If I owned a self driving car, I'd make it go by itself to the car dealership/mechanic for maintenance, pick up chick-fil-a at the drive through, pick up groceries, pick up people in airport, pickup takeout food, get gas (since we have no self serve), deliver stuff to people, etc. I wouldn't even need to go with it.

I know you’re kind of kidding, but if you treat a self-driving car like that, you would be way better off not owning one at all since can already do all that stuff with Grubhub, Uber, etc. for less money and hassle.

Thank you. This Experience based safety, of how we feel, is what most manufacuteres are focused on. To make your car sound proof, to make you car higher like SUV, to make side visibility worse so you won't experience speed, to make car bigger to give you a sense of safety. But none of the above are giving you Real safety, just a feeling.

I have read those papers Trent mentioned, and I am amazed by the level of details that has been discussed. However, after all, we are comparing Waymo’s response with behavioural models that are simplified models which have major assumptions. What happens in reality can be very different from what the human behavioural models are suggesting. And that’s why Im leaning more towards collecting real world response data and reaching a reliable # of miles to really understand the safety outcome. So far, results are promising but need a lot more miles to really understand and compare
Needless to say Im already sold when it comes to the benefits of ADS from operational and efficiency perspective. Way to go Waymo

The concern I have about self driving cars right now is not safety. My concern is them getting confused.
