  • Break out the plaster buckets and mix up the silicone, because for this Tiki Technical Tuesday it's mold making time!
    Join in the adventure as we pour plaster, mix silicone, and cast an army of production molds for the Volcanic Vapor mug! Keep in mind, the way I make molds is only ONE of the many ways to do it. Any mold that casts cleanly and has no undercuts is a good mold :)

    Back again, tomorrow is plaster pouring! tunings out model surface finishing only took 1 day lol, I'm working on two different designs at once . I've been watching these videos as soon as I get home from the studio and before I leave in the morning. I think that means I'm protected by plaster "mishaps" by the tiki gods ?? yes?
    also for anyone working on a dwindling budget like myself, the dollar store had a lot of the things I needed for refining, plus mineral spirits from Home Depot, no way around that lol

    These are great. Can you please provide the name of the wood, screw type and size, and general dimensions of the boxes? Attempting to recreate for a similar sized project. Thank you for doing these.

      Thanks! the screw size is dependent on the thickness of the plywood you decide to make your boxes with. Check out this moldmaking video, it has more info:

    why don't you use fiberglass instead of silicone?, it's cheaper and do the same job

    • @vantikistudio
      @vantikistudio  Год назад

      Fiberglass to make the molds? I need a flexible mold material to make the plaster molds. Also: fiberglass resin would need a booth for the fumes, and I’m. It set up for that in my small studio.

    Can you cast a plaster mold out of clay? Or does it have to be fired to bisque or even glazed first? Is plaster of paris good for making molds?

    • @vantikistudio
      @vantikistudio  3 года назад +1

      Aloha! Not sure what you mean for the first question, but I definitely don’t recommend plaster of Paris for molds unless you have no other options. Pottery plaster is much better quality.

    Hi. I really like your work - it's clean and precise. Very nice. Good educational material. The only thing is - in your little character that you hung on the wall - limited edition - I am not sure what you called him - I would have taken it a step further. I mean, it is just a nick nack as it is - why not turn it into functional art by making it into a planter or something? And I love you baby - but this mug is just plain ugly!

    So much to be said for a good mold/moldmaking skills. It's just as important, if not more than the sculpture. Without it, you have nothing! Bravo!
    Question on that silicone, since it sets so fast, is there considerable shrinkage, like if you were to add UFC and extra catalyst in other products? Or have they worked it out somehow for minimal shrinkage?
    Great tips this episode, always learning new things! 👍

    • @vantikistudio
      @vantikistudio  4 года назад

      Good question on the silicone! It takes 24 hours to fully cure - it just kinda gels up after 15 min (or so). I'm guessing it is set up like that because it's really a brush-on silicone. I use it for my poured molds because I like the 40a shore hardness. It's a good stiffness for plaster casting.

    why does he make a plaster mold, then a silicone mold of the plaster mold? Why the extra mold?
    I have always just made one mold. the silicone, or urethane mold. has always worked great.

    • @vantikistudio
      @vantikistudio  4 года назад +1

      For slipcasting, the mold must be made of plaster. I could just use the one plaster mold I made in the beginning of the video - but that means I could only cast one mug a day. The silicone mold lets me cast multiple plaster molds, and that means I can cast multiple mugs in a day.

    This is so neat. I definitely need to have a better setup. I wish I had seen the first part where you made the keys. I just use a pc of broom handle or one of the dowels on my pouring table. But yours are so much better. Could you please tell me where you get your silicone? I must not put right info in my search engine because it doesn't give me this. Thank you so much for the tutorial.

      @@vantikistudio Is there a specific ratio of water/windex? I have used isopropyl alcohol for popping bubbles on resin when pouring into silicone, but have not tested that for plaster. I assume it will be fine as it just evaporates, but wanted to take good notes for the water/windex mix you found. :)

      I use a inexpensive water based ceramic clay for the mold walls.

    • @vantikistudio
      @vantikistudio  Год назад +1

      I know of folks who have molded green ware - but it is challenging. You need to release it VERY well as the plaster will want to bond with the porous surface, and you need to be EXTREMELY careful to avoid any undercuts.
