- Experienced plumbers like me usually have multiple tool bags. Tool bags for soldering, tool bags for repipes, and tool bags for going into a customer's house. Today I'll talk about some of the different tool bags I have, and what tools I carry into them!

What tool bags do you have and what are they used for?
I prefer a tool belt
@@JamieNelsonthedeadcat tool belts can be very dangerous in a home. Having tools hang off and loose can cause massive damage to the clients home, appliances, cabinets, etc. If you are working in the field currently I would urge you to reconsider a tool belt. (unless you are construction/carpentry)
I don't have a tool bag yet😱
I’ve got a copper/water supply bag, bag for materials if in crawlspace or tight area and a general tool bag.
@@Spanishbass if you buy the right tool belt they are not dangerous at all. Situational awareness is also a must. The right tool for the right job, paying for proper tools that function, and paying attention to surroundings go a long way.

Brandon Conley I’m an HVAC tech and have to do a little bit of plumbing now and again. Hot water heaters and boilers or whatever a customer asks for. Depends on the company but you might do some plumbing. Also just a good thing to learn about and know how to do. Good luck.

9in1 screwdriver. 6” channel lock 6” crescent and a bright flashlight. I can fix 90% of your problems above floor with those. The flashlight is my most important diagnostic tool. Hands down.
Our phones as well. Take pictures and take notes when doing a walk through. It shows you're paying attention.

New to plumbing and I've been working on my go bag, the other day I took some time to reorganize it and just that alone made a big difference in how productive I can be, I got to get some of those floor savers though.
First off, would like to say each and every video of yours that I watch is informative, or at the least entertaining.
I've been a plumber in my great state of Idaho since 2005. With a 8 year hiatus during the recession starting 2009, I kept up knowledge of my craft and was able to get my journeyman licence in 2018.
I started watching your channel in March of this year because of pandemic related reasons. Turns out I did not have covid, but had to stay home for two weeks and remote learn. That remote learning involved "The Expert Plumber" series on RUclips. Was immediately impressed with your credentials and thoughts on various plumbing subjects.
I feel I was expertly trained in our craft by my first plumbing company, as my bosses father, who was also his employer, was an instructor for the plumbing training course. Learned not only the code, but how to make your plumbing stand out, and to have my plumbing work (in new residential construction) look good while doing it.
So in the light of making this very long story shorten up, all the tools in your 'Go Bag' I do have in my own as a relatively green service plumber. With the exception of the caulking gun because I do prefer a squeeze tube, I have it all. Buy I don't have the bran new look of course!

I love the channel. I used to be a plumber and definite skill to keep sharp on. My mentor had me set wit these tools and a nice husky bag that I still have ready 4yrs later. I do miss it and one of my best jobs ever def helped mold (lol) me into the man I am today. those raptor tools are nice
Roger! love all the tips, I simillarly have several bags depending on the type job. I'm no longer out in the field (desk work) but still have my bags stored separately just encase someone calls me with an emergency.
!. Service Bag (med-large with few spare parts ontop of hand tools) (most used)
2. MTC bag (small bag mostly hand tools, meter, tape and rags to tidy up during a maintenance call)
3. Plumbing bag (Home Depot Bucket and small bag - anything related to drain lines - you will know all of these including tools getting into P-traps under sinks)(probably my least organized lol)
4. Installation bags (plumbing bag, Gas line bag, Electrical bag, Ductwork/Fiberboad bag, and my torches)
I use digital pressure gauges on most everything I do but always have 2 analog gauges on the truck just incase. (actually had my digital gauges hanging hook snap off while vacuuming down a system and it smashed the digital displayed but luckily could still read the micro sensor and could continue the vacuum).

I always had my helper and I when we walk up to the door we carried tape measure,channel locks,flashlight,and a 4 way screwdriver just for the first look at the problem i have found those tools are great for the first look and once you figure the whole problem out the helper can run to the truck for the bigger items and materials to fix it and it was a great system on small fixes we could be done within that first hour and the customers loved our quick and professional work and we got many great call backs
I have gone into houses that I needed the booties, to protect me from the filth in the house ( dog poop, etc.) In addition to common tools, I also carry needle nose pliers, and a couple of sets of faucet repair kits for moen, delta and pfister. a small roll of shop towels, a small hacksaw, a seat wrench set, some aerator screens, and various small tools parts to fix common issues on the spot without going to my truck or worse yet, the supply house
I'm not a plumber but for hvac I have a medium sized rigid bag for sheet metal work and a smaller bag with tools for servicing equipment. I understand the point of the video but those customers thinking all trades or others that work with their hands are constantly ripping them off is messed up. I could say the same if one needed a lawyer, doctor or other professional.

I'm hooked on your videos they're extremely informational and helpful. I'm getting into the apprentice program for the laborers union in nyc (local 79) I would have started last March but the lockdown happened and the city won't let the local start a new class because we need in-person training for 6 weeks to receive our OSHA scaffolding certificates and demolition training. This last year has been so hard financially ($182 a week on unemployment this is nowhere near a living income for this city and with knowing I'm in the next class I don't want to leave the benefits of a pension annuity vacation checks quarterly health Care plus good pay is worth the wait) this bag would be a big relief on my pocket for my start up tool kit. I would love to know how to get into the contest to receive one. Your doing a great job here on YT showing people what to do if they have an issue with their plumbing in the home weather it's an apartment or a house is a $ saver. keep up the good work. Kris.
My go bag is my veto tp4b , if it's a bigger job i grab my veto tech pac , then i also have a water heater bag that is the smaller version of your Ferguson bag, and a solder bag.
Maintenance director for a property management company. I have my Veto Pro tech pack xl for most things and a 15” packout tote for my dedicated electrical tools. Then a bunch of packout boxes with different stuff for different jobs. Your channel is awesome. Even if I already have experience and don’t need a refresher you’re just an entertaining dude. Thanks!

As a technician I have a huge tool belt. I hate taking that in with me... especially first thing. I have a little tool pouch that clips to my belt. It has everything I need to do diagnostics and start my first steps for an installation. After it fits perfectly into my tool belt when I need it.
What happens when you have to go into the crawl space?

Trim/service bag, solder/water piping bag, rough in tool box, tub/shower kit
I am an appliance and TV repair Tech. I have my primary repair bag. Its a backpack style bag that fits 90% of my tools, a small electrical kit, and my laptop. Larger tools i might need stay in the van until i need them. I also have a home theater/Microwave install bag that has all the tools i need for that and my larger drill/impact. Of course we also use floor savers, gloves, and masks.
Ive got a general purpose bag, drill/ fastening bag, solder bag, towel/tarp bucket, consumables box/ messy AF box a finishing bag. From A-Z in those. Depending on what’s happening that day you grab the appropriate bag
I love how, myself working in the Internet/phone sector of the industry, I still deal with some nasty environments, but I do the same customer face to face practices.
Drop cloths. You know how many times I hear that a plumber didn’t put a drop cloth in a tub or bathroom while working and just that sets me apart. Also makes cleanup easier. Throw it all in the drop cloth and shake it out at our shop in the dumpster.
I'm not a plumber but sometimes I need to do a small plumbing job. I've always taken one of the thick contractor garbage bags and thrown it in the tub first and put everything on top of that.
After throwing out my back lifting my tool bag I spread my tools out in several bags and now I do the same I also keep a small drop cloth rolled up about 6x6 so I can have a place to set my bag and smaller parts on i
I have a Klein backpack as a go bag and other bags set up for specific uses
Same with computer repair. Having your basics with you instead of having to head back and forth saves both sides time and money
Definitely nice. I’m an apprentice plumber. One of my CFTs isn’t just like that, old rusty dirty tools, never cleans them after using them on jobs and is never prepared for the job. Constantly running me back in forth to the truck to get tools or parts that he should already have in his bag. Uniform is a mess, van is a mess but he’s a master plumber. Great working knowledge but no professionalism

👍😎😍🤣 As a professional H D Truck mechanic for almost 50 years, I too appreciate others that are professional in their demeanor and work ethic! I will have to change one thing I do. If a service tech comes in, I will now thank that tech for caring about my house, etc. by wearing floor savers.
“Floor savers” always a must first day of construction class wasn’t how to snap lines or set up for footings it was how to present yourself in front of the client we build a stool that we must keep clean and how to dress speak and what to think about before we stepped into someone’s fully livable home

A go bag is a much better idea than my current trug bucket.. i have bag full of hand tools and general plumbing box but have recently just started taking my preloaded trug.
My go back. Packout 15 in tote. 2 Knipex adjust pliers. Knipex Cresent wrench. 11 in 1 screw driver. 2 rags. 2 pair of rubber gloves. Pressure gauge. Multi meter. Metric and standard Allen wrenches. Measuring tape. Magnet. Cartridge puller. A ring full of aerator sizes. Marker and pencils. Basin wrench. Level. Stop wrench. Tub wrench. Pex cutters. Hardness test kit. Strap wrench. And a little more.
I have multi pocket cathartt work pants I always have a 6 n 1 screw driver, knife and channel locks in my pockets if I know its a fixture I have my Allen keys in my can to stick in my pockets as well , if I'm doing a major repair I pack a bucket out of my bags in the back , except my solder bag is the only tool bag I carry in
Always have a flashlight in each bag, was my rule, too, alongside gloves, etc.
I normally have three things with lights on them in my pocket.

Im not a plummer i do Carpentry. I have my small carry bag that has my hand tools, small work lights, a simple bit set, and my small drill/driver. That way I have a small bag that is good for most simple things. Then I have a box that carries my different saws/cut off tool types. And then I have my large box that has my bigger drill the rest of my bits and a nail gun. Knowing where all your tools are is really good because you know what bag/box to grab for what job your going at the moment😊
I got into the Plumbers Union Apprenticeship in 1987. The only tools you needed was a tape measure, Channel Locks, and workboots. Now there's a basic tool list. The last job I went out to, the Contractor asked, "Where's your PPE?". I'm like, "PPE has always been supplied buy the contractor". This is bullshit! Why have I been paying Union dues all these years?
I have 2 Go-Bags, one aero case style with the small tools (small wrenches, pliers, screwdriver shaped bitholder with a ton of bits, water testing kit, steel brush, electric tools...) and a backpack style for the larger tools (1 1/2" wrench, socket wrench kit, larger spirit level, electric meters for exhaust gas and electricity, small broom and paper dirt bags, some paper wipes and technical sprays or greases). Additionally I have a water hose, my iPad and a notepad with me. Since I do exclusively maintenance in government agency buildings, I do not need any floor protectors. As long as the floors does not look like you are planing to plant crops on it, no one really cares there. Still I do my best not to make any mess there.
As a painter I've got a go "bucket". it's a 5 gal with a HUSKY brand tool caddy insert. Popular among lineman, but when I switched career paths, I kept the same interests.
Back when I was working A/C repair I had a small tool belt with all the basic tools needed for diagnosis and basic repair. If I needed more I had the tool bags in the truck.

I have a few bags but I don't typically carry a bag with me. I'll always assess the situation, then go grab what's necessary for the job.
Tool go bags are cool but man I LOVE my veto back pack I carry the basics along with a couple other odds and ends to diagnose and get started on whatever the customer needs fixed
You hit the nail on the head. Had a plumber come to do an estimate on a few thing show up with a big van of stuff and he didn't even a tape measure or flash light. Also he was so over weight he barely could get down and look under a sink. After saying he couldn't do it no less than 10 tike he through out an estimate about 4x everyone else.
My go to tools are pliers three sizes screwdriver and flashlight. Those are the tools I go into every job with. And I use a bucket and bucket organizer.
I work in hvac, we have a Ferguson in our town. The people are super nice and they give the best prices on parts. Only problem I have is their main focus is plumbing so they often have to order parts and don’t have them on hand. Great parts house otherwise
I only have 2 bags because I’m a commercial plumber. I don’t do service calls. One bag has all my hand tools in it the other bag has all my power tools in it. Usually at the end of the week my cart is full of fittings and small copper pieces and other debris. At the end of the work week I clean everything up and put everything away nicely.
Tool rolls are the best 4-6 removable zippered bags. Compacts down nice in a roll with a handle. Take the whole roll in or it can be stung on the back ov your vehicle seat and just peel off the bag you need for that stop. Atleast for smaller things not hammers. But wrenches screwdrivers nut drivers wire cutters or pipe cleaners ect.
I really like the backpack tool bags for service tools. To me they make it easier to carry an extra bag or 2 bc you have yoir hands free. Love the cookie action by the way! Lol

I like this idea. Don't Break your back with every tool you have. General purpose bag and then specialty bags for specific circumstances. I have just two bags now since that gets me through most jobs
I keep a 16” bag with all the tools I need to perform basic service calls: from swapping toilets, replacing angle stops, drain cleaning, etc. A small tool pouch I can put on my belt with 10” channel locks, 8” adjustable scanner, 11in1 screwdriver, small floodlight, utility knife, and a leatherman to go into a house with to determine if I need to wheel in my service cart. I keep a small tote bag with all of the tools I need for soldering. Dirty bucket, pans, a bucket with clean rags, drop cloths, booties, gloves, and cleaning chemicals, and hand sanitizer. I also keep a large tote with items I use specifically for demo.

I use the same logic with my current job I try to have everything I need to finish a work order but there is always surprises. I hate surprises.
I always have my 7.5 Knipex pliers, Milwaukee blade/screwdriver, a gerber multi tool, and a Milwaukee flood light on my military pants. I walk in to every call with just those and see what the problems are and what other tools I’ll need, then I get them all from the truck.
Hey Roger, I am joining a plumbing co (national brand) as a salesman for sewer and water restoration. I was inspired by your videos and M excited about a new chapter in my career path, as my last one was shot down in flames by the shut down. Do you have any advice for selling plumbing jobs and how to network with RE agents?
I never bring my bag in I use the furgeson tool bag for the back to have easy access and I use a cut in half home depot bucket to minimize me losing tools.
Roger. Can you do a video n how to locate and isolate a water leak under a house that is slab on grade? I am talking city water on the house side of the meter. All faucets OFF wheel in meter keeps turning. How doifind it

The most important thing you can have in your go bag is Ferguson business cards. That tells the customers that you mess up a lot. You mess up enough to get a Ferguson bag for free.
I always call with an eta at least an hour before I get to the job

Hey Roger, the biggest frustration I have is the last two times I had a service tech come out to my house they both had to order parts! Granted they were not plumbers, but it still frustrates the hell out of anyone who makes their living on the premise of repairing?
That would depend on the commonality of the parts your repair required. You can't possibly carry every part for every maker. If it is a commonly used brand then, yes they should have it. If it is older, discontinued, or less commonly used then it wouldn't be uncommon.
My go bag are my carpenter pants. So many pockets....lol

Nothing worse than a cheap customer. Or the customer that buys the parts to avoid paying markup. I carry poly cutters, end wrenches, channel locks, 4 way screwdriver. One large 10 inch long nail, 2 levels, magic marker, pencil,Allen wrench set mini hacksaw,faucet grease, toilet shims, nipple extractors stud finder, crescent wrenches, a voltage tester, lots of junk that I just throw in there like tube caps for caulking scraps of plastic. Man I need to clean my bag and get a new one. (Plumber in idaho) and yes it's about the 💰 I also like getting referral bonus checks for flooded crawlspace or damaged floors. When I see your crawl flooded all I see is dollar signs. I love 🇺🇸
So you mention taking measurements. How are you capturing them, you did not mention a pencil or pens, or a pad, as these things I would say would fit nice in that nice bag.

I'm 15 and all summer I did a side as a plumber it is pretty fun if you know what you're doing I only did stuff you know like replacement and what not and diagnosis but it was still very fun and you are the one that got me interested in plumbing thank ypu

Here where i live never had that feeling from a customer or when some 1 come over to fix stuff for me.
Hard to find people who don't rip you off anymore. AC guys are the worst, had 5 companies look at a problem and none of them got it right, all of them wanted to replace the entire unit when it was just a broken wire that took minutes to fix. Yep I paid to find out they are all clueless scammers for the most part, the few honest ones are told by management to rip off the customer regardless. Money money money.....
dont know what part of country you're in but down her in La. theres still some of us HVAC companies and our guys with morals that want to do things the right way

I'm going to put a post on the subreddit sharing the tools I always carry into the job with me.
My bag is always loaded and ready to go.
I store my bags inside those giant 27-gal plastic totes and cart them on my Flatform hand truck. 1 - metric sockets and wrenches with 1 set of vise grips, 2 - SAE sockets and wrenches, 3 - ratchet bag including my cordless ratchet, 4 - network bag, 5 - HVAC bag, 6 - electrical bag... each bag would have been a toolbox drawer. The bags are $6 from Harbor Freight. I know which bag contains the tool I need. It looks professional and costs less than toolbox systems.
What you do if a customer asks you to remove your shoes instead of the floor savers?
I will actually take them off. It lets them know I care about their house. I have done that before too...
Carry a second pair of work shoes?
My go bag weighs about a 100 lbs. Every time I lighten it up, it just fills back up again
One time I had a plumber come dress in muddy boots, rip dirty blue jeans, he walks up to the house with a cigarette in his mouth then flings it onto the lawn. that's disrespectful in my opinion.
