  • This video is my comprehensive tutorial on all new features which the Hasselblad X2D 100c got with the recently published new Firmware v3.1.0. It turns out that Hasselblad did a great job providing Hasselblad-X shooters with top-notch feature upgrades. But there is also one big disappointment included in my review which I will demonstrate live in detail.
    Content:
    00:00 Introduction: phase detection versus face detection :)
    00:49 Sneak preview: Hasselblad XCD 2.5/90V
    02:09 There was never a firmware v3.0.0, the question is why
    02:59 You need also a firmware upgrade of the XCD V-lenses to v1.4.1
    03:37 Finally we have face detection autofocus in the X2D 100c
    04:31 Live demonstration of the new face detection autofocus
    06:17 Live installation of the new firmware
    07:27 You can now shoot in RAW, JPG and (this is new) HEIF
    08:19 In the meanwhile the firmware upgrade completed - let's check
    08:34 Phocus Mobile 2 finally has Live View for tethered shooting
    09:09 Live demonstration of tethered shooting with Phocus Mobile 2
    09:45 There is one big disappointment embedded in Firmware v3.1.0
    13:00 Improved sensor calibration and the Hidden Menu
    14:41 Improved compatibility with the Profoto A10 flash

    Great review, thanks for sharing the “secret menu” feature. Hope that future firmware update not only get the face detection right on live view, but implements the continuous AF as well.
    I find the X2D AF very accurate and reliable anyway.

      Thank you Ramon, much appreciated feedback. Autofocus tracking is something I am waiting for too. And your comment is spot on: I shot the XCD 2.5/90V over the weekend with face detection and yes, it is slow and also hunting forth and back in low light, but when the focus rectangle over a face turns green, the focus sits correctly at 100% of the shots. Amazing.

    If possible regarding the Sensor Calibration update, does this map hot pixels in the raw file to the degree that Adobe and other RAW editors no longer have them visible? Previously I believe coordinates were only fed to Phocus. Thanks!

    • @mathphotographer
      @mathphotographer  7 месяцев назад +1

      Correct - so far single defect or stuck pixels were automatically removed by Phocus, not by Adobe software. I need to test this once in a while, I currently have no stuck pixels on my sensor. I will try to find out via high ISO and long exposures and "provoke" the sensor a bit :) My hope is that the update changes from Live View only fix to real fix in image output.

    Glad to see the Hassy now has face detect. But is it good enough that you don’t usually find the need for eye detect? As in portrait photography now on the Hassy, do the eyes remain in sharp focus? Because face detect where say the nose is in focus but not the eyes, makes a face detect function pretty useless.

    Thank you for the video. Strangly Hasselblad did not notify me of this firmware update. I wonder why? Anyway I installed the new version and went straight out to take some portraits. (I'm in Penang, Malaysia just now.) Very disappointed. The face detection worked fine but many of my photos were out of focus, not hugely but not something I've ever encountered before. It seems at first sight that the face detection focussed generally on the whole face rather than on specific areas like the (very important) eyes. And with a wide open lens this caused problems. I lost many otherwise good shots, so not generally happy.

    • @mathphotographer
      @mathphotographer  7 месяцев назад

      Thanks Roger and best greetings to Malaysia :) I need to further test the lens. Your comment is spot-on in any case: the face detection algorithm does what its name says, it focuses on the face. But shot widest open, there will be parts of a face that are in focus and parts of a face that our out of focus. What I want to have is full sharpness on at least one eye. And that is typically not working when shooting widest open with face detection but without eye autofocus.

    Do you think there will ever be a firmware update that gives functionality to the microphones and loudspeaker built into the X2D?

    • @mathphotographer
      @mathphotographer  7 месяцев назад +2

      Not sure, actually is unlikely. What I personally believe IMHO is that Hasselblad planned for video but then decided for still images only - which is their home run since in photography they've always been Masters whereas video on the first generations of X-cameras was nothing to write home about. I also believe that with a 100MP sensor plus 4K video, maybe even 8K video, the compact camera body of the X2D would face heat issues - which is hard to fix without proper air ventilation.

      The 80mm is outstanding. If you have that lens, forget about the 90V. Is not worth switching. I would suspect that focus needs an upgrade to include face detection.

      @@fredboyd6062 not only the camera but even the lenses, it is really hard to get one I guess, maybe you should wait a long time or buy a used one, that’s why I say not everyone has one, and even who has it may not necessarily do street or portrait photography.

    I don’t quite understand why it has taken so long for hasselblad/DJI to come out with this feature (and yet still not implement it well with the back button focus button)… it really is basic in todays world. Such a pity

      Matthias (Matthew?), your English is perfect. Having an accent does not diminish that. I was simply trying to clear up a point that you were making. I really enjoy your videos and now I am contemplating switching to an X2D from my X-1Dii. Andrew.@@mathphotographer
