This film was so well done. I'm kind of in awe of it. I'm no historian, but it looked and felt very authentic to 1750. You are right there with Agnes in the monotony and isolation and hopelessness that it will ever change. And you can't even kill yourself because the hell they taught you to believe in is even worse. The only way out is the unspeakable. So fucked up.
Absolutely
@@entropystings I know, I can’t believe the people back then in charge didn’t realize they were basically causing these murders…
@@Coffeedrinker291I read the book it was based on. The authorities knew they were being played but because of the church they couldn’t do anything about it for a long time.
It's truly one of the saddest movies I've seen. I'm lucky my mother in law "begged for a child," or I wouldn't have my wonderful husband. The pain of your whole life being about religion, being told your only value is procreation, and being forced to marry a man who obviously doesn't want you has got to be excruciatingly painful. Then, being told your only option to avoid hell because your life is such shit is to kill a child and be forgiven is over the top insane. Don't tell me the mother in law didn't know about her son. I know my father in law's family did and didn't do anything to warn off my mother in law to marry him. And the town monsters left Lenz's body with the animal carcasses, that's unforgivable.
In "The Crucible", as in this film, there never was any supernatural events; just lies, hysteria, & mass neurosis.
Also like witchfinder general. There are folk horror’s which don’t go by the typical secret cult in the wilderness trope. And they rely on the hysteria etc like you said 🌸
This was a devastating movie. Just heart-wrenching.
Agreed
I think the guy who killed himself and they just dumped his body on a pit was very triggering for me. Really sad that people look at him like that even after his death. You have to be ready to watch this film. There are lots of disturbing scenes.
It’s definitely a heavy film
Suicides could not be buried in “hallowed ground”. They also thought it would deter others which of course it didn’t.
Evidently, it was believed drinking the blood of an executed prisoner would stave off melancholia.
I really liked this movie. The acting was amazing. It reminded me of a mixture of The Nightingale, Hereditary and Midsommar lol
i love your analysis. I'd say the movie is a pretty obvious critique of religion/the church, it's dogmatic practices, and idiosyncracies.
Absolutely
Drinking a freshly beheaded criminals blood was supposed to be a cure for epilepsy...but it's also different from region to region...it can cure illness but basically ensures good luck and fortune....as a European I can safely say in the Middle Ages and beyond our superstitions are bonkers! It's like the hanged man's hand...bonkers...just to add I thought my German mother in law was bad! X
Thanks for the info!
@sinistercinemareviews5420 no worries fella glad to be of weird assistance xx
Do you have any idea how they squared this practice with Christianity?
@iceprincess2134 no that's the most bonkers bit...it seems like they cherry pick where Christianity starts and superstition and folklore ends...I wish I knew a lot more xx
@@lucygresham3012 Well, I guess the Germanic tribes have always been known to be a little...dark.
I think Wolf was gay and Lenz was his lover and that's why he was so upset when he took himself out
Absolutely
When I watch these reviews it's like being at grad school, getting the dish from my elders, it's such a great place to learn from practiced thinkers. (This particular movie was very difficult since, if you can believe it, I majored in eighteenth century women's studies, quite the whirlwind of uncomfortable realities.)
Would have been great to watch with you then
@@sinistercinemareviews5420 Now that would be an experience to cherish : P
That ending was brutal.
Love this long review!
What movie shirts are y'all wearing?
I am wearing a blood diner shirt, and she is wearing an X-Files shirt
that Blood Diner shirt slaps, also I loved "you will never be alone" lmao
This was so well done! I loved the discussion too🦋
That was bleak...brutal and broke my heart....i totally loved every minute....danke schoen xx
Well, you should know the sexual orientation of your partner before marrying him. That point was so greatly interwoven into the story. DES TEUFELS BAD is a movie you just need to appreciate how well it is done. But considering the world I can´t see myself going back there often if ever again. In Metallica´s words My Friend of Misery. So an 8,5/10 for the movie. If the repeat factor comes into it 6/10. And normally I can fit the two together. Not here!
As a german I was actually happy that I didn´t had the option to turn off the english subtitles. They even helped me out with the austrian accents from time to time. 🙈
Haha
From what I understand, the actress that played Agnes wrote the score of the movie too! And also is not professionally trained as an actress…if I understood the director correctly (it was a little hard to understand his accent), I’m going to go back and read the transcript if they have it. Forgive me if you already mentioned this in the video.
Oh that’s awesome! Thanks for the info. Let us know if you find out more
@@sinistercinemareviews5420 I did go read the transcript and it was her first fiction film! She had been in like two documentaries, that’s it! Brand new to acting. They had someone else all lined up who ended up having to back out and so it just happened. But wow, she’s so amazing, to be that good with no experience or training and also write all the music!
This movie is much more similar to "Hagazussa: A Heathen's Curse" versus "The Witch". It's a grim exploration of being a woman suffering from depression during a really brutal time in Europe way before the Puritans ever set foot in America. It's also more of a moving art piece that juxtaposes the horror against an absolutely beautiful natural backdrop than a pretty heavily dialogue driven movie that is "The Witch". Is there anything supernatural in this? Absolutely not. This is a film about mental illness in a time where people kind of blended their pagan beliefs into their Christianity to make a totally bizarre bloody soup of a group of humans that clearly have some major evolving to do. It's so sad and distressing because Agnes is clearly smarter, kinder and more empathetic than the rest of the tribe. I felt very conflicted about the character of her husband because at times he seems kind but at others he's just so incredibly cold and distant. It was fairly obvious that he was gay and that his lover killed himself and was therefore damned for eternity so I'm assuming that Wolf was also struggling with his own depression and grim, horrible life. Part of me just wishes that he could have developed some sort of relationship with her because damn they were both incredibly lonely and miserable. This may sound terrible but part of me wished he would have just stepped up and had sex with her a few times so that she could have gotten pregnant. Of course it's possible that she could have suffered from depression if she had had a baby but I kind of doubt it. The only joy these women seem to have access to lies within their ability to become mothers and ultimately Agnes would not have been so victimized by her utter isolation and terrible life that led to her depression in the first place. It's neither here nor there though and Agnes just kept falling down the never ending pit of depression and despair. Overall I thought it was a pretty amazing film that broke my heart and made me really angry with humanity as well as religion...
I'm sure most of the things that are confusing you have to do with their culture during that time. Most European cultures kept very strong pagan influences and superstitions even when they practiced Christianity, mostly due to the fact that hundreds of years prior they were forced to convert- or die. There's some really great videos on here that talk about that subject, I would suggest checking them out.
A lot of times people, even non pagans, use body parts and blood of dead people as wards against evil and illness and to even bring good luck. Maybe they had that be such a prominent scene to show the madness and bloodlust of the time, or maybe to illustrate how insane society was.
Thanks for the information
Anybody who had seen any movie with the twist in goodnight Mommy was going to be😅
Haha
[Spoilers]
I took the ending as the town's way to avoid depression.
I liked Goodnight, Mommy. This one was just slow to the point of being tedious. I will check out The Lodge and see how it is.
I never felt the pace in a negative way with this one
I'll watch it and come back
Same here.
It’s definitely up there with witchfinder general.
Loved The Witch...so I'm all in xx
This movie is nothing like The Witch aside from it being a period piece. This isn’t horror, this isn’t supernatural and it makes The Witch seem fast paced
@kena322 why do you class it Supernatural? I'm curious...I definitely found horror in it...I guess it's subjective ...nonetheless I loved every second xx
@@lucygresham3012I said it IS NOT supernatural. The Witch is horror, it’s supernatural. The Devil’s Bath is neither. Read my comment again, I don’t see any similarities in the two films beyond it being a period piece. The only horror elements is at the very beginning and at the very end. Between that is 2 hours of character study and drama. Good for you and everyone else who enjoyed this somehow. I just hate the comparison to The Witch, a way more enjoyable movie to me
@kena322 wow I am sorry I misread.....
I’ve just seen this film and damn was it depressing and disturbing. the visual effects and the filmmaking was superb and it had an incredible amount of atmosphere. It could’ve done without the amount of animal cruelty though.
It’s a great film from 2024 no doubt
Oooh! As a filmmaker, I love horror movies and I'm always looking for something new, I'll have to check this one out! Thanks for the video! Dropping you a like!!

Love you guys so much. And Kalie’s look in this video is 🔥🔥🔥.
❤️❤️❤️
off topic sorry...but does anyone know if Sinister has reviewed Noroi: The Curse..??
Nope. But I’ve seen it a couple times
I like the movie but I don’t like it as a horror film if that makes any sense. If I was going to recommend it to anyone I wouldn’t even sell it as a horror.
Anja Plaschg made me a fan with her performance though. She really carried the movie and made me stick around to finish it. I would’ve probably shut it off if not for her.
I think we put too much pressure on what we think the word horror in relation to genre means to a film. This is a tragic and deeply disturbing film. What is happening here is horrifying and truly a horror to live through. I get what you are saying though because the film doesn’t intend to scare the audience, just unsettle them, which is more impactful for me personally.
I'm in the minority here how is Utah fan but I don't stick myself to any kind of genre and I like to be entertained but not I like to surprise I had no idea what this one was about I just saw the title and clicked on it I'm not a fan of indie for horror I never heard that phrase till i watched the reviewers tonight and like I said not knowing anything about it I instantly love this movie was intense and if you do a little more research Ashley Google the names that they give you at the end you will see that this lady was interrogated like three times so there's a hole in her own words the whole backstory on her that you could have looked up and also there's a lady who does and it's you the two directors which is very informative they couldn't use that I don't know any of you people at all I just saw the movie like that and then want to see what other people thought and it's interesting to watch you different kind of reviewers reviews for me so far that's why I don't watch reviews on nobody care for them but if I like a movie I like to research the movie after the fact that I don't know anything about something that matters so I get more information about that did the capitol movie was called Stacy whatever the Indian movie then I went and looked at the history and found it more interesting I don't like the viewers nothing against you guys personally you guys pretty cool but the bunch of idiots review the movie before you can tell the guys that were balls and didn't get it but this is a true horror movie if you ever experienced a woman that had really bad postpartum depression a woman who matters something deep into depression a woman who has killed herself because of depression a person who has committed suicide by cop that is true horror for the person living in it and the person and the people experience in it last night saying happy things experience but I'm glad that I went to experience it came out mentally well adjusted and understood what was going on today with me😊 but I left the experience of all the people first hand literally going through it this thing is not horror it is a TOTAL HORROR JUST ASK THE FOLK'S THAT LIVED ARE LIVING A GREAT ACTRESS SHE NEVER ACTED BEFORE AND ALSO DID THE SCORE FOR THIS MOVIE THAT'S HOW SHE ORIGINALLY MET TBE DIRECTORS, THANKS FER THE TIP ON MOMMY SHOW LIKE YOU GUYS
7:14 to 7:30 title was "you won't be Alone"
Yup. Figured it out after haha
Yesterday I was going to ask you about " Goodnight Mommie".You just ans.

In the description
Another unwatchable arty movie like the one from the middle ages with the witch in which Rapace starred... The worst horror movie I have seen in 2024 so far. They always make people look like almost speechless zombies who are able to say just few hollow sentences.
I felt that way with that movie but not this one. This is in my tops of the year
I think I'm one of those people who didn't like this film. I loved the acting and atmosphere but the plot wasn't good. Spoiler here but I knew what was going to happen at the end. It was predictable because they basically told you due to religious beliefs what serious depression would make you do. If you wanted to end your life you'd have to murder someone in order to be forgiven by God because you'd never get into heaven after committing suicide. When she was sent back home, I felt that her mind was more clear and she figured out the best way to end her life and retain a heavenly afterlife. But her depression came from her husband not having sex with her so she could get pregnant and have a baby. Why did she not fight for her future child? She should have insisted that her husband lie with her. That part of the plot I didn't like so it made it hard to like this movie as a whole.
I mean yeah. They tell you how it will end at the beginning. But it is the journey and getting into the head of someone who feels so hopeless and trapped by their situation that I felt was so compelling and devastating.
