  • Snatch grip high pulls have to be my favourite trap/upper back exercise.I like them because they work more muscles than just the upper back, makes you more explosive, look badass and are time tested (see olympic weightlifters traps) In his video I help you avoid some common mistakes in this exercise. So sit back and listen to me talk about this for a few minutes. if you want to get bigger traps like me and alphadestiny do these instead of shrugs.

I’ve only been training for 9 months and as I am now I’m not using straps . As I do feel it in my forearms but that’s not to take away that my traps definitely get pumped and have grown from this. I feel that at my stage straps almost serve no purpose ,,I don’t think I’m going to be flinging 135lbs or over right now..I’m at 105 for 5 x 5. Then I drop it to 95 for a couple burner sets. When I try to move the weight up to 125 or so it’s not my grip stopping me, it’s the weight of the bar and it only reaching my mid section or barely my nipple. I prefer the bar going past my nipple as that’s where I feel the strongest contraction of my traps...So id say if you’re newer there’s no reason to use straps untill you have a baseline strength level .
It’s also a cool feeling when your hands basically become hooks , and when the bar stretches at the bottom u feel nothing in your arms but only the stretch of your back. It’s an odd sensation .

The Strength Classroom indeed ! I now feel confident in my baseline strength. Have moved up to 125...tried using a “versa” grip imitation , works good for every other pull but I think the way the bar slams down puts way too much tension through the grips and they begin to slip after rep 2. Do you use exclusively straps ?

The Strength Classroom almost immediately even with these versa type grips , I feel it way more in my traps . So you were definitely right in this video . I always did feel it in my traps . Maybe it’s the increase in weight , maybe it’s the grips , but I do feel it more . As well as more soreness day after .

Straps allow more force to be put into the muscle. So if the exercise grip does not matter always strap up.

Use chalk if the straps are slipping
