Update: I just finished it, and man, it was a wild movie. It was a bit slow, but it set the bleak, helpless feeling our Agnes spiraled into. Also, the imagery is just on point: the dry fish heads staring at her, kissing the dead woman's severed finger, and that messed-up chicken game they played at the wedding. If you can stand a slow burn, I recommend it.
Watched this movie the other night and I loved it. I really really appreciate it and it left me very sad and uncomfortable after I watched it. Very rarely do I rate films 10/10, but this one just did something for me. It felt very unique, I loved the cinematography, and the confession scene with the pastor will stay with me for a while.
As you know, I love experiential films. I appreciated this more than loved it, because I don't think it's possible to love it. They did an excellent job of making you feel the dragging monotony and isolation of being mentally ill in 1750. Very solid 8/10. Oh yeah, my stream was pretty poor quality too.
but she wasn't mentally ill at first, really her husband and mother in law drove her mad by making her think she wasn't a good enough wife and isolating her from the other towns folk by buying that isolated house and withholding the food rations whether necessary or not. women in those days didn't have much, they basically revolved around their husband and children and if their husband didn't want them and wouldn't give them children in their minds what did that make them...they weren't fufilling their godly duties. she was in a catch 22 with a ghey husband and she was only a woman of her time, cheating could have her killed, acting out could have her killed or outcasted from the town which in those times most definitely meant death due to the difficulty of survival, hell, if the right person didn't like her she could even be accused of witch craft and burned alive. Put all that together with a lack of education and DEVOTE faith and she was completely bound in every way possible, not only by others but her own mind.
I just watched it and it’s interesting to see how much grip the beliefs and superstitions had on people in the past. In Mexican small villages people still acted this way into the late 1990s. I liked the movie
Just wanted to point out - The Witch is in color (you may be thinking of Robert Eggers' other movie The Lighthouse), and also I think you have accidentally combined the titles of two other films - Hagazussa: A Heathen's Curse and Huesera: The Bone Woman. Definitely wanna check this one out, I really dug The Lodge!
Acabei de assistir o filme e gostaria muito de ver uma review, adorei a forma que foram apresentados os pontos do filme, não é bem um terror mas eu adorei assistir!
Oh yeah. Fun fact: the lead actress also scored the film! And you mentioned Hagazussa and it definitely reminded me of that, but honestly I liked that one a little better. But seriously, this is a beautiful period piece with some super dark imagery that feels authentically Hellish. I did really like this film, but yeah, what a bummer. Probably won't watch it again anytime soon...
I wouldn’t put this up there with usual folk horror/the secret cult lurking in the wilderness. I’d say it’s up there with witchfinder general/a mass panic makes you wonder what’s lurking beneath the surface.
So I’ve noticed that you and I seem to have the same taste in this genre. As someone who doesn’t watch as much as you (because I don’t have a RUclips channel), would you say that this one is worth your (my) time?
I wasn't as goo goo about this one as I was their other movies. It's really well done but I won't be watching it for many years. It's very heart wrenching and historically interesting though.
There’s slow boils that have a pay off and then there are just tedious viewing experiences in an attempt to be deep. Sadly, this falls in the later category for me.
I'm watching it right I just came to RUclips to see if it's any good, and when you said this movie does not sugar coat the b-tch threw the baby off the cliff, wtf. Wild
Was it just me or was the quality of this film not good.. or maybe it was Shudder.. had to turn it off 10 minutes into it because it looked kind of bad.. I’ll try again soon to see if Its improved.. I did like what I saw though.
I agree it's my least favorite movie by them. It's beautifully shot and has some creepy moments. It dragged for me though a bit. I got Michael Haneke vibes from this one.
Hey guys! What did you think of this one? Have you seen it? Does it interest you? Will you watch it? Sound off!

That's awesome! So glad you found one for you! It's definitely well done..

I think that's fair for sure! And bummer about the stream.. it seemed to correct later. Thanks for writing man!

I was completely mesmerized by this film, from beginning to end.

Blocky part still isn't fixed. Glad it wasn't just me. Thanks for the review!
I saw it two nights ago, it's quite the folk tale but good at the same time. 7/10 this did made me intense.
I'm a huge fan of The Lodge, so I'm definitely checking this one out. I expect a really cozy, uplifting and joyous flick.
Lol
I like this video thanks for doing this dude

Yeah I mean Eggers movie. Inuse it often to compare slow burns.

All good things to those who wait! Hyperrealistic and rough ! Unreal performance by the protagonist actress! 7.5/10
I adore folk horror. I liked The Witch. I love period pieces. Will I like the underbelly of horror? I'll check it out. Thanks for your concise review.
Thanks for watching!
This film was damn devestating. I loved it. Was speechless by the last act of the film.
Dude, just watched this. What a romp! Anyway. More therapy for me, i guess. 😂
Lol

Yeah it definitely is top tier but it isn't one you just pop on . An achievement none the less.

I've been waiting for this baby to drop! Giving it a try and will update.
Please do!
Mild spoiler warning....
a baby definitely drops lol
Lol 😂 😂 😂
I watched this last night and I really enjoyed it! 7.2/10
I'm checking it out tonight
To me, some horror SHOULD be dark and bleak.
Of course. I didn't mean it as a negative.
There’s slow boils that have a pay off and then there are just tedious viewing experiences in an attempt to be deep. Sadly, this falls in the later category for me.
Different movies for different people. It's good to have Different.
Actually liked this one A LOT more than the coffee table IMO
But I can Deffo see it not being for everyone
I'm watching it right I just came to RUclips to see if it's any good, and when you said this movie does not sugar coat the b-tch threw the baby off the cliff, wtf. Wild

It's shudder I mentioned it at the end. I wrote them and they are trying to fix it. It does sort of correct later. 20 to 30 minutes in.
@@btvcastoh that’s good to know it kind of fixes itself after awhile.. I’ll give it another shot

Yeah in can see that for sure.
This movie made me feel like shit, like impressively so but i couldnt recommend it to anyone. It just made me feel absolutely awful
Life is still fucked up 😈; satan gunna rule real soon 🐎. Seek Christ ✝️
