    PLEASE READ:
    I was shocked at what I was able to pull off from the Art of Pekiti Tirsia, a weapons based system from the Philippines, in a live energy fight. This is an art exploration in a sportive context. I am not making any claims as to the efficacy and validity of what I have learned in a self defense situation...and I hope to god that no opportunity presents itself where I get to find out.
    I am exploring my culture and heritage through the Filipino Martial Arts. This is for me...and I just want to share the experience with you. -GN
    If you'd like to supplement your learning or if you don't have access to a good FMA instructor near you...I HIGHLY suggest the online curriculum offered by www.Pekiti.University --- I am biased because I filmed the content...but it was this curriculum that helped me train on my own and reach a level of respectable proficiency.

    As one of my instructors used to say "If you ever pull this off in real life, make sure somebody records it or i won't believe you." Training is a reference point , it rarely if ever looks the same in a real exchange , BUT sometimes it's pretty close. Things get longer and wilder but those sticks are meant to be blades, imagine all the damage that would have been done

      When I first started watching these kinds of matches I was highly critical of FMA because the live energy sparring didnt look like the practice I saw in training...well, I believe that to be a symptom of me not know what to look for. Slowing it down with commentary like this really helps and I hope it helps others as well.

    This is the best arnis fight in RUclips history. Correct me if I am wrong. Most other arnis videos are just hitting without thinking, because they have armors, they easily forgot the fact that these sticks are supposed to be swords or bladed weapons, so, what they do is just let their opponent hit them cuz they armor anyway. And that is why I believe this is the best sparring video I have ever seen, because they are thinking of what will happen if they are hit. I am not even an expert in Filipino Martial Arts(FMA) but this is just basic observation.

    I liked how they put some Capoeira ginga into the Kali footwork. It seems to transition well into Kali so long as you have the fundamentals down.

  • @laurellentwine
    @laurellentwine 4 года назад +70

    This is the kind of match I was expecting in the SEA games arnis tournament, where both competitors aren't fully armored so that they will be considerate in their tactics on how to trade blows in carefully manner, in this match I've seen a lot of moves that highlights the best of arnis, like a near disarm and abanico strikes, it's much more appealing to watch and easy to observe who lands the strikes, unlike in the SEA games both competitors are fully armored which made them much secure and compromise their defense in exchange of getting more landed hits for points, in the untrained eye of any viewers it would seem they are whacking each other in a chaotic manner which ended up arnis being ridiculed at. My suggestion is they changed the rule and the gears. Kinda the same you guys had, and both competitors should wear a fair padded white armors like in the match in the SEA games and the sticks should be changed with something so light yet durable so being hit would be enough to give the idea of being in a live combat so both competitors would not to compromise defense.. and both sticks should have a paint that Indicates the landed hit. Making it more easy to distinguish the landed hits for the viewers, also since it's a paint both competitors will be more careful and would rely on tactics on how to strike their opponent, I find your sparring more appealing than the actual SEA games arnis tournament! I really hope that the arnis org would change that rule

    • @adventleymann8119
      @adventleymann8119 4 года назад +5

      Correct me if I'm wrong but i think the rule system used in SEA Games is what they call the Continuous Rule. Basically the one who's more dominant wins the round. There is also like the one on this vid that they call the Point System rule, who lands first and deflects the coming counter wins.

    This really impressed me :) I really liked the slowmo replays so we could appreciate what just happened.. To the untrained eye the speed makes it hard to see just how much more there is happening than just two guys hitting each other with sticks. I think some of those techniques you executed instinctually are a by-product of your training. You've figured out how to move in certain directions. Even if you never trained those specific techniques... It is possible that you wouldn't have attempted them had it not been from the foundation your training has given you. That's why experienced practitioners of any art will find it easier to learn a new art.. The body can only move in certain ways and once you realize this, the movements become easier to transfer from one style of martial arts to another.

    I love it when filipinos (not all) say that it's for killing only lol, i mean yeah in the past it's mainly for killing but they started adapring to modern times. They'd be like "it's too dangerous and you might kill each other" bruh that's why we train we train to be precise and controlled when hitting each other without armor and gears. Then most of them would reply like: "then that kind of training would be usesless when you need to use it ro defend yourself!" Well you must fix your mindset, when you're sparring with a fellow member ofcourse you'd be controlled, when defending yourself also be controlled but to the point that it's enough to stop the threat (since outright killing him and going ro court evn for self defence might end up making you go to jail) . And then some narrow minded people would be like "if they have no stick they're useless!" Bro you do realize most martial arts systems in this fucking world utilizes improvised wapoms right? HEMA, HAMAA, kali, silat kalariparyattu etc. And kali isn't just swords, daggers spears, shields, but also empty hands.

    • @sigma6656
      @sigma6656 6 лет назад

      HEMA is an organization, you probably should refer to those techniques as MARE (martial arts of renaissance Europe,) which caught on in part thanks to the excellent book of the same name by Sydney Anglo.
      Although I will admit I'm biased due to my ARMA Scholarship.
      I personally really love Kampfringen but it doesn't get nearly enough love.

    • @BobSmith-oo7ei
      @BobSmith-oo7ei 6 лет назад

      Kampfringen, that's a german discipline, right?
      I'm curious about them as they teach techniques with longer weapons that can reasonably be concealed out in the open as it were. Indeed, they can even be argued to simply be weapons of opportunity in the right circumstances which is good for the legal side of things afterwords, while extra reach and lack of need to draw it (since it's already in hand.) seem like they'd help with the practical end of things.

    • @sigma6656
      @sigma6656 6 лет назад

      Kampfringen actually means Grapple-fighting. It's an unarmed discipline. ruclips.net/video/W0fV1oB3j4c/видео.html That stems from knights duking it out in the fields.
      I'm currently working towards mastery of the longsword, got a long way to go, but my next weapon will probably be quarterstaff and dagger. Probably rapier after that in about 10 years.
      Quarterstaff techniques can basically be used with any old stick or pipe you find out in your travels and I guess the same can be said for half-swording ruclips.net/video/vi757-7XD94/видео.html

      @@maximusspes3319 Martial art, is called an art for a reason coz it takes discipline to learn, it involves self defense, and fighting. This one seems sports, no basic, no defense just pure striking based on points without no real meaning. Its things like this that gets arnis and Eskrido disrespected coz they are using it wrong and shouting at the world that kali and arnis are the same when its not. Taga cebu ko brad doce pares for almost 6 years. Since 20 years old ko. Dli ni arnis, sinapat ni.

      @@exogendesign4582 you said "seems sports, no basic, no defense...etc. " Question: do sports have no defense no basics? Boxing for instance is sports. Do you think it has no basic and discipline? It's definitely a contradictory statement. If you really are into any kind of martial arts, you also have the so called MMA or mental martial art or mental defense. GN and those other martial artists with him in this video spent years to learn the basics and the discipline of the arts. Maybe you watch too much movie martial arts. That's choreography for entertainment. This video here it is meant for real fight like that of a "matter-of-life-and-death street fight." in real fight just expect every choreography you see in the movies every demonstrated movement you see in martial arts expo is gone. There is only trained instinct movement or trained reflexes, that if you are trained. Never limit martial arts to a Box of particular knowledge. Get out of the box and you'll see infinite variety of martial arts. Happy to exchange ideas with you BAY. Bisan asa dapita di gyud moatras ang bisdak. Salamat kaayo Bay.

    From watching that I'd say anyone wanting to improve their stick fighting could benefit from doing some fencing, in particular the saber. The footwork and speed of a good fencer is a thing of beauty. Plus you'd be sparring every time you train.
