So many people also confuse the demographic depending on who the protagonist is. Gender and stereotypes alone seem to be a factor in how people perceive a series. Akane Banashi and Rakugo Shinju are both manga/anime featuring rakugo, but one is a shonen series starring a female character while the other is a josei starring an elderly man. Although mandakas should know who their audience is when making their story, demographics should not limit the type of story they want to tell.
More people need to see this video. Just last week I had an argument about "wokeness" in Anime. I told him that certain themes are a staple in shoujo manga and manga/anime didn't become "woke" because of western influence. It was always there and he should just broaden his horizons and watch more than just Battle Shounen. He then said he watched some "100 Girlfriend, and Kaguya" as to show me that he does inedeed watch shoujo. I was so baffled I checked out of the convo after telling him those were both not shoujo. Shoujo = Romance, is the worst kind of Weeb Math out there.
Omg thanks for addressing this 😭 This is actually what happened with Banana Fish, where ppl were calling it a "yaoi" bc it has two male leads and was published in a shoujo magazine, completely ignoring the entire premise and themes of the show This so goes for animation terminology and production in general. For some reason, it seems like a sizable amount of anime fans don't know what CGI actually is and how common it is lol
There is also the thing with hand drawn, like they think digital artists just use the force to move their drawing tablets or that people don’t just draw the frame before just digitizing it.
It’s so funny that people apply this to things outside Manga and their anime adaptation. Like I’ve seen people call Japanese Novels, light novels, and games by these demographics. Despite the fact that there’s been adaptations of Legend of the Galactic Heroes in Shojo, Shonen, and Seinen magazines I’ve seen it called a Seinen, same with Steins;Gate which is just a visual novel and people think SAO is a shonen. I think people forget the other factors that determine the demographic like reading level which matters for younger audiences in Japan who know less kanji, magazine ads because I don’t think Rolex wants to waste money spending money on ads in Jump, and magazine content because a lot of Seinen magazines have bikini model pinups. The problem is that we just get these swries on bookstores or websites without any of the context of it’s original publication.
actually, the reason I watched this video was because I saw the seinen tag on Skip and Loafer and people in the comment section seemed confused by it, as was I when I looked up what that meant since its a demographic not as commonly talked about compared to shoujo or shonen. Thank you for this video!
the last bit about being a fan of a less promoted demographic I can relate to as a yuri fan. We're actually getting some good anime recently, but a yuri getting a season 2 is still an incredibly sparse occurrence. Although I read far far far more yuri manga, mainly bc stories the stories are more complete, more varied, far more in quantity, and don't have to abide by TV broadcast standards.
We''ve been so used to saying it for years that everyone just assumes that they are genres. Everyone thinks shonen is a goofy adventure anime with flashy fights and that seinen is darker and has a more complex plot .This is funny to me cause anime like Oshi no Ko, Tokyo Ghoul and Kaguya Sama are Seinen while Attack on Titan, Chainsaw Man are considered Shonen.
I generally get why demographics get used incorrectly, it's common that a demographic might follows certain troupes as they are successful with the demographic/market group. But overall when people talk about anime, I'm very weary with using demographic besides using the term "battle shonen" which I feel has pretty clear definitions on what falls into that category. The thing is demographics simply don't translate exactly between art mediums. Magazines and TV programs are completely different. Overall I would say TV has a more splits in demographics compared to a magazine due to the fact a magazine can be picked up and read at any time while an airing show has to be played at a specific time where hopefully your target is likely to be awake and not busy. Anime simply isn't demographically re-categorized for TV so I feel the demographic terms used for manga don't translate very well. Also lowkey the biggest reason this is a problem is damn teenage boys thinking they're hot shit for reading or watching fucking dark/mature shit like Berserk. We need the dunk on them, this is the solution, we must change the community consensus, we must shift the agenda, we must make K-On it the true hard ass anime. We must say that only the true mature man watches K-On, the most hard seinen adaption put to anime.
I see your point. It also doesn’t help that there are a bunch of articles and content out there blatantly getting the demographics of shows wrong. And I’m all for making K-On the face of Seinen 😂
Great video! My fav josei is Life Lessons with Uramichi Oniisan, fav seinen is Dorohedoro, my fav shonen is Black Butler, and fav shoujo is Banana Fish
Another Thing that Can't Understand Why 3x3 Eyes Despite Being a Seinen Henche it's Serialized in Young Jump Get The Kodansha Award in the Shonen Category? This Manga is too Gory for being aimed at a Eight Year Old, it's Should to Win in the General Category
1- If magazines define demographics, what about anime originals? Cowboy Bebop, Code Geass and Evangelion are all anime originals and have "no demographic". 2- What about manga that changed magazines mid run? 3- Hilariously, if you were to take the manga spin offs of the three anime I stated, they'd all classify as 'shoujo', because the were all released in Monthly Asuka, a shoujo mag, but seriously, who would ever consider Bebop and Eva shoujo? Makes even less sense when you take Evas 70% male fanbase (acording to an old source) into account. Isn't it also weird to classify a show based on a spin off series?
1. Yes anime originals technically have no demographic 2. Then the demographic changes simple as that. 3. Lmao that is funny. And while the anime originals will have no demographic, those spin off mangas do. You would have to categorize them differently when talking about demographics though.
“Woooo! Yeah baby, that’s what I’ve been waiting for, that’s what it’s all about.” Finally someone say that demographics aren’t genres. Literally had an argument with people that battle series is a legit term and they say “it causes more confusion” despite the fact that continuing to use the term Shonen for battle anime is even more confusing. People need to start using terms like battle series or Nekkestu for that genre. Also whenever someone asks what the best Seinen is on their community tab, I always answer K-On because if we are talking anime, it’s probably the best one with that amazing adaptation.
@@ontheriseav no ill intent, but I tend to mistake the demographic on purpose just to annoy snobby weebs. for real though, my favorite action manga is Chainsaw Man. Been trying to expand my shoujo catalogue lately because I mostly end up going for searching for manga through genres, and unfortunately they tend to leave out josei/shoujo from the equation a lot. If I didn't go through those labels myself, I wouldn't have found gems like Basara, Burn the House Down and Prince Freya.

Exactly! I simply want fans to learn at least the basics of how shows are made 😂

I agree! Those website articles are the worst offenders if you ask me.

Battle Josei is indeed the best.
Actually starting reading one the other day it’s fire 👌🏽

I can’t blame them cause word of mouth is strong but it is annoying at time lol.

There are Another Genre Which The Western Weebs tend To Avoid like the Plague Called Anthropomorphic or Animal Casts/Xenofiction

My favorite shoujo manga is Chainsaw Man.
The pain I felt reading this lol

This does not matter, all anime is mecha 😂
Oh of course lol
I second that
Bleach is a seinen. 😤
