Speed runs of my DIY Twin mono. How to set up for speed?

  • Speedrunning my DIY twin motor mono RC boat 'G-Force'.
    The boat is still not setup correct. Itchine-walks and becomes unstable at high speed, resulting in some crashes.
    The hunt fir the correct speedrun setup continues!
    Boat spec:
    Length: 850mm or 33.5"
    Width: 245mm or 9.6"
    Esc: 2x 150A Flycolor:

    Motor: 2x Rocket 3670 1850kV:

    Lipo: 2x CNHL 6S 3Ah & 4Ah
    Drive: dual DIY stingers
    Props: 43mm 1.6 pitch
    Speed goal: 140 km/h or 87.5mph

    Love that sound of twin motors, also this boat has a certain graceful movement

    We all know that's different from boat to boat. But I found thin rudder blades not creating that much drag for sure, but in my example also not turning the boat much better into the corner and during the corner. I think that have something to do with turbulences? If you move thin rudder blade in small angle to the driving direction, the outer side is in the almost the same angle as inner one (which helps created turbulences?). With more V shaped the outer side stays more straight with driving direction. It's also much more stable in the straight line, in my case. I tried more that ten blades with different shapes and sizes.....but yes, on my own boat.... Also it's a question if thin blade is still rigid enough to avoid "flutter" in high speeds.

      Yes that's right, what works for one boat doesn't work for another, especially considering that they are DIY, but hey, we try help each other, and yes, I think your theory is good, maybe a different blade can help, there are two propellers that rotate with approx. 40K throwing water at her

      Thanks for your comment! I suspect the rudder to be the cause because I didn't really have this issue before (with the old rudder).
      I do have a slight slop between the rudder hinge shaft and the rudder block. I will change the pin for a slightly bigger one to eliminate that. You could be right that the rudder flutters at high speed! I'm considering a thicker blade, too. Just to make it more stiff.
      I have to say, I have good experience with knife thin rudder blades. My Wildthing has one, too, and my Hydromite mini hydro. Both boats have great cornering performance. ✌️

    I noticed all these hi-speed crashes looked all bit same to me (the way they happen)...So i was thinking, what makes it to act like that? Is it something im just thinking or is it something you can out a finger on? Interesting...
    Nevertheless, nice runs.

      Thanks Peter, the boat doesn't handle great at the moment. I suspect the rudder (slight slop, it may flutter). And I think it needs trim tabs. Even the cockpit hatch might have a negative effect, as the boat handled pretty good with the flat hatch plate. I will sort it out!

      It's very interesting to see how you tackle the one and other problems. You definitely share my thoughts about being still but to squirly at the moment. My (single) mono had some "strange behavior" before blueprint and running with the hi-rake props (abc style). It could also make very unpredictable crashes, strange jumps, etc ..

      @@peteroosterhoff8850 It also took me a while before my Wildthing was sorted out. But once it was, it was an absolute blast to run. It's still my speed record boat 😎

    You may need strakes

      Thanks for thinking along, James. I'm no expert, but reading from the experts, I understood that strakes basically generate lift. Actually, I think my boat has too much lift at the moment. I will try several improvements, such as a slop-free rudder and trim tabs.

      @@CozyRC I think strakes do give lift but I also think they create less chance of tipping all the way over until it hits the chine just like the chine stops the boat rolling up on its side.
      You could double side tape some in for a try.
      Solid balsa shaped is an easy temporary way to try
