clone without the great protagonist to the antagonist.

    • @Blacknight8850
      @Blacknight8850 9 лет назад

      Remlap1223 I think a lot of that deliberately took advantage of the player's own motivation in a very clever way - "Don't wanna rescue this guy's dumb hipster friends, wanna shoot tigers and be a badass!" etc. Especially in the "bad ending" when Citra literally says "You won." Plus even if it was delibearate, Spec Ops was such a chore to play many never got to see the message at the heart of it before they gave up. Hopefully Far Cry 4's got something up it's sleeve like 3 did in that regard.

    5:26 - I think that was the whole point of the story: what was the point of all that killing? What, to liberate the country? Pagan Min was going to hand it over to you on a silver platter, seeing as how you were his stepson.
    So in the end, yeah, the smart thing to do is just sit at the start and wait for Pagan to come back for you.

    Finally. I've been reading reviews and I don't see many people acknowledging the inferior story and characters, in comparison to FC3. I know many people had issues with FC3's story, but it hit the basic bullet points by giving purpose to the character (survival at first, then rescue, then revenge, and among all that, becoming this tribal warrior while being guided/manipulated by Citra - depending on interpretation) . In FC4, I had to struggle to suspend my disbelief and just kept going through the motions. I actually like the ending and I appreciate the original writing that ties the beginning to the end, but that's just two cutscenes worth of content; everything in between is kinda meh. The gameplay's fine though, so it's still a fun game to play, but if someone had to pick between the two, I'd recommend FC3 instead.

    • @SmigGames
      @SmigGames 9 лет назад +4

      Yeah, that was a little too convenient but I wouldn't call it a plot hole since we don't see what REALLY happens. Btw, you could also interpret those moments as supernatural in nature which would explain Jason's unlikely success. I believe the game doesn't force one particular interpretation of the story on the player.

    • @SonofTiamat
      @SonofTiamat 9 лет назад +2

      ***** Okay, okay, we get it. They made the game all meta and shit so all the hipsters who see it for what it is can tip their fedora hats at each other in acknowledgement. Who cares? Some of us like a little more context to mindless killing via a good story and we're sorry for that.

    • @SonofTiamat
      @SonofTiamat 9 лет назад +1

      ***** Point is, who says video games can't have good stories? Criticizing Far Cry 4's story as being inferior to 3's is legitimate. And trying to break the fourth wall isn't edgy, it's kind of overdone so I'm not impressed.

    I really preferred the multiple island set up over the continous jungle. It allowed me to basically sweep an island and just keep an eye on the water for gunboats. Now like Zahtzee said the animals are almost to numerous. And because of the set up they can spawn across the map and theoretically walk to you and attack you. Obviously this didn't happen, I hope but at the same time I wouldn't be surprised because I seriously could never find good sniping spots that i didn't get attacked by some animal regardless of how much time I spent clearing out the area of animals.

    I want a Far Cry game where you play as the evil dictator. You can build outposts wherever you like, and then fight alongside your NPC soldiers to defend them against the rebels. Add an optional human opponent to lead the rebels, and you could have player generated, large scale epic battles going on, all from a first person perspective.

    You are trapped there, like in far cry 3. You are rescued by the people you help, and without eliminating the enemies, you won't be able to get out. You also want to find out more about your mother and father, and much of the plot is unraveling their past. I found that many of the side characters were well done and clearly defined, and the Shangri la missions were as interesting as they were beautiful.

    2:10 you can actually do this in game. If in the very starting mission in the villains house, he will ask you to wait for a minute while he does something. You would usually take this opportunity to run away but if you actually wait there in game, like he asked you, he will spread your ashes and you will go home and the game will end. This means you can finish the game in about 10 minutes

  • @SirMordred524

    I really don't think being similar to the previous game is a bad thing, since Far Cry 3 was awesome. Far Cry 4 is its predecessor with a few new things added, which is just fine by me, since I know I'll be having a blast just like I did in Far Cry 3. And right now, I definitely am!
    But I do agree that the story is inferior to the last, to the point where it actually bothers me a little. I don't feel motivated to fight with the Golden Path against Pagan. Rather, I'm just going along with it.
    But what really bugs me is how much of a fucking doormat Ajay is. He just goes along with what people say, doing what people tell him to do. This really shows when I'm forced to choose between Amita or Sabal for the next mission, because if I choose one, I get scolded by the other for not siding with them. I decided to side with Amita for the first mission, but after being scolded by Sabal, I actually felt bad because I let people die, and I can understand why he's so emotional over it. But for the next mission, I chose to side with Sabal and burn down the drug fields rather than take them, which is what Amita wanted me to do. And when she scolded me for that, I didn't buy any of it. I felt that she was mad at me ONLY because I didn't side with her. Again, I could understand Sabal being angry with me for letting people die, but when Amita started giving me lip, I just wanted to step in and be like, "Look bitch, I'm sorry I took away your opportunity to get high, but there's no reason to be THIS upset over it. Get over yourself!" But no, Ajay just remains mostly silent and takes her verbal beatings.
    With all of that said, it's still an awesome game. I'm having just as much fun as I did with Far Cry 3, and there's nothing wrong with that.

    Let's go back to Vaas. He was underexplored and clearly has a backstory worth revisiting. There could be an entire Far Cry where you play as a young Vaas, climbing the ranks of his pirate gang and making the transition into a ruthless lunatic. It'd be great to claim all the land that Jason Brody will years later take back. Vas's transition from youthful innocence to murderous lunacy would essentially be following the same path that Jason Brody did, but with a totally different outcome ("Did I ever tell you the definition of insanity?")
    Start it off with Citra and Vaas's parents being killed by a pirate gang. During the raid Vaas makes his first kill protecting Citra from being taken away to be made a slave. In seeking revenge for his parents' death, Vaas anonymously joins the same pirate gang that killed his parents and climbs the ranks to get at the people that murdered his parents. As he climbs the ranks, the thirst for revenge fades away and he descends into a power fantasy that changes him into a monster.

      Then, I got to the ending of the game...
      I still liked the second half of the game, but it felt more like an 80's action thriller instead of a survival game like the first half of the game.
      Really, they could have sold them as completely separate games.
