Using SONY AX700, AX43, and AX53 camcorders for multi-camera live video stream w/ATEM mini

  • Many of us cannot attend church right now, se we've all had to learn about doing live streaming to the internet in order to attend religious services virtually while the pandemic continues. I had to help out my own church and I used each Sunday for the five Sundays leading up to Easter to perfect my own stream in order that families could still hear a message of hope during the Covid19 crisis. Each Sunday I tried to up my game, adding cameras, the ATEM Mini switcher from Blackmagic, and improving my audio feed. I worked completely by myself on this and my learning curve was steep. This video offers an overview of the equipment I used to capture Easter in 2020.
I break down this video into the three cameras, how they all connect to the ATEM Mini, explain my audio, and how I feed one line of mono audio into the Sony XLRK2M to make things more simple and to be able to ride gains on the fly. I was a one man band. Hopefully this will help you understand how to move from a boring single camera stream into something more dynamic and with added production value, but on a budget... Please post your questions/comments below :)

This video/tutorial is awesome! Extremely well thought out clear down to the gear list at the end. A person could feasibly go out only armed with the info in this video and the recommended shopping list, buy the gear and hit the ground running with little to no experience recording small church services and speaking engagements on a budget with impressive results. Thanks for doing this video. Very appreciated.

Excellent presentation of the cameras and equipment setup and operation. Above all, recording the services with only yourself to manage the audio, video, and telecasting, , is an outstanding achievement.

I came across this video by accident and this was truly a blessing. Our church is performing multi-camera live streaming and I had some curiosity about how our one-man-show counterpart accomplishes the task. This gave me some increased knowledge and, once the challenges imposed by the pandemic might abate, I hope to meet with our video resource to learn more. I am also in the process of obtaining a new video camera (Sony FDR-AX53) as I recognized the limitations of shooting video with either my phone or my Nikon D7000 DSLR. Thanks for the excellent overview.

Thanks Patrick! In my live streams I use OBS, and I dont see the need to invest in something like the ATEM switcher. What is the advantage of having an ATEM mini? Sometimes my ceremonies are simple, sometimes quite complex, with several resources, preachers, etc. and the OBS has worked well for me, but I am afraid that I am loosing something.

    • @PMRTV
      @PMRTV  4 года назад

you are probably correct on that. I love the simplicity of the ATEM, that it automatically can use four cameras each set to a different frame rate, and that it's not so computer dependent... as long as you have a powerful machine to switch AND stream with, OBS will work well for you

when I made this video back in 2020, they didn't make the Pro version yet. If you buy the ATEM Mini Pro, you can literally connect up an external drive to the switcher and record an entire show. Easy peasey! I have an affiliate relationship with Bedfords Photo out of AR and OK and can get you 5% off the normal price. Just use my code, "PMR" at checkout and they will credit you back the 5% once they ship. This code works for everything they sell too ;)

We started using the R73 and R74 together with a MacBook and ECamm software. Fully plug and play no need for camcorders. I had those cameras but any other cheaper cameras from the last few years would work!! No need for capture cards. We do capture the audio using an inexpensive audio adapter card and microphone directly to the laptop. Using the laptop and ecamm software you get a smooth switch box large viewer and audio combination. We use multiple cameras including an iPhone for different angles and views. Little zooming during the live stream. The iPhone requires a cheap software installed on it - Film Mic pro is what we use.

Those candles literally represent our people as they come into "full communion."

Just a quick question, I noticed that one of your camera is stuttering ( 24:26 to 24:40 ) is it a different frame rate issue on each cameras or the shutter speed of the camera? I had to ask since I only use capture cards for each camera instead of atem mini. And I have watched reviews that atem mini is great in handling different frame rates from each inputs.

One question if I may Patrick. Everything you described makes perfect sense to me, except for the audio mixer portion. I have never used such a device and I'm wondering how you isolate each audio feed during recording? It seems like all the mics are always hot, so how does the ambient noise not get picked up by the other mics for example... Are you turning mics on an off as the show goes on similar to the video feeds? Or are you turning the mics not in use down on the fly perhaps with the gain knobs? Or does the mixer just take care of all that? Thank you again Sir! You are quite the professional and I have learned a lot from you over the years ;)

Jay, what you describes is exactly right. I just watched the gain knobs and raised and lowered them as needed depending on what what going on in the Mass.

@@PMRTV Thank you very much! So I guess you test and set each mic gain accordingly before the service starts and then if and when needed dial them in. Interesting, because I would think the re-verb or whatever it's called would be an issue from mic to mic if they were all "hot" at once.. Like I said I have never done anything like this before and it's a serious endeavor by yourself to say the least. Really well done Sir and thanks again ;) Jay

Thanks for your excellent video. I especially appreciate your list of equipment at the end. It was MOST HELPFUL. I am now looking at getting a Libec Zoom Control for my AX700. Question, I see a new version of the libec remote that also has FOCUS controls. Would that one work with my AX700 or should I stick with the Zoom / Record model only ? THANK YOU !!!

Hi! Thanks for all your help. Does the AX43 has a clean HDMI?

I think you mean AX33. That’s what I have and yes, it does have a clean HDMI out. However, it uses the mini HDMI chord, not the full sized one.

Excellent video. I recently purchased a similar setup except i have canon camcorders and a roland switcher but i was unclear on the live stream or if i had to pre-record. One question how do you do your lower thirds? Do you do them live or add the the recorded version.

    • @PMRTV

You can add up to 20 different PNG files into the ATEM unit I have and then push them out to your video stream at the press of a button--but you have to put them in order... Pretty sweet!

Thank you for your contribution. My problem is that it indicates the LIVE AIR only with Blackmagic cameras. Do you know if there is a way around that the camera man on the Sony cam could also know when his camera is broadcasting through ATEM. I use ATEM Mini Pro ISO. Thank you for your answer.

Thank you for a very informative video! It sure answered a few questions for me since I am in a, technically similar situation with my wife’s ballet studio. I do have a question though and would appreciate your assistance. My setup is the “same”, but it is a USB version with 1080p Logitech webcams, sound mixer for voice and music, all through Zoom interactive “meeting” application. All works well except that I am not happy with the image (resolution) that arrives on the participants’ laptops.
The question I have is to determine the cause of the poor image.
    a) Is it the USB vs HDMI setup, or
    b) the nature of an interactive system (2-way communication) vs streaming (1-way), or
    c) the bad internet quality ruining it for all? Which of course raises the question that quality won’t improve, regardless of USB or HDMI system?
Do you have any advice on the matter?

    • @PMRTV
      @PMRTV  3 года назад

Zoom limits you to 720P as a max resolution unless you pay for PRO AND write to them and ask for 1080P resolution. You have to make a case as to why you want/need the higher rez.

Hi Patrick! Very informational video. I have an ATEM mini pro and a Sony FDR A43 as one of my cameras. During live stream, I can't seem to get a clean hdmi output. Do you have any advice for that. Maybe I'm missing a setting or something, but I can't seem to get the video feed to be completely free of the zoom controls on the left and also the standby indicator at the top of the screen. If you have any advice I would love it. Thanks and again enjoyed the video very much.

Thank you for this. I have 2 AX53 cameras, but I can't get them to work with the ATEM Mini Pro. WHen I connect, the camera gives me a "no picture"message. I believe this is because of the video setting on the AX53 but I can't be sure. What video type/resolution settings are you using with the Handycam AX53?

too bright, in fact. My son shot that video and while we started with the correct exposure, the sun came out of the clouds and lit it all up and since I shoot in manual exposure, he didn't catch the change. I think it was shot with an a7RIV with the FE28-135PZ lens....

It is not easy to work in temples, much less do a multi-camera broadcast and also live. In my country the temples have very little lighting and the audio is terrible. I know what it's like to work in photography or video inside a temple. I congratulate you for achieving it so well and without many resources.

Ive been slowly building a couple different kits for different projects.
One of which is a video Kit. Ive wanted a camcorder for years. And drool over cinema cameras
But been using my R5 & R6 which does exceptional video.
But I want the no video limits, no overheating video focused & having an all in one set up thats great for events. I also wanted to get a livestream kit set up as well. So I am looking at the BM Atem Mini Pro & Rode Caster Pro II to link up video & high end audio streaming through a laptop
